Parishioners of Holy Spirit – Deacon John Hogan – Bishop Barres

Dear friends, Last week we had another very successful Family Festival and I owe the success to you, the parishioners of Holy Spirit. You may have been a volunteer or attended the festival but, either way, you were the reason for the success. Everyone had a wonderful time, we had very few issues and the parish made a very healthy profit. We will give you the exact number, hopefully, by next week. Within the next few weeks I will acknowledge the volunteers. They were the true reason why the festival was a success so, if I miss someone, please let me know.

I must begin with our festival committee. I am impressed with their hard work, organizational skills and their love for the parish. We could not do this without them! Our chairperson is Kevin Fitzpatrick. He is the brains behind the scenes. He takes the lead, follows through and gets the job done. Pray that he is interested in continuing because I would not move forward without him. The other members are: Maria Caridi, May Deegan, Maureen and Tony Jackson, Joe Walsh, Joe McCartan, Bill O’Neill, Gerry Frudden, Tommy Kane, Howard Ammerman, Mark Farina, Bill Dempsey, Jim Bush and Deacon Lachlan.

Last Saturday, June 3rd, John Hogan was ordained to the Diaconate at St. Agnes Cathedral. We congratulate Deacon John, his wife Maureen and their two daughters: Sarah and Rebecca. John will the serve people of Holy Spirit parish for many years to come. Congratulations,John!

Next Sunday, at the 9:30 AM Mass, Bishop John Barres will serve the people of New Hyde Park. Please feel free to come, everyone is welcome.

Peace and God Bless,

Fr. Grieco

DEACON LACHLAN

Today we celebrate Trinity Sunday. The Liturgical Color for today as reflected in the priest’s vestments is white. After Pentecost the Church resumes what is now called the season of “Ordinary Time” where, other than for Solemnities like today, the Liturgical Color will be green. But what does Ordinary time really mean? Is it some sort of generic season in the Church that has no focus?

On the contrary, Ordinary Time has a specific focus even though the English name for it can be confusing. In Latin this period of time is called “Tempus Per Annum,” more literally translated as “time during the year.” The English translators chose to present it as “Ordinary Time,” which has at its root the Latin word “ordo,” or in English “order.” In one sense this season takes its name from the ordinal numbers by which the Sundays are known (Second, Third, Fourth, etc. Sunday in Ordinary Time. In a deeper sense, though, Ordinary Time can be seen as a “time of order” in the Church’s year. So what “order” does it have?

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops explains:“Christmas Time and Easter Time highlight the central mysteries of the Paschal Mystery, namely, the incarnation, death on the cross, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ, and the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The Sundays and weeks of Ordinary Time, on the other hand, take us through the life of Christ. This is the time of conversion. This is living the life of Christ. Ordinary Time is a time for growth and maturation, a time in which the mystery of Christ is called to penetrate ever more deeply into history until all things are finally caught up in Christ. The goal, toward which all of history is directed, is represented by the final Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.”

Ordinary Time is a specific season in the Church that focuses on the life of Christ during his three years of public ministry. That is why the start of Ordinary Time begins with the Baptism of the Lord, as that is the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. The Second Sunday of Ordinary Time follows suit, focusing on the Wedding

Feast at Cana, also known as Jesus’ first public miracle.

The color for this liturgical season is green, which is most associated with growth. Ordinary Time is then viewed as a time of growing in our knowledge and love of Jesus. It is a time “ordered” to spiritual growth, walking in the footsteps of Jesus’s public life.

So although the words ‘ordinary time’ may convey a sense of being less than important, this liturgical season has a very important place in the cycle of our lives as followers of Jesus Christ.

May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen!
