The Monthly Herald March 2014 FROM THE PASTOR… The wind blew the other night. Wow, did it blow! Gusting at forty miles an hour plus. And you know what happened… power went out for six hours or so. Right in the middle of a TV program I wanted to watch. Blink… then back on again for two seconds. Blink… back on. Blunk. Off. The mad scramble for flashlights. The discovery of some dead batteries. Under the covers for the duration and praying that the brave folks at WE Energies would restore the power soon. And they did. How’s the power in your Spiritual life? Strong and steady? Most of the time? Intermittent or weak? Just as there was no problem at the power plant the other night when our electric went out, there’s no problem with the source of our spiritual power. God is God, ever strong and faithful. Word and Sacrament remain vital and life sustaining. So what happens when the wind blows and the power blinks? It’s in the connection. That happens when our worship life falters and we begin to skip church. First a week or two, then a month, and a year… (I’m not talking to our homebound / disabled / elderly members here, who would rather be in worship than anywhere else!) How about our prayer and devotional lives? Intermittent? Faulty? Bible study? Too busy? And then we wonder: What happened to the power in our lives? Because of Christ, God forgives us when we confess that we have broken or weakened our connection to Him because of our sin and repent. There’s power in that. We need our Lord’s power in our lives every day as we face the maelstrom of evil and sin that surrounds us. There’s no better place to strengthen our connection, (our faith!) by the power of the Holy Spirit in His Word: In church, in Word and Sacrament, in our prayers and devotions. Blessings! Pastor S. The Monthly Herald March 2014

FROM THE PASTOR…

The wind blew the other night. Wow, did it blow! Gusting at forty miles an

hour plus. And you know what happened… power went out for six hours

or so. Right in the middle of a TV program I wanted to watch. Blink…

then back on again for two seconds. Blink… back on. Blunk. Off. The

mad scramble for flashlights. The discovery of some dead batteries.

Under the covers for the duration and praying that the brave folks at WE Energies

would restore the power soon. And they did.

How’s the power in your Spiritual life? Strong and steady? Most of the time? Intermittent or

weak? Just as there was no problem at the power plant the other night when our electric

went out, there’s no problem with the source of our spiritual power. God is God, ever strong

and faithful. Word and Sacrament remain vital and life sustaining. So what happens when the

wind blows and the power blinks? It’s in the connection.

That happens when our worship life falters and we begin to skip church. First a week or two,

then a month, and a year… (I’m not talking to our homebound / disabled / elderly members

here, who would rather be in worship than anywhere else!) How about our prayer and

devotional lives? Intermittent? Faulty? Bible study? Too busy? And then we wonder: What

happened to the power in our lives?

Because of Christ, God forgives us when we confess that we have

broken or weakened our connection to Him because of our sin and

repent. There’s power in that. We need our Lord’s power in our

lives every day as we face the maelstrom of evil and sin that

surrounds us. There’s no better place to strengthen our connection,

(our faith!) by the power of the Holy Spirit in His Word: In church, in

Word and Sacrament, in our prayers and devotions.

Blessings!

“The Life of Joseph” Class meets in the Fellowship Hall Leader: Pastor Bender

The Thursday morning Bible study is taking a close look at the life of Joseph as recorded in the Book of Genesis. There are several important things to learn from Joseph's life and God working out His promises through the life of Joseph! When God gives a promise, it comes true, even if others don't want to believe it. When you go through tough times, God is still with you and you can rise above the circumstances. When you do the right thing, bad things can still happen to you, but God won't let you down. And, above all, God desires us to be reconciled with one another through sincere forgiveness and letting go of the past. These and even more lessons are learned through studying God's holy Word. Everyone is welcome.

March, 2014

Groundwork Guatemala, version 2014, is now official and preparing for take-off! Our team has formed, and we are up to 12 members, which will be a full-house at the Mission House.

We welcome our new members: Crystal Barry, Sandy Reynolds, Joe Ross, and LouAnn Zimmel. Our returning veterans are Pastor Bender, Jean Gabler, Nancy Gottschalk, Heidi Leiser, Darla Leiterman, Bob Reynolds, Lenore VanSanten, and Carri Wolcyk. As you can well imagine, there is a lot of enthusiasm in this group. Romans 12: 1-8 and 1Cor 12: 14-27 have given us guidance as we are getting to know one another, and striving to form a strong working team, capitalizing on the many different talents that our members bring to the group.

We have been meeting bi-weekly since mid-January. Happily, much of our official paperwork is now completed. We have been developing ideas for some fundraisers that will help defray costs for travel and our stay at the mission; these will take place over the coming months. Our first event will be a Lenten Fish Fry at Big Deal Burgers on Friday, March 14, so mark your calendars, save up your appetite, and bring some friends!

With paperwork and fundraising in progress, we have been able to turn to our assigned scripture, which will be the basis for the Faith Lesson, which we teach in a different village each day. Every year, we get our assignment and kind of let out a group “HUH? How do we teach THAT?” and this year is no different! Our Bible lesson is Genesis chapter 13, Abram and Lot divide the land. The memory verse is Luke 6:31, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” After a brainstorming session, the ideas started to flow (Thank you, Holy Spirit!) and we are getting excited. We will be teaching kids (ranging from about 3 to 10), “youth” (ranging from about 11 to mid-teens), and adults (mostly women of all ages.) Soon it will be time to turn our attention to a craft project for the kids, and learning/teaching some praise songs in Spanish.

Every member of the team feels very blessed to be a part of this mission trip, and to have the great congregational support that all of you have given us. Please feel free to approach team members, ask questions, and encourage them. We ask for your financial support as you are able. Most of all, we ask for your continued prayers for the success of our mission. God’s blessings to all!
