THE FIRST COMMANDMENT WITH A PROMISE EXODUS 20:12; EPHESIANS 6:1–3

INTRODUCTION: This section of Exodus is generally known as “The Ten ______________.” These duties are looked upon as a summary of the principles that are further expounded in the rest of the Law. Nine of these principles are incorporated into the New Testament, with only the Sabbath regulations not thus incorporated. These principles are further summarized in “The Two Greatest Commandments” (Matthew 22:34–40): to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and to love your neighbor as yourself. The importance of this instruction may be demonstrated in the following ways:

The first four of the instructions given in Exodus 20:1–17 relate to one’s proper respect for_______, while the last six regulate relationships among _________. Viewed in this way, the commandment, “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land the LORD your God is giving you,” stands in first place regarding one’s relationship to others (ahead of murder, adultery, etc.)!

When challenged by the Pharisees regarding his disciples’ lack of regard for the “traditions of the elders,” Jesus responded by using their disregard of this instruction to demonstrate how they “_________ the Law” (Matthew 15:1–9).

Our question is, “What does a child do to fulfill this obligation?”

Praising God and Thanking His People

May this serve as a means of praising God and thanking you as His people. God answered the multitude of prayers you brought into His presence on our behalf this week.

Following ten extremely tedious hours of examination and cross-examination, the Courts awarded to Car-olyn and myself the full and complete adoption rights for our precious grandson, Calhan. To all who came and sat, prayed and encouraged the entire time in the hallways, those who by legal counsel’s request, pro-vided such strength through their open testimony, those who privately prayed (one said they gave the entire night on the eve before praying), those who personally encouraged us so many times in so many ways — we say “Thank You” and will be eternally grateful for each of you. You are truly a special people.

We equally thank our daughter, who was called upon to make one of the most difficult decisions in her life. In this matter, which has also pulled at her heart these many months, she voluntarily agreed to the adoption. Her choice was motivated by a loving and unselfish decision to consider what was in the best in-terest of Calhan. That was not an easy or hastily made decision. Her decision also played a major role in heading off the potential devastating effects, had the final decision of the Court’s been different. We look forward to her continued presence and positive involvement within his and our lives. Please pray for her too.

We have seen the work of God’s hand in the various needs of so many through the years. This time it was “Front and Center” for us and He again has shown His presence, both through you and the intensity of your efforts, as well as His presence in the final outcome.

God has instructed us to “bear one another’s burdens” and to “weep with those that weep and rejoice with those that rejoice.” You have excelled in helping us bear this burden and have wept, prayed and en-couraged us so completely. We now ask you to join in the second phase of rejoicing with us, for the demon-stration of God’s loving involvement in those things that will affect the future of Calhan’s life.

We love you and again thank all of you! Please continue, as you have so faithfully done in the past, to help us encourage and train him in the ways of the Lord. You are also his family!!

CHASE’S COMMENTS...

Get On Track and Stay There

A man bought a new hunting dog. Eager to see how he would perform, he took him out to track a bear. No sooner had they gotten into the woods than the dog picked up the trail. Suddenly he stopped, sniffed the ground, and headed in a new direction. He had caught the scent of a deer that had crossed the bear’s path. A few moments later he halted again, this time smelling a raccoon that had crossed the path of the deer. Then a turkey, a rabbit, and so on, until finally the breathless hunter caught up with his dog, only to find him barking triumphantly down the hole of a field mouse.

One of the things for which Paul prayed was for the Church to be able to “approve the things that are excel-lent” (Phil. 1:10). He used a word here that was common among metal workers. As they tested the quality of metal, they “approved” in the metal that which was genuine. It is used in this passage of testing that which is good or evil. That is not always easy, but easy or not, it is the thing responsible Christians must do.

Our own business faith gets involved in this. We should test the excellency of our personal faith. Peter informed his readers that “for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials” but also told them how beneficial such would be. He concluded, that “your faith, which is more precious than all the gold in the world, may be proved gen-uine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed” (1 Pet. 1:6-7). The word “proved” here is the same as in Phil.1:10.

Often Christians start out with high resolve, putting the kingdom of God first in their lives, but their attention is soon diverted to things of lesser worth. One pursuit leads to another until they’ve strayed far from their original purpose. Let us do our best to put first things first. Stay on track and let nothing cause you to deviate from the straight and narrow way.

“Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you” (Prov. 4:25).

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matt. 6:33).
