The Mustang Message A note from Dr. Reynolds……. We are all looking forward to fall break next week. School will be out Oct. 9-13th. Our students have worked very hard for the first 9 weeks of school. They all deserve a break. When we return things will get very busy! There are many events in the next few months that will be going on at our school. We will have the Boosterthon, bookfair, Thanksgiving lunches, Red Ribbon Week, and Sharpen the Saw Assemblies to name a few. As you know we are not having a spring carnival this year so that we can have a fall carnival next year. The carnival is by far our main source of fundraising so in the absence of that we will need to make our Boosterthon a big success! At the end of October we will kick off the Boosterthon Fun Run. The run will be on November 2nd. The proceeds will go towards playground equipment, chairs for the music programs, STEM materials and additional Ipads in classrooms. Thank you for continued support! The Mustang Message

A note from Dr.

STEM Challenges:

WBE just completed the 2nd STEM challenge for the year. The students were asked to use the

Engineering Design Process to plan, design and build the tallest tower possible using paper cups and a

few other supplies. The students collaborated in teams and recognized this activity was harder than

they thought. Students brainstormed and redesigned the structures and realized how important it is

to listen to everyone’s ideas.

WBE has also implemented STEM in the Lab for 3rd and 4th grade. The first experience was animal

adaptations. Students built beaks to pick up the most food and learned how different animal

coverings allow heat to stay in the body. The students are enjoying hands on learning and spending

time in the STEM lab. October’s activities will center on Erosion for 4th and Space for 3rd.

A big thank you to all the families for donating items for STEM! We are still looking for anyone willing

to be a guest speakers or sponsor STEM at WBE

FALL READING CHALLENGE

For Who? Any student in kindergarten through 5th grade

Why? For fun, of course! This is an optional reading activity.

What do I do?

1. Choose a mystery, folktale, or spooky book to read. You can also choose any book about fall. Ex. Fall

leaves, pumpkins, Halloween, football, etc.

2. Choose one of these projects to do at home with the book after you read it…

• If you love art, create an advertisement for your book or a new book cover to be displayed in and around

the library for all to see.

• If you love music and lyrics, create a poem, a song, or rap that summarizes your book. You will have the

opportunity to perform it in library.

• If you love technology, create a PowerPoint or a Prezi book commercial for your peers to view.

• If you love to write, compose a completely new ending to the book you read and share with the class.

When does this challenge begin and end? You can begin today. The challenge ends the last week of October.

You will turn in your project on your library day during the week of October 23-27.

What do I get when I meet the challenge? You get a treat from the library’s cauldron and your brain grows

bigger!

Who do I contact if I have questions or need help?

Mrs. Talbot can answer your questions. Parents, feel free to email me at [email protected]
