Dear Parents and Carers,

Yet another exciting week of learning and fun was enjoyed by all on Campus. Yesterday afternoon we bade farewell to the Shanghai teachers with an “original production of Cinderella” performed by the staff to a packed and appreciative audience, but not before hosting over 200 Teachers and Headteachers who observed live maths lessons and attended seminars. CHINESE NEW YEAR LUNCH - next Thursday, Kevin will be offering a Special Lunch Menu to celebrate Chinese New Year. This will include: Special Chicken Chow Mein/Sweet and Sour Quorn with Noodles, Five Spice Carrots/Mango Smoothie. If your child is interested please see Ms White at the front desk.

NETLEY AWARDED PRIMARY SCIENCE QUALITY MARK - Gaining a Primary Science Quality Mark is a significant achievement for a school. It shows that the profile and quality of science teaching and learning in the school is very high and that children are engaging with great science both in and outside the classroom. Netley recently received the PSQM Silver Award! The certificate is proudly displayed in the foyer. Well done to our teaching staff and all our pupils for their work towards achieving this.

HOMEWORK TEA PARTY - Last Friday, we celebrated last term's best homework across the school at the Elexon offices in Regent's Place. A huge well done once again to: Samuel (1EH), Ben (1VB), Marwa (2HC), Jannah (2NB), Jinan (3RE), Mursalin (3KW), Zak (4PK), Fahim (4TS), Bilal (5KA), Ibrahim (5DO), Frankline (6MA) and En (6RC) for their excellent work. It was really clear why the-se children were chosen. Something they all had in common was help from someone at home and they had a lot of fun doing it! It is so important that parents and carers show their children the value of taking pride in their work. When your child is given a project to do, why not take the opportunity to spend time making it together? Many thanks to all the parents, carers and family members who came along and of course Elexon who provided the room and refreshments.

NEXT JUMP: WORKING WITH YEAR 5 - Year 5s have now completed one session of each strand of learning with Next Jump. The strands are health, business and engineering. We have started to design our own product, we know all of our major muscle groups and we have started to think about how coding is used to create programs used in the business world. We are looking forward to our next business session next week!

THANK YOU SHANGHAI TEACHERS! - We had a fantastic week learning about how maths is taught in Shanghai schools. 2NB have been taught by Miss Sun and learnt that when you add and subtract numbers, it is easier to make 10 rather than do the whole thing together.

For example 7 + 5 = ? split the 5 into 3 and 2, then 7 + 3 (= 10) and add the 2 to make 12!

4TS have been learning about Fractions with Miss Liu. They have learnt that fractions are just parts of the whole.

We had over 200 Teachers, Headteachers and even people from the Department for Educa-tion visit the school to observe the teaching of lessons. All the visitors thought Netley was an engaging, beautiful school. They were impressed at how dedicated we are to improve Maths and lots want to come back again to learn more - which is great!

The Chinese teachers thought our children were kind, considerate and keen to learn and join in. They loved teaching 2NB and 4TS and cried when the time came to leave! They did think there was an area we could improve. They were shocked at how slow the children were at remembering their times tables and addition facts. They thought this really slowed the lessons down and stopped the children learning.

They also said that in China it is the job of the parents to help their children learn their times tables so the teachers can teach the more difficult work. This is something we will work on with your support. Gareth Morris (Assistant Head)

SIGN OF THE WEEK

EYFS - Reception children had their first workshop with

the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Our favourite song was the elevator song. The brass

instruments were wonderful to listen and move to.

WOODLANDS - Every other week we walk to Morning ton Crescent library to practice our reading skills and for enjoyment! Maple class went this week; Leena followed the words of the book with her finger and labelled objects in the pictures. Mohammed spent time looking at each book cover before deciding which book he anted to read. We love reading!!

YEAR 1 - We have been learning about Traditional Tales. We read the tale of ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We wrote WHERE, WHAT, HOW, WHY, WHEN questions to the Wolf. He came for a visit and we asked him the questions we had written!

YEAR 2 - Last term, as part of our work towards The Netley Exhibi-tion, we wrote our own letters to the famous explorer Ellen MacAr-thur. Our whole school big ques-tion is ‘Who Do I Want To Be?’ and we wanted to find out more about Ellen’s experiences. Ms MacArthur actually found the time to reply to our letters and has sent a special message to Year 2 and everyone at Netley… “GO FOR IT!”

YEAR 3 - This week we have been learning all about the food groups we need to stay healthy. We are making posters so everyone can see us respecting our right to be healthy! We're also experts on multiplication now - come and test us !

YEAR 4 - We have started to make our own videos in science this week! This week we began by doing some research on the digestive system and next week we will be creating models to use in our videos. We will then record ourselves explaining how we digest the food we eat!

YEAR 5 - in 5KA we started using clay

with Mrs Reese. We're creating our

own aliens to make an exciting,

futuristic and creative display! In

5DO we have been using our

knowledge of the solar system and

our compass skills to create imagi-

nary galaxies. We've been designing

and creating, with ‘Unchained Melo-

dy’ in the background, and we can’t

wait to move on to the next step!

YEAR 6 - This week in Maths we have been using scale

factors to make shapes bigger and smaller. We have

started to look at different measurements and how to

convert them. In English we’ve been learning more

about relative clauses,

subordinating conjunc-

tions and prepositional

phrases! We have

been using all these to

help with our writing.
