We are on a mission to raise more than £2000 for a memorial stone to be placed overlooking the sea near Ross Castle, Cleethorpes. It would mean such a great deal to all members and their families if we

could get a memorial stone erected. A lot of members are getting older and I am very much on my own doing this, as I am the youngest. We have lost a tremendous amount of members in recent years. During World War II, the RAF Air Sea Rescue were the saviours of over 13,000 aircrew. In addition, it rescued hundreds of victims from ships that had been struck by mines or sunk by torpedo attacks. The service operated wherever the RAF was based and likely to be flying over the sea. It’s origins lay in 1918, when the RAF was created, and the Marine Craft Section (MCS) was formed. It’s primary role was to assist the Seaplanes in flying, rather than rescue. However, between September 1939 and February 1941, many pilots either ditching their aircraft or bailing out over water died due to drowning or hypothermia. A rescue service was needed. Thus, after the RAF’s initial experience of air warfare during WWII the MCS became the RAF Air Sea Rescue service on 6th February 1941. One of these bases was 22ASR/Royal Dock basin, Grimsby, which stayed operational until 1946 when it moved to 1110MCU RAF Station Immingham Dock. That stayed operational until late 1958 and closed that year. By the mid 1950’s, the RAF had helicopters, which meant that the ASR role of the Marine Branch was less important. Nonetheless, the RAF bases that were home to the Marine Branch, as with other stations worldwide, did not close until January 1986. We are not looking for a lot of money, just enough to say thank you to these men. If you would like to donate to the ASR Memorial Fund, you can send it to Mr CT Smith, (ex ASR), 89 Seaford Road, Cleethorpes, DN35 0NE or via the RAF Association Club, 5 Alexandra Road, Cleethorpes, DN35 8LQ. If you would like any further information, you can ring me on 01472 504778. I will keep you informed of developments as they progress. Thank you, Trevor Smith. Wings Wings collection dates are at the end of this newsletter in Forthcoming Events. All the Wings merchandise – wristbands, Wings teddies, mugs, aeroplane lapel badges, highly sought after RAF Association rubber ducks etc - is available from behind the bar at the Club, along with our new Wings Appeal pens. We also have some tabard style aprons in pale blue with the Wings logo on for sale at £5 each. Please contact Donna if you’re interested in those. Upstairs, we have some RAF and military books for sale or for you to borrow, for a small donation to Wings. Please ask when you’re in the club. As usual, we are always needing help with the Street collections in Grimsby and Cleethorpes, so even if you can only spare half an hour on one of those days, it would really help! If you think you might like to be more involved in Wings in any way, please get in touch with me and we’ll be only too pleased to have you in the Team! Contact me on 01472 596745, 07801440862 or email [email protected]. Thank you.

Welfare Services Do you need help? The RAFA is there to help serving and ex-serving RAF personnel and their dependants, providing friendship, advice and support, respite care, general welfare and signposting. Bill, Andrea, and Trish, our Welfare reps, have been extremely busy over the last few months with lots of local cases. Andrea is writing a report for the newsletter to go in next month’s newsletter. Contact details for our Branch welfare reps are at the end of the newsletter. One Day in the Life of a Wings collector by Tony Walker We are a small, but very dedicated, group (slaves!) who have found our vocation! That is street collecting for the RAF Association Wings Appeal. I feel that I must first introduce you to our group. Firstly, we have Alex, who we endearingly refer to as ‘The Bank of Wings’ due to his ability to attract most of the generous donors who we meet. He is also very territorial and if you stand collecting close to him, you’re on a hiding to nothing as people often ignore the good looking younger man and prefer to donate to the rugged-looking old veteran who must have surely (and indeed, did!) see a lot of action. Often in the beating heart of Cleethorpes, which is St Peter’s Avenue, I glance around from my spot to see Alex engaged in eager conversation, exchanging stories with the public. They in turn go away feeling much richer in experience for those conversations with him, as our Alex has quite a wealth of facts and information which he is always ready to share with anyone who will listen. His only fault is that he is so keen to collect that it takes a lot of persuasion to coax him away from his post for a break! Now we come to Joan, or Auntie Wainwright as she is affectionately known (for those of you who follow Last of the Summer Wine). Our Joan is a wonderful, warm, happy lady who is always up for a laugh and a joke (although her daughter Diane sometimes doubts her mum mixing with us is a good idea!) Joan can sell Wings merchandise even better than the real Auntie Wainwright with her, “I’m sure a nice man like you would like to buy all four...!” Steve thinks she is capable of selling sand to the Arabs and she is a wonderful addition to our little group. Next, we have Steve. A tall, imposing man who stands head and shoulders above us and the perfect beacon for all the, shall we say more colourful characters, of the local area! They seem to home in on Steve like Exocet missiles, which is good for the rest of us. There are those who wish to convert him and those who compliment him on his attire and while this is going on, Steve’s head is swivelling like a humming top with eyes, looking for assistance. Once alerted to this, we all start moving around and as far away as we can get! Steve is a really nice guy and a great barman at the Club. Sadly, we can only get Steve out collecting when his work permits. Now for that good looking chap I mentioned. He was rather shy in company, hard to have a conversation with and vowed that he would never, EVER, stand in the street collecting! Well, how times change. Thanks to my involvement with Wings I can honestly quote those lines near theof ‘A Christmas Carol’ – “I am not the man I was!”

Street collecting is very rewarding, not only in what monies we collect, but in the friendliness and experience we gain from the general public exchanging stories and experiences with them, always with a warm smile and cheerful hello. That gives you a warm glow and feeling of wellbeing inside, even in the coldest weather. At the end of the day, we can say what a wonderful day it was and that I have done something worthwhile! REQUEST FOR SUPPORT - RAF INGHAM HERITAGE CENTRE

    Dear Friends

Ingham Aviation Heritage is a Registered Charity, made up of volunteers and members from the local community. Our aim is to create ‘RAF Ingham Heritage Centre’, utilising the old Airmen’s Mess building on the former RAF Ingham airfield. The Heritage Centre will tell of the deeds and sacrifices made by the Polish, Canadian, Australian and British Air & Ground crews who served at RAF Ingham and of the local community who supported them. It is intended that the Heritage Centre will contain an Educational Wing, where schools and local groups can visit, to learn about their local history.

We are already engaging with the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), who require that we provide ‘proof’ of the interest and need within the local and greater community for this project. In order to achieve this, we need to collect letters of support from schools, organisations and groups like yours, as well as Petitions of Support from individuals. Consequently, would you please consider providing us with a letter of support and ask as many of your team, colleagues, neighbours etc, as possible, to sign the Petition of Support. The Petition only requires a name and post code; no address or signature. Please let me reassure you, that providing a Letter of Support or completing the Petition of Support, does not bind you to any commitment or obligation, whether financial or otherwise; it simply demonstrates your support for this Community based Charity Project. Many Thanks in advance for your support. Kind Regards

    Geoff

    Mr Geoff Burton Chairman/Trustee

Letters of support can be sent to : Ingham Aviation Heritage Ltd (Registered Charity No. 1142147) Foxglove Cottage, Chapel Road, Fillingham, Lincolnshire, DN21 5BP Tel.

THE PETITION OF SUPPORT WILL ALSO BE AVAILABLE TO SIGN IN THE RAF ASSOCIATION CLUB. South East and Eastern Area News The South East and Eastern Area newsletter can be downloaded from www.rafa.org.uk/areas-southeast.asp or there are some copies in the Club for you to look at. These articles from the December newsletter may be of interest:

Membership Subscriptions To: All Members of the Association

Classification: The highest importance – Action required

You will all recall the Chairman of Council’s open letter in the April 2012 edition of Air Mail in which he stressed the

point that Membership should “pay for itself” but the reality was that income fell well short of expenditure. Many

replies were received following that article and I thank you all for taking the time to write in with your views. Since

then much discussion has taken place on how to reduce the annual deficit (currently circa £600k). I am sure that we

all agree that Membership should, overall, “pay for itself” otherwise the cost of Membership is being subsidised by

funds that could otherwise be used for welfare purposes which would be much more appropriate. So how do we close

the gap? In simplistic terms there is no easy solution. We either reduce costs or increase income (and the only

source of income is subscriptions) or, we opt for a combination of both. What is abundantly clear is that whatever

course of action is chosen, it must be chosen by you – the Membership. As the Chairman mentioned in his article last

April, the Secretary General has been reviewing administrative expenditure which will help drive down the cost of

Membership. Reducing costs is a constant theme and every effort has and will continue to be made to make further

cuts in any of the administrative procedures.Membership subscriptions has always been a difficult subject and

whether we like it or not, we may have to face the possibility that subscriptions will have to rise in future initially above

inflation if we are serious about trying to reduce the gap.

This is where you, the Members, the very lifeblood of the Association come in! In our 70th year, difficult decisions

have to be made, and you, the Membership, has to make them, that is enshrined in our rules. It is therefore proposed

that the ‘Cost of Membership’ be the main topic for debate at our 70th Anniversary Annual Conference 2013 in

Eastbourne on 11 May. During the debate it is envisaged that a range of proposals would be discussed in order to

reach an acceptable solution. Such options could include:

An electronic copy of Air Mail is made available on-line through the Members login area so that Members

could opt out of receiving a hard copy.

Membership cards are not distributed annually.

    http://www.rafa.org.uk/areas-southeast.asp

  • 8

Annual Members could pay higher subscription fees (and potentially pay by monthly direct debit to spread the

    cost over 12 equal payments).

Associate Members could pay more in subscription fees.

Life Members could be asked to contribute or, say for example, that in order to receive a hard copy Air Mail

they would have to pay for it.

...or any combination of the above.

Whatever we choose we must not single out a particular group of people, this is a Membership wide issue and that

means over 65,000 of you have a view and should take the opportunity to air it.Following on from the debate it would

be envisaged that Conference would agree an action or course of actions and from that a formal Resolution (or

Resolutions) would be proposed to be voted upon to give an agreed mandate going forward. Therefore, it is vital that

your Branch sends a representative to our very special 70th

Anniversary Annual Conference in order to make

your views heard. Better still why not come along yourself, meet old friends, enjoy the entertainment and parade, and

most importantly have your say – it’s your Membership and your Conference.

RAFA Pocket Diaries 2013 – Error Correction

Please note that Wings Day in 2013 should read 14th and NOT 21st September, as printed. The RAF Association apologises to its members for this error.

    Project Pathfinder – Repeat Article

Annual Conference recently approved, subject to the completion of due diligence by Central Council, the formation of a new category of ‘junior’ Membership of the Association for young people between the ages of 13 and 17. A dedicated Project Officer, Group Captain Nicky Loveday Retd, has been identified to undertake the necessary work to enable a detailed proposal and recommendations to be submitted to the RAFA Central Council and subject to agreement, it is hoped to launch a youth membership scheme in 2013. To date, the Project Officer has had discussions with the Youth Leadership teams from the Air Cadet Organisation, the Girls Venture Corps Air Cadets and the Air Scouts and has completed a series of Focus Groups with young people aged 13-17 years old to help design the proposed Youth Membership scheme and ensure that any proposal remains interesting and affordable to the young audience whom we hope to attract to the Association. If any Branches are interested in helping to finance the setup and administration costs or sponsor a benefit, competition prize or award for the Youth Membership scheme, please contact Bob Hounslow, Director of Membership and Areas, on 0116-2688759.

    Flying Scholarship Scheme 2013

The scheme is open to members of the ATC, CCF(RAF) and GVCAC. The five Scholarships provide the overall winning cadet with a course of 35 hours flying training, plus 12 hours each for four runners-up. They are provided as a thank you to the cadets for their tremendous support each year, especially fundraising for the Wings Appeal and to encourage their continued interest in aviation. It would be appreciated if Branch members could make as many Cadets and ACO staff as possible aware of the Scholarships. Applicants can, of course, also be nominated by a RAF Association Branch. Application Forms and Terms & Conditions are available for downloading from the Association’s website www.rafa.org.uk, following the Air Cadet link, or by post from Anne Henson (Services Liaison Manager) at the RAF Association, CHQ, 1171/2 Loughborough Road, Leicester, LE4 5ND, by calling 0116 268 8752, or by email to [email protected] The closing date for applications is 31st January, 2013.

    The Blue Apple Charity

We were recently alerted to a charity called The Blue Apple Charity by a contact at the RBL http://www.blueapplecharity.org.uk/ and felt this should be brought to your attention in case members are approached. They are not, as far as we can tell, an ‘official’ charity, they do not appear to have a charity number and the MoD is not aware of them. MoD are in the process of investigating them further, but their first line of action is to remove the MoD logo from their website.
