If you don't know of the band Queen, you certainly know some of their biggest songs: We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions, Bohemian Rhapsody, and the entire soundtrack to the 1980 film Flash Gordon. (Ok, you may not recognize that last one.) In my obsession with the music of this band, I would get caught up in wanting to compare and contrast the quality of each of Queen's fifteen studio albums. To do so, I would listen to each song. I would then assign a numerical rating to each song on a scale from 1 to 10. If a song was garbage, I would rate it a 1. If a song was excellent and life changing, it would get a 10. I would then add up the ratings I had given each song to come up with a sum that would numerically express what I thought of a whole album. Hopefully, as you were reading that exhausting explanation of how I listened to the music of Queen, you were saying to yourself, "This doesn't seem like the best way to appreciate music." If you did indeed say that to yourself, you are correct. It was a horrible way to appreciate music. For you see, while each song is its own artistic accomplishment, an album has to be taken in as one cohesive work. An album of music is one artistic expression, and cannot be simply divided up into the songs that are on it. Thankfully, as I matured, I realized this and I no longer listen to an album of music by over-analyzing each song. I tell you about my relationship to the music of Queen because so often we think of our experience of life much in the same way. We often comprehend life as these disjointed moments and episodes. Pastor’s Ponderings From Rev. Calob Rundell

Appreciate the full album, not just the songs

Friends, let me share with you something about myself that not a lot of people know. I'm trusting that you won't misuse this information I am about to give into your care. When I was in middle school, all I listened to was the band Queen.

But really, life is one fluid complete experience that moves continuously. When it comes to our faith experience of following Jesus, we so often treat it as isolated episodes. eternal flow of God's seamless everything.

Right now, we are in the time just following the miracle of the resurrection that we celebrate on Easter. It is just one moment, albeit a big one, in the continual story God is telling. But so often we treat our experience of Easter as an isolated episode. We sing Easter songs, we hear the account of the first Easter, and then it’s on to whatever is next. My friends, don’t treat your faith the same way I treated a Queen album. Admire the big picture while appreciating the details. See, hear, and feel each day and each season as its own special moment that is a part of the eternal flow of God’s story. Because in and through the eternal flow of God’s story, everyone and everything is connected. It is all connected in the amazing album God is putting together. Peace, Rev. Calob Rundell [email protected]

Windows Restoration Project Update

April 2017

Many exciting things are happening to move our Windows

Restoration Project forward!

After reviewing proposals from several contractors, we

have selected to work with Mike Delva of Denver Art

Glass. With the scope of the total project to restore all the

stained glass windows, we have determined, that the

project be divided into three phases, which will span

several years.

Phase 1, includes two large (12 x 19) east and south facing

windows.

We are happy to inform you that we have successfully

completed the grant application process to the State

Historical Fund to request funding for Phase 1 of our

project. If granted, the SHF would provide 75% of project

costs for non-religious windows and we would be

responsible for a cash match of 25%, plus the cost of

religious windows.

We will be notified in August as to the results of the State’s

decision. Work would be scheduled to begin in the fall.

Phase 1 costs, as stated in the grant are:

Overall project costs - Phase 1

(Non-religious windows, only) $124,065.60

Proposed State Historical Funding

(75%) $ 93,049.20

Church Cash Match

(25% - our responsibility) $ 31,016.40

Religious Windows

(our responsibility) $ 1,320.00

Our Total Financial Responsibility

for Phase 1 $ 32,336.40

To Date:

Financial contributions received for the

Windows Restoration Project: $ 13,715.00

Grant Preparation Costs: $ -3,255.00

Net Donations: $ 10,460.00

Total amount yet to be raised: $ 21,876.40

Thank you for your continued interest and prayerful

support. Stay tuned for information regarding our

upcoming and ongoing fundraising efforts for this historic

project. Your financial support is greatly appreciated.

You’re invited to come check out Kairos!

Since October there has been a lot of buzz around the church about an experience called Kairos. What is Kairos? Kairos is a prison ministry that has recently started at the Buena Vista Correctional Complex in here Chaffee County. The word “Kairos” is Greek term that means “the opportune or appointed time for something.” The Kairos experience facilitates an intentional time where those that are incarcerated can experience the grace and calling of Jesus.

You, yes you reading this, are invited to come see what all the buzz has been about. You are invited to attend a Kairos closing ceremony on Sunday, May 7th in the afternoon. This ceremony is a powerful event, and you are invited to come and witness how the Kairos experience transforms the lives of everyone involved.

The closing happens inside the prison, and so to attend the closing you must be on the official list of people attending. To be on the list, the Department of Corrections runs a quick and easy background check on each person attending.

If you want to be a part of this experience, please get in contact with Pastor Calob or you can contact Lisa Hilbig at [email protected]

To learn more about Kairos, you can contact Pastor Calob, Lisa Hilbig, Cynthia and David Hearn, or Burrell Welton.

And, there are three main ways you can support the ministry of Kairos here in Chaffee County: 1. Volunteer! You can volunteer to be a part of a

team that puts on an entire weekend of Kairos inside the prison. It is a life changing experience.

2. By financial support. Each weekend costs $12,000 to put on. Checks may be made out to “ Kairos of Colorado “ and mailed to Kairos Prison Ministries, PO Box 302, Salida, 81201.

3. By signing the colored prayer strips available in Century Hall with your first name only and city. By doing this you commit to praying for Kairos. The names are then made into a Prayer Chain that is presented to the participants during a Kairos weekend and is a powerful reminder that they are not forgotten while they are incarcerated.

Hey, what about the Troop Boxes? You may have been asking yourselves this very question – are these boxes still being prepared and sent to overseas troops by a group in cooperation with the Salida Lutheran Church? You bet they are!

The demand for these has risen in recent weeks and we are now at 6 boxes per month. Items in these boxes are intended to bring just a bit of home to girls and guys stationed around the globe, as well as including small items that are useful and sometimes difficult to come by in remote areas.

Listed below are some suggestions for items needed and much appreciated by our troops. If you would like to participate in this project, boxes are packed at 9:00 a.m. the 4th Tuesday of every month and will be put together next on May 23rd at the basement of the Lutheran Church. If you want to donate items to be included, you can leave them in the red box marked Troop Boxes in Century Hall, on or before Sunday, May 21st. It Is important to remember that food items need to be individual sized packages as larger ones cannot be sent. All donations and help are greatly appreciated!

If you have any questions, please speak with Ginny Biglow, Ginny Cunningham and Barb Zechman. Thank You!

The program also includes Paul Simon’s “Love Me Like A Rock”, Broadway’s “Forty-Second Street” with tap dancers, Jan Justis and Tudi Pesch, “The Voice” by Celtic Woman, Fats Waller’s “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and the hilarious “The Pirate’s Life.” “The Silence and the Song”, “Heading Home” and “Come In From the Firefly Darkness” present a tapestry of Nature’s music that unites us in harmony and peace. Some of the songs will feature electric bass, trumpet and piccolo. Drummer extraordinaire, Kurt Wipperfurth, will be back for his fifth season.

Volunteers Needed for Spring

Several Opportunities! Cleaning!

In preparation for our busy summer activities, which include several food related events, such as the weekly Raft Guide Dinners and our Annual Pig Roast, we have scheduled two dates for deep cleaning in the kitchen and general spring cleaning around the church! In reference to the deep cleaning in the kitchen, some of the major tasks which have been identified are emptying, cleaning, and organizing drawers and cupboards, cleaning the ovens and large refrigerator, and cleaning out the grease trap under the sink. To facilitate all these activities and to avoid having too many workers in the kitchen at one time, we are designating the two dates of Wednesday, May 10th 1:00-3:00 (or longer if needed) and Saturday, May 13th 9:00 a.m., as work days in the kitchen.

Saturday, May 13th will also be the day for the annual Outside Church Cleanup, to spruce up the flower beds and parking lot areas. Please bring yard tools, gloves, etc., for this project. Other items will be added to the Spring Cleaning work day, as identified, and can happen on the Saturday Clean-Up Day. As you can see, we have a lot of work to do, but, as always, we will have a great time. Sign-up sheets will be available in Century Hall. Please let us know how you can help. All of these tasks are gender neutral! NOTE: The Men’s Breakfast will not meet in May, but are invited to gather to assist in the Spring Clean-Up Day on Saturday, May 13th! Thank you!!!

It will be a brief, yet efficient, planning meeting that will occur following the Sunday worship service and brief fellowship time and before the 2:00pm Noteables/You’ve Got Male Concert at the Presbyterian Church!

Everyone is invited. If you are not able to attend, please feel free to send Licia your feedback or any questions you may have to the office email: [email protected] or you can use her personal email: [email protected]. We would love to have as many people there as possible, so we hope you can make it. Thank you in advance for the many ways you support this amazing summer outreach program!
