The Namibian is the country’s only truly independent and largest selling English daily newspaper. The Namibian, founded in August 1985, by Gwen Lister, owned by Namibia Media Trust with Tangeni Amupadhi as editor since 1 October 2011, has consistently been the paper for the people, by remaining independent and objective, maintaining high levels of integrity and being realistic and persistently unrelenting in its quest for the truth.

Hence the slogan “Still Telling It Like It Is”.

The Namibian was perceived by the apartheid regime to be the mouthpiece of Swapo, and as a result, founding editor Gwen Lister had to endure fire bombings, banning, detentions, harassment and death threats.

The Namibian is widely distributed throughout Namibia, with 36 000 copies printed from Monday to Thursday, and 65 000 on a Friday. It has offices in Oshakati, Keetmanshoop and Swakopmund to ensure broad-based national news coverage.

Through promotion of free speech, as well as a strong sense of social responsibility to give back to the community that has supported the newspaper for 27 years, The Namibian hopes to further grow its position to remain the paper of choice for the people of Namibia.
