Regional Reflections

Blessed to Be in Nebraska

Greetings as we begin 2018 together. I am honored to serve, for what

will likely be, a short-term ministry. The Regional Minister Search Committee

will be hard at work in the new year concluding the work of calling a new

called Regional Minister.

Last Sunday my pastor Erin Dickey at Riverside Avenue Christian

Church in Jacksonville, FL offered a prayer of blessing for my me and my

wife as we begin this new venture. The blessing reminded me that I am part

of more than one congregation and more than a region, and more than

one tradition of the church. We are all called to serve the whole church.

I grew up in the Ohio Region, spent a summer on the camp staff of

the Michigan Region, went to school in the West Virginia Region and The

North-East Region, then served congregation in the Pennsylvania, Indiana

and Florida Regions. In retirement I have served interims in The Great Rocky

Mountain and North Carolina Regions.

In each place I was blessed to see faithful Disciple ministry as

congregations, laity, and pastors sought to live the Disciple way proclaim-

ing: Our Creed is Christ, (that is we find in Jesus a way of God for the world,

Our Book’s The Bible, (that is in scripture we discern together the way of

Christ) Our Law is Love, (that is when we disagree over scripture our

differences will be overcome by love) and thereby our Aim is Unity (or as we

say it today: We are a movement for wholeness in a broken world).

I hope you will invite me to be with you as congregations, pastors,

and ministries that I might be blessed by the Disciple ministry in the

Nebraska Region.

Rev. Richard Hull,

Interim Regional Minister

REGIONAL MINISTER SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE:

-Report—December 20, 2017-

The Regional Minister Search Committee was formed at the

November 10, 2016 Regional Board Meeting and since the first com-

mittee meeting on February 7, 2017, we have met regularly through-

out this year. It is hard to imagine in this short span of time we have

completed many of the steps outlined in the Manual for Regional

Minister Search Committees. The manual was developed by the Of-

fice of the General Minister and President and the College of Re-

gional Ministers in 2013.

Working with our Regional Minister Search Consultant, Bill

Spangler-Dunning, we;

established our process and a timeline

created and conducted a self-study in the form of Listening Sessions with 34

DOC churches throughout the Region

created the Regional Profile and Position Description, including a You-Tube

Video to highlight the NE Region

obtained the approval of our Consultant and the General Minister and Presi

dent, and the NE Region Board of the Profile and Position Description

posted the position on September 21, with a closing date of November 15th

created questions for candidates for written response to accompany their

application

reviewed candidate materials for six applicant on December 18th

will begin the interview process, scheduled to commence on January 3rd

We wish to thank our Committee Members, Phyllis Dunlop, Dar-

yl Lauber, Jay Mitchell and Anne Pope. This process has required a

significant time commitment on their part; we gratefully

acknowledge their dedication to the process and sincere desire to

recruit the best possible candidate for our new Called Regional Min-

ister.

Respectfully,

Gayle Gengenbach and Eileen Kunz, Co-Chairs

YOMC Happy New Year!!! 2018 is going to be awesome!!!!!

“For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do

you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will cre-

ate rivers in the dry wasteland.” Isaiah 43:19 NLT

My calendar is quickly filling up for times to come and share about

Kamp Kaleo in church services or Youth/Children Nights. There are many more

churches than there are days for me to visit them, so members of the YOMC

committee (Youth & Outdoor Ministries Committee) will also be visiting

churches. Please contact me ASAP to reserve your spot! You taking a minute

to contact me will help me tremendously and allow you to get scheduled

quicker and have a better chance of getting the date of your choosing.

Spring Retreat News! We are excited to be teaming up with Humboldt

Christian Church with their annual “Lock in” to the school gymnasium! This is so

much fun! There is also wonderful learning that happens at this event! Contact

me to get on a list to be notified immediately with more info and be watching

for registration forms and more details, as soon as I confirm with Pastor How-

ard this week I will make that info available to you all.

Vital Worship Grants Program 2018 This program is made possible through the generous support of Lilly Endowment Inc.

→CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE FULL BROCHURE!←

Welcome!

The Vital Worship Grants Program at the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship seeks to

foster vital worship in congregations, parishes, and other worshiping communities in

North America. This grants program is especially focused on projects that connect

public worship to Intergenerational faith formation and Christian discipleship, a theme

that can unfold in many facets of worship from Bible reading to preaching, public

prayer, baptism, the Lord’s Supper, congregational song, visual arts, storytelling, and

more. We encourage grant proposals developed through a collaborative process from

emerging and established churches; seminaries, colleges, and schools; hospitals,

nursing homes and other organizations.

Through the Vital Worship Grants Program, hundreds of worshiping communities

throughout North America have engaged in a yearlong process of focusing on

worship. Projects funded have included (but are not limited to)—

• an in-depth study of the theology of worship in relation to current and emerging practices

• reflection and study of baptism or the Lord’s Supper and ways in which the sacraments connect with

the life of the community

• exploration of the Psalms and the way they shape words and music in worship

• collaboration of pastors and lay leaders in planning worship that carefully integrates the sermon with

other components of the service or aspects of congregational life

• a yearlong process that encourages the unique gifts of people of all ages to be used in planning and

leading worship

You are invited to join this exciting process by submitting a proposal

for a Vital Worship Grant.

Evangelism is the preaching or sharing of the good news of Jesus Christ

Leading the way on the road to congregational transformation

Resources to help your congregation spread the message.

What Disciples Believe

Marks of a vital, healthy church

Which evangelism tool is right for your congregation?

The evangelism resources that you find on this Web site are tools for your use. Each

has the potential to be used well to accomplish the work of sharing the gospel. However, not

every situation requires the same tool.

No one tool or resource will fit every congregation. The challenge with evangelism

tools is to choose them well to match the needs and culture or environment of each church.

It is the job of church leaders, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to assess which resources

will work most effectively in their congregation.

Just as important as the fit of the specific programs and resources selected, is the

motivation behind their use. Thus, we need to discern our own answers to these questions:

• Why do we do evangelism?

• Why do we share our faith?

• Why do invite people to church?

• Why do we give to mission?

You are unique as a congregation. Use the tools that best fit your ministry. But remem-

ber that you share a common call with brothers and sisters in Christ: to invite others to experi-

ence the promise and the hope that God has provided to all through Jesus Christ. May you

and your congregation be motivated by the good news at work in you, as you use these

tools to honor God through the sharing of Jesus Christ with others.

For more evangelism resources and weekly lectionary reflections, visit our partners

at www.evangelismconnections.org. Evangelism Connections is an ecumenical partnership

of mainline denominations, including the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
