The Minerals Report Volume 5 – May 2015 IMII Quick Fact: As of May 2015, 52 students will have graduated from programs funded by IMII in Deschambault Lake, La Ronge, Pelican Narrows, Fort Qu’Appelle, and Nipawin. Local Students to Visit Mine School 140 students, ranging grade 8 to 12, are expected this year to visit the Mine School on May 12. Through the community career fair, the Mine School is offering students a chance to come to the school and participate in demonstrations of the mine equipment simulators. The simulators give them a taste of what it would be like to be an underground miner or operate surface equipment at a mine, providing an opportunity for students to explore the various options available in a mining career. The 29th Annual La Ronge and Area Career Fair & Hands on Careers Day is expecting 50 exhibitors from all over Saskatchewan, and over 300 students from the north to participate and engage. The trend in career events for high school students is to give them the opportunity to do things hands on that would be done in various careers. New to the event this year, youth who are pre- registered will learn about different trades and skills “hands on” with an instructor/mentor who will guide them through some basic skills training. Students will work with a workplace mentor in groups of four for about 15 minutes each per station before moving on to another activity. For more information about this event, please visit www.kcdc.ca/careerfairs. Introduction to Mining Students Graduating 15 students will graduate from the Introduction to Mining: Essential Skills Training program on May 14, 2015. This is the first program offered by Parkland College through funding from International Minerals Innovation Institute. Offered in Fort Qu’Appelle, nine female and six male students from seven First Nations Bands have taken advantage of this opportunity to learn mining skills using industry examples, tools, documents and situations while utilizing traditional Aboriginal teaching methods. This 22-week course is wrapping up with mine tours and a two-week work placement program. Potash- Corp, Mosaic and K+S Potash Canada mine sites in the area provided additional support to the program through tours, guest speakers, work placement, and donation of hard hats, boots, and coveralls. Six of the students have received employment offers with the mines after the training program concludes. Carlton Trail College is holding the next course in Punnichy, running March 23 to August 28. 16 students from the Kawacatoose, Day Star and Muskowekwan First Nations are registered for the program.

University of Saskatchewan Delivers Mining Engineering Options IMII and the College of Engineering remain committed to their vision of developing opportunities for students to receive training related to the minerals industry and being known for their industry relevance. The collaboration with IMII allows the college to take steps to ensure courses, equipment, faculty, and other resources are in place to support their minerals related initiatives. In December 2014, three mining engineering options in geological, chemical and mechanical disciplines, each with a minimum of six courses, were approved by the university and added to the 2015-16 course and program catalogue. Topics include mine ventilation, mine design, and drilling, blasting and excavating—all areas requested by industry and important to the graduates for a minerals engineering career. Approximately 60 students have participated in the program to date. With the support of IMII, the university has hired three new faculty members to deliver the mining engineering options, expanding the capacity of the university in teaching, research and development. IMII welcomes Dr. Paul Hughes, Department of Civil and Geological Engineering, Dr. Shafiq Alam, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and Dr. Travis Wiens, Department of Mechanical Engineering,
