Presidents Report

Dear Jaycees and Friends, I hope that everyone is having a happy and healthy summer. We have done some awesome things in the chapter in the past few months and I would like to thank some people for their efforts! Thank you to Josh Springer, Carrie May and Renee Dolan for running a great Texas Hold ‘em Tournament. It was a manageable size and we learned a lot from the experience and are ready to do it again! Thank you to Kim Doughty for keeping us going with new things to do like the meditation class and planning great member socials, like the trip to the comedy club. I was not able to attend, but heard that a great time was had by all and that Carrie May once again was recognized for her laughter and support of the comedians! We will have to plan another outing like that soon! My last thank you goes out to Angela Backus, who is working hard to get the Children’s Back to School Shopping Spree recreated and hosted a successful Habitat for Humanity Project. Way to go. I hope to see everyone at the Family Picnic on July 11. This will include an informal general membership meeting and potluck dinner. The chapter will provide the main dish and you can sign up for a dish to pass. Look for your invitation online soon! Enjoy your summer and remember…haunted house season is just around the corner! Amy E. Miller 78th President Lansing Jaycees [email protected]

Family Picnic

July’s general membership meeting will be held on July 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Delta Mills Park. It will include a family picnic. The chapter will provide the main dish, iced tea and soda and you are asked to bring yourself, your family and a dish to pass! We have the pavilion at the park reserved until dusk. You are also welcome to bring adult beverages, as we do have a permit. Look for your invitation in your email box!

Thirsty Thursday! Come join us for a Lugnuts Game on Thursday, July 6, 2006 at 7:05 p.m. Thursday game specials include $2 20-ounce draft beer and $2 22-ounce sodas. Tickets are $9 and we will meet before the game at the Nuthouse. Please contact Amy Miller at [email protected] if you are interested in attending!

Texas Hold ‘em Tournament a Success! The chapter held a Texas Hold ‘em Tournament at the Grand Ledge American Legion on June 3, 2006. We hosted 18 players and paid out over $400 in prize money! While the player pool was slightly less than we had hoped for, we found that the size was very manageable and a good way to have a small, successful tournament and learn the ropes! Our very own president, Amy Miller, played in the tournament and took first place. Thank you to Amy for donating her winnings back to the chapter!

Breast Cancer Three Day Fundraiser The chapter will be hosting the Texas Hold ‘em portion of a fundraising party for the Breast Cancer Three Day Team. The fundraising party will start at 2 p.m. on July 9, 2006 at the Crystal Bar in Holt. If you are interested in playing in the poker tournament or are an experienced dealer, please contact Sheryl Soczek at [email protected].

Cedar Point Trip

How would you like to end the summer with an overnight trip to Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH? Do you hate people that don’t like roller coasters? Have you not been on a roller coaster in years? Let’s go to Cedar Point! We will be heading to Cedar Point on Friday, August 25, 2006. The current plans are to drive down early Friday morning, go to the park for the day and stay over that night. Further details will be forthcoming. If you are interested in attending, please contact Amy Miller at [email protected].

Book Club Review “The Namesake” “The Namesake,” by Jhumpa Lahiri, is a novel about the Indian-American immigrant experience through two generations of the Ganguli family. The story begins in 1968 with Ashoke Ganguli, a Ph.D. candidate at MIT and his wife, Ashima. As they start their new life together in the United States, they mourn the life they left behind in Calcutta. The main character of the book is their son, Gogol Ganguli. Waiting for a “good name” from her grandmother that never came, Gogol was named after Ashoke’s favorite Russian author, as he had to have a name before leaving the hospital. Gogol focuses much resentment on his odd name, neither American nor Bengali, but Russian. Lahiri chronicles Gogol’s search for identity as a first generation American. Gogol goes to Yale, changes his name to Nikhil and recreates himself as the person he would like to be, although he never loses his old identity. She takes us through his relationships with a commune-raised daughter of hippies whose upbringing couldn’t be more difficult than his own to a failed marriage to a Bengali woman from his parents’ crowd who is as adrift as he is. Gogol resents, and then rejects the name that was so important and symbolized so much to his father. Given a copy of Gogol’s stories for his 14th birthday, the book was unopened on a shelf until he found it after his father’s death. Only then, he began to read it. Ultimately, Gogol comes to appreciate his parents’ past and the world they created for him. Amy E. Miller [email protected]

Community Development Back to School Shopping Spree

On Saturday, August 19, the Jaycees will once again be helping local kids get ready for a new school year. This year we’ll be shopping at the Lansing Kohl’s store, where we’ll be able to get a 15 percent discount on new school clothes for 20 children. The kids will be referred to us by the Lansing Police Department and the Ingham County Courts, and they are always very appreciative of the new school clothes and supplies that we help them get. We’ll need at least 20 adult chaperones to help out the day of the event, so please plan on spending Saturday morning shopping with us. If you can volunteer for the Shopping Spree, please contact Angela Backus at [email protected] or 517-980-3759.

July JAMM (Jaycees Acting More Monthly) In July the Lansing Jaycees will be collecting items for our Back to School Shopping Spree. Please bring any of the items below to the July GMM. We will use these items to help provide backpacks full of school supplies to each of the children at the Shopping Spree. If you have any questions, please email Sarah Taber at [email protected].

• Pencils • Pens • Crayons • Colored pencils • Pencil boxes • Rulers • Notebooks • Folders • Giftcards to stores where we can purchase supplies (Wal-Mart, Target, Staples, Office Max, etc.)

There will also be a 50/50 raffle at the GMM (tickets are $1 or 6/$5) with the proceeds going to purchase school supplies or other items for the event.

Habitat for Humanity On Saturday, June 24, we joined a Habitat for Humanity crew to work on a new home for a Lansing family. Sheryl Soczek, Mike Castelein, Kim Doughty, Portia Dyrenforth and Angela Backus helped clean up the construction site and drywall the home. Luckily Mike had volunteered with Habitat before and Sheryl had just dry walled her basement so they could show the rest of us newbie’s what to do. (We are now experts with the power screwdriver and determining the difference between 5/8”and ½” drywall!)

Everybody’s favorite project is back! The Lansing Jaycees are responsible for a two-mile stretch of I-96 between exits 95 and 93. Our next pick-up date will be July 13, we will meet at 6 p.m. (location TBD), and carpool to the pick-up area. Even though picking up trash is not most people’s idea of a good time, this is an important project for our community and the environment. It’s a quick project, we will spend no more than 1 ½ hours to pick up as much trash as we can – the more volunteers we have, the better our stretch of the highway will look. As a bribe to get more volunteers, we can find a local watering hole afterwards that won’t mind if we stink a little, and your Community VP will spring for the first round.

Dear Lansing Area Business Owner

Since 1929, the Lansing Junior Chamber of Commerce (the Lansing Jaycees) has helped develop leaders in the Lansing area by running a variety of projects to benefit the community. Some of our group’s recent projects have included:

• Our annual Easter Egg Hunt on the Capital lawn • Painting children’s faces at the East Lansing Art Festival • Most recently, organizing a One-Stop Shopping benefiting Toys for Tots • Infamous Annual Haunted House

The Jaycees also volunteer their time to help other community organizations, including:

• Southside Neighborhood Association • Child and Family Services • Volunteers of America • Ronald McDonald House

The Lansing Jaycees continue to strive to give back to the community. To assist us with this goal, we will be holding our 3rd annual Lansing Jaycees Golf Scramble on August 12, 2006, at Ledge Meadows Golf Course.

Last years event had 60 participants and raised over $2,000 allowing the Jaycees to continue their assistance to the Lansing Community through the aforementioned programs. With last year’s sponsorships, all participants were able to receive both a prize as well as a gift bag.

The Jaycees are contacting you and your company to ask for your assistance with a sponsorship for this years golf outing. Attached to this letter you will find a sponsorship breakdown which includes the sponsorship amount and benefits for each sponsorship level.

If you would like to contribute to the 3rd Annual Jaycee Golf Outing, please feel free to contact a member of the Jaycees either by phone (810) 577-8759 or email [email protected].

Thank you for considering being a part of this event.
