Review of 2018

- - - - - - - - - - -

Chairman’s report 2018 will undoubtedly be remembered as being one of our most glorious summers, and it has been another year of progress for the Yorkshire South Premier League.

I must start by congratulating Wakefield Thornes on their magnificent achievement of three consecutive league titles and a second Yorkshire Premier Leagues Championship. Congratulations too to Hallam, on winning our t20 competition on a memorable day at Cleethorpes, and to our under 19s t20 winners, Cleethorpes, and all our other award winners.

When there are winners, there are always losers, and we say goodbye for the time being to Appleby Frodingham and Whiston Parish Church. Appleby Frodingham are inaugural members of our league, and it is only two seasons ago that they challenged Wakefield Thornes in our first title race. I wish my many friends at Brumby Hall all the very best in their attempt to win promotion back to our ranks next season – we will miss them.

In their place, we welcome back our friends at Tickhill, after a season’s absence, and they will be joined by Elsecar, who have finally overcome previous disappointments to achieve promotion to our league. We wish them both well next season.

Our vice-chairman and my fellow representative to the Yorkshire Premier Leagues Management Board, Matt Dixon, has stood down from the committee to devote more time to his family and business. Matt has been a continual source of sound advice over the past four years, as we have planned for and established our league, and he will be missed. Thank you for all you have done, Matt, and best wishes for the future! We are very fortunate to have someone of the calibre of Matt Summerhill to step into these roles.

We have had some difficulties around overseas players this year. The rule introduced last season was not quite right, and after deliberations, we have reverted to our previous rule for 2019. In order to help clubs with the complex issues surrounding player eligibility, we are introducing an Overseas Liaison Officer, Chris Froggett, who will monitor proposed registrations and give advice to clubs.

We have increased the amount of representative cricket that we have played this year, notably for our under 23s. Young players are the future lifeblood of our clubs, and we want them to have the best playing experience that we can. I believe that the players have enjoyed and learned from these games and they finished the season with a 100% record. Although there are a couple of tweaks that we will make, we intend to build on this season’s success. I would like to thank Mark Beardshall and Chris Marples for their work with all the representative teams this season.

Our new disciplinary processes have proved very effective and overall discipline this season has been very good. We can also be very pleased with the umpires’ fair play markings, which show our teams in a very good light.

So we turn our attentions to the future. To use an old cliché, we must move forward to stand still. The committee has some exciting ideas about how we build on what we have done so far, and there will be discussions with our other Premier League colleagues, our partner league, the SYSCL, and our clubs, in the coming months. We must also do all we can to encourage our clubs to produce their own players and help them to retain them. Equally importantly, we must also ensure that we continue to improve the standards of our grounds and facilities as we move forward.

There are a number of people whom I would like to thank. First and foremost, our committee. As I have said many times before, they bring a huge amount of cricket knowledge and experience with them, and although they are from diverse backgrounds and have differing views, they invariably pull together for the good of the League. A huge thanks to them all!

Aston Hall, Cleethorpes, Doncaster, Sheffield Collegiate and Treeton have all done a great job in hosting prestige games, whilst Aston Hall and Whitley Hall have kindly hosted our clubs’ meetings. A very big thank you to all of them too!

The game cannot take place without umpires, and my informal chats as I went around our grounds during the season indicated that, by and large, the clubs are very satisfied with the standards of umpiring. So ‘thank you’ to all our umpires, and to David Ward and Simon Widdup for their unstinting administrative work.

I hope that you will winter well, and I look forward to seeing you again in 2018.

Roger Pugh November 2018

Yorkshire Premier Leagues Championship Semi-final

Town Fields, Doncaster, Saturday 15th September

York 201-7 (50 overs) Jack Leaning 54, Neil James 41, Tom Brooks 50, Mahmood Rasool 2-40, Steve Morgan 3-78 Wakefield Thornes 202-6 (47.3) James Wolfenden 80, Jared Warner 29, Matt Jordan 39*, Dan Woods 3-39, Jack Leaning 2-68 Wakefield Thornes beat York by four wickets

York skipper Dan Woods won the toss and elected to bat on a very good pitch. The dangerous Duncan Snell fell early, bowled by Josh Shaw with just two runs on the board, but YCCC’s Jack Leaning looked in ominously good form until he was caught behind off Rasool for 54. With half the visiting side out for 136 and the overs slipping by, Thornes looked to be in the driving seat, but a brisk partnership of 58 between former Appleby Frodingham wicket-keeper Tom Brooks and Toby Giddings helped York to a respectable 200-7 in their 50 overs.

Thornes started their reply in confident fashion, although skipper Dan Woods and Jack Leaning slowed the run rate when they were introduced into the attack.

James Wolfenden

James Wolfenden and Jared Warner had put on 97 for the first wicket before Warner fell to Leaning for 29. Danger man David Toft was then run out for 10, but Matt Jordan joined Wolfenden and the pair took Thornes to within striking distance of victory before Wolfenden fell lbw to Woods for an excellent match-winning 80. Three more wickets fell cheaply before Jordan (39 not out) saw Thornes home with four wickets.

In the other semi-final, at Scarborough, Great Ayton beat the Bradford League champions and 2016 finalists, Pudsey St Lawrence. Final

Headingley, Saturday 22nd September

Great Ayton 96 (26.3 overs) Andrew Liddle 20, Josh Shaw 3-26, Mahmood Rasool 3-34 Wakefield Thornes 98-3 (25) James Woldenden 20, Jared Warner 28*, David Toft 26 Wakefield Thornes beat Great Ayton by seven wickets

Wakefield Thornes again did themselves and their league proud by winning the Premier Leagues Championship for the second time in two years.

After their narrow defeat in the final against Hanging Heaton last year, the result was never in doubt when Thornes captured the first five Great Ayton wickets for just six runs, to leave their innings in tatters at 25-5. After that, despite some late order resistance, Great Ayton were never going to be able to post a challenging total, and the North Yorkshire & South Durham League side were all out for 97 in the 27th over. Josh Shaw, Mahmood Rasool and Steve Morgan each took three wickets, whilst David Toft ran out the dangerous Sri Lankan Pitigala Jeewantha.

Mahmood Rasool

James Wolfenden got Thornes' reply off to a positive start before being bowled by Jeewantha for 20, David Toft contributed 26 off 36 balls, and Jared Warner held the innings together with an unbeaten 28. Thornes reached their target for the loss of just three wickets off the last ball of the 25th over.

Veteran seamer Mahmood Rasool was adjudged man-of-the-match and Thornes' skipper Tom Froggett received the Championship trophy from Yorkshire CCC Chief Executive Mark Arthur.

Hall of Fame

During the summer of 2017, the League committee endorsed the idea of secretary Steve Ward that we should permanently recognise the great contribution to cricket made by people connected with our league and its clubs.

We agreed the principle that those individuals who ‘have given outstanding service to our clubs or our league’ should be inducted into a Yorkshire South Premier League Hall of Fame. We decided to select six exceptional candidates and induct them into the Hall of Fame at the annual presentation dinner.

We were clear that this would only be the start of our Hall of Fame, and that further inductions would take place at subsequent dinners. Accordingly, during the season, we will write to clubs to seek nominations for the Hall of Fame, which will then be considered for induction at that year’s dinner.

The first six inductees, who were presented with a framed certificate and a League tie at the dinner on 27th October 2017 were:

1. Bill Croft

2. Steve Foster

3. Andy Harrison

4. Bob Leafe

5. Stuart Roberts

6. Dennis Wadd

The 2017 recipients after their induction (left to right) Bill Croft, Dennis Wadd, Bob Leafe, Steve Foster and Stuart Roberts. Andy Harrison was unable to attend the dinner as he was recovering from an operation.

A further three outstanding servants to the League’s clubs will be inducted at the 2018 dinner
