‘Bobby Womack, the ‘bravest man’ in R&B, is on the comeback trail’

The Bravest Man in the Universe is the title of soul legend Bobby Womack’s latest album, his 27th studio album to be exact, and the first with original material since 1994’s Resurrection. If the title was a more accurate assessment of both his life and career, however, it would be called “still standing” or “soul survivor.”

For his musical legacy is steeped in an era many would call among the greatest in all of black music. Sam Cooke, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stone, Janis Joplin, The Rolling Stones… and if you can name a musical great from his era, Bobby Womack has a personal tie to them.

Born Robert Dewayne Womack on March 4, 1944 into a musical family, where his father was a minister who played the guitar and his mother played the organ. Bobby Womack and his four brothers [Friendly, Curtis, Harry and Cecil] began performing as The Womack Brothers on the gospel circuit when Bobby was just eight. In 1954, when he was just 10, they released “Buffalo Bill,” along with “Bible Tells Me So,” as Curtis Womack and the Womack Brothers.

Sam Cooke, himself, took an interest early, signing them to his SAR Records. At first, they recorded gospel songs but then, like so many others, made the switch to secular music, a move of which their father, in keeping with many elders of their time, highly disapproved. In fact, church black folk frequently boycotted records by one-time gospel artists and ostracized them from those circles.

Recording secularly as The Valentinos, their early work, like most “soul” music, was largely worldly twists on gospel songs. “Lookin’ for a Love,” their first single, played upon the spiritual, “Couldn’t Hear Nobody Pray,” which they previously recorded.

In 1964, their future looked especially bright and Bobby’s talent was shining more and more. The Rolling Stones scored their first number one with a cover of The Valentinos’s “It’s All Over Now,” which Bobby co-wrote. Then tragedy struck: Sam Cooke was mur-dered that same year. Bobby may have very well carried the torch but marrying Sam Cooke’s widow just four months after Sam’s death stopped his career in its tracks.

“They used to have me on the bill as ‘the boy who married Sam Cooke’s wife,’” Bobby said in his episode of Unsung, which pre-miered on TV One earlier this year. Sam Cooke’s brothers even beat him. Radio disc jockeys flat out refused to play his music. So he turned to session work as a guitarist, playing on records for Joe Tex and Aretha Franklin. He also kept writing. “I’m a Midnight Mover” and “I’m in Love” for Wilson Pickett led to a record deal in 1968, with Bobby releasing his first solo album, Fly Me to the Moon. His gritty cover of “California Dreamin’” by The Mamas and The Papas was his first hit as a solo artist.

During the Sam Cooke scandal, he had turned to drugs. As he worked in the 1970s with Sly and the Family Stone, Janis Joplin, whom he was among the last to see alive, and many others, he was constantly high. But so was his career. His albums Understanding and Across 110th Street, the soundtrack for the classic Blaxploitation film, yielded such classics as “Woman’s Gotta Have It,” “Harry Hip-pie” and, of course, “Across 110th Street,” which was also featured in Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, starring Pam Grier.

The hits dried up in the late ‘70s, but then Bobby struck gold again in 1981 with “You Think You’re Lonely Now,” which is a sta-ple in K-Ci and JoJo shows, thanks to the popularity of K-Ci’s 1994 cover of the song, and was referenced by name in Mariah Carey’s 2005 hit “We Belong Together.” He also hit with “I Wish He Didn’t Trust Me So Much,” about a man doing his best not to desire his best friend’s woman, which people easily applied to his situation with Sam Cooke’s widow, as well as the duet “Love Has Finally Come At

Audra McDonald takes best actress at the Tonys

NEW YORK (AP) — The bittersweet musical “Once” captured eight Tony Awards on Sunday, including best direction of a musical, best lead actor in a musical and the top musical prize itself.

The inventive play “Peter and the Starcatcher” was next with five awards, but most every show came away with something to crow about.

Bruce Norris’ “Clybourne Park,” the remarkably perceptive Pulit-zer Prize-winning play about race and real estate, won the best play Tony.

Audra McDonald was named best lead actress in a musical and her “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess” was named best musical re-vival. This is her fifth Tony Award, tying the competitive record held by Angela Lansbury and Julie Harris.

“I was a little girl with a potbelly and afro puffs, hyperactive and overdramatic. And I found the theater, and I found my home,” McDonald said. Looking at her daughter, she said her big night was-n’t as wonderful as the night her daughter was born.

Her one-time co-star in “110 in the Shade,” Steve Kazee, a 36-year-old rising star and guitar player with matinee idol looks, emerged as best actor in a musical, and broke down thinking of his mother, who died Easter Sunday.

Another new star, Nina Arianda, won best leading actress in a play, beating stiff competition from Tracie Bennett, Stockard Chan-ning, Linda Lavin and Cynthia Nixon.

Accepting the award from presenter Christopher Plummer, Ari-anda admitted something very personal to the 82-year-old Plummer: “You were my first crush!” she squealed.

In perhaps the biggest shock of the night, James Corden nabbed

Mary J. Blige to play Betty Shabazz in ‘Parallel Lives’

by theGrio | June 11, 2012 at 12:50 PM

Singer turned actress Mary J. Blige will play civil rights leader Malcolm X’s wife in a new TV drama. According to WENN, Blige will co-star as Betty Shabbazz in Parallel Lives, a film about the similari-ties of the lives of Coretta Scott King and Shabazz, the wives of two of the most prominent fig-ures in the civil rights move-ment. WENN reports:

Mary J. Blige has signed

on to play civil rights hero Malcolm X’s wife in a new TV drama. The R&B star, who makes her debut as a leading lady on the screen in the upcoming Rock of Ages, will play Betty Sha-bazz in Parallel Lives. She tells WENN, “It’s about the lives of Coretta Scott King and Betty Shabazz, the women in Malcolm X’s and Martin Luther King’s life.

Last,” with Patti LaBelle.

He got another major musical lifeline from across the pond in 2010 when he appeared on the Gorillaz album Plastic Beach, along-side Mos Def, for “Stylo.” That success led to his latest album on XL Recordings, which also did Gil Scott-Heron’s last album.

“If you tell the truth, truth never goes out of style,” he says in the video “The Making of The Bravest Man in the Universe” on his web-site. And that’s been a secret to his musical longevity. There’s a raw emotion that permeates his work. You can hear pain, sorrow, regret and even joy in his music, which he says has largely been inspired by his life experiences or that of those around him.

He’s cheated death more times than anybody can count, including a shooting by his first wife, Sam Cooke’s widow Barbara, after she discovered he was romantically involved with her teenage daughter, Linda, who later married his brother Cecil. Drugs, cocaine in particu-lar, which he used for at least 30 years, could have also taken him out but didn’t. And, most recently, he beat prostate cancer. According to an article in The Guardian a few weeks ago, he was just in the hospi-tal with pneumonia.

“It feels like they spared me to tell the story,” he says in that same video. And he didn’t hold much back in his 2007 autobiography, Mid-night Mover: The True Story of the Greatest Soul Singer in the World, including his very well-known moral shortcomings.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter if The Bravest Man in the Universe, which sometimes displays a man on his last act with songs like “Deep River,” a classic spiritual that harkens back to Bobby’s gospel roots where he truthfully sings “I ain’t got long to stay here,” ranks among his greatest recordings. Certainly the songs with Euro-hip beats won’t be to everyone’s liking and, definitely the lack of true reflection and introspection over the last 68 years of living that have made his work stand out, doesn’t help.

His voice may be weathered but his spirit is omnipresent. After all, if there’s one person who, today, embodies black music history of the 20th century at its best, it’s Bobby Womack and, yes, he still has a story to tell.

the lead acting Tony Award in a play for his clownish turn in the British import “One Man, Two Guvnors.” He beat out the favorite, Philip Seymour Hoffman in “Death of a Salesman.”

Corden directed most of his comment to his girlfriend, Julia, who gave birth to his son a year ago and whom he intends to marry soon.

“I would not be holding this if it wasn’t for her. She made me say ‘us’ instead of ‘I’ and ‘we’ instead of ‘me’ and I love her,” he said.

Arthur Miller’s 63-year-old masterpiece “Death of a Salesman” won the Tony for best play revival and Mike Nichols won his ninth Tony for directing it. On winning, he said the play has a special meaning for those who work in the theater.

“There’s not a person in this theater that doesn’t know what it is to be a salesman — to be out there in the blue riding on a smile and a shoeshine,” he said. “As we know, a salesman has got to dream. It goes with the territory.”

The reworked version of the Gershwin opera “Porgy and Bess” managed to come home with more and more prestigious awards than a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “Follies.”

Diane Paulus, the artistic director of the American Repertory Theater, adapted it for Broadway with Pulitzer Prize-winning play-wright Suzan-Lori Parks and Obie Award-winning composer Diedre Murray.

The team condensed the four-hour opera into a two-and-one-half-hour musical, eliminated a lot of the repetitiveness and tried to deepen the characters. Their effort generated headlines when purists including Sondheim complained that a musical treasure was being corrupted.

Theater audiences disagreed, with fans cheering the new work, which featured songs such as “Summertime” and “Bess, You Is My Woman Now.”

“Once,” a musical based on the low-budget 2006 film about an unlikely romance between a Czech flower seller and an Irish street musician in Dublin, went into the night with a leading 11 nomina-tions. “Newsies” was supposed to challenge it, but only came up with two awards.

Composer Alan Menken, who has more Oscars than any other living person, captured his first Tony for “Newsies.” The win for “Newsies” is particularly sweet since when he and lyricist Jack Feldman originally wrote the songs for the 1992 film of “Newsies,” he was given another sort of award: a “Razzie.”

Judy Kaye won for best actress in a featured role in a musical in “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” playing a temperance worker who turns out likes to drink and hangs from a chandelier at one point. It’s Kaye’s second Tony — she also won for “The Phantom of the Op-era.”

“I guess chandeliers have been very, very good to me,” she said to a burst of laughter. She dedicated the award to her father, who died last week.

Judith Light, who plays an acerbic alcoholic in “Other Desert Cities,” won for for best featured actress in a play. Michael McGrath won for best actor in a featured musical role from “Nice Work If You Can Get It.”

The show at the Beacon Theatre actually began with a nod to the past, with host Neil Patrick Harris joining with the cast of “The Book of Mormon” for their opening number of “Hello!” from the 2011 musical winner. The show ended when Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the co-creators of “Mormon,” handing out the final award.

Christopher Gattelli, who thrillingly combined ballet with bold

athletic moves in “Newsies, won the best choreography Tony. It is his first award; he previously was nominated for “South Pacific” in 2008.

The three-hour telecast was packed with stars and performances from musicals, plays and revivals. The explosion of performances is an attempt to showcase as much on Broadway as possible. One per-formance wasn’t even nearby — the song from “Hairspray” was per-formed from a cruise ship in the Caribbean Sea.

The Tony Awards show is serious business and the exposure in front of millions is priceless. Many shows that are suffering pre-summer slumps are counting on a bump from the telecast. “Godspell” producer Ken Davenport was warned that his production’s future may hinge on making a splash at the ceremony.

Overall, the health of Broadway is good, with shows yielding a record $1.14 billion in grosses this season, and total attendance reach-ing 12.3 million. The only concern is that audience numbers were flat, meaning higher ticket prices are pushing the overall box office take.

Succumbs to Cancer Friday Jun 15, 2012 – by Britni Danielle

Comedian and Actress Yvette Wilson lost her long battle with cervical cancer Thursday evening, passing away at the age of 48-years-old.

Last month we reported about Wilson’s struggle with the disease and the fundraising effort on her behalf to pay for her mounting medical bills, but the actress best-known for her staring roles in the sit-coms Moesha and The Parkers succumbed to the disease.

Fans and colleagues have been sending their con-dolences via Twitter and Facebook, and her close friend and former co-star Shar Jackson expressed her grief over Wilson’s death, tweeting, “Oh god….. My heart is soooo unbelievably broken ….”

Jackson went on to thank those who expressed their condolences for her friend, telling fans, “I wanna thank all my tweeties for their prayers but god has chosen to take my sister Yvette home…..”

After attending San Jose State University in Cali-fornia, Wilson began her entertainment career as a stand up comic, touring the comedy club circuit be-fore landing several on screen roles including Def Comedy Jam, House Party 3, Friday, In Living Color, Moesha, and the Parkers.

Veteran Educator Proposes a Way for

Creating Smart Schools

New book offers a process for the creation of smart or effective schools through the development and implementation of the Educational Instructional

Coaching Model WESTBURY, N.Y. – According to John Dewey, education is not a

preparation for life, but is life itself. As a veteran educator committed to public education, Dr. Judith Kronin pens Creating Smart Schools, a book that pro-poses a model that makes it possible for every student to attain a quality edu-cation.

Ron Edmonds spoke in an uncompromising voice, “All children can learn.” Today, Kronin speaks with the same resounding spirit and says, “All educators can teach.” Creating Smart Schools is a book that offers a process for the creation of effective schools through the development and implementa-tion of the Educational Instructional Coaching Model. This model, (EICM), will enable American students to earn top scores on the Programme for Inter-national Students Assessment (PISA). EICM evolved from research and a set of core beliefs, which include the following:

The major goal of educators is to inspire students to become critical thinkers and independent learners.

Educators must create environments of small learning communities where a major portion of instruction is devoted to problem solving.

Educators must create lesson plans that inspire students to increase their enjoyment of good questions and help them work out their own under-standing of “static” knowledge like mathematics, science, and reading.

Teachers must design student-directed instructions. Educational reform is comprehensive and involves every member of

the educational community. Instructional coaching, which requires mutual respect between a coach

and teacher, is the cornerstone for improving classroom instruction. Made available through Xlibris, Creating Smart Schools is the guide-

book to what every school needs for every student to attain quality education. For more information on this book, interested parties may log on to

As Publisher of the Community Journal I highly recommend reading this book, especially if you

have children living in Nassau County...

eBay Store Closed

My eBay store, The Quality Corner 1, is now closed. After much delib-

eration, I decided to close it last month. It was not an easy decision, but it is the best course right now.

I opened the store back in 2008 and it was my pride and joy. I worked very hard to grow my eBay business. In 2009, I expanded to selling books and audiobooks world-wide. In 2010, I became a Power Seller and an eBay Top Rated Seller. I felt good about my accomplishments at that time.

In 2011, eBay made several changes to the fee structure and seller requirements. During the entire time I've sold on eBay, they have continued to make policy changes. However, the most recent changes caused me to reconsider my eBay busi-ness. I decided to keep the store open through the busiest season of the year. After a slow holiday sea-son, I became discouraged. After reviewing my prof-its, I made the final decision to close the store in Feb-ruary. As the saying goes, "if it doesn't make dollars, it doesn't make sense."

Even though my eBay store is closed, The Qual-ity Corner is still open. I maintain my relationship with a very large book distributor, therefore, I still have access to over 2 million titles in print and audio. I will continue to take special requests and ship books directly to my customers. I have several local customers, including the Columbus City School district. I am very thankful for my loyal customers and I look forward to continually providing quality products and quality service in the future.

The online segment of my business is continuing to grow. I am now selling ebooks, music and entertainment on my blog. You can view my selection here. Also, I am an affiliate for Barnes & Noble, so I will be promoting their products and passing on sav-ings to my readers. You can read more about that here. I intend to focus more on my book review service as well. To learn more about book promotion through reviews, trailers and press releases, view my website at www.blackbookreview.com.

Museum Mission Statement The mission of the African American Museum of Nassau County [AAM] is

to provide programming and events that foster the intellectual development of community members and visitors with an interest in African-American art, history and culture. A primary goal is to disseminate the history of African-Americans on Long Island and the African-American contribution to the social and cultural development of American society through material and visual culture. The AAM, located in Hempstead, New York, opened in 1970, at the

height of the black power movement, as the Black History Exhibit Center. It is the only African American history museum on Long Island, and is located to serve Nassau County’s largest African-American population. The museum is a multi-disciplinary cultural institution that provides art installations, historical exhibitions, film pro-grams, community service events, and educational programming. This 6,000-square-foot facility, offers a rotating series of exhibits showcasing local and na-tional African American artists. The African Ameri-can Museum also houses the African Atlantic Geneal-ogy Society. This organization provides workshops and individual research instruction in family geneal-ogy. The museum has installed a new E-Learning Program that offers an innovative pedagogical ap-proach, using subject headings relative to Americans of African descent, for conducting research on the internet. The AAM is cur-rently working on methods to expand the community’s understanding of knowledge organization methods, literary warrant, and information retrieval and how these relate to African-American social history.

Get up and get healthy at the children’s museum

With summer vacation right around the corner, it’s a good time to get up, get out and get healthy. This week families can learn fun ways to stay healthy using animals as their inspira-tion! We’ll be acting out natural movements of animals from around the globe, then creating a nutritious snack on Saturday af-ternoon.

Program and Performance Schedule – June 18-24

Spark of Art

Tuesday, June 19 through Friday, June 22 from 2:30-4 p.m.

Join us in the Inner Lobby as we spark your imagination and creativity! Collage, color and cut your own masterpiece as you explore different mediums at our crazy craft buffet

A Taste of Tortilla—Get Up and Go series Saturday, June 23 from 2:30-4:30 Come celebrate National Zoo & Aquarium Month at LICM! Mil-lions of animals in the wild have feeding patterns that match their habitats, and you will rarely find one that is overweight or un-healthy! Follow us as we act out the natural movements of ani-mals all around the globe. Then create a nutritious snack using tortillas shaped like different animals. The Get Up and Go! series is sponsored by a grant from the Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York.

All ages. Free with museum admission.

New Traveling Exhibit - Framed: Step into Art™

June 15 through September 2

Enter the framework of fa-mous paintings, arrange works of art into your own art gallery,

create a chalk wall mural, and experience art like never before in Framed: Step into Art™. This imaginative and interactive ex-

hibit is sure to bring out the in-ner artist in everyone!

Uncover your artistic side through a number of creative activities, including:

· Explore Grant Wood's Din-ner for Threshers first hand and sit down for some home cooking before heading to the barn to check on the farm animals.

· Travel back to the Cana-dian Rockies in 1916 and dis-covering camping gear like John Singer Sargent would have used.

· Ride Clementine Hunter's Big Chicken and helping com-plete Diego Rivera's mural Corn Festival.

· View original and famous parodies of “Mona Lisa”; create

your own version of Mona Lisa's enigmatic expression

· Be the Artist by creating

your own wall mural with chalk and Create Your Own Gallery by arranging works of art in frames.

· Embark on an “art hunt” and record your responses to the art at a talk back computer station.

Framed: Step into Art™ was created by the Minnesota Children’s Museum.

This exhibit is made possi-ble by Astoria Federal Savings.
