PASTOR’S CORNERJune 17 - 18, 2017

Homework for the week of June 18 - June 24Matthew 11:28-30

My brother-in-law, Lawrence Richard, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday morning, June 3, at his home. Thevisitation and the Rosary was at Walters Funeral Home on Thursday, June 8, and the Funeral Mass was at St GenevieveChurch on Friday, June 9, at 2PM. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery on the Breaux Bridge Highway. In my name, in mysister’s name, Gloria S. Richard, and in the name of our family, I want to thank all of you who were so kind to be at thevisitation, at the Rosary and at the Funeral Mass. The large number of you who came touched our hearts and yourprayers, your presence and your friendship were so comforting to every one in the family, especially to Gloria, to thedaughters, Rachelle and Rhonda, and the five grandchildren. We are also very grateful to those who brought food to thevisitation, those who gave flowers, plants, cards and memorials. May the Lord bless all of you with his grace, mercy andgoodness for your thoughtfulness. Please keep the family in your prayers in the days to come. May Lawrence Richardrest in the peace of the heavenly Father as we remember and honor his life, and cherish his memory

We honor our Mothers on the second Sunday of May each year. This Sunday, the third of the month of June, we honorour Fathers. In my name as Pastor of St. Elizabeth Seton Church, I extend Happy Father’s Day wishes to all the fathersof our parish and of our families. Fathers, may you have a happy, a peaceful and a joyful day with your children andfamilies. May all Fathers feel the affection, the appreciation and the gratitude of their children on this special day of theyear. May each one of us do our best to reach out to our Fathers with a visit, a call, a card, a gift, a text or some sign ofappreciation for all he has done for us. The two most primary relationships we enjoy are with our Mother and with ourFather. Those relationships are beautiful and meaningful, at times delicate and complicated, and always formative to usas we grow and mature. Through the wisdom and the grace of the Lord, may each one of us have a kind, peaceful, honest, affectionate, caring and an understanding relationship with our human father.

Fathers, we thank you for your commitment and your devotion to your family, to your wives and mothers of yourchildren, and to your children. We are grateful for your generosity of yourself, for your example and your presence toyour children and family. As important as the material and financial support of your family are, your emotional and yourspiritual support are even more important to the health and well being of your children and your family. We are indeedthankful for how you care for your family, how you are present with and to the members of the family, your wives andyour children, how you are the true leader of the family as a man of faith, of kindness, of mercy and of example.Fathers, as your care for your family and as you father your children, let God the heavenly Father gently father you andguide you in your duties and in your responsibilities as a father. Fathers, your children are really God’s children given toyou and to your wives for you to care for, to nurture, to educate and to guide to maturity. Call on the Lord to help you,to bless you, to provide for you and to strengthen you as a Father. Bring your children to the Lord in prayer daily andoften if not daily pray with your children and your family, especially when you worship God on the Lord’s Day as afamily. It is well known that the religious example and spiritual guidance of the Father are profoundly formative in theattitude and in the way children grow as adults.

This Sunday is the Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi Sunday). The Mass, the Lord’sSupper, is at the very heart of our worship of God as we gather on the Lord’s Day. As much as we strive to give Godthe praise, the honor and the glory that he deserves, we receive so much more than we are ever able to give. When wecome on the Lord’s Day, we are nurtured with the very presence of the Savior. We are filled with grace, mercy andpeace. We receive the Body and Blood of the Lord. We are given the Bread of Life and enjoy communion with Christand with one another at the altar of the Lord. May our hearts be grateful, our souls be open, our minds docile and ourconsciences sincere and contrite as we approach the altar of the Lord on the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. Mybest wishes, love, prayers and gratitude to you and to your loved ones, for who you are, for all you do for the Lord andfor the good of St. Elizabeth Seton Church Parish. Jesus is the living bread come down from heaven.

SHALOM! Fr. Gary

REDISCOVER CATHOLICISM by MatthewKelly

Kelly reveals the essence of authentic Catholic spiritualitywhile addressing some of the most important quetionswe face today both as individuals and as a church.

Faith for FamiliesToday’s family faith section focuses on infancy. The firststage of spiritual development, according to James W.Fowler, is Primal Faith (ages 0-2). This is the stage whena child bonds with his family. Attachment to a primarycaregiver is essential to all future development.Attachment is a predictor of intelligence. Therefore, it istrue that a baby can NOT be spoiled. They learn totrust and regulate when their needs are quickly attendedto. Contrary to logic, young children who are held andnurtured when upset are MORE likely to be able tocalm themselves and manage emotions as a child. Thetask of families of infants is to hold, nurture, and respondto their needs. If you have an infant, here are some tipsfor fostering spiritual development:

*Fall in love with each other.*Use calm voices in the infant’s presence*Read, sing, talk, pray with them*Attend to physical and emotional cues*Offer objects and strategies to self-soothe (music, pacifier, lovey, etc..)

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humblevoices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed yourorder and returned to its former quietude. You are still theMaster of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a dangerover which we have no control. The Gulf, like a provokedand angry giant, can awaken from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land andspread chaos and disaster.

During this hurricane season we turn to you, O LovingFather. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories arestill so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to healwith the passing of time. 0 Virgin, Star of the Sea, OurBeloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in ourbehalf, so that spared from the calamities common to thisarea and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we willwalk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach heavenlyJerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us.

Today’s feast celebrates another central mystery ofour faith - the mystery of the Eucharist. Like the mysteryof the Trinity, the real presence of the Body and Bloodof Christ in the Eucharist can never be fully understood, but can only be believed. Just as the Israelites in thedesert were invited to put their trust in God’s word tothem, we are invited to trust wholly in the word ofJesus. In today’s Gospel Jesus promises to give us ashare in his very own flesh and blood, and a share ineternal life besides. We are called to take him at hisword and open our hearts to receive true nourishmentand life from our participation in the Eucharist

TRUST IN JESUS

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONAt the heart of today’s solemnity is a eucharistic

procession, held in many parishes, that calls to mind theprocession of Holy Thursday, yet has a purpose differentfrom the somber adoration in the night watch. In the lateMiddle Ages, a procession through the city with the BlessedSacrament was an occasion of heartfelt joy and greatemotion. In a time when people seldom approached thealtar to receive Holy Communion, the procession throughthe streets, past homes and workplaces, was a vibrantreminder that Christ was with them as a dear companionand guide.

Every year on this day, a joyful procession winds throughthe streets of Rome from the Lateran cathedral. A fewyears ago, Pope John Paul II, deeply moved at the sight ofthe throng accompanying the sacred host, said that we oughtto feel profoundly united with the faithful everywhere inthe world at such a moment. “Before our mind’s eye all theChurches of the world, from East to West, from North toSouth, are present.”Originally this feast was on theThursday after Trinity Sunday, but after the calendar reformof 1970, its title was expanded from “Corpus Christi” to“The Body and Blood of Christ” and in the United States itwas moved to the Sunday after Trinity Sunday. Even thoughEaster season ended two weeks ago, this beautiful feast isaglow with Easter light.
