Even after an extension of themandated time limit to forma new government, Israeli

Prime Minister Netanyahu and hisLikud Party were unable to form acoalition. They then chose to dis-solve the newly-elected parliament, and set a date of September 17thfor another round of national elec-tions. This was to avoid giving themandate to form a governmentback to the president, and takingthe risk that someone else wouldform an unfavorable coalition. Now, the big question is whethera new election will actually changethings sufficiently, so that Ne-tanyahu can form a government. After the last election, Ne-tanyahu held a victory speechwhere he highly praised his party’s

“almost unbelievable” win. Theactual facts surrounding that elec-tion, however, were hardly a greatwin for him. While it’s true that theLikud Party gained some seats, they came at the expense of otherright-leaning parties. In the finalanalysis, conservative parties as awhole actually lost two seats. Thisconfiguration tipped the balance ofpower toward Avigdor Lieber-man’s Israel-Beiteinu Party, anddrove the decision to dissolve theparliament. Without them, Ne-tanyahu wasn’t able to form a gov-ernment that could survive. At its heart, the contest was be-tween Lieberman’s party and thevarious religious parties within thecoalition. Lieberman demandedthat young religious men be re-

cruited into the military and thattheir other privileges in general becut. This position was at the coreof Lieberman’s party, and he wastherefore unwilling to give upsomething that was so fundamen-tal to his campaign. In a last-ditch effort, Netanyahutried to persuade the religious par-ties to accept the demands ofLieberman’s party, and some ofthem even signaled a willingness tocompromise. But the ultra-Ortho-dox parties rejected all compro-mises. It’s interesting to note thatthe young men themselves are notusually against serving in the mili-tary, but the leading rabbis of thevarious religious groups will notallow their young men to serve. The rabbis fear that military serv-ice will let them experience the“other world,” and cause them tofall away from the faith that theyhave been taught. When the final effort to form agovernment failed, the only optionwas to “retreat to the front” andcharge ahead with new elections. That set off a new round of accu-

sations, and should provide plentyof fodder for the election cam-paigns that are now underway.Netanyahu recently accusedLieberman of being a “leftist,”which is almost a cuss word in thecurrent Israeli political climate. Inactuality, though, there’s probablynot a party in Israel that’s any fur-ther right than Lieberman’s.The Israel-Beiteinu party stoodagainst the attempts of the reli-gious parties to make Israel a “Ha-lacha Nation,” meaning a nationthat’s governed according to Or-thodox Jewish laws. Thus, the cur-rent conflict in Israel’s society isn’tso much one of right against left, but rather a question of how theJewish nation chooses to define it-self. It’s a question of whether Is-rael will become a Halacha State,or a modern nation as understoodby most Western countries. In the knowledge that God willfulfill His plans, in spite of the po-litical confusion,Shalom,

The New Covenant

Jesus Christ was the Messiah foretold by theprophets, who was to establish the NewCovenant. His blood is the blood of the NewCovenant.

As early as 600 BC, thus

shortly before the Dias-pora of Israel (the 10

tribes of the Northern Kingdom)and the collapse of Judah (South-ern Kingdom), God declaredthrough Jeremiah that the MosaicCovenant would be replaced. Itwould be superseded by a totallydifferent covenant (Jeremiah31:31-34), which would be God’sNew Covenant with His people. And, in contrast to the Old(Mosaic) Covenant, this one isnot tied to any conditions. Onthe whole, God is promising twothings: forgiveness of sins and anew heart.First, forgiveness of sins (Jer

31:34), which comes to passthrough the shedding of blood,as we read in the Old Testament(Leviticus 17:11). This forgivenessis a complete and final forgiveness, whereas forgiveness under theOld Covenant was merely a cov-ering of guilt. We are shown inthe New Testament that evenunder the Old Covenant, forgive-ness of sins was brought aboutby Jesus retroactively as it were

(Romans 3:25; Hebrews 9:15).This clearly indicates that manno longer has to bring sacrifices;that any further attempt at sac-rifice is an affront to God. God’sSon gave Himself as a sacrificefor man, once and for all. Onaccount of this sacrifice and theblood of Jesus, God has forgivensin (Hebrews 10:8-12; 7:27; 9:12;Ephesians 5:2).Second, God promised a new

order, that is a new heart (Jer31:33-34). In other Old Testamentplaces, we read that this neworder comes about due to theHoly Spirit indwelling God’scovenant partners (Joel 2). JesusChrist was the Messiah foretoldby the prophets, who was toestablish the New Covenant(Hebrews 8). His blood is theblood of the New Covenant(Matthew 26:28). ConcerningHis human descent, He had tobe a son of Abraham and a sonof David. To have the power toforgive sins, He also had to beGod’s son, for only God can for-give sins. In the person of thisJesus, the kingdom of God came

first to the Jews, who at that timewere God’s covenant partner. Butthe Jews did not accept Jesus astheir Messiah; they rejected Him(John 1:11-12). Because of this fact, Jesus now

became the Savior to the wholeworld (Jews, Gentiles, all nations),for all those who accept Him.Thus, we the Gentiles weregrafted into the olive tree Israel(Romans 11:13-24) and becameco-heirs of this New Covenant(Eph 3:5-6). Rejection by His people

resulted in His death (crucifixion),but also in the resurrection, whichproved Jesus to be the Savior ofthe world. Jesus’ death was theatonement for our sins, and onlyby virtue of this sacrifice couldthe New Covenant be established.Forgiveness of sins has thereforebecome the essential characteristicof the New Covenant. The veilto the Holy Place tore from topto bottom, and since then we

have access to God—no longerby way of sacrifices, materialor personal, but solely throughthe sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Nordo we require a representativeor spokesperson any longer tocome before God: no priest, nopope, no bishop and no Mary.Only Jesus Christ is our inter-mediary before God. Since Cal-vary, we can know and approachGod only through Jesus. Thereis no other way (Acts 4:12).The blood shed by Jesus

Christ on the cross for us andHis people has a twofold sig-nificance: 1) It is the blood thatconfirms and seals the NewCovenant (Luke 22:20; Exodus24:8). And 2) His blood, whichis the symbol of His atoningdeath, is the very source of theforgiveness that enables us tohave a new relationship withGod (Jer 31:34).We must realize that the New

Cover Storyabout has an immensely impor-tant meaning for the nations, the Church, and Israel. But here, first and foremost, we want toinquire about the meaning forIsrael. Israel, the actual partnerwith God in the Old (original)Covenant, still rejects the NewCovenant. Consequently, Israelis as yet living under the OldCovenant. This is most strikingamong the Orthodox Jews, withtheir exaggerated legalism. Theysee the smallest task done on aSabbath as sin, and this nolonger has anything to do withthe Biblical commandments. Thus, Israel still lives under theblessing and the curse, as statedin the Old (Mosaic) Covenant.Small wonder then that someJews continue to strictly observethe laws, whether these are Scrip-tural or self-imposed. Mean-while, they don’t realize that thecommandment about love isoverlooked.“Circumcise yourselves to the

LORD, and take away the fore-skins of your heart, ye men ofJudah and inhabitants of

Jerusalem: lest my fury comeforth like fire, and burn thatnone can quench it, because ofthe evil of your doings” (Jer4:4).A right attitude of the heart

is more important than externalformalities. The Jews, exceptthe Messianic Jews, have no partin the New Covenant and there-fore no grace, forgiveness, sal-vation and redemption. However, before long, the peo-

ple of Israel will be converted, will recognize the Lord and acceptHim (Romans 11:25-26). All pre-requisites have long ago beenmet. The perfect sacrifice, JesusChrist, and the Holy Spirit arehere, and since Pentecost Israelhas been asked to accept thisCovenant. When Israel acceptsthe New Covenant, it will alsoreceive the Promised Land in thedimensions promised to Abraham,as well as the Davidic kingdom. This will happen during the thou-sand-year reign. It will be a reignof peace, in which Satan will nolonger have any power.

What’s the Pointof Suffering?

BY NORBERT LIETH

Job’s suffering provides a divine answer to the individual suffering of mankind. Why did the right-eous Job have to suffer so much? Of an ostrich andGod’s non-response…

First, Satan is the originatorof suffering.Second, God allows suffering

for various reasons: as chastise-ment and for the glory of Hisname, or as a visual demonstra-tion for the angelic world. Healso permits it as evidence forSatan that there are still godlypeople, and He allows it as atestimony for other people.Whatever the reason may be, inthe end it all makes sense.Third, Job’s friends show us

that mankind is unable to findany explanation for suffering.Fourth, the fourth man (Elihu)

indicates in his wisdom that Godhasn’t given an explanationregarding His own actions; thatHe isn’t accountable to us: “Whydost thou strive against him?for he giveth not account of anyof his matters” (Job 33:13).

God is God, and not a person. He is the Creator, we arethe created. We cannot control Him,although He controls us.

He has us, and all events, inHis hand. We never have Him in ourhand. He isn’t required to respondto us. However, we mustrespond to Him.He isn’t accountable to us,but we certainly are toHim.Whatever He determines isalways divine, righteous, and good.Everything serves a purposedetermined by Him.

Fifth, Job wanted to argue withGod and justify himself. Godanswered him: “Shall he thatcontendeth with the Almightyinstruct him? he that reprovethGod, let him answer it” (Job40:2). Job later confesses, “there-fore have I uttered that I under-stood not; things too wonderfulfor me, which I knew not” (Job42:3b).Sixth, God Himself answers

Job only indirectly, referencingnature: Where were you whenI established the earth? Have

Page 12: The New Covenant · 2019-07-02 · the New Covenant be established. Forgiveness of sins has therefore become the essential characteristic of the New Covenant. The veil to the Holy

you commanded the morningin as long as you’ve lived? Haveyou ever reached the source ofthe sea? Who makes the rain, the snow, the ice, the frost? What is the way to the dwellingplace of light? Do you fastenthe chains of the Pleiades?(HCSB) Can you loosen Orion’sbelt? Can you display the imagesof the zodiac? (cf. Job 38:4, 12,16, 26, 22, 29, 19, 31). In otherwords: If you have to answerno to all of that, how will youfind an answer to suffering? The Lord then refers to the

creation of the animals (Job 39).Without wasting even one syl-lable on Job’s suffering, He tellsof ibex, deer, wild donkeys andoxen, of horses and vultures, and the ostrich. Let’s just imag-ine: neither Job nor his friends, nor any other person, canexplain suffering. They’re des-perate and looking for ananswer. Job argues with God,and finally He answers. Andhow does He answer? He talks

about an ostrich! The ostrichflutters its wings, but it cannotseem to fly. She leaves her eggsdefenseless on the ground; shetreats her children harshly. Shehas little intellect, but when shewhips herself upward, she laughsat the horse and its rider. Why?Because she is as fast as a mus-cular horse, namely 70 km/h(about 43 mph). This funny birdis truly a puzzle (cf. Job 39:13-18).And that’s supposed to be an

answer to suffering? At most,it’s a bit of a distraction, con-sidering why this bird is the wayit is. But suddenly, one discoversthat there are dimensions behindit more profound than the secretsof creation, but God alone (andnot man) has perfect insight. For us, everything is unfath-omable and we are looking foran answer, and suddenly wehave a whole book by way ofan answer! Then the Lord speaks of a

leviathan (dinosaur? dragon?)

12

Job’s friends show us that mankind is unable to find any explanation for suffering.

What’s the Point of Suffering?

and his sinister power. Of it, Hesays, “None is so fierce thatdare stir him up: who then isable to stand before me?” (Job41:10). That too is an answer.God, in His greatness, isn’taccountable to us for the thingsHe allows, which are too highfor us, which we don’t under-stand.Seventh, the angels, called

“sons of God” in the book ofJob, take part in how humansfare. The angels have insightinto our world; we are a testi-mony to them, a drama (1 Cor4:9; 11:10; Eph 3:10; 1 Tim5:21). This alone can be a reason

for suffering to bepermitted, becausethe entirety of eventsin our world timeand with regard toIsrael serves theangels in their wor-ship of God. Thiswas already the casewith creation (Job38:7), and will be so

again at the end of the age (Rev4:9; 16:5; 19:1, 3-4, 6).Eighth, the end of the book

of Job shows us that none ofwhat God permits is ever arbi-trary or tyrannical. It alwaysserves a specific purpose, andshows us that God isn’t callousand apathetic, but, on the con-trary, full of compassion andmercy: “As you know, we countas blessed those who have per-severed. You have heard of Job’sperseverance and have seenwhat the Lord finally broughtabout. The Lord is full of com-passion and mercy” (Jam 5:11NIV).

14

What’s the Point of Suffering?

How can we live in this

world and endure

suffering, precisely when

we don’t feel like “spiritual giants”? By

repeatedly thanking God for everything,

even when we don’t feel like it. “Giving

thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our

Lord Jesus Christ” (Eph 5:20). All our thoughts and deeds, whatever may

befall us, are accompanied by our thanksgiving in the name of Jesus. In

this way we are made one with Christ, who suffered on the cross for us (cf.

Luke 9:23). “The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be

the name of the LORD” (Job 1:21b). This must be more than just an empty

phrase for us, so that we can sincerely pray, “Father, give me the strength

to accept everything from Your hand, because You are good and Your will

for me is good. Blessed be Your name.” It was once noted, “It’s a dreadful

thing for the demons to see a Christian who accepts suffering. Consider

how Satan was overcome by Job, who refused to curse God in his

circumstances.”

In the end, Job was repaiddouble all his goods and livedfor another 140 years. Thismakes spiritual sense: the invoiceis tallied at the end, and anyonewho has steadfastly persevered

and overcome will receive wages. It also shows that suffering, however difficult it may be andhowever long it may last, isalways finite. The day is comingwhen it will end. (MR0319/995)

3,000-Year-Old Tablet IdentifiesBiblical King BalakThe study of an ancient tablet that dates backnearly 3,000 years suggests that the biblical KingBalak may have been an actual historical figure.

Published in Tel Aviv: The Journal of the Institute ofArchaeology of Tel Aviv University, the study looks

at the Mesha Stele and makes the determination that afterlooking at new photos of the cracked tablet, Balak existed, though the researchers are not 100 percent certain of it.“It is now clear that there are three consonants in the

name of the monarch mentioned there, and that the first isa beth. We cautiously propose that the name on Line 31 beread as Balak, the king of Moab referred to in the Balaamstory in Numbers 22–24,” the researchers wrote.

The Mesha Stele, which is alsoknown as the Moabite Stone, is aninscribed tablet that dates back to 840B.C. and was discovered in 1868 byresearcher Frederick Augustus Klein. It had previously been theorized that

Line 31 was a reference to the House ofDavid. However, the researchers, led bythe study’s lead author, IsraelFinkelstein, believe the letter “B” isthere and it is not a reference to “beth,”the Hebrew word for “house,” but ratherBalak.Although the study’s authors,

Finkelstein, Nadav Na’aman andThomas Römer, have theorized thatBalak may have been an actual person, their “proposal is very tentative,” RonaldHendel, a professor of the Hebrew Bibleand Jewish Studies at the University ofCalifornia, Berkeley, told Live Science.Hendel was not involved in the study.Finkelstein [told] Live Science:

“[T]he study shows how a story in theBible may include layers (memories)from different periods which werewoven together by later authors into astory aimed to advance their ideologyand theology. Commentary: Quite surprisingly, itis the heathen prophet, Balaam, whoreveals Israel’s position among thenations of the world. In Numbers23:9, he proclaims the coming of theLord and that Israel is separate fromall nations of the world: “For fromthe top of the rocks I see him, andfrom the hills I behold him: lo, thepeople shall dwell alone, and shallnot be reckoned among the nations.”But there is more: this heathen

prophet reveals to the world howIsrael should be viewed: “He hathnot beheld iniquity in Jacob, neitherhath he seen perverseness in Israel:the Lord his God is with him, andthe shout of a king is among them…Surely there is no enchantmentagainst Jacob, neither is there anydivination against Israel: according

to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel,What hath God wrought!” (Numbers 23:21, 23). Thatdescribes a virtually perfect nation; it is Israel’s positionfrom God’s perspective.Yet other verses clearly show Israel’s stubborn dis-

obedience. Exodus 32:9: “And the Lord said untoMoses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is astiffnecked people”; or, Numbers 14:22: “Because allthose men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and havetempted me now these ten times, and have not hear-

kened to my voice.”What is the lesson? God protects

His people, calls them His own; andwe—that is, the world—should notinterfere, much less judge the nation. That is the message of Balaam tothe nations. 7021

It’s about data and artificial intelligence, and I think Israel is one of the most inter-esting countries when it comes to think-ing about data and artificial intelligence.”Recognizing that much of the game-

changing innovation emerges from theglobal start-up scene, Samsung hasinvested in excess of $2 billion in start-ups through its Samsung Catalyst Fund.Approximately one-quarter of the invest-ments Samsung made last year, Chan-dran said, have been in Israelicompanies.Rutie Adar, head of Samsung’s Her-

zliya-based Strategy and InnovationCenter, told the Post that the company’sinterest in Israeli innovation is alwaysa two-way, mutually-beneficial relation-ship.“For Samsung, it is clear that we

cannot develop innovation alone, espe-cially when it’s about tackling huge orcomplex challenges, like healthcare andmobility. We need to work with com-panies, whether it ’s investments oracquisitions,” Adar said.“On the other hand, Samsung is the

Commentary:While South Korea’sSamsung is the largest technologyplatform in the world, it becomesincreasingly clear that the centerof technological knowledge isshifting toward Israel. This shouldnot be surprising to Bible readers, because Israel is destined to bethe leading nation on planet earth. This is especially noticeable whencompared to the surrounding Arabstates, of which most can be con-sidered third-world, poverty-stricken countries. Commentary: Although there areconflict zones in places such as theMiddle East, Africa, and SoutheastAsia, and minor flare-ups in SouthAmerica, the world at large is at peace.War between the European nationsis all but out of the question. Theworld’s largest military spender, theUS, faces no legitimate threat fromany nation, at least at this time. Thus,we ask the question: why moreweapons? Here we must consultprophetic Scripture. Joel 3:9-10: “Pro-claim ye this among the Gentiles; Pre-pare war, wake up the mighty men,let all the men of war draw near; letthem come up: Beat your plowsharesinto swords and your pruninghooksinto spears: let the weak say, I amstrong.” This, of course, refers to thetime of Armageddon. During that

time, all the nations of the world willexperience total defeat. Followingwill be the Lord’s decree to destroyall weapons: “And he shall judgeamong many people, and rebukestrong nations afar off; and they shallbeat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks:nation shall not lift up a sword against

nation, neither shallthey learn war anymore” (Micah 4:3).

The conflict between Hamasin Gaza and Israel sees noend. Loss of life, destruc-

tion of property, and living withthe constant threat of danger ispart of life in Gaza as well asacross the border in Israel.Hamas continues to claim that

Israel’s blockade by air, sea, andland is the reason for their re-peated attacks, mainly by rockets, against Israeli civilian targets. Is-rael’s Ministry of Foreign Affairsstated: “The 2014 Gaza Conflictwas a peak in the ongoing armedconflict waged against Israel forover a decade by terrorist organi-zations operating from the GazaStrip. The tactics of Hamas andother terrorist organizations dur-ing the conflict [were a] violationof international law.” What iscrystal clear is that Israel is actingdefensively. The government,

with its military might, is respon-sible for the security of its citizens.Recently, BBC reported the fol-

Who Is Hamas?Hamas, English Islamic Resist-ance Movement, militant IslamicPalestinian nationalist movementin the West Bank and Gaza Stripthat is dedicated to the establish-ment of an independent Islamicstate in historical Palestine.Founded in 1987, Hamas op-posed the secular approach of thePalestine Liberation Organization(PLO) to the Israeli-Palestinianconflict and rejected attempts tocede any part of Palestine. From the late 1970s, Islamic

activists connected with the pan-Islamic Muslim Brotherhood es-tablished a network of charities, clinics, and schools and becameactive in the territories (the Gaza

Strip and West Bank) occupied byIsrael after the 1967 Six-Day War.In Gaza they were active in manymosques, while their activities inthe West Bank generally were lim-ited to the universities. The Mus-lim Brotherhood’s activities inthese areas were generally nonvi-olent, but a number of smallgroups in the occupied territoriesbegan to call for jihad, or holywar, against Israel. In December1987, at the beginning of thePalestinian intifadah (Arabicintifādah, “shaking off”) uprisingagainst Israeli occupation, Hamas(which also is an Arabic wordmeaning “zeal”) was establishedby members of the Muslim Broth-erhood and religious factions ofthe PLO, and the new organiza-tion quickly acquired a broad fol-lowing. In its 1988 charter,Hamas maintained that Palestineis an Islamic homeland that cannever be surrendered to non-Mus-lims and that waging holy war towrest control of Palestine from Is-rael is a religious duty for Pales-tinian Muslims. brought it into conflict with thePLO, which in 1988 recognized Is-rael’s right to exist.-https://www.britannica.com/topic/Hamas

Any hope for a lasting peace agree-ment between Hamas and Israel isall but out of the question at thistime. The tragedy goes on, withlives lost, property destroyed, andalarming events occurring daily. With this, we come to another

side of the Gaza issue, and that isthe wonderful news of the Gospelof Jesus Christ. When reading Actschapter 8, we notice that Saul, wholater became Paul, consented tothe stoning death of Stephen, thefirst Christian martyr. From thatpoint on, great persecution by thereligious authorities in Jerusalemagainst the Church, led to a greatmissionary awakening, as verse 4reports: “Therefore they that werescattered abroad went every wherepreaching the word.”Phillip, who went to Samaria,

preached Christ there until God’ssupernatural intervention, as we

read in the introductory Scripture. The place the angel instructed himto go was toward Gaza, in thedesert. And, from there the Gospelwent to Africa, before the gloriousmessage reached Europe. That Gaza was mentioned may

indicate that they had the opportu-nity to hear the Gospel. We haveno further record in Scripture onhow they reacted, but we do knowone thing with absolute certainty:the simple summary of the Gospel,as stated in the most-quotedverse—John 3:16—is applicable toall people at all times. That, inci-dentally, is the hope of Gaza, thehope of Israel, and the hope for theworld. Only when the Prince ofPeace arrives—when His feet shallstand on the Mount of Olives—will He, the King of Kings andLord of Lords, order the destruc-tion of all weapons. He will insti-tute peace, peace that the worldneeds, peace that passes all under-standing. That is the wondrous fu-ture the prophets of the Biblepredict. NFI

Honoring one’s parentsbegins from childhood, and is demonstrated

first by behavior that acknowl-edges their authority. Honoringone’s parents doesn’t just ex-press itself by what we say, butmost of all by what we do forthem in practice. In manyways, honoring one’s parents isa demanding task and not alight matter at all. The depth ofour love for our parents is ex-pressed in the measure inwhich we are willing to sacri-fice for them (effort, time, careand money).

Paul reminds Timothy (1Tim 5:3-4) that care for parentsis first and foremost the duty ofthe children and grandchil-dren—not of society, not of thechurch, and not of an elderlyhome. And, because this dutyis not any easy one, Paul writesthat they must “first learn toshow piety at home and to re-pay their parents; for this isgood and acceptable beforeGod.” The Pharisees needed tolearn this truth, because theydespised the sanctity of thecommandment of honoring

The commandment, “Honor thy father and thy moth-er” (Ex 20:12a) is the basis for our vision here at theEbenezer Home. Paul reminds the believers in Ephesusof this commandment (Eph 6:1-2).

one’s parents for the good oftheir own pockets (Matt 15:4-6). Yet, although we may love and

honor our parents, we are not al-ways able to give them the verybest care without help from oth-ers. Love and honor can’t replaceprofessional care, and this is theplace where the qualified mem-bers of the body can come intothe picture and provide devotedcare; as if our parents were theirown parents! The Lord Jesus Himself gave

us the greatest example of carefor one’s parents as He hung onthe cross (John 19:25-27): “Nowthere stood by the cross of JesusHis mother, and His mother’s sis-

ter, Mary the wife of Clopas, andMary Magdalene. When Jesustherefore saw His mother, andthe disciple whom He lovedstanding by, He said to Hismother, ‘Woman, behold yourson!’ Then He said to the disci-ple, ‘Behold your mother!’ Andfrom that hour that disciple tookher to his own home.” Eventhough the Lord Jesus had rela-tives that were His own flesh andblood, He committed His ownmother into John’s hands. Why?Because he was the right per-son—able; and in the rightplace—available (at the foot ofthe cross); and with the rightheart—love.
