    McAuley DormExperiences Blackout

By Brent ScarposMERCI AD Staff Reporter

"I don't like it atall. It's unfairand inconvenient." This commentby freshman GingerMelby was inreaction to no electricity inMcAuley Hall dormitory onMonday.

According to Steve Seymourand Steve Borowski, ResidentAssistants in McAuley, thetirealarm went on around 2:30 p.m.,last Monday, September 19.

Seymour said, "It was anunusual alarm, louder thannor-mal." The students were im-mediately evacuated from thebuilding according to WilliamKennedy, director of student ser-vices; forty-five minuteslater, fafire truck came to the scene. Fur-ther investigation intothe incidentshowed that the sewage system inthe sub-basement had backed up .The flooding water shorted thefuses in the electrical transform er,leaving many hot wires. This wasthe reason for evacuation ofstudents. ,

Once the power was turned off,the hot wires were safe and itremoved thej danger. Church &Murdock, the 3 electrical contrac-tors working on campus, in-spected the incident and replaced

the faulty fuses. Once the powerwas turned back on, instead ofcorrecting the situation, the entireelectrical transformer short-circuited. It was determined thatthe transformer would have to bereplaced. The closest transformeravailable was in Greenville, PA,an d ,itl was estimated thatMcAuley Hall residents would bewithout power for about 30hours.fci Powerwas restored toMcAuleydormitory on T uesday, September20, at 7:30 p.m.

-During the initial incident, many students had commentsabout not having lights to studyby and hot water to shower with.

Freshman Matt Nesser lives inthe new basement rooms, rightabove the sub-basement. He said,"I can't study, there aren'tjanylights, and my whole system ismessed up." 'A L.

First floor resident, SueDeliosaid, "I'm all caught up with mywork until Friday, so it doesn'tmatter." She added,"It's kind offun." 1 I

Sophomore Dean Hall said,"It's better nowgthan duringfinals," referring to last winterwhen;there was a power failureone day before finals.

    Corry CenterLeases Building

By Martha Camp; MERCI AD Assistant EditorIn its third year of operation,

the CorryEnrichment Center hasleased a building for offices, alibrary and classrooms, accordingto John Nesbit, Assistant to thePresident. *

"It's doing fantastically well,"Nesbit said of the program, ex-plaining that the center had simp-ly outgrown its space.

Beginning in August, the CorryCenter signed a three-year leasewith the General Telephone Com-pany for building space. |

"It's a super building,"Nesbitcommented. Hej added that itlooks much like a college campus, because it is situated on the townpark. "*

Since the building was in goodcondition, the biggest expenditurethat the college incurred in the ac-quisition was the purchase ofcomputer equipment for $10,000.

Computer-based courses ,Nesbit explained, are the mostpopular of the offerings for theCenter's 117 students.

    "About four years ago, we

decided Corry was right foreducation," he explained., And,despite geographic problems,Mercy hurst began to offer collegecredit courses there. i. "We initially thought that

special interest would be the 'fun-ny button' for those peo-p l e . . . but they did n't wantspecial interest." Nesbit con-tinued, "so,Mercy hurst began tooffer regular courses."

"We don't offer a degreethere . . -. it's not a branch cam-pus," he explained. Nor does heforsee it becoming one.

"It's main feature and advan-tage is to act as a feeder," Nesbitsaid. 1

The Center gives students theopportunity to 'try on' college, taking courses while living athome. Even if students don'teventually continue on at Mer-cyhurst to obtain their degree,Nesbit said, Corry Center is stillserving a vital purpose.

"We're fulfilling what we're allabout," he concluded, "andthat's education." Drive Thru

    J Fs lose 20-7

    Lakers Block JCUFor 21-7 Victory

    By Greg YokoMERCIAD Sports Editor

For the first time in their youngthree year history, the Mercyhurstfootball team will head into theirthird contest undefeated.

The Lakers kept their recordunblemished by disposing of JohnCarroll University last Saturdayby a score of 21-7.

This week's hero was, amongothers, junior linebacker TimLatim er. A ll Latimer*, did w asmake 14 tackles, intercept apass, and block two punts that directlyled to a pair of Lake rtouchdowns.

Latimer was only one of theplayers to be praised by.CoachTony DeMeo.

"The offensive line, especiallyDon Erdley, and the defensivesecondary, namely Jim Sturm and

Scott Kelly, performed much bet-ter," DeMeo explained."Overall," DeMeo elaborated,

"we played well. We kept ourpenalties .down, 'threw the .ballmuch better, and hit the keypossession passes."

Concerning nex t week' s contestagainst St. Francis, the headcoach says that the Lakers will beconfronting an experienced andpowerful defense.

He said the Mercyhurst attack, however, is well established. TheBlue and Green will continue tothrow the ball and use the tripleoption.

An added boost for the Lakerswill be the return of senior runn-ing back John Moore and juniornoseguard Mike Hanes.vThe;*Hurst will,* however, bewithout the services of offensive

lineman Dave Armstrong, whobroke his fibula in last week'sgame. Rich DeVVitt is also doubt-ful for Saturday's contest.

    In junior varsity action, it wasGrove City over the Mercyhurstsquad, 20-7. Mercy hurst's RickPinksaw was designated the Lakerplayer of the game for hisefforts;

55 yards in eight carries. The Blue and Green wasbeaten

by the long pass three times in thedefeat. 1 *DeMeo said that thesecondary

needs work, but "the program isobviously progressing rathernicely." 1

The starting time for this Satur-day's game is set for 1:30. If youcan't make it to the game, you canhear the contest .from kickoff tofinish on WMCY Radio, 880 AM,beginning at 1:25.
