RESTAURANT GUIDE: SEE WHAT’S NEW!

With over 120 restaurants, the 2017-2018 edition of the Downtown Surrey Restaurant Guide will be your go-to guide for where to eat out in BC’s fastest growing downtown core. With a release date set later this summer, the guide features classic favourites like Fresgo Inn Restaurant (here since 1970) and Round Up Café

(here since 1959) as well as brand new neighbours, some of which include Spicy Bowl (an Indian- style Chinese restaurant with rich flavours), Sushi King George (with fresh sushi and a great atmosphere), and Dominion Kitchen + Bar (an upscale dining establishment opening at the top of 3 Civic Plaza this fall).

The Restaurant Guide was first released in 2006, according to DSBIA manager Bonnie Burnside, to make Downtown Surrey’s restaurants more readily accessible. Over the years, it has evolved into its current state, with an online version at www.downtownsurrey.com and print version

available at the DSBIA office as well as at select community locations.

When a City Centre grows as rapidly as Surrey’s has, a strong cultural foundation is very important. Throughout history, food has brought people together and fostered culture. The community in Downtown Surrey is no different. It is no coincidence that Fusion Festival (a world class cultural celebration with over 40 nations represented in food pavilions) is hosted right in Holland Park. One of the greatest strengths of the restaurant scene here is the variety – with top notch food from many different ethnic backgrounds, Surrey foodies can travel the world right in their own hometown.

The guide features every restaurant’s key information, including their name, address, and phone

number. Each restaurant chose a “signature dish” to give readers an idea of their most popular menu items. From Jasna Café’s avo-tomato-bacon benny, to Bahay Kubo’s beef calderita, to Alebi African Cuisine’s coconut milk chicken, you are sure to find a winner. As in previous years, the guide also identifies with icons which restaurants offer catering, space for private functions of 30 or more, delivery, and/or live entertainment.

The first three of these are particularly useful for business people in the area, who can quickly see which restaurants will fit the needs of their next meeting or work lunch. Currently, 59 Downtown Surrey restaurants cater, 35 can accommodate a private function of thirty or more, 42 offer delivery, and 10 host live entertainment.

New this year are the “Night Owl” and “Explore The George” icons; these show which restaurants are open late and which have been featured in the DSBIA’s Explore The George video series (explorethegeorge.com). Like Surrey’s own Chef’s Table, the Explore The George videos showcase each restaurant’s unique story, cuisine, and personality behind their food. This is a great way to preview a restaurant before trying it.

Get your Downtown Surrey Restaurant Guide at www.downtownsurrey.com/RestaurantGuide or pick up your physical copy at Suite 330 - 10362 King George Boulevard.

Located in the upper level section of Central City Shopping Centre, Angel’s Kisses is Surrey’s premier destination for children’s formal wear. In sizes ranging from 3 months to teens, there is something for every flower girl, ring bearer, or prom queen on your list.

Angel’s Kisses opened over 10 years ago, but has been in its current location in Surrey for the last 2 and a half years. Hannah, the owner, has lived in Surrey for the past 11 years and says Downtown Surrey has been the perfect place to run her business.

Angel’s Kisses is unique as it offers a large variety of clothes for both boys and girls. The entire store is lined with items, from party dresses to lacy gowns, to boy’s tuxedos and dress shirts. They also carry a variety of accessories including bracelets, gloves and tiaras.

When asked why she moved her business to Downtown Surrey, Hannah replied that “people are willing to spend money on nice quality things for their kids here. It is a very family orientated community”.

Whether you’re looking for a boy’s suit, a dress for a first communion, or some beautiful jewelry and tiaras to adorn a gown, look no further then Angel’s Kisses. Their wide selection, great prices and family orientated atmosphere make it the best place to buy formal wear for your children.

Having lived here for the past 8 years, Downtown Surrey was the ideal location for Ken Whitney to open his new personal training centre, Kenneth’s Soul Purpose Fitness. A private training centre that offers intimate one-on-one training, Ken has over 12 years of experience in the field and is very knowledgeable on both training and nutrition.

What makes Kenneth’s Soul Purpose Fitness unique from other training centres is that it is a private gym. To workout you must book an appointment, and you can then exercise without having to worry about the obstacles that can come with a busy public gym. One on one training means there is no need to wait around for equipment or worry whether or not you are doing the exercises correctly. Couple this with Ken’s personal training knowledge and a post-workout massage and you are sure to see results in no time.

Ken recently started a new program called “Praise, Worship and Workout”. Every day beginning at 12 pm groups of 5-8 people can team up and do a high intensity workout to upbeat gospel music. This boot-camp style program runs for just $8 per person. If you don’t have a large enough team, Ken says not to worry! Groups of 3 can begin at any time, just contact Ken to arrange a time for your workout.

Check out Kenneth’s Soul Purpose Fitness at 10663 King George Blvd today or call 604-808-1893 to start your personal training experience today.

INTRODUCING…

FEEZAH JAFFER

We would like to welcome Feezah Jaffer to her new role at the Surrey Food Bank as Executive Director.

Feezah has been with the Surrey Food Bank for over seven years, working her way up from her first position as a Client Service Assistant to her current role as Executive Director. Over the years Feezah has worked as a Program Manager, Director of External Relations and Associate Executive Director, giving her a great understanding of the Food Bank and the skills needed to work in the not-for-profit sector. Serving over 14,000 people per month, Feezah says that every day at the Food Bank is different, and it is extremely important for her to be adaptable to any situation.

Feezah’s favourite thing about working at the Surrey Food Bank is the clients. “They have a great attitude, and are very resilient” she says, commenting on their ability to face life’s biggest challenges with a smile on their faces.

Feezah’s ultimate goal is to help her clients beyond just supplying food for them. She is looking to take the program in a new direction, with her slogan “Not Just a Food Bank Anymore”.

While remaining true to the Food Bank’s core values, she hopes to expand and create a place where the Surrey Food Bank can partner up with other service providers and direct clients towards programs that can help get them out of poverty.

When asked what the Food Bank’s most needed items are, Feezah commented that many people may not know their number one most needed item is baby formula. Through their Tiny Bundles program the Food Bank serves over 200 babies per week, and they are always in need of formula, canned protein, and diapers. Other essential goods are healthy grains such as brown rice or whole wheat pasta, and canned vegetables.

The Surrey Food Bank is especially busy as the holiday season draws nearer, and donations are always welcome. If you would like to make a donation to the Surrey Food Bank visit them at 10732 City Parkway, or come by their booth at the Surrey Tree Lighting Festival on November 25th.

Christmas may feel far away for most people. However, for the Surrey Christmas Bureau, the holiday season is right around the corner. To start

the preparations for the upcoming season the Surrey Christmas Bureau welcomes a new Executive Director, Lisa Werring.

Lisa grew up in the field of charity work. From a young age Lisa remembers helping her father, the Executive Director of GoodWill in Edmonton, sorting buttons on his desk. Lisa would later go on to volunteer every summer of her youth at the GoodWill.

Since then Lisa has made a career for herself in the charitable and non-profit field. Lisa has dedicated her career to impacting the local community in a positive and uplifting way, and has loved every second of it.

One of Lisa’s favourite past times is to explore beautiful British Columbia’s landscape with her family. Lisa and her husband John have four children, three boys and one girl, along with two family dogs. They love to camp and fish throughout the summer. Their favourite place to go is by the Vedder River in Chilliwack.

As the new Surrey Christmas Bureau Executive Director, it is fitting that Lisa’s favourite time of year is Christmas. She loves all the lights, the sounds, and the joy that is found at Christmas time.

Lisa’s favourite movie of all time is the classic It’s a Wonderful Life. With a big smile on her face, Lisa mentioned that she could recite every line from the movie. Lisa also admitted that she’s known to curl up and watch It’s a Wonderful Life in the middle of July.

For Lisa the spirit of Christmas is all about community. That spirit is something she takes with her everywhere she goes, as the spirit of giving is something Lisa holds every day of the year.

Look for Lisa and the rest of the Surrey Christmas Bureau team around Downtown Surrey this winter. If you would like to donate to the Surrey Christmas Bureau, or Adopt-A-Family please visit www.christmasbureau.com

RYLEY, CHLOE & AUBREY’S

SPAGHETTI DINNER Little girls can do big things, and big things can help local charities like the Surrey Christmas Bureau! On November 18th Ryley and Chloe (and their latest team member Aubrey) will be hosting their 4th annual FunRaizer Spaghetti dinner to raise toys and cash for the Surrey Christmas Bureau.

The dinner will take place at Knight and Day Restaurant on King George Boulevard in Surrey from 5 pm - 7 pm. Tickets will be sold for $12 which includes a buffet style pasta dinner (vegetarian options available). We ask that all guests please bring a toy or cash donation to be given to the Surrey Christmas Bureau in addition to their ticket.

Ryley and Chloe first decided to hold a FunRaizer in 2014. Every year since she was 2 years old, Ryley and her Auntie Bonnie would buy a toy and take it to the Christmas Bureau for Ryley to put on the shelf. Ryley said she wanted to find a way to take more toys to the Christmas Bureau, and Bonnie gave her the idea to hold a fundraiser dinner. However, not any old fundraiser would do for Ryley and Chloe. The girls wanted to call it a “FunRaizer” instead of a “Fundraiser” because “toys are fun, and all kids should have fun at Christmas!” The first annual Spaghetti dinner was a success, and as it has progressed over the years. The girls have gotten more and more involved, hold meetings in the summer to plan the dinner and last year, emceed the event on their own. Every year after Christmas they hold a follow up meeting to decide what they would like to do next year, and they always say they want to raise more toys for the Christmas Bureau. A highlight for the girls is being able to bring the toys to the Christmas Bureau themselves, lining the shelves with all the gifts they have worked hard to collect.

In the past three years, Ryley and Chloe have raised over $4000 and 10 boxes of toys. Aubrey, who was an intern elf in 2016, is excited to help with this year’s annual Spaghetti Funraizer dinner. Please join us for some delicious food and exciting door prizes. Your generosity is sure to put a smile on many children’s faces.

If you’d like to purchase a ticket, please contact Bonnie or Tracey at the Downtown Surrey BIA office 604.580.2321.

Join us on December 3rd for a holiday celebration like no other, as the annual Big Rigs for Kids Lighted Truck Parade rolls back through Downtown Surrey.

For the last seven years, the Lighted Truck Parade has been a holiday tradition for many local families. Children and adults alike love to see the elaborate light displays that the truck drivers decorate their vehicles with, depicting different Christmas scenes from Frosty the Snowman to a giant Rudolph semi-truck. Stopping in front of City Centre Library, there are lots of chances to get your photo taken with one of the festive trucks.

There will be events and entertainment throughout the evening, beginning with the one and only Chris Hamilton at 4:30 pm. Warm up your voices and get ready to sing some of your favourite Christmas classics with the 2nd annual Christmas Carol sing-a-long from 5 pm - 6 pm.

In the spirit of the holidays, the Surrey Food Bank and the Surrey Christmas Bureau will be on site collecting donations from all the generous people in the Downtown Surrey community. The North Surrey Lions will also be on site selling some delicious snacks.

Celebrate the holiday season with family and friends right in the heart of Downtown Surrey by watching a parade of lighted trucks and singing along to your favourite Christmas classics.
