BETHANY LUTHERAN CHURCH

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

This year’s Lenten journey plan will include a number of interesting and exciting ad-

ventures. Some of these adventures are described in this issue of the Mustard Seed,

some are still in the planning stage and some may be surprises to all of us as a gift

from the Holy Spirit.

Our Lenten adventures will include a Sunday morning sermon series formed around

the book “Reclaiming the “L” Word - Renewing the Church form Its Lutheran Core” by

Kelly A. Fryer. Following worship we will meet for discussion and conversation of the

weekly segments. I would encourage you to contact the church office and order a copy

of the book for your own reading and study as the sermon series will only deal with 10-

15% of the content. (There will be a copy available in the office for you to look at). Also

those of you away for the winter can contact the office and we will order you a book

and send it to you so you can grow along with those of us still in the cold and snow.

We will work through the topics in this book on the dates shown below. This is an en-

joyable read written in a down to earth style, for example learn why the author says

she married an SOB.

Working on our spiritual discipline will be another Lenten adventure this year. We

will be offering the Sacrament of Holy Communion on a weekly basis. This will help us

recapture the early (1st Century) Church’s understanding of the meal (Communion).

The followers of Jesus at the time of his death, the first Christians, were Jews and reg-

ularly gathered on Saturday for worship in the synagogue. They gathered for prayer,

sang hymns, read scripture and listened to interpretation of scripture. A service very

similar to what we do at Bethany on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. Then every

Sunday morning they would gather for “the meal”. They would share in the Body and

Blood of their Savior, Jesus the Christ. This sharing of the meal is what set them

apart as Christians, as followers of Jesus. This practice continued until the Jewish

authorities banned the followers of Jesus from the synagogue. When that happened

the Christians incorporated the Saturday service of word and prayer with their Sun-

day morning sharing of the meal. Over a couple thousand years this has evolved into

our current practice of worship with Holy Communion.

After we have experienced the “meal” and sharing in the Body and Blood of our Savior

on a weekly basis let’s have some conversation and consider whether we want to follow

the same practice as the first century Christians.

May our Lenten journey together bring us closer to Jesus and one another.

Your Brother in Christ,

Pastor John
