• This app addresses the behavioral aspects of nutrition by helping you set a daily calorie goal and keeping you on track.

• As you enter what you eat, it’ll remind you how many calories you have left in your budget: So it helps you stick to your plan.

• Tech Perspective: • Well designed and easy to use, this app offers the

great visual appearance, usability, and information.

Best Grocery Store App: Slim Down Shopping List

• For this app, the editors of Women’s Health combed grocery store aisles for 250 of the healthiest shelf finds. - This app allows you to search their picks for everything from cereal to snacks. You’ll also get the nutrition info (calories, fiber, sodium) for each item.Requirements: iPhone( or iPod touch, and iPad): http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/slim-down-shopping-list/id331978240?mt=8

• Nutritionists say: The idea to focus on the best packaged/processed foods is certainly helpful when navigating the inside aisles at the grocery store. But stick mostly to the perimeter of grocery stores to fill your shopping cart with clean, natural foods.

• Tech perspective: The interface isn’t familiar so it may take time to get adjusted to the layout and function.

App with the Largest Food Database: Calorie Tracker

• Using a searchable database of more than 525,000 foods and restaurant menu items, you can find basic nutritional info to help you make healthier choices. You can also track your meals and eating habits.Requirements: iPhone (or iPod touch, and iPad), Blackberry: - iphone: http://www.livestrong.com/thedailyplate/iphone-calorie-tracker/ - Blackberry: http://www.livestrong.com/thedailyplate/blackberry-calorie-tracker/

• Nutritionists Say:It’s great because you can set a weight goal, and the app will calculate what your calorie intake should be each day. It will adjust your calorie needs based on your workouts.

• Tech perspective: While this app has a huge database of foods, the usability is not the best. There is no option for browsing foods or activities. So unless you know exactly what you’re looking for, you can’t see the entire spectrum of what’s offered in the food database.

Best App with a Little Help from Your Friends: Health Cubby

 • This app allows you to connect with up to seven friends to work

together in reaching your weight loss goals. You can all chart your progress (or hide your weight if you want more privacy).Requirements: use online, or through your iphone http://www.appcubby.com/health/index.html

• Nutritionists say: While this app lacks guidance (you track everything on your own), it does allow you to interact with other people working toward similar goals. Having a support group will help you stay accountable and allow you to share your struggles and celebrate victories.

• Tech perspective: You’re limited in tracking options. So instead of tracking exactly how many calories you eat each meal by choosing foods, you’re limited to either entering everything by hand or rating the quality of your meals using a star system. All meal ratings are self-reported, not ranked according to calorie counts, nutrients, etc.

Best Nutrition Label App: Mint Nutrition

• Great for eating out or staying in.• This app lets you search for foods at your favorite • restaurants.

Requirements: iphone http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mint-nutrition/id285179960?mt=8

• Nutritionists say: • Because you can use this app to learn the calorie counts and other nutrition

info of what you’re eating, you should be able to choose healthier options when eating out and cook more nutritious meals at home.

• Use the “plate” system to build meals. By putting together “plates” and saving them, you’ll have easy go-to choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

• Tech perspective: • This is quick and easy for people on-the-go if you have to eat out. However,

using it to build a “plate” is time consuming if you want something homemade. You have to enter all of the nutrition facts yourself from the packaging.

Best App for Tracking Progress: The Carrot

• This app is packed with trackers. You can keep a journal (and search foods in the database of nutritional information), keep tabs on your blood pressure, and track your workouts. Requirements: computer or iphone

http://thecarrot.com/• Nutritionist say:

In addition to calorie tracking, this app allows you to keep tabs on health issues -like diabetes. There are many trackers to choose from- it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Start with one at a time. As you make each change part of your lifestyle, slowly add additional trackers like exercise.

• Tech perspective: Nice design—it’s a little unfamiliar and not as intuitive or easy-to-use as other apps, so there is a learning curve.

Best App for Couples who Dine Out: Restaurant Nutrition

• This app takes the guesswork out of choosing menu items with nutrition info on foods from more than 50 restaurants.

• Don’t have an iPhone? You can still create a profile on your spouse’s or friend’s iPhone.

• Nutritionists say: It’s great for couples since you can track multiple people’s eating habits. While fast food obviously isn’t the ideal meal choice, this can help you choose the healthiest option when you’re in a pinch.

• Tech perspective: Being able to access the application without internet access and save your meals right to the iPhone is useful. While you can track what you’re eating at restaurants, you’re limited to those food choices (you can’t enter food you make at home or buy at the store), so unless you eat fast food for every meal, there is no overall calorie tracking option.

eliminate guesswork. Instead of finishing a run and estimating you traveled about 4 miles, that your pace seemed sluggish, that your heart rate felt more elevated than you would have expected, the MapMyFitness apps tell you precisely how you performed in all of these, and more, categories.

Tech perspective: Download the app (Free for iPhone, BlackBerry and
