Registration Information

You may register online at goo.gl/d2mHaX or you may register by calling 646-794-2692. The reg-istration fee for admission is $25 per person. The registration fee includes admission to the morning address, opening liturgy, keynote address, midday prayer, forum panel discussion, two workshops of your choice, closing prayer and a box lunch. Your registration fee payment must be made online or postmarked by Friday, June 8 to receive your admission/lunch ticket. If you make your registration fee payment after June 8 or at the door on the day of the event, you will need to bring your own lunch. There are no refunds.

Please review the workshop details before you register so that you can fill in your workshop choices. Those who register and pay by June 8 will receive their admission/lunch ticket by e-mail. You must PRINT your admission/lunch ticket, so you may present it at the entrance door. All registrants will need to pick up their Bible Summit materials (Summit ID tag, their schedule for the day and hospi-tality bag) at the welcome table, located in Cathedral High School, 350 East 56th Street, between 1st and 2nd Avenues, as early as 8:00am.

Thomas Cardinal Collins

Thomas Christopher Cardinal Collins was born and raised in Guelph, On-tario. In 1969 he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (English) from St. Jerome Col-lege in Waterloo. In 1973 he obtained a Master of Arts degree. (English) from the University of Western Ontario and a Bachelor of Theology from St. Peter's Seminary in London, Ontario. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 5, 1973. He received his Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Bible

Institute in 1978 and Doctorate in Theology from the Gregorian University in 1986. In 1997 he was appointed as Bishop of Saint Paul, Alberta. Two years later, he was named the Archbishop of Edmon-ton. In 2001, while in Edmonton, he was named Apostolic Administrator of Saint Paul. In December 2006, he was appointed as the Archbishop of Toronto.

During his time thus far in Toronto, Cardinal Collins has served the global church through his membership with the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, Congregation for Catholic Ed-ucation and Commission of Cardinals for oversight of the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR). He has participated in the Synod on the Eucharist, and the Synod on the Middle East, served as an Apostolic Visitor in Ireland and also as the Delegate of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith for Anglicanorum Coetibus.

On January 6, 2012, the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI announced the appointment of Cardinal Collins to the College of Cardinals. He was elevated to the College of Cardinals as Cardinal Priest of San Patrizio on February 18, 2012. Thomas Cardinal Collins is the 16th cardinal in Canadian history.

Cardenal Juan José Omella nació en Cretas, un pueblo ubicado en la Ar-quidiócesis de Zaragoza en España. Estudió en el seminario de dicha ar-quidiócesis y se formó con los Padres Blancos en Lovaina y Jerusalén. Como sacerdote fue Coadjutor, Párroco, Arcipreste y Vicario Episcopal de la Diócesis de Zaragoza. También fue misionero en Zaire. En 1996 fue nombrado Obispo Auxiliar de Zaragoza. En 1999 fue nombrado Obispo de la Diócesis de Bar-

bastro-Monzón. Fue administrador apostólico de Huesca y de Jaca. En el 2004 fue nombrado Obispo de la Diócesis de Calahorra y La Calzada-Logroño. Ha sido responsable de la obra Nacional de Manos Unidas y es miembro de la Congregación para los Obispos. En el 2015 se hizo público su nombra-miento como Arzobispo de Barcelona. Fue creado Cardenal por el Papa Francisco el 28 de junio de 2017. Recientemente ha sido nombrado miembro del Tribunal Supremo de la Signatura Apostólica.

The Joy of Being a Disciple

The workshop proposes an approach to discipleship in the Gospel of John. Particular attention will be given to the joy of being a disciple, as participation in the joy of the Master. This joy, like the peace that Jesus gives,

is not "of this world", but it means to take into account adversity and overcoming it with surrender.

From contrition to the Joy of

the Lord: a biblical path.

This workshop will present the biblical notion of contrition as one of the crucial points in the process to

achieve the Joy of the Lord. This path implies a spiritual preparation that would be developed in the following steps: a) to recognize, b) to confess, c) to return or reconciliation, d) to have a new heart, and (e) the divine action. These steps lead to the notion of chará as the essential element of the Christian and Ecclesiastical life according to Evangelii Gaudium nn. 2-8 which faces great challenges as well.

Dei Verbum: A shift from “simply

truths” about God to God’s

“personal self-disclosure.”

Dei Verbum, Vatican II’s Constitution on Divine Reve-lation, was a major turning point in our understanding of Scripture. The basic emphasis is now placed on the ‘personal self-communication’ of God to humanity in Christ. This emphasis on the intimate nature of rev-elation shines throughout Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation, The Joy of the Gospel, in which the Pope invites us to a renewed encounter with Jesus Christ so that we might receive the love which restores meaning to our lives. This workshop will examine the relationship between Dei Verbum’s understanding of the Word of God and Pope Francis’ call for a new chapter on evangelization marked by the joy of life in Jesus Christ. We will see that both documents share a profound appreciation for the concept of “encounter with the Sacred.” Sr. Maureen Sullivan’s workshop is being sponsored by William H. Sadlier, Inc.

The Bible offers insights into the various ways of ex-periencing joy. More than a personal positive feeling,

joy is a transformative orientation that guides how a person lives one’s life. In this workshop, the scriptural basis for the experiences of joy will be considered in seeing joy as: 1) a gift from God; 2) lived as a disciple of Jesus; 3) a fruit of the Holy Spirit in witness of life; 4) joyful worship as expressed in the psalms.

How the Bible Became a Book

Bibles are ubiquitous. Almost every book store offers a large choice of Bibles and Bible translations. Physi-cally the Bible we buy in the store is no different from any other book. It has pages, chapters, page numbers

and covers. What could be more natural? The problem is that we begin to think of the Bible as just another book, sacred, of course, but really just another book. We tend to think the Bible as we have it now is pretty much the same as it always was. Actually, that is not the case. This work-shop will discuss that in order to understand and appreciate the biblical text, it is important to understand how it came about, what forces and traditions formed it and why the Bible is radically different from almost any other book we read.

Father Daniel Kerber is a priest of the Archdiocese of Montevideo. He is currently a Pastoral Vicar and is a Doctor in Theology. For twenty years, he has been a New Testament professor. He has several academic publications. Fr. Kerber was named by the Pope "Auditor" for the Synod of Bishops of 2008, on "The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church." He is a consultant to CEBITEPAL and participates in the "Lectionautas" project. For seven years, he was a Consultant for Translations of United Bible Societies.

The Father Dempsey Acosta is a catholic priest born in Maracaibo, Venezuela. He holds a degree in education with a specialization in Philosophy by the Universidad Católica Cecilio Acosta in Venezuela. He is a graduate of the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, obtaining his doctorate in Biblical Theology. He holds a degree in Biblical Sciences by the Pontifical Biblical Institute of Rome. 2008 serves as an expert and consultant to the Roman Catholic Ministries of the American Bible Society. He is currently teaching full time at the University of St Thomas, Houston, Texas.

Maureen Sullivan, OP, is a Dominican Sister of Hope from New York. She received her M.A. in Theology from Manhattan College in the Bronx and her Ph.D. from Fordham University in the Bronx. She is Professor Emeritus of Theology at St. Anselm College in New Hampshire. Prior to her ministry at St. Anselm College, she served two years as Academic Dean for freshmen at Fordham College, followed by two years as the Associate Dean of the College. Sr. Maureen is a national religion consultant for the William H. Sadlier Publishing Company, a position that enables her to speak to Catholic schoolteachers, catechists, and diocesan leaders on contemporary theological issues. She has written two books on the Second Vatican Council, both published by Paulist Press: 101 Questions and Answers on Vatican II (2002) and The Road to Vatican II: Key Changes in Theology (2007).

Rev. Michael P. Kerrigan St. John-Visitation Church, Bronx, New York

Rev. Michael P. Kerrigan presently serves as Pastor of St. John-Visitation Parish, Bronx, NY. He is an instructor in the New York Catholic Bible School Program and Catechist Formation Program and has been a presenter at the Archdiocesan Catechetical Forums. While editor at Paulist Press from 2005-10, he worked on various Bible and pastoral Scripture resources including the Lectio Divina Catholic Prayer Bible. Father Kerrigan did his undergraduate studies majoring in philosophy and sociology at St. John's University, Jamaica, NY; graduate studies with degrees in theology at The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. and in religion and religious education at Fordham University, Bronx, NY and postgraduate studies at the Institute for Continuing Theological Education, Pontifical North American College, Rome.

Rev. Elias Mallon, SA, PhD, KHS Catholic Near East Welfare Association, New York

A native New Yorker, Father Mallon is an ordained member of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement (Graymoor). He obtained a licentiate degree (STL) in Old Testament studies and a PhD in Middle Eastern languages from the Catholic University of America. He researched and wrote his dissertation at Eberhard Karls Universität in Tübingen, Germany. He taught at the Washington Theological Union and American University in the Washington, DC. He taught ancient Near Eastern languages the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. He also worked for the then Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity (now Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity) as its faculty representative at the Institut Œcuménique of the World Council of Churches in Bossey, Switzerland. At present Elias is the External Affairs Officer for the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) which supports charitable, educational, health and development projects in the Middle East, Ethiopia, Eastern Europe and southern India. Here he is responsible for representing CNEWA at the UN, research and interreligious dialogue. He is a regular contributor to America Magazine and One to One, the blog site of CNEWA. Father Mallon was inducted last year into the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

Sr. Carol Perry, SU Society of St. Ursula, New York

Sr. Carol Perry is a graduate of Fordham University, has an MA from St. Mary's College at Notre Dame, Indiana, and is a graduate of Regina Mundi Pontifical Institute in Rome. Sr. Carol recently retired as Resident Bible Scholar at the Marble Collegiate Church and is currently engaged in giving retreats and scripture conferences across the country. Her entire career in secondary and adult education has been spent in making the Bible and its message user-friendly by bringing its people and stories to life. She is the author of Waiting for Our Souls to Catch Up and Among Women (Asahina & Wallace, Pub).

David Trobisch, PhD Museum of the Bible, Washington, D.C.

Born in Cameroon as the son of Lutheran missionaries, David Trobisch grew up in West Africa. He went to school in Austria and studied theology in Germany. He taught New Testament at the University of Heidelberg, Missouri State University, Yale Divinity School, and Bangor Theological Seminary. As a scholar, David Trobisch is recognized for his work on the Letters of Paul, the Formation of the Christian Bible, Performance Theory in Antiquity, and Bible Manuscripts. He is on the editorial board of the Greek New Testament (Nestle-Aland edition) and serves as an advising scholar for the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC, and Europe.

ValLimar Jansen Fontana, California

ValLimar Jansen is a highly regarded singer, composer, storyteller, psalmist, author and recording artist. ValLimar has presented at some of the largest gatherings of Christians in recent years. She has a long history of singing sacred music. She received most of her training in music and performance at Howard University in Washington, DC, and she holds professional degrees in the Arts from California State University, San Bernadino and the University of California. ValLimar has sung and toured professionally throughout the United States, Switzerland, France, Germany, Belgium and Japan. She has been the cantor for numerous liturgies at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress, as well as many other national and international conferences. Oregon Catholic Press is co-sponsoring ValLimar’s participation in this event.

El Padre Guillermo Acero Alvarin es un sacerdote colombiano de la Congregación de los Padres Eudistas. Estudio Teólogo en la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Bogotá (Colombia). Licenciado en Sagrada Escritura del Pontificio Instituto Bíblico de Roma, con estudios de arqueología en la Escuela Bíblica Francesa de Jerusalén. Director de la Escuela Bíblica del Centro de Formación del Consejo Episcopal Latinoamericano (CEBITEPAL - CELAM) hasta junio 2017. Actualmente es Vicario General de la Congregación de los Padres Eudistas en Roma y miembro del equipo de investigación del Instituto Bíblico de UNIMINUTO, Bogotá.

La Hermana Melba Rosa Vásquez es un miembro de la Congregación de Notre Dame de Montreal desde 1992. Nació en Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Estudió: Profesora de Ciencias Naturales en la UPN, FM, Honduras, Licenciada y Master en Teología en la Universidad “José Simeón Cañas”, El Salvador. Ha sido profesora de Teología en la Universidad Católica de Honduras. Experiencia Pastoral parroquial: Escuelas de Teología, Formación de líderes (Delegados de la Palabra de Dios, catequistas, P. juvenil), Pastoral Mujer-género, Cáritas Honduras. Misiones en Guatemala, El Salvador y Honduras.

El Padre Wilton Sánchez es de la Diócesis de Chiquinquirá (Colombia) desde 1997. Es Doctor en Teología con especialización Bíblica de la Universidad Gregoriana de Roma, Magíster en Ciencias Bíblicas del Pontificio Instituto Bíblico de Roma, Magister en Teología de la pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Bogotá y Licenciado en Ciencias Religiosas y Ética de la Fundación Universitaria Juan de Castellanos de Tunja en Colombia. Desde 2011 es Director del Instituto Bíblico Pastoral Latinoamericano de La Corporación Universitaria Minuto de Dios- UNIMINUTO en Bogotá.

El Padre Daniel Kerber es presbítero de la Arquidiócesis de Montevideo y Doctor en Teología. Actualmente es Vicario Pastoral. Desde hace veinte años es profesor del Nuevo Testamento. Tiene varias divulgaciones y publicaciones académicas. Fué nombrado por el Papa “Auditor” para el Sínodo de los Obispos del 2008, sobre “La Palabra de Dios en la Vida y la Misión de la Iglesia”. Es consultor del CEBITEPAL y participa en el proyecto “Lectionautas”. Durante siete años fue consultor de Traducciones de Sociedades Bíblicas Unidas.

El Padre Dempsey Acosta es sacerdote católico nacido en Maracaibo, Venezuela. Licenciado en filosofía con especialidad en educación por la Universidad Católica Cecilio Acosta en Venezuela. Egresado de la Pontificia Universidad Gregoriana de Roma, obteniendo el grado de doctor en Teología Bíblica. Es licenciado en ciencias bíblicas por el Pontificio Instituto Bíblico de Roma. Desde 2008 se desempeña como experto y consultor para el Roman Catholic Ministries de la Sociedad Bíblica Americana. Actualmente ejerce la docencia a tiempo completo en la Universidad St Thomas, Houston, Texas.

El Padre Mariano Perrón nació en Madrid, España, donde reside. Se ordeno sacerdote en la Arquidiócesis de Madrid en 1973. Estudio Filosofía en 1969 y Teología (Sagrada Escritura) en 1973, en la Universidad Pontificia Comillas. El Padre Perrón era Delegado Episcopal para Ecumenismo y Relaciones Inter-confesionales en la Arquidiócesis de Madrid desde 1974 hasta el 2012. El Padre Perrón era un traductor-adaptador de inglés al español de “Lectio Divina” para las Sociedades-Bíblicas-Unidas en España, desde 2008 hasta el 2010. Sirvió como Consultante y como autor de “Lectio Divina” para American Bible Society desde 2010 hasta el 2016 .

Obtuvo la licenciatura en Teología bíblica por la Universidad Pontificia de México. Se ha desempeñado como docente de Biblia en distintos institutos de formación teológica. Ha compartido diferentes conferencias en la Universidad, en diócesis e institutos. Tiene algunas publicaciones en revistas mexicanas. Es miembro de la Asociación de Biblistas de México. Coordina un proyecto de traducción de Biblia. Es docente y doctoranda en la Universidad Pontificia de México.

Thomas Cardinal Collins, STD Archbishop of Toronto, Canada Keynote Speaker In English

Thomas Christopher Cardinal Collins was born and raised in Guelph, Ontario. In 1969 he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (English) from St. Jerome College in Waterloo. In 1973 he obtained a Master of Arts degree. (English) from the University of Western Ontario and a Bachelor of Theology from St. Peter's Seminary in London, Ontario. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 5, 1973. He received his Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Bible Institute in 1978 and Doctorate in Theology from the Gregorian University in 1986. In 1997 he was appointed as Bishop of Saint Paul, Alberta. Two years later, he was named the Archbishop of Edmonton. In 2001, while in Edmonton, he was named Apostolic Administrator of Saint Paul. In December 2006, he was appointed as the Archbishop of Toronto. During his time thus far in Toronto, Cardinal Collins has served the global church through his membership with the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, Congregation for Catholic Education and Commission of Cardinals for oversight of the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR). He has participated in the Synod on the Eucharist, and the Synod on the Middle East, served as an Apostolic Visitor in Ireland and also as the Delegate of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith for Anglicanorum Coetibus. On January 6, 2012, the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI announced the appointment of Cardinal Collins to the College of Cardinals. He was elevated to the College of Cardinals as Cardinal Priest of San Patrizio on February 18, 2012. Thomas Cardinal Collins is the 16th cardinal in Canadian history.

Juan José Cardenal Omella Arzobispo de Barcelona, España Orador principal en español

Cardenal Juan José Omella nació en Cretas, un pueblo ubicado en la Arquidiócesis de Zaragoza en España. Estudió en el seminario de dicha arquidiócesis y se formó con los Padres Blancos en Lovaina y Jerusalén. Como sacerdote fue Coadjutor, Párroco, Arcipreste y Vicario Episcopal de la Diócesis de Zaragoza. También fue misionero en Zaire. En 1996 fue nombrado Obispo Auxiliar de Zaragoza. En 1999 fue nombrado Obispo de la Diócesis de Barbastro-Monzón. Fue administrador apostólico de Huesca y de Jaca. En el 2004 fue nombrado Obispo de la Diócesis de Calahorra y La Calzada-Logroño. Ha sido responsable de la obra Nacional de Manos Unidas y es miembro de la Congregación para los Obispos. En el 2015 se hizo público su nombramiento como Arzobispo de Barcelona. Fue creado Cardenal por el Papa Francisco el 28 de junio de 2017. Recientemente ha sido nombrado miembro del Tribunal Supremo de la Signatura Apostólica.
