As we begin a new academic year at Emporia State University in a time which promises some economic challenges for the state of Kansas, I am so thankful for the support we receive from our donors. We begin each academic year with

a convocation for freshmen and their parents. At this year’s convocation, I spoke about our expectations of the students. As I spoke, I reflected on your expectations of ESU. I believe you want ESU to provide an excellent education for our students. I believe you want us to care deeply about the success of our students and our graduates. On both of these counts I can promise you that we deliver.

This has been an excellent year for the ESU Foundation. Our ability to deliver on these promises is enhanced by the greater opportunities provided to our students, our faculty, and our staff as a result of your investments in ESU. Your support is critical to our success as the ESU community moves forward to finalize our Strategic Plan this year (you can view the draft at www.emporia.edu/strategicplanning.) If you hear the sounds of celebration coming from the ESU campus, consider it aimed at you! Why? It’s in the numbers: in the 2008 fiscal year ending June 30, total fundraising activity at the ESU

Foundation – including cash gifts, pledges and deferred gifts – was $6.59 million, up from the previous year’s $6.37 million. The FY08 cash gifts and pledges jumped to $4.886 million, up 37 percent from $3.557 million in FY07. Gifts of all sizes are fulfilling the Foundation’s mission to support Emporia State University. We’re especially pleased to recognize, for the first time in Honor Roll of Donors, those who have made gifts each year (consecutively) for more than 20 years (see page 32). Donald D. Perry Art Scholarship The Donald D. Perry Art Scholarship Fund, a memorial to the late Donald Perry, ESU professor emeritus and former art department chair, was created by his wife Sharon and his sons, Mark and Brett Perry in support of upperclassmen majoring in the visual arts.

Las Casitas Association Community Scholarship The Las Casitas Association Community Foundation established this fund to provide scholarships for full-time students with a 2.8 minimum GPA who are graduates of Emporia High School.

Dr. David Travis (BSE 1950, MS 1951) was head of the Foreign Language Department at ESU for eighteen years and was a professor for thirty-four years at ESU. The scholarship will be awarded to a student with a GPA of 3.5 or above who is majoring in music or foreign language.

The scholarship will be awarded to a student majoring in education.

Michael A. Coughenour Memorial Scholarship Established by Ruth Mattingly (BSE 1967), widow of Michael A. Coughenour. Michael was pursuing a master’s degree at ESU when he was killed in an automobile accident in 1967 while commuting from Topeka to Emporia State University. The scholarship will be awarded to a graduate student majoring in psychology with an emphasis in mental health counseling.

Ronald Loren Keith Scholarship Established through an estate gift in memory of Ron Keith, an associate professor of physics at Emporia State University, who lost his battle with cancer in late 2007. The scholarship is for juniors and seniors seeking a bachelor of science degree with a desire to teach physics.

Donna Allen Piano Fund Donna Allen was owner of Donna Allen Keyboard Center of Topeka, Kan. Before her death she was a good friend and supporter of the ESU Department of Music. Donna created a charitable remainder trust through her estate to establish the fund. It will provide funding for the purchase, maintenance and upkeep of pianos and development of, and/or enhancements to, piano performance and practice facilities in the music department.

Black and Gold Society Fund Established for the Black & Gold Society, a presidential membership organization designed for those who care deeply about the success of ESU. Membership is awarded to those who annually donate $1,500 or more specifically to the society fund. Half of the funds will support the Black and Gold Scholars Program and half will annually support at least one or more university priorities identified by the President of ESU.

David W. Kasitz Art Department Fund Established by Kasitz (BSE 1975) to help in the development of an engraving arts degree program at ESU and to provide further funding for the Art Department and its students.

Kasitz Engraving Arts Scholarship Scholarship was established by David Kasitz (BSE 1975) and will provide a $500 award each year for the next few years. The recipient will be a worthy and deserving student enrolled at ESU who is a full-time student, studying engraving arts with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Brianna Mundy Memorial ScholarshipThe Brianna Mundy Memorial Scholarship was established by Vivian Mundy in honor of her daughter Brianna, a freshman at ESU who majored in art. Recognizing Brianna’s zest for life and love for art, Vivian hopes to encourage the educational dreams of other ESU students. The scholarship is for a full-time student majoring in art with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Beau Arndt “Love for the Outdoors” Scholarship This fund was established to ensure that the memory of Beau Arndt is kept alive. The scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student with a GPA between 2.5 and 3.5 and majoring in biology or earth science who graduated from Northern Heights High School.

In the fertile minds of Emporia State University students, the future is

blooming. This is what education does, when the soil is enriched

by your support. Like water in the wetlands, you are the

reservoir that nourishes student success.

Like waterin the wetlands

The land is alive.Moving and breathing and buzzing with fauna. The flora growing rapidly with ever-ready water.

Dragonflies of every shade, hornets ready to protect their nest.The idea of biological diversity becomes tangible in the Neva Marsh and the Dunlap Bottoms, two

wetlands parcels donated anonymously to Emporia State University in 2008. The 52-acre Neva Marsh west of Cottonwood Falls, and the 128-acre Dunlap Bottoms tract in southeastern Morris County are the latest editions to ESU’s collection of Natural Areas. For ESU students and faculty, these new sites are a bountiful blessing.

“I was very impressed by what I saw,” said Dr. William Jensen, an assistant professor who directs ESU’s Natural Areas for the department of biological sciences; on the drive to Neva Marsh, he noted the quality of the marsh habitat and its numerous birds. As if to emphasize his point, as the car rolled to a stop upon arrival, Jensen quickly spotted the wildlife: “There’s a great blue heron. There are a couple of great egrets.” As the dry land dipped toward the standing water, he pointed out the prairie crayfish burrows ready to turn an ankle underfoot, and the yellow-breasted dickcissel birds, one of his research interests.

Migratory birds pass through the area in great numbers. Amphibians thrive, because wetlands appear to have few fish that feed on them, Jensen said. And native vegetation has reclaimed its mark on the former farmland, thanks to plantings subsidized through the U.S.D.A. Wetlands Reserve Program, the Neva Marsh’s low topographic position, and the freshwater that drops down from the Flint Hills south of it.

The Nature of GivingDonor gives 180 acres of wetlands to ESU

All of this contributes to perfect locales, at both sites, for long-term study of natural ecosystems – which is precisely what the donor had in mind. The family owned the land for many years, and about a decade ago, added perpetual easements through the federal Wetlands Reserve Program to take it out of crop production, meaning that the land will always be reserved in its natural state. The federal status made the sites particularly appealing to the ESU biology department.

“It’s the best thing for the land,” the donor said. “This land, it had been traditionally a poor crop land. It wasn’t cattle land.” Now it can benefit the educational system, and someday the research could yield breakthroughs that benefit humanity. “Who knows? You don’t know. But the opportunity is there,” the donor said of the possible research. “The potential of that land has gone up ten-fold by the educational use of it. It’s going to touch many lives down the road.

“It’s set up as a good classroom for seeing what the ecosystem was like 150 or 200 years ago,” the donor said, “as a control basis for studying what’s happening to other land in the area. It makes a tremendous learning platform. Books aren’t always the best. It’s hands-on learning.”

The donor and family grew up in Emporia, getting to know ESU’s professors and students well enough to view the university as an ideal recipient.

“I feel really good about it,” the donor said. “Education is one thing that you can pass on from generation to generation. That’s a gift that gives directly and indirectly. It becomes a very large pyramid of people that benefit. That in itself is very rewarding, to know that you’ve facilitated such an action.”

The land is indeed alive, and will be, from generation to generation.

KSTC class of 1957 establishes scholarship for education majors

Half a century ago, a tight-knit group of Kansas State Teachers College alumni left the college. Last fall, the Class of 1957 returned to Emporia State University for their 50-year class reunion at Homecoming.

A few things might have changed – like the university’s name, or, gasp, the age of the class – but a strong passion for their alma mater has remained the same. The reunion turnout was 100-plus, or about a third of the 1957 graduates, and they came bearing gifts: the creation of an endowed scholarship for education majors.

Robert Chatham (BSE 1957, MS 1962) said the core group decided to pursue a scholarship at the reunion’s initial planning meeting. Members of the class were retired with grown children, and so the opportunity to give made perfect sense. “It’s a time in life that you can give back to your college,” Chatham said. “We all feel that we got a wonderful education, so it’s a way to pay back a little bit.”

The class hopes that future 50-year reunion classes, returning each year for Homecoming, will follow suit. “The class of 1957 challenges future classes to make this a tradition,” Chatham said.

The impact of a generous gift from the late Donna Allen of Topeka will ring throughout the Emporia State University music department for years to come. Allen, who owned and operated the Donna Allen Keyboard Center at 17th and Fairlawn in Topeka, passed away in December 2006. Honoring a strong relationship with the ESU music department, Allen established a charitable remainder unitrust from the sale of a home in Topeka, leaving nearly $80,000 to provide pianos and piano equipment for ESU.

The gift will provide acoustic pianos for student practice rooms and faculty studios; a grand piano for the instrumental rehearsal room; and humidity controls to preserve the instruments’ wood and tuning. It also benefits students and faculty across the department, because many students are accompanied on their instruments by the piano, said Marie Miller, chair of the music department.

“That’s the beauty of the whole gift,” Miller said. “It’s servicing the entire department, not just the piano area. Donna strongly believed in the entire program – that’s what makes the gift so special for us.”

Miller developed a strong friendship with Allen dating back to 1993, when Miller first explored piano retailers in the state. “She was the one that really responded and took an interest in our program,” Miller said. “She was very supportive of what we were doing in music here, and she didn’t hesitate to tell anyone that.”

In a sense, Allen’s gift completes the late 1990s renovation of Beach Music Hall. The gift fulfills a goal of the renovation – to build up the number of pianos for studios and practice rooms, Miller said. “This is what we wanted to do, but we didn’t have the funding at that time.”

The Emporia Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) Scholarship has been established by the organization of

the same name to support their belief in the importance of higher education. The endowed fund at the ESU Foundation will provide scholarships to

full-time ESU students with a minimum 3.0 grade point average, preferring residents of Lyon, Chase, Greenwood, Osage, Morris or Coffey counties.

In the 30-year history of the Emporia chapter, ABWA members have provided over $50,000 in scholarships to area women. The organization will continue its fundraising efforts to fully endow the scholarship over the next five years. “This is the biggest project we’re working on over the next five years,” said Sandy Wickham, president of the Emporia ABWA chapter. “We decided that because our group’s numbers have declined over the years, we wanted to create a scholarship fund that would endure… and become an ongoing legacy to honor the work of our members.”

Business women’s group creates scholarship

Beau Arndt, the avid hunter, outdoorsman and Emporia State University freshman who was killed while hunting in December 2007, has been honored with a scholarship at ESU. The Beau Arndt “Love for the Outdoors” Scholarship Fund was recently established by Hunt for Hunger (H4H), a local organization dedicated to providing food to those in need, and Beau’s parents, Bob and Christine Arndt of Americus. The scholarship will support students majoring in biology or earth science with GPAs between 2.5 and 3.5 who are graduates of Northern Heights High School or a high school in Lyon County. Beau loved to help younger children and his peers discover the outdoors, including baseball, animals, hunting and fishing. He would ride his horse for hours, studying wildlife and learning about nature. His passion for the outdoors was something he always shared with others – with family, friends and those who were in need. For the Hunt for Hunger group, Beau’s story struck a chord, says Chuck Gardner, and the organization made a commitment to raise money for the scholarship. “We truly believe it could’ve happened to any one of us,” Gardner said of Beau’s tragic death. “He was a young man who grew up just like we did. We are Beau. Everyone in our group is just like Beau.” Founded by Lyon County outdoorsmen, H4H brings together hunters, outdoors people, businesses and organizations to provide help to the needy and hungry. The group’s ideals perfectly match the way Beau lived his life. “How he lived and his values are the same ideals of the Hunt for Hunger group – wanting to do things for others,” Bob Arndt said. “It seemed like the perfect fit. If they can raise money in Beau’s name and help someone else fulfill their dreams, then that’s a great thing. Beau would want that.”

Ask your employer about matching gifts! The ESU Foundation is a charitable organization that exists to support the mission of Emporia State University, and our educational mission qualifies for most employers’ matching gift programs.

For Mike and Lori (Goertz) Hubert, attending Emporia State University was a holistic experience. They met through the Xi Phi leadership organization and interacted because of their Greek involvement, and they credit the ESU experience with launching them into their careers in communications and accounting. Now, the Huberts have established two scholarships – the Michael James Hubert Family Scholarship for communication majors in the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity, and the Lori Lyn Goertz Hubert Family Scholarship for business majors in the Chi Omega sorority.

Mike and Lori’s gifts were tailored to recognize continuing students who have demonstrated academic diligence and campus involvement and “to be a reflection of who we are and who we’ve become,” said Mike. The couple can identify with the students who will benefit from their gift. “It’s critical for students to have the financial resources to be successful – we know it was for us.”

In 1991, Lori earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting and Mike earned his in communication and public affairs. Mike now works for Pfizer, and with the help of Pfizer’s matching gift program, the gifts were even more manageable. “I’m proud to work where I work,” said Mike. “They don’t have to do this.”

A habit of consistent giving to Emporia State University scholarships already had Russ and Myra Jones of Emporia thinking about their future giving. When they met with John Griffin, the estate planner retained by the ESU Foundation to work with the university’s alumni and friends, they realized they wanted to give now, too. With a gift of appreciated stock, they created the Russell and Myra Jones Scholarship Fund.

The scholarship fund is reserved for juniors and seniors from the state of Kansas who carry GPAs between 2.75 and 3.5, purposefully reaching the academically midrange students. “A lot of those kids are such good people, and can contribute so much,” Myra says.

Myra attended ESU, as did the three Jones children. In 1967, Russ and Myra started Jones Heating and Air Conditioning in Emporia and have seen it grow with the support of customers employed by or educated at ESU. The Joneses are excited to see the results of their gift years from now, as future alumni recognize the support they received and consider giving back to ESU.

“It benefits us all,” Russ says. “It’s that old saying: ‘You can’t take it with you.’ Give it early and…” “Enjoy it,” Myra interjects. “You’ll find it true that the more you give, the more you have.”

The Black & Gold SocietyThe Black & Gold Society is a presidential

membership organization designed for those who care deeply about the success of Emporia State University. Membership is gained by giving a $1,500 annual gift specifically to the society. Members interact closely with the ESU president, driving the creation of signature programs and groundbreaking initiatives.

The inaugural members of the society gathered in May 2008, where the Black and Gold Society initiatives were unveiled. Funding will support the internationalization of ESU by providing funds for students to study abroad, and it will also support the Black and Gold Scholars Program, offering scholarships based on leadership qualities and academic success.

Measured progressOver the years, the ESU Foundation has grown alongside the university. The market value of the Foundation’s net assets stood at $71.06 million at the end of fiscal year 2008, marking a decade of steady progress despite market downturns.

We have been working diligently at the ESU Foundation and to move a number of initiatives forward. We seek to meet the needs of ESU, wherever they are – from the beginning stages of fundraising for the Memorial Union renovation project, to team-building activities where we celebrate our success, to community-driven fundraising like the annual Blaufuss Memorial Run/Walk.

To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes they are asked to support, the Emporia State University Foundation declares that all donors have these rights:

The text of this statement in its entirety was developed by the American Association of Fund-Raising Counsel (AAFRC), Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), and the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), and adopted in November 1993.

ITo be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the

organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.

VITo be assured that information about their donations

is handled with respect and with confidentialityto the extent provided by law.

IIITo have access to the organization’s

most recent financial statements.

VIIITo be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers,

employees of the organization or hired solicitors.
