The Museum of Modern Art 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart
NO. 124 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PROJECTS: VIDEO XXIII
PROJECTS: VIDEO XXIII, on view at The Museum of Modern Art January
4 through January 30, 1979, features works by the San Francisco artist,
Howard Fried. The works are shown weekdays from 11:00 to 5:45, on Thursdays
until 8:15 and weekends until 4:45.
Since 1969, Fried has worked in the area of conceptual and performance
art. "When I'm operating in one system of values, I'm conscious that there
are an infinite number of other value systems that are equally valid,"
Fried comments.
"His works, which take into account the infinite possibilities always
inherent in a structure, are filled with contradictory impulses. Using
videotapes he acts out his theories, records the actions, deals with the
polarities of a situation and studies time as the unique coincidence of
events," Barbara London, director of the exhibition, notes.
Included in this video program are activities from Fried's daily
life: an ordinary day spent in his studio, Fuck You Purdue; his indecision
about placing a restaurant order, Sea Sell Sea Sick at Sea Saw Soar; conver
sations among his artist and musician friends, who are drinking coffee at
a specially made counter-bar, Intraction and Ghost of the Creamer; and a
theoretical art lecture given by himself and a performer, Vito's Reef.
PROJECTS: VIDEO is made possible through the generous support of the
National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency in Washington, D.C. The
Museum's exhibition program is partially funded through the New York State
Council on the Arts.
