Filled with all the fullness of God Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, I’m so grateful for our meaningful ministry together through the years. And faithful that God will be with each of us through the years to come. For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. 16I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your in-ner being with power through his Spirit, 17and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are be-ing rooted and grounded in love. 18I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:14-19)

As we part and you prepare to welcome Pastor Steve, it’s important to share the covenant document below that Steve, Laura, and myself participate in. A similar covenant is being signed by myself and Steve and we wanted you to see it. In the Rocky Mountain Conference, clergy are not members of a particular congregation, they are members of the Rocky Mountain Conference that serves as a covenant community. Clergy wrestle with the complexity of pastoral relationships and friendships with parishioners that require us to be sensitive and clear, especially after we have ended an appointment. Below are some of the behavior guidelines that the covenant community of clergy respects:

Make no disparaging remarks about the work or life style of a predecessor, successor or other ministers.

Upon leaving the appointment, including retirement, sever pastoral relationships with parish, recognizing that all future weddings, baptisms, communions, counseling, visitations, and funerals should be fulfilled by the successor pastor, unless an unusual situation exists and is approved by the successor pastor. To be clear: When a clergy receives a request from a former parishioner the clergy is to refer them, without comment to their current pastor.

For the health and welfare of the church, it is important that the former pastor and family, when they will be residing in the same community following serving as pastor, find another church to at-tend.

The former pastor shall avoid all conversation and communication with church members about the new pastor, as well as problems and issues regarding the former church. If approached, the former pastor needs to tactfully explain that ethics do not permit such a discussion.

Continued personal relationships with congregants do not assist in the health and welfare of the local church, and is therefore discouraged. Exceptions to any ongoing relationships and regular contact with for-mer parishioners need to be openly shared and negotiated with the current pastor.

Before leaving, the exiting pastor will clearly communicate from the pulpit and in writing that you will no

longer be able to function in any pastoral way with the congregation.

An exiting pastor is not to be present or participate in worship, events, or church groups for a minimum of

one year. Immediate family members are discouraged from this as well.

The currently appointed pastor is also expected to be sensitive, gracious and appropriately inclusive of for-

mer pastors.

We greatly appreciate you helping us to keep this covenant. Thank you.

Paul’s closing verses in chapter 3 wrap it up for me: Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, 21to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, for ever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21)

Words from Laura

MakingRoom: What to say (and not to say) to returning church members.

Summer is nearly here! And with it (this year) arrives a new senior pastor. As is typical with leadership transitions in any setting, curiosity will be piqued and there will be a high desire for people to come out and get to know the new pastor. We may see many new and/or returning members come out to meet Pastor Steve and get a sense of his leadership style, as well as his particular strengths & gifts.

We know, however, that the arrival of a new pastor isn’t the only reason people return to church. Folks withdraw from the rhythms of the church for many reasons, so we can encoun-ter a person returning to church after a lengthy absence at any time—not just with the arrival of a new pastor. So, the question is, how do we warmly receive people who may be seeking to re-engage with the church after being away for a while?

First and foremost it is done with great care and sensitivity. Our goal is to receive everyone warmly, no matter the reason for the absence. The opportunity for us is to extend grace, to make sure people know there is room for them at FUMCGJ, and that we are simply glad to see them.

Some things to keep in mind:

● Smile and offer a friendly handshake.

● Introduce or re-introduce yourself if it’s been a while.

● Say things like, “It’s really good to see you. Thanks for worshipping with us today.”

● Don’t make any reference, subtle or otherwise, to their absenteeism, rather simply share your delight in their presence now.

● Avoid saying anything that brings up guilt or puts the person on the spot directly or indirectly, such as “Missed you folks—where have you been?”

● Offer to take someone to the nursery or help them find the restrooms, etc.

● Wear nametags—this will not only refresh memories of past acquaintances, but will help newcomers become friends (& assist Pastor Steve & Kim to learn names of the FUMCGJ faith family).

Remember that it can be awkward being a new person, or returning to a place of worship you haven’t attended in a while. Let’s do all we can to make sure no one feels like an outsider. This is what it means to be the Body of Christ.

Greetings, new friends and fellow disciples of Jesus Christ,

Kim and I are very excited to be heading your way in a little under two weeks from the time of this writing! By the time you read this, we will have settled in in large part (I hope!) to our new home among you. We will be at 2515 Van Buren Ave. in the Colonial Heights subdivision. Feel free to swing by and say “Hi” sometime.

While we will have moved over to Grand Junction by the end of May, my pastoral responsibilities don’t officially start until July 1st. It is important during the month of June to al-low for some “down time” – what William Bridges in his book, Transitions: Making Sense of Life’s Changes, calls “the neutral zone” – between Rev. Blaine’s time of pastoral service coming to a close and mine starting up. The neutral zone is an opportunity for all of us to take a deep breath, to reflect upon the many good things that have characterized our lives in the past and the lessons learned, and to relax a bit before we all get busy with our new beginning. Kim and I will have to be back on the Front Range for some of that time for Annual Conference, but we also look forward to us-ing some of our neutral zone to explore our new home and just relish being on the Western Slope again. Very excited about that!

Our first opportunity to worship together will be July 5th.

We will be celebrating both Laura’s and my appointments to serve among you, along with communion – a most fitting way to begin a life of ministry and service together. I hope Fourth of July festivities don’t impact attendance at worship too much!

So, we look forward to our life with you and exploring what Christian discipleship looks like together: Taking Christ to the community and the community to Christ. I love that mission statement and am looking forward to being a part of it!

Blessings in Christ, – Pastor Steve

Memorial Reception Help

This volunteer ministry is to solicit help from anyone (men & women) who would like to be part of a group that provides food items for memorial dinners or receptions. Can you offer your service for a 2-month commitment as well as your Helping Hands & Caring Heart? If so, we are now putting our Memorial team(s) together for the 2015/2016 year starting in June. Sign up forms are located in the back of the church and can be returned in offering plate or to secretary’s box in work room. If you have additional questions, contact Carolyn at 242-4850 during office hours. We would be blessed to have you on a team.

JUNE Make-A-Change Offering is June 14—The Western Slope Center for Children (WSCC) is an accredited child advocacy center, serving Mesa County, Colorado. Our mission is to provide collaborative services to child sexual abuse victims and their fami-lies in a supportive environment that reduces trauma and promotes dignity, justice, and healing. We accomplish our mission by facilitating and coordinating the multiple agen-cies and individuals involved in the investigation and prosecution of complex child abuse cases including local law enforcement, human services, district attorneys, victim advo-cates, mental health professionals, and medical providers. We also provide direct, sup-portive services to child victims and their non-offending family members in a neutral, child and family friendly atmosphere. The services we provide include: forensic inter-views, on-site forensic medical examinations, on-site mental health services, referrals to other community agencies, victim advocacy, crisis counseling, Court support and prepa-ration, information and resources on healthy sexual development/abuse/and reporting procedures, and sexual abuse prevention training. The funds received from the First United Methodist Church Make A Change program will assist our Center in providing trauma focused counseling services to child victims and their families. Victims of sexual abuse, severe physical abuse, and witnesses to violence often need assistance with distorted thinking processes (self-blaming, feeling damaged, worthless, and alone). Trauma focused counseling helps victims identify their feelings about the trauma they have experienced in their lives and learn new coping skills and ways to express their feelings in an appropriate manner. The WSCC has an on-site mental health clinician with over 25 years of trauma related counseling experience in assisting victims and their families through the process of healing. These services are critical to the victims and families we serve on a daily basis.

A time for picnics and rest in the shade...

Lord, help me to rest awhile in the cooling shade of your presence.

Slow down my restless heart and fill me
