Mercyhurst .College is rapidlydeveloping into a small collegepower in the Held of athletics. Inlessf than? three Iyears, Lakerteams have become regarded asno longer a pushover but aproblem. From its inception, ourathletic program has strived tofield teams that would be com*petitive with any schoolresembling our size. From lameager beginning, Mercyhurstteams-have evolved into unitsthat are not only competitive butconsisten t winn ers. Hence, thename Mercyhurst is now beingrecognized not only as a good co educational institution but is also

by Dario Cipriania name synonymous i for highquality athletic team s. IOver the last three years, thename of - Mercyhurst has beencreeping across the country- Thisyear's L aker basketball team hasthe potential to make the nameM e r c y h u r s t V s t a m p e d ethroughout the nation. Not manycoaches have the chance to seefour starters returning from aball dub that won 16 out of 25games the previous year. What iseven stranger, is that three ofthem are sophomores. If this doesnot make a \ coach smile, howmany times does a coach havefive excellent players sitting on

(L.R.) Coach Fox, Steve Brandon, Captain J.C. Carter,AsstJCoach Bill Weborg.

DICK FO XATHL ETIC DIRECTO R-HEAD COACHDick Fox is beginning hissecond year as coach of theL akers. After ^compiling anoutstanding record as a highschool coach. Fox took over thereins of the infant Lakers lastseason and guided them to ahighly successful 16-9 record.O riginally from L inesyille, Pa. ,Fox set the; all-time LinesvilleHigh School scoring record of1040 points* in three year s ofcompetition. After playing a shortwhile; for Clarion State College,Fox served a stint in the Army.He. later played ball for Gannonand ^during the 1955-56 seasonaveraged 12 points per game? In1959, while in his senior year atGannon,^ Fox als o ^coached theKnight baseball team .I Mr.; Fox's first basketballcoaching assignment was atUnion CityjgHigh School. He

remained there for three yearsbefore becoming assistant coachat Gannon.?In September 1963,Fox became head coach at CorryHigh i School. At Corry; Foxproduced, the first winning teamm 24 years when his 196647Beavers finished 14-7. { ~iDuring the 1967-68 basketballseason, Fox guided*CathedralPrep to the PCIAA State Class AChampionship. He repeated thisfeat in 1970 when he once againcoached a Cathedral Prep teamto the State Championship.Mr. Fox displayed the qualityof |h is coaching ability lastseason. He started from* scratchand molded a very respectable, winning team. With the additionalexperience that he gained as afirst year college coach, thefortunes of this year's basketballteam appear to be resting in goodhands.

his bench, eager to get their licksin, who were also on that i firstyear team. And finally, how manytimes does a coach have a chanceto recruit six other high-calibreplayers and mix them with thenine others mentioned above?Answers-not J often. "Yet t Lakercoach, Dick Fox holds all thecards, and he is sm iling. When the L akers take the flooragainst Edinboro tomorrowevening, they will display height, quickness, good shooting, astrong I defense, and above all, experience. Returning from lastyear's team are starters MikeEmick, Steve Albert, Carl Jonesand J. C. Carter. Also returningwill be Dave Wieczorek, JeffMcConnell, Steve Brandon,Danny Bu kowsk i, and* JimMahoney. The newcomers will beJeff Davern, Curtis Hixon, JesseCampbell, Bryant Jacobs, BobRepko and John Chojnacki. T heseplayers have the tools necessaryfor success. They also have anexcellent coaching staff workingwith them. About the only thingthat they are not sure of having issupport from} the MercyhurstCommunity, j

At I the beginning . of thebasketball season last year, thesupport for the L akers wasfantastic. As the year progressedthis support died, and by the endof the year, it was almost non-ex istant. What happened? Whoknows? Perhaps the old apathybug was on the loose. But thatwas last season. Tomorrowevening there is another newbeginning. Not only the Mercyhurst L akers of 72-73 , but theMercyhurst Community '72-73.L et's go people. This is the yea r.There is no reason in the worldwhy f800 MC Community members could not belat that gametomorrow night. Let's get on theband wagon. The team needs yoursupport. Let's stam p out thatapathy bug forever.

    HURST HAS {ABUNDANCEO F L O CAL TALENTby Joe Mattis, S I D .

When Dick Fox became thefirst* Athletic Director andBasketball Coach at MercyhurstCollege a year ago, he knew therewas one situation concerning localhigh school players that he wouldlike to remedy. As a high schoolcoach in the area for 11 years, thelast four of which were in Erieitself, Fox saw too many top areaplayers going out of town to playtheir college basketball.A look at the L akers roster forthe 1972-73 season shows he hasdone something about tit. Of 15players on the team, six of themare from Erie and three othersare from theErie area. Holdovers from his squad thatposted a 16-9 record a ye ar agoare senior J.C. Carter of ErieStrong';V incent, junior DaveWieczorek of Erie 1 CathedralPrep, * and sophomores SteveBrandon of Erie McDowell, DanBukowski of Erie? CathedralPrep, Mike Emick of O il CityHigh and Jim Mahoney of NoraEast High, f sr M feThen when Fox announced hisfreshmen recruits f fort the upcoming" year there was BooRepko, another! Cathedral Prepproduct, John Chojnacki, whoplayed locally for TechMemorial, and Jeff Davern, astandout for jj Meadville \ High ayea r ago.?: $ ]L . t'There are too many goodbasketball'players in area highschools that could help us."commented F ox. "In the past, forsome reason or another;, they hadbeen choosing to attend and playball for colleges where it wouldbe difficult for their families andfriends to see them regularly.

"If*we can get these boys toattend Mercyhurst, then thepeople who have followed theirplaying days at the high schoollevel can also watch mem perform for the L akers," continuedFox. "There is no doubt in mymind that*:these3local boys canhelp us have a winning basketballprogram here at Mercyhurst, butMercyhurst can also help theboys obtain * a high qualityeducation." f-

VARSITY < 72 c73STEVE ALBERT |Big ISteve was the team'sleading rebounder last season andsecond leading scorer. He has anexcellent outside shot and moveswell on the inside. One year'sexperience in college ball hasmatured Steve into a smartplayer. His only drawback is thestrength of his knees. JSTEVE BRANDON*One of the old men on the club,Buzz's leadership is definitely anasset. Although not blessed withtremendous ability, Steve'shustle and desire make him favery effective ballplayer.DAN BUKOWSKI JDanny is well schooled to DickFox's style of basketball. This ishis fourth season with the coach.Dan is valuable*coming off thebench. He has a good outsideshot, and | plays an aggressiveman-to-man defense.

    J. C. CARTER ICaptain Carter;'is the {teamleader. He is probably ithe mostconsistent Laker performer. Lastseason Jay was leading scorer(20.6 points per game) and secondleading |? rebounder. There is , present! on ithiscampus, a work force co mprisedof six young ladies clad in saddleshoes, blue knee socks, whitebody shirt s, with a tiny skirt andvest combination boasting theLaker "M". i f I 4Our CHEERLEADERS\ formthe nucleus of Mercyhu rs t ' sschool spirit with then* neverending dedi cat io n! and enthusiasm I when bonded together, strike out to destroy apathy andc rea t e j a sense? of harm onyamongst th e fans. ^ I ^ * ? BI recently had the pleasure ofinterviewing each of th ese coedsindividually and was quite impressed with their attitudes andfrankness to my questions. Thesegirls d o care about t he college (inboth academics and athletics), inyou, the Mercyhurst students andth e community's view J of th isinstitution and its inhabitants. They do much m ore th an merelystand in front of th e crowd yelling"go team, go!" They give approximately eight hours a week(more if need be) of their time, face vast amounts of criticism toimprove their performance andpurchase most of their I ownequipment (this should excite theBoard of Trustees!) plus workthe entire year on an almost invisible budget of $300 (this couldmake for an interesting road tripto Waterford and back !).But withstanding these fewannoyances fyou'll find theseyoung women proud to bear thet i t l e of a " Mercyhurs tC heerleader", for avariety ofreasons of which they werewilling to share with me.So now let me introduce to you,the Mercyhurst community, our1972-73 cheerleading squad::..-: First, the captain, MarianneJacobs hailing from Rochester,New York, where she spent herentire high school years as ac h e e r l e a d e r . r ' J a k e " is aSociology m a jo r and looks forward to working with ch ildren ineither an orphanage or adoptionagency. She's an active memberof R.U.S. and SA C and would liketo see adefinite changeful theschoo l ' s a t t i t u de -e spec ia l lyconcerning th e apath y segment ofcampus life. Mary Ann feelsthere's a "lot of talk, b ut no action" around here, admittingt hough! basketball^has t he mostsupport but it's really not strongenough! She's out to help build abetter unity between sports andthe campus community. Whenquestioned for a definite meaningin cheerleading she retorted: "ffeel it'sga cheerleader's role to

alleviate some ofour campusapathy. I enjoy the sport ofpt-itwas a I challenge to s t a r tsomething that never existed onthis campus.? Jake has an optimistic outloo k for th e rest of theyear, "the schoo l h as developed abe t ter soc ia l l i fe -i t 's morecommuni ty-or ien ted now thanever before!* The campus activities have brought Mercyhursttogether as a whole bo dy. I thinkwe'll see a decline in apathy hereby the end of th e year.*

Second, ranking as co-captain,is Chris Dodd also a member ofthe Junior class;from Hornell,New**| Yo rk, 1majoringr inElementary- Education with hermain emphasis leaning towardSpecial | Education. One of thebusiest cheerleaders, Chris isactive in such organizations asthe Council forExcept ionalChildren, R.U.S., working in theAdmissions Office and is an R A inBaldwin Hall. Chris feels Mercyhurst is a "fantastic" schoolbut has a poor at t i tude towardssports. S h e feels th is is a sad stateof affairs considering the wide, long range programs offered hereat Mercyhurst. "I can't believeth e disinterest--even in the girls'pro gram, when such an avid pa rtof school life is spor ts! ' ' Chris h asbeen a cheerleader since the 6 thgrade, "it has become an important part of my life-keeps mein shape. I'm an avid sports fanand*feel cheerleading is an important segment of sports." Shewent further to explain her ro le-'Tm? not someo ne J standing |infront of t he fans just screaming~Ishould be considered a guide toarouse support forour p teamduring the games. Iget arealsense of involvement which I feelI c a n share with the spectato r." I

Thirdly, I found whomfl wouldconsider probably theji mos t"outspoken" gal ofthe entiresquad, w ho says exactly what sh efeels to m ake her point clear andconcise. Mary Needham, ofAllison Park, Pa., is also a secondyear veteran in th e ch eerleadingranks. Elementary! Educa t ionwith 1 her main concentration inSpecia l Educa t ion , compriseMary's major course of study. She also finds herself involved inth e Council? for Except ionalC hi ldren and SA C ! Being aveteran, I asked Mary what roleshe felt she played during agame. 'T m out there to get thefans psyched-bu t they thinkwe're o u t there for a show! We'reout there to "help ", not to be thesole thing!" I elaborated abit

    (tm:

further and asked what kind ofreaction th ey received--"The onlytime you get a reaction from thecrowd is when they're*drunk!"Mary feels the cheerleadersshould get mo re recognition as aworking force, who reallytenjoyand take pride in what they do,for th e college and themselves. |Rounding out the Junior classcheerleaders is 'T.R." Clark.Tiny Renee" Clark stands only5 ' tall, saddle shoes and all, buthas th e enthusiasm and charismaof a real pro even though th is willbe her first year ever as.? acheerleader! I Bev Welsh came to Mercyhurstwith ft wo | years. c heer 1eadingexperience behind her fromFoxboro High School, Foxboro,Mass., where she served as thecaptain of her squad. Bev is asophomore Sociology major andhopes to work in some aspect ofthis field upon graduation. Bev.believes "involvement" is th e keyto alleviating th e schoo l's apath y."Most students see school spiritas something corny, but I feel ifmore peo ple in this schoo l wouldget involved, not just fin varsityspor ts bu t a lso in t ramurals ,student government,{class offices, choir, J e t c . , we wouldn'thave the time to even think of theword apath y." Bev herself is anactive member in R.U.S. as wellas cheerleading. jgB B8BK*Last, but not least, we have anErie native-Kathy Jurkiewicz-also a sophomore, who attendedSt. Benedict's Academy and wasa four year veteran on theircheerleading squad. g K a t h y ,another Elementary $ Education-Special Education major, hopesthe student body will have aserious attitude change and notconsider the cheerleadingprogram a big joke. Kathy feelsone sho uld participate Jin somearea o ther than purely anacademic life tofulfill the"whole" college experience."Cheerleading makes me feelI'm apartj of the team eventhough I'm not on the court, Iguess it's th e best way to expressmy spirit, and I love it!'ui
