May 2003 was a very exciting time for the St. Catherine Center at 1900 Providence Drive and the Regis/St. Elizabeth on 4th street in downtown Waco. Glen Rose moved to Providence Park from Sterling House on March 28th.

She was born in Elgin, Texas in Bastrop County. Her father (an Irishman) thought her name should sound Irish, thus Glen Rose Callahan came about. He passed away when Glen Rose was 10 years old. He was a high degree Mason so she was sent to the Masonic Home and School in Ft. Worth where she graduated from High School. She married Sam Shurtleff Jr. in 1947 while attending Baylor University where they were both freshman. When

Sam graduated they moved to Aggie country in Bryan for a while and then on to Houston in 1955 where their son was born; Sam Shurtleff III. Glen Rose has 2 grandsons; James Glen who is 31 years old and Robert Allan who is 26 years old. James will be getting married in Lampassas on October 12, 2013. Glen Rose is looking forward to this big event.

Glen Rose worked all her life as a secretary in such places as M. D. Anderson in Houston, Connally AFB in Waco and the V. A. Regional Office in Waco. She retired

from the V.A. in 1986.

Mr. and Mrs. Shurtleff traveled to Canada twice, Ireland and Europe once. She would like to back to Ireland in order to identify her heritage.

Glen Rose has met a lot of new friends at Providence Park and enjoys being here.

The annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon was held April 24th in the Community Room of Providence Park. Jana Whitaker, Vice Presidents of Marketing and Volunteer Services, and Patty Hawk, Director of Volunteer Services, gave wonderful speeches injected with a little wit and humor for the volunteers to enjoy while dining services served a great meal with a dessert that was out of this world.

There were two recipients of Volunteer of the Year awards:

Beverly Keahey – Chapel Services Volunteer Jim Kemp – Providence Park Volunteer

We would like to thank Beverly, Jim and all the volunteers here at Providence Park for doing a great job. We couldn’t do without you!

Mrs. Mitchell was born in the Kosse/Marlin area and lived there her entire life. She married Ray Mitchell from Marlin in 1953 and they had two sons: Mike who is a rancher in Robinson and Mark who lives and works in Keller, Texas for Harper Cattle Co. When her first son was born in 1955 she retired from being a lab technician and became a permanent domestic engineer.

She enjoys playing bridge guys, so you bridge players have a new player here, ask her to join in sometime. Jean also likes working in her church at 1st Methodist of Marlin. She said this might sound strange, but she always enjoyed doing housework as well especially ironing. “You can forget all your problems, if you just pick up an iron.” Jean sounds like a really fun person, so get to know her and ask her to join in.

Welcome Jean Mitchell Apt. 2310

I will never forget. Back then, I looked forward to living the future with our residents, and now I am looking forward again to the years ahead in serving and helping our folks here at Providence Park enjoy their stay.

Rheadene Weber Director of Resident Relations

Cinco De Mayo falls on a Sunday this year so we will be celebrating on Friday the 3rd with a “special” Happy Hour in the Village Dining Room beginning at 2:30 p.m. We will be serving Margarita’s, with chips, queso and guacamole. We even have some “SPECIAL”

entertainers coming to perform for you. They are the: 3, 4, or 5 Amigos, depending on who chickens out before the party starts. I think everyone who attends will definitely get a good laugh or two so don’t miss it………….you’ll have a lot of fun.

Residents and Staff Remember the Move from the Regis

As our administration is making plans for the celebration of ten years at Providence Park, I thought of my own experience three years ago. When I arrived here, I only knew residents Stan and Pat Howard and Don Oliver. It was somewhat like moving into a new community, not knowing anyone or where to turn. It didn’t take me long, however, to make acquaintances and get involved in one activity or another.

Conversations from time to time invariably involved questions about residents’ history and how long they had been at the Village. I initially thought my friend Doyle Leonard had been here the longest, nine years. But as time went by, I learned that several residents and staff members had not only been here ten years but had also “spent time” at the Regis downtown.

Gaining that information set me to wondering how many residents and staff members who made the move from Fourth and Austin were continuing as a part of this enterprise. With a little help from several sources, I identified a number of such persons and proceeded to talk to them about their move here. While I didn’t write down what they told me, I think all of you newcomers like me would enjoy engaging them in conversation to learn their stories.

Our administrator, Michael Olmstead, who began his association with Providence as an intern at the Regis, served in several capacities in planning and carrying out the moves.

Resident Director Rheadene Weber, who had been on the staff of the old St. Catherine, had a pivotal role in getting residents settled in the new facilities.

Resident Bill Porter transferred to St. Elizabeth Place from 1900 Providence.

“A Matter of Balance”For 8 weeks beginning Wednesday May 8th, the Area Agency on Aging will be presenting its’ “A Matter of Balance” class for 12 brave residents here at Providence Park. The class will begin at 1:30 p.m. Remember, you can only miss one class in order to get your certificate of completion for the class. This is a very good class that helps residents become more

aware about the issues of falling. The last time they were here they had a full class and this time they are as well. Their limit is 12.

Those who have signed up are as follows: Mary Vann, C. J. Wilson, Charlene Krupicka, Rosa Gillespie, John Sheppard, Leon Dobbs, Elizabeth Nail, Charles Tolbert, Aline Slack, Peg Hair, Billy Bowman, and Betty Hicks.

We will be celebrating our 10th anniversary here at Providence Park with a party on the Portico. Your families are invited to attend. It will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 17th. The band “The Morticians” will be here. Michael Olmstead, our administrator, is planning a little special program for the evening with present and former staff members and residents. Dona and her staff will be providing a dessert for everyone to enjoy and the activity department will be providing plenty of wine, soda and water. Your families should have received an invitation in the mail. Because of limited seating, there will be no reserved seating and everyone may have to share a table with others for this event. So come have a good time.

Anniversary Party

Homemade Ice Cream PartyIt’s that time again for Sharon and David’s famous homemade ice cream. They will be “cooking up” this special treat on Tuesday May 28th. So if you hear a lot of noise coming from the Village Activity Room that morning, it’s just them making about 8 gallons of ice cream. The party will start at 2:00 p.m. in the Village dining room with

flavors like: Butter Pecan, Cherry Vanilla, Peach and Banana Nut. You can get Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry any day of the week so we won’t be having those this time. But come on down and try one, two, or three helpings of this outrageously good “stuff ”. We’ll guaaaarantee you’ll like it……
