Expanded NotationTo write a number in EXPANDED NOTATION, multiply each digit in the number by the value of it’s place.

Example:

3,269

The 3 is in the 1,000’s place. 3 * 1,000The 2 is in the 100’s place. 2 * 100The 6 is in the 10’s place. 6 * 10The 9 is in the 1’s place. 9 * 1

So, the EXPANDED NOTATION looks like this:

(3 * 1,000) + (2 * 100) + (6 * 10) + (9 * 1)

OR

3000 + 200 + 60 + 9

Let’s write 52,000 in scientific notation.

-Write the first number in the one’s place followed by a decimal and any other NON- ZERO numbers

- 5.2-Next, multiply that number by 10-5.2 x 10-Finally, count how many places you

moved the decimal. This is your power of ten exponent.

- 5.2 x 104

Try it by yourself!63,000 =

6.3 x 104

412,000 =4.12 x 105
