Geographical Characteristics & climate
• Glaciers dropped fertile soil.
• Warm damp climate.• A good farming region.• It was warm in the
summer and cold in the winter.
• Both men and woman spent long hours in the field and at home.789
Reason for settlement
• Worship Freely.• James the Duke of
York gave William Penn more land because he didn’t want the land anymore.
• This land later became Delaware.
Religious Beliefs
• They were Catholics, Jews, Quakers, and Lutherans.
• They believed that all people could worship Freely.
• They could voice their opinions.
Government
• Worship Freely.• Colonists could elect an
assembly.• In England Penn was a
member of a religious group called the society of friends, or Quakers.
• In Delaware it was mostly Quakers.
Education• Only older men could go to
collage.• Parents had to teach their kids
how to read and write.• Most children in the Middle
colonies learned how to read & write but many colonies believed that it was most important for children to learn useful work skills
• Parents expected their children to learn a business or run the family farm instead of going to collage.
Agriculture/Manufacturing• Colonists hunted and trapped deer
and beaver.• They grew grain, rice, and
tobacco.• Colonists were free to make
decisions they believed would earn them the most money.
• They had a free market economy.• They also planted indigo which
was important to the Middle colonies because it could be made into a blue dye to color cloth.
• Some of the laborers in the Middle colonies were enslaved Africans they worked in laundries, as house servants or on the docks loading and unloading ships.
Settlements/Homes
• The people of the Middle colonies came from many lands.
• Colonists were German, Dutch, Scots-Irish, Scan-dinavian, and English.
• Many people came to Delaware because they didn’t agree with the church of England.
Towns/cities
• New Amsterdam (City)
• New Sweden (city) was the original name of Delaware.
• In 1776, the colony officially became Delaware.
• Wilmington
Other interesting facts to know
• The Middle colonies were a place where people from many different countries could live together and earn a good living.
• William Penn got along with the Indians when most other people fought with the Indians.
• There were 2,500 people in Delaware in 1700, and in 1770 there were 35,500 people in Delaware.
• Delaware was right next to Maryland.
