Parish News

Dear Parishioners, Imagine trying to love someone who doesn’t know you exist. I don’t mean being infatuated with someone from afar superficially; imagine truly loving someone for who they are, but who knows little to nothing about you. It would be unbearable. There would be no relationship, no communion, no intimacy between you and the person who you desire to be united with. You would look for every opportunity to reveal yourself to the other person, so that they could know you and come to love you in return. This was essentially the situation between ourselves and our Lord after the Fall. God created the human race out of pure love for us, and He desired to be in communion with us, to have that love returned to Him, yet we were ignorant of Him because of our sinfulness. That was unacceptable. God desired for us to know Him so that we could return that love and thus be in communion with Him once again. So, God revealed Himself to us, and in particular, He revealed to us something about Himself we could never know otherwise: that He is Triune. This is the central mystery of our faith, the mystery that we celebrate this weekend, that God is one God in three persons. No other faith has come to know this about God. This knowledge allows us to have a better understanding of who He is, and therefore a greater love for Him. He is not like a clockmaker, for instance, who builds the clock and sets everything in motion, but after that has no relationship with his creation. Nor is God uncaring or aloof, one who abandons us to our own folly. God is personal, one who is so intimately in love with us that He became one of us in order to rescue us from our sin. That is a knowledge that moves us to love Him in return. So what? How does believing in a triune God change anything? Is it just a tidbit of abstract knowledge, or does it make a difference in your life? It does make a difference, first of all, because we know that God is a relational being. That has an enormous influence on us, especially in the way we pray. He is not some abstract force in the universe, or the wind blowing through the trees. He is a living, tri-personal being, one who loves us and desires to be in a relationship with us. And if God is personal and desires to be in relationship with others, then so are we, since we are created in His image. Just as He did not stay within Himself and watch from a distance as the human race stumbled and fell, neither should we. We are called to empty ourselves for the sake of others, to invest our lives in each other and to make it our goal to bring each other into communion with God. We are not called simply to let people be, but to love them, help them, to work for their good and the good of all. God loves us so much that He revealed Himself to us, and became one of us in order to save us. May we return that love to Him now, as we hope to do for eternity in heaven.-Fr. Liekhus

Men’s Club Softball Update Practice?! Who needs practice? Despite our first ever practice becoming our first ever rainout last Saturday, the men of St. Gabriel’s beat St. Bart’s Blue 16-6, thanks to a 14 run barrage in the third inning. Thank you to our hearty fans for coming to cheer us on and to Deacon “Grillmaster” Tangney for flipping the burgers afterward. Next game: Monday, June 16, 6:15pm vs. OLG Purple on the OLG softball field.

PAINT-A-THON NEWS St Gabriel parish, for our second year, will take part in the 2014 Metro wide Paint-A-Thon. The Paint-A-Thon program is put on by the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches and sponsored by the Valspar Corporation. Valspar representatives inspect all projects to be painted. Each year, on the first Saturday in August, teams paint between 60 to 75 homes in the metropolitan area. We requested a one story house as close to Hopkins as available. Paint-A-Thon will get their inspection reports from Valspar in mid-June and assignments will be known shortly after that. All the painting is scheduled to be completed on Saturday, August 2, 2014. There are also opportunities to do prep work during the week and weekend prior to August 2. We have a core group committed to this service project including prep workers who cannot make it on Saturday, August 2. We welcome anyone else who wants to support the effort. If you are interested please call or email Steve Kessler at (952) 945-9825, [email protected] or Richard Stein at (952) 239-1889, [email protected]. Families including children and friends are welcome. Paint brushes, scrapers, supplies, food and drinks will be provided. Anyone wanting more information on Metro Paint-A-Thon can go to: paintathon.gmcc.org. Thank you for your commitment.

TROPHIES FROM JIS (John Ireland School)

On display now – through the summer! In the display case in the social hall at St. Joseph campus. From the 1980’s and 1990’s through 2004. Because we don’t have room to display them permanently or to store them, we have photographed all of them to save as a record and we are offering them for any former JIS students to take. Note: only take a trophy or plaque if your name is on it, or if you played on the team that is celebrated by that trophy. [John Ireland School was the Consolidated Catholic School in which St. Joseph, St. John and IHM participated from 1969 to 2004.]

WHAT ARE THE VBS PLANNERS CONCOCTING FOR THIS SUMMER?

Last year it was making tie-dyed shirts (among many other cool activities)! VBS will be Monday through Friday, August 4 - 8 at St. John campus. For children going into Grades 1 – 6. Times are from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Secure your registration for our Vacation Bible School by June 15. After this date, we will be offering openings for children from other parishes and around the neighborhood. We want our St. Gabriel's children to register first! Please sign up now before we need to limit registrations! Registration forms are available on our parish website and on the bulletin board at both campuses. Questions? Contact Kathleen Esh – (952) 933-7610 or [email protected]. THANKS!

CALLING FORTH OF CATECHISTS - WE HAVE OPENINGS FOR NEXT FALL CATECHSTS: We foresee a need in Grades 1, 5 and EDGE (Grades 6 through 8 - Team catechists for all three grades together). CATECHIST ASSISTANTS: At all grade levels, Preschool through Confirmation and Youth Group (in order to ensure that we have two adults in each classroom.) CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD: A few more people would make the rotation so much easier. So if you sense that you (or someone you know) is being called by God to share your/their faith with young people, I’d be most happy to discuss the possibility of

being a catechist or a catechist assistant in next fall’s Faith Formation program, Sunday morning’s Preschool Program or Children Liturgy of the Word. Thanks. Chuck Romportl, (952) 540-4762 or [email protected].

Thank You to Our Sponsoring Parishes

As we close our inaugural NDA school year, we are very grateful to our sponsoring parishes, Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Gabriel. Our new regional school relies heavily on funding from the two parishes. Both parishes contribute 20% of the “basket” contributions – electronic and cash – received annually, totaling over $390,000 this year, pretty much equally split between the two parishes. Thank you also to the NDA families who are parishioners of either church for giving to the church, a portion of which ultimately benefits our school!

June 15, 2014 Most Holy Trinity Stewardship Love is Unconditional

“FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY SON…” JOHN 3:16A

Is your love conditional? Is there a price others have to pay to receive your love? Are you the kind of Steward who is generous with your time, money and possessions? If you give someone something, do you expect something in return? Do you give your time freely or do you “fit it in” when it’s convenient for you?

SAN GABRIEL ARCANGEL

Confesiones, domingos 12;30pm Santa Misa, domingos 1:00pm

Pastor: Rev. Padre James Liekhus (Padre Jim)

BAUTISMOS
