May 2017 The Network News 2017 ASSOCIATIONAL MISSIONS OFFERING “CROSS CULTURE” GOAL: $16,000 Local Baptist Associations across the country traditionally set aside a week in May for the churches within their networks to pray for the staff and work of the association. In addition, churches collect a special offering for specific projects within the association. This year, the week of May 21-28 has been set aside. We ask your church to pray, and to consider contributing to the offering. We have bulletin inserts, posters, and offering envelopes available for promoting the offering. Some churches choose to collect the offering at another time. This is fine. You may contribute at any time during the year. Here is how we propose to use these funds this year: Strengthening Existing Churches $6,000 Strong healthy churches are needed to advance God’s Kingdom in our area. These are churches that are growing by engaging their communities with the gospel. These funds help our churches provide Sports Camps and other ministries inside and outside of the walls of the church. Catalyzing New Work $1,000 We are committed to supporting new church plants, as well as multi-sites and new ministries within existing churches. These funds provide small start-up grants for church plants and new work, as well as scholarships for training leaders for these new works. Developing Leaders $5,000 Our staff is committed to walking alongside of our churches in the training, equipping, and developing of leaders. Among the ways these funds are used are: scholarships for training events, internships for young leaders, and the purchase of resources to help people develop their leadership potential. Missions and Ministry $4,000 Missions are the glue that hold our network together. We all agree on the importance of fulfilling the Great Commission. These funds help with such things as missional projects through the Baptist Collegiate Ministries at local universities; and to help people from our churches go on mission trips around the world.

VISION NIGHT RECAP We had a great meeting at Crossroads Community Church on April 30th. We added Search Point Bible Fellowship (a church plant), and Antioch Baptist Church into membership, and Shalom Baptist Church into Watchcare. We are excited that God keeps sending like-minded churches to become part of our growing network. We also heard two video testimonies of people from our churches who went on their first mission trip last year, thanks in part to support from the association. We honored the memory of Harald Aadahl who passed away recently, and presented his family with a love offering given by churches as well as by the association. We also surprised Linda Reynolds by honoring her dedicated service with a love offering from our churches. People also contributed $327 to kick off our Associational Missions Offering. The music was led by the Praise Team from Crossroads. And we had brief messages from Charles, Melanie, and Chuck. It was a very full service! Following the service, we had a Missions Fair with displays from many of our churches and a few select organizations within our community. This was a great time of networking and partnering for future ministry. It is always good to see what our churches are doing for the Kingdom.

THANK YOU FROM LINDA!

What a surprise it was to receive the generous love offering on Sunday night at the PBA Vision Night. It is hard to believe it’s been 6 years. I can’t think of anywhere I would rather be. It is such an honor to be able to serve the PBA, and all the churches with the great things God is leading us to do. I hope to be around for many more years. Again, Thank you, Linda

SPOTLIGHT ON CHURCHES!

The monthly Spotlight on Churches offers the opportunity for our PBA Family to get an update look at churches in the Network, and the wonderful ministries they are involved in that enhance relational ministry in the community. Each month we will be spotlighting 2 churches in the PBA Network of churches.

PARKVIEW BAPTIST CHURCH Even though the lot on the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Hilton Boulevard wasn’t purchased until 1943, the body of believers known as Parkview Baptist Church has been worshipping in the Parkview and Briarfield neighborhoods since December of 1941. Originally founded as one of the Baptist Ministerial Association church plants by Orcutt Avenue Baptist Church, Parkview rose out of a shipyard community that grew through the years of the second World War. The first two years saw the congregation meeting at the Old Dominion Skating Rink until a building was erected and dedicated on March 7, 1943. As the neighborhood grew, so did the church. Ministering mostly to the blue-collar, shipyard workers of the neighborhood, Parkview has seen great change over its 75 years. From the start, it has been a church that strived to reach up to Lord, in to its members, and out to the surrounding community. Through ministries and partnerships such as the Women’s Missionary Union, Vacation Bible School, PORT, the Peninsula Rescue Mission, and countless others, Parkview has loved the community around it. Though the option to move uptown was discussed over the years, Parkview has always felt led to remain in this transitional community. Now, at 75 years old, Parkview is under the current leadership of Rev. Rusty Beck. Rusty’s relationship with the Lord and leadership skills are a direct product of growing up in this neighborhood and interaction with Parkview Baptist Church. As a child, he was actively involved in the Boys’ Club, which was once directly across Hilton Boulevard from the church. As a young father, he became a deacon in the church and was later called to the position of Youth Minister. In this capacity, Rusty was mentored by Rev. Larry Biermann who saw leadership potential in him. After Rev. Biermann’s 2008 retirement, the church called Rusty to be the Senior Pastor. Under his leadership, the church has seen lots of interesting growth. There is more unity in Parkview after a 2014 decision to combine our contemporary and traditional services into one. The new service, which meets every Sunday at 10:00 a.m., is a constant exercise in compromise and diversity. There are elements of traditional worship as well as new and exciting styles. The church family is closer because of it. Another interesting situation at Parkview is that fact that there are now two congregations meeting in one building. Several years ago, Parkview felt called to open its doors to Hampton Roads Fellowship, a church plant of the North American Mission Board. Hampton Roads Fellowship, under the direction of Pastor Miguel Davilla, is a young church with an exciting future. They have been an extremely positive addition to the Parkview Family, and the experiment of two churches sharing one building has been beneficial to both congregations.

SPOTLIGHT CONTINUED: As Parkview looks toward the future, we hope to continue doing God’s work in this neighborhood. It is our prayer that we continue to use our resources to reach up, in, and out.

MOUNT CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH On April 2, 2017, Mount Calvary Baptist Church was blessed to celebrate its 97th Church Anniversary. God has truly blessed this Branch of Zion through our years of engaging the East End Community of Newport News through sharing and caring by showing the Love of God in all that we do. We proudly proclaim to the community that "we are in the Kingdom Building business and you don't have to dress-up just show-up and watch what God does". This coincides with our church motto which is “Each One Reach One.” 1st John 4:20 says, “for he that loveth not his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?” So, let us not just say we love, but show that we love. Mount Calvary actively reaches out to the neighboring faith community and engages in various activities to serve the people through connective Vacation Bible Schools, Jobs For Life, Prayer walks and other community engagement activities that help build relationships. We may not have the great numbers of some but we believe, that which God has given us we must effectively utilize to His glory. Since we have joined with the Peninsula Baptist Association we have found a renewed joy and sense of purpose in joining with other saints who are intentional about Kingdom Building by working together and sharing the gifts we all possess. Pastor Michael Silver has been the shepherd of Mount Calvary for 13 years. He and his wife Jewel have one daughter, 2 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. They truly love their family at home and in the broader community. Those who know Pastor Silver, know that he is always repeating his favorite "Let's Give God All the Glory".
