NOVEMBER 21,1985 THE MERCIAD POut f indsMWho exactly is the band OneOutta Place? They are thenewest talent to come fromMercyhurst. With Darryl Lewison lead vocals, Pete November

on drums, Eric Christainsenon keyboards, Rob Heutscheon guitar, and Hans Hetz onthe bass, One Outta Place Is aunique group that playstogether for the fun of It.One Outta Place got theirstart just like J most othergroups. November, Heutsche, and Hetz brought their in-struments to school, heardabout each other and got a jamsession started with Darryl do-

From there theband just "clicked" and theyhave been playing togethersince then. The band practices nights inthe Montgomery Room of theHammermill Library after thelibrary closes down for 3theevening. These practices even-tually led to their first "gig"playing a dance for the Specialeducat ion Department 'sdance which benefited mental-ly retarded children. The bandthen began playing off and ondown at Shennanigans.V',': One 8 Outta Place can beseen on the Mercyhurst cam-pus Feb. 15 when they willopen for the band October In a" m i n i | concert to besponcered by S.A.C. The bandmembers, who are all excitedabout their forthcoming con-cert, plan on getting the au-dience up and dancing. The band hopes thatthis concert will give themsought after recognition andthe^chance^Jo otherVgigs"like it. After the concert theywould like to continue playingat bars, hopefully workingtheir way out of Erie at somepoint. *Perhaps the band's successis due mainly to the fact that

No excusesDead on the lineU Well, here It is, DEADLINE HOUR. Never has such an ap-propriate word been spoken - DEADIine. fI have a di ff icul t t ime trying to come up with a topic. To me,that is one of the worst parts of this job - deciding on editorialtopics. | I ;;Now there are not too many excuses I can use this week, I hadthe whole staff working on their art icles for this week before weleft for Thanksgiving break. (Perhaps I was thankful that I don'twork for myself so I could enjoy break - even though I didmanage to ruin my vacation by catching a nasty cough.)Choosing the r ight topic has real ly thrown me. I started aboutsix di fferent editorials. Most of them were laced with m essagesabout the wonderfulness of Christmast Let's face it, there areonly so many sugary things one can say about Christmas. (It ismy favori te hol iday, in case you're interested. The Christmasseason has gotten better since m y nephew has been around so Inow have someone w ith whom I can be "chi ld ish". That and run-ning around the house trying out al l his fun toys whi le I havematured my way up to getting socks and underwear for theyuletid e season.) f ?But seriously, there's a certain pressure to writing thesewords of wisdom for page 4. I would like to believe that mostpeople at least scan the editorial of the week. This is primespace and cannot be taken lightly. With 2,100 copies of mywords (or our words when Betsy chips in her thoughts) cir-culated, editorials cannot be 'blown off" as easy as some peoplecan breeze through an essay that, at best, only one teacher willever read. ^Also, there's no room for those maladies like "writer's block".I get that weekly and it hits me like a brick wall. I can't ask for an"extension" or " just another day" and hold the newspaper upwhi le I search for the right editorial or just try and "get myselftogether". I operate on the "du e yesterday" calendar of l i fe.But in all honesty, there is a certain amount of satisfaction inthe frustration. Producing something of this magnitude everyweek has given everyone on the staff a chance to grow and learnnew thing s. (Which is one of the basics of college.) Why just thisweek I learned what trimetrogon means. Most of us are working on the newspaper in relation to our ma-jors, but I think everyone does it because it's stil l fun and hasvalue to them. Gathering a diverse group together every weekhas its advantages. We each bring different personalities, dif-ferent backgrounds and different interests to the office. And weall can share in writer 's block together. And that's what makesthe differen ce in being part of a group, sharing the Joys and thefrustrations together. *My appreciation for all the work done isn't always evident, butit is always there. Without being surrounded by a sl ightly offbeatgroup like "The Merciad staff, l ife would certainly be boringand less colorf ul . IThe student body is also part of The Merciad staff. Withoutthem, we would have eight blank sheets of paper weekly.[ So, to f inish my rambl ing and put the newspaper "to bed"(journalistic lingo), I just want to wish everyone a great holidayseason and a relaxing break. I know I'll have fun - my nephew isgetting some great stuff for Christmas!MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR
