By Jen H arwellNews editorTracy Fischer, junior, running for president, and her runningmate for vice president, junior Billy Byrnes, have targetedmany issues on campus which they would like to focus on inthe 2000-01 school year. i - *| In last week's issue of The Merciad, students were askedin the Campus Question whethera shuttle service Would beneeded and used. An overwhelming amount ofstudents felta shuttle service would be a valuable asset to the campus, and wo uld broaden the scope of student activities.* Fischerand Byrnes also feel a sh uttle is important for destinationssuch as the Millcreek Mall, Tinseltown, grocery stores, Erieairport, community service centers, PresqueIsle and StateStreet ; ^A game room would also prove to be an appealing assetto students on campus. Fischerand Byrnes want an enter-tainment room where students can hangout, play pool, pingpong or other arcade games. Options forthis game room arethe Great Room of the student union or the green room ofthePAC. I } ;Parking is a necessity for those living on and off campus. Fischerand Byrnes wishto reexamine how parking could be better maximized and becomemore efficient, possibly with parking on both sides of Briggs Avenue, limited event parking for thepublic and reevaluating how parking passesare distributed.}Late night activity is on the agenda as well. Friday and Saturday nights would befilled with comedians, bands, karaoke, open mic, dances and movies. The Rec Center also is targeted as a place Fischer and Byrnes would like toimprove, with new machines for weight lifting and cardiovascular workout, as well asaerobics, kick boxing, self-defense, personal training and more intramural sports. Finally, to ensure students are aware of what the week's happenings will be, Fischerand Byrnes pledge to create an events' hotline where students can call and get the latestinformation regarding MSG and SAC information.

One more week of active campaigning remainsbefore the final election, and candidates are makingtheir final pleas to represent the Mercyhurst studentbody. fThe primary elections narrowed down the tworemaining platforms of Tracy Fischer/Billy Byrnes, and Perry Wood/Frank Kostik. Both teams have ,presented their two different areas of concerns in apresidential platform, and back up what they feel areimportant issues with their experience.Running for treasurer isjunior, MelanieMcClaskey, sophomore,StaceyTate and freshman,.]John Johnson. f ~ j? * *Bidding for the secretary position are LindsayChristopher, junior, and Carlton Morgan, sopho-more, t 5The deb ate between the remaining platforms willtake place tonight at 8 p.m. in the Great Room.General elections will be held April 5(11 am.-4p.m.and 6-8:30 p.m.) and 6 (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) in thestudent union.

Presidential hopeful Perry Wood, and his running mKostik are focusing on many issues, including thoseMSG itself to strengthen their chances of becomingMercyhurst Student Government presidentand vice pWood and Kostik, both juniors, feel much improcould be made to MSG that would affect students pHigh on their list of concerns is to improve communbetween students and the members of MSG.* An annual fee of $38per term is paid to the MSSAC fund. Wood and Kostik would like tosee this mspent responsibly, with activitiesand events appealibroader range of constituents.Another area of their platform is to reevaluate whexists, and how it can get more students involved, thlowering the amount of student dissatisfaction. *Wood and Kostik wish to reinventMSG's structumaking sure things get done at the committee level, debate should begin in a specializedcommitteecreatthe specific purpose of dealing withthe issue at handsay. Discovery of information and resolutions shoulshape at this level before debate on the MSGfloor.would allow com mitteemembers to provide represewith the information they need to make an informed decision.Wood and Kostik feel tha t tasks and dates of review need to be established foproject that MSG undertakes. Therightdirection and the pressure of a deadlinefoster a sense of responsibility in the project leaders.'; Mf '. y& v &Finally, Wood and Kostik are striving for a year ofdynamic leadership. They felethargic and unclear executive board gets anorganization nowhere fast. Clearvisiogoals are needed from the beginning, and should be followed through with consisteWood and Kostik believe that macromanagement of the MSG process lets the cits members lourish.Check out their Web site at .Page one photos by Gerrit Shuffstall/Merciad photo

THE BAD ... The Mercyhurst lacro sse team couldn't have asked for a biggercrowd Saturday forits game aga inst the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals atTullio Field. Unfortunately, for as much fan support as the teamreceived, it was the most untasteful display for Mercyhurst. Thefanswere rude and o bnoxious. Instead of cheering on their team, theydemoralized the opposing team. That's thewrong kind of schoolspirit I / > In li ght of the recent changes for next year's campus housing, many people are wondering why there has been such a delay in the

sign-ups. There wilt be plenty o f opportunities for students to askquestions at this week's student forum Unfortunately, the womanbehind many of thechanges, Laura Zirkle, will not be present "Sorry, she doesn't live here anymore." That seems to be the linemost commonly used by students for the annoying telemarketers thatare persistently calling our dorms and apartments. We would be foolish notto have these two candidates inoffice.Tracy is currently the vicepresident of student governm entShe was also on student govern-ment last year. In light of that fact, it issomewhat easy to see why Americans can become disillu-sioned with politics and politi-cians. Add the role of religion inthe political realm, and on e canreach a level of volatility thatbegs apathy. What role doesreligion, and more importantly, the "religious'* individual, playin the election process?

TJie Catholic bishops havewritten extensively on what theycall "political responsibility'* inthe face of tremendous apathy onthe part of the American publicwhen it comes to politics.
