What is Waveform Therapy?Waveform therapy is used by physical therapists, chiropractors, occupational therapists, and other physicians to treat patients who have injuries to their muscle or other body tissues. Also known as “e-stim” or “stim therapy”, this type of treatment can be used for several different purposes, including:

• to decrease pain

• to improve circulation

• to improve muscle control

• to increase muscle strength and tone

• to target other specific conditions (e.g. treating excessive sweating in a person’s hands)

What is the (Biphasic) TENS?• Biphasic Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a

therapy that uses low-voltage electrical current for pain relief.

• People use TENS to relieve pain for several different types of illnesses and conditions. They use it most often to treat muscle, joint, or bone problems that occur with illnesses such as osteoarthritis or fibromyalgia, or for conditions such as low back pain, neck pain, tendinitis, or bursitis. People have also used TENS to treat sudden (acute) pain, such as labor pain, and long-lasting (chronic) pain, such as cancer pain.

What is Interferential Current?Interferential Current (also referred to as IFC) is used to address pain in patients. IFC is the most commonly used stimulation therapy waveform because it is a comfortable current for most patients. The interferential waveform is versatile. It can be used effectively for both acute and chronic pain.

What is EMS or Neuromuscular Stimulation?

• Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS), also known as neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) or electro-myo-stimulation, is the elicitation of muscle contraction using electric impulses. EMS has received increasing attention in the last few years because of its potential to serve as a strength training tool for healthy subjects and athletes, a rehabilitation and preventive tool for partially or totally immobilized patients, a testing tool for evaluating the neural and/or muscular function in vivo, and a post-exercise recovery tool for athletes.

• The impulses are generated by a device and delivered through electrodes on the skin in direct proximity to the muscles to be stimulated. The impulses mimic the action potential coming from the central nervous system, causing the muscles to contract. The electrodes are generally pads that adhere to the skin. The use of EMS has been cited by sports scientists as a complementary technique for sports training and published research is available on the results obtained.

What is the EMS (continued)?

EMS provides these specific benefits:

• Increased local blood circulation• Muscle re-education• Relaxation of muscle spasms• Maintaining or increasing range of motion• Prevention or retardation of disuse atrophy• Postsurgical calf stimulation to prevent

venous thrombosis

What is Russian?Russian current is most often used to strengthen muscles. It is also commonly used to re-educate muscle groups after a nerve pathway has been damaged, such as in the case of someone who has had a stroke.

What is High-Volt Pulsed Current• This stimulation modality employs a monophasic pulsed current, the pulses

being delivered in a doublet (hence the 'twin peak' term). Each pulse is of short duration (typically less than 200µs), but, as the name implies, at a high peak voltage (up to 500V, typically 150-500V). By virtue of the fact that each pulse is very short, the current flow through the tissue will average to a very low level - thus the links with micro-current type therapies.

• There is an evidence base for its application in a range of clinical presentations, mainly relating to the stimulation of wound healing, pain relief and facilitated edema resolution.

What is Fixed Micro-current?• A microcurrent electrical neuromuscular

stimulator or MENS (also microamperage electrical neuromuscular stimulator) is a device used to send weak electrical signals into the body. Such devices apply extremely small (less than 1 microampere) electrical currents to nerves using electrodes placed on the skin. One microampere (uA) is 1 millionth of an ampere and the uses of MENS are distinct from those of "TENS" which runs at one milliamp(mA) or one thousandth of an amp. Fixed microcurrent sends a set amount of current into the tissue, instead of current that continually adjusts to biofeedback.

• MENS uses include treatments for pain, Diabetic neuropathy, age-related macular degeneration, wound healing, tendon repair, Plantar fasciitis and ruptured ligament recovery. Most microcurrent treatments concentrate on pain and/or speeding healing and recovery. It is commonly used by professional and performance athletes with acute pain and/or muscle tenderness as it is drug-free and non-invasive, thus avoiding testing and recovery issues. It is also used as a cosmetic treatment.

What is the Pulse Wave Classic ?• A handheld portable 2-channel electrical stimulation device

featuring four Waveforms: (TENS, EMS, Interferential & Micro-current). The touch pad buttons allow you to increase stimulation strength.

• The electrodes attach to the skin using the self-adhesive pads. When the is switched on, small electrical impulses are delivered to the affected area of the body, which is felt as a tingling sensation.

• The electrical impulses can block or reduce the pain signals going to the spinal cord and brain which can help reduce or relieve pain and muscle spasm.

• Research indicates that TENS use can reduce pain medications by up to 55%.

WHAT ARE THE FOUR TREATMENT MODALITIES OF OUR PULSE WAVE CLASSIC UNIT?

• 1. TENS Units are thought to disrupt the pain cycle by delivering a different, non-painful sensation to the skin around the pain site. In essence, it modulates the way we process the pain sensations from that area. TENS closes the pain gate, so to speak. Depending on the frequency the TENS unit delivers, the electrical stimulation can also trigger the body to release endorphins. Endorphins act as natural painkillers, and help promote a feeling of well-being.

• 2. Electronic Muscle Stimulators have been thoroughly proven to help with physical therapy where nerve and muscle damage has occurred. Many therapists highly recommend the use of these units when their patients routinely complain of sore muscles during and after exercise workouts, or have some form of nerve damage that prevents them from getting the most out of life. Muscle stimulators also help with toning as well as the after-pain associated with strenuous weight training exercises. In this way the electronic muscle stimulators can help the body building enthusiast to better control the level of pain that is felt after a workout. Some people with problem areas such as sore shoulder muscles can use the stimulators to help alleviate the pain before the next session of exercising.

WHAT ARE THE FOUR TREATMENT MODALITIES OF OUR PULSE WAVE CLASSIC UNIT?

• 3. Micro-current Therapy produces minute electrical signals like those naturally occurring when the body is repairing damaged tissues. By applying similar electrical currents, the healing process is enhanced. Microcurrent Therapy is often recommended in cases involving soft tissue inflammation or muscle spasm. Since Microcurrent Therapy mimics the body's electrical fields it is helpful in relieving pain and stimulating the healing of soft tissues.

• 4. Interferential Current Therapy is essentially a deeper form of TENS. In essence, IFC modulates a high frequency (4000 Hz) carrier waveform with the same signal produced by a TENS unit. The high frequency carrier waveform penetrates the skin more deeply than a regular TENS unit, with less user discomfort for a given level of stimulation. Deep in the tissues, the carrier waveform is cancelled out, resulting in a TENS-like signal deep under the skin. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the IFC units may be useful for patients who have not had relief from TENS. Interferential stimulation is concentrated at the point of intersection between the electrodes. This concentration occurs deep in the tissues as well as at the surface of the skin. Conventional TENS and Neuromuscular stimulators deliver most of the stimulation directly under the electrodes. Thus, with Interferential Stimulators, current perfuses to greater depths and over a larger volume of tissue than other forms of electrical therapy. As you can see, there are unique benefits to each type of therapies. All of the therapies on the Pulse Wave Classic are helpful in treating a large variety of conditions. The goal is to find the best therapy or therapies so you can achieve your personal goals to enhance the overall quality of life.
