Let’s face it, 2016 was a society demolition site. But, on the bright side, 2017 is here! New year, new you! Yeah, but not for some people. People are making sly and cruel jokes on the internet about other people, themselves, and society itself. Sure, we all look forward to new movies, phones, technology, apps, and other things. Is it really worth checking your phone everyday for a random up- date? In my opinion, I hope 2017 will not be another 365 days of torture on social media. Everyone posts vulgar comments about someone/something for no reason. To make matters worse, kids these days cuss, wear $300 clothes, listen to music they don’t want to listen to, follow crowds, and do other things that are just not right, just to look cool. I believe that our society is ripped apart, and being yourself isn’t happening.

2017 Resolution for Students

By: Jasmine M.

1. Break a bad habit 2. Learn a new skill 3. Do a good deed

4. Read new books

5. Get more organized

6. Have more patience

7. Trust your heart 8. Connect with new people

9. Grow and help others grow

10. Be yourself As you know many people write their New Year’s Resolution but never seem to stick to their resolu-tions. Facts state that only 8% of people stick to their New Year’s resolution. This is usually be-cause they lack of confidence or lack of self-improvement. Many people use the saying “I'm too busy“ when really they are just trying to slack off. Many people like to “keep it simple“ no hard work to do there I'm guessing. I think making a shorter resolution list will help people get to their goals. If you have a goal don't forget to try to achieve it. Yes!, it will take hard work, but it’s worth it in the end. If you want to change you will have to want it. It is not just given.

Weird January Holidays

By: Jamie S.

There are many holidays in January. Some are normal, some are celebrated in different areas of the world, and some are just straight up weird. National Z Day is on January 1st. The first day of the New Year is a perfect day to cele-brate all things that start with the last letter of the alphabet! Run it up a Flagpole and See If Anyone Salutes It is on January 2nd. Putting new ideas and ventures to the test, just like a flag would have respect by people saluting it. The Festival of Sleep Day was created for people that would like to get some "shut eye" and relaxation after the holidays. Nature lovers, bird lovers and bird watchers across the country annually recognize National Bird Day. National Old Rock Day is used to celebrate old rocks and fossils. People Day is here to celebrate the leaders of the strange and unusual, those who refuse to succumb to the world’s idea of what is normal and sane. Peculiar People Day is here to celebrate the leaders of the strange and unusual, those who refuse to succumb to the world’s idea of what is normal and sane.

The History of New Years

By: Julia T.

The first time New Year's was celebrated was in 45 B.C. Julius Caesar decided that the Roman calendar needed improvement. While doing this, he decided to get help from an Alexandrian astronomer named Sosigenes. He decided to make the New Year begin on January 1st, add 4 months to February every year, and change the month Quintilis to Julius (July) and Sextilis to Augustus (August).

Bradley vs Bailey Home Basketball Game

By: Brooke N.

Sadly our first home game didn’t go as well as it could have with the girls having a score of 55-25. Our first home game was against Bailey middle school. Nevaeh C. had a very good game scoring most of our points. The team played well but not well enough to pull off the win. The girls will be prac-ticing and playing hard and will be ready to redeem themselves at the next Bailey game, at Bailey, on January 19th. Our Lady Mavericks will be ready to come and take the win!

The boys game also had a dev-astating outcome for our first home game with a score of 48-36. We started out very strong but just didn’t have a enough to get the win for our first home game against Bailey. Derek and Sean had good games scoring a lot of our points. Make sure you come out and support us hopefully take the win against Bailey on January 19th.

How to Achieve Your New Year's Resolution

By: Or A.

Keep yourself motivated in 2017. Make sure to limit yourself to a New Year’s Resolution that you think is achievable. Be specific as well, don’t be general. Have a specific goal that you will try to make in 2017. Make a plan; this way you will be more likely to achieve your goal. Finally, keep motivated and treat yourself.

Exciting events of 2017

By: Haley F.

With January comes the new year. With a new year, there comes new and exciting things. 2017 is not going to disappoint. Now, we’re one year closer to 2020. Let’s go, Kanye! Of course, the new year also comes with all the insignificant people who tweet, update their status, or find some other way to put garbage out on the Internet, “Happy 2017th birthday Earth!!” No. Just stop. Earth is not 2017 years old. Speaking of technology, 2017 is coming with a wave of new movies. Insidious Chapter 4, Fast and Furious 8 (A.K.A, The Fate of The Furious), World War Z 2, Pitch Perfect 3, and a bunch more super awesome sounding sequels. My expectations are high along with the number of broken New year resolutions that are bound to happen. We might as well abandon it all together. I’ve never heard of anyone actually sticking to it. Especially when you say you’re going to get in shape or be nicer. Never happens. Why don’t you be more realis-tic and bet on procrastinating or pretending to have been asleep when you just didn’t want to text them back? Yeah, we all do that. 2017 is going to be packed with a load of new internet trends too. I doubt there will be anything as good as dabbing or water bottle flipping but you never know. Let’s see what you’ve got 2017.

How New Year’s Eve The Holiday Started

By: Lily R.

Did you know that new year has not always been celebrated on January firstR. People have been celebrating the start of each new year for over 4 millennia. Today most new year festivals start on December 30th or January 1st. People do a lot on New Years: they watch the ball drop, have parties and many more things. In the early roman time they used to have 10 months not 12, but with 364 days not 365. Everyone always be-lieved that the New Year will always come. Caesar insisted that on January 1st the new year. they honor some people. That was in the reform time so a long time ago.

January DIYs

By Caroline H.

Let’s start the new year off with some fun DIYs to brighten up the winter days... 3D Snowflakes

You will need paper, scissors, tape, and a stapler. 1.Cut the paper into a square with as much precision as possible. 2. Fold the square diagonally in half, so you have a triangle, and then in half again, so you have a small triangle. 3. Starting at the folded side, cut almost all the way across the triangle to make a slit in the paper. Repeat this step all the way down the triangle. 4. Now unfold the triangle. It should be a square with small cuts in it. 5. Take the innermost little slits of paper and fold them across each other and tape it. 6. Now flip the square over and do the same. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until there are no more cuts. 7. Repeat steps 1-5 until you have 6 of the shapes. 8. Take the tip of 2 of the shapes and staple them together. Repeat until you are finished. Now hang your beautiful snowflake for all to see! Snow globe

You will need a mason jar, water OR fake snow (available at any craft store), hot glue, and any object you want to put inside the snow globe

1.Glue the object to the inside of the lid. Make sure it’s secure. 2. Fill the jar with the water/fake snow. 3. Add glue on the sides of the inside of the lid so the jar will stay shut when you close it. 4. Close the jar tightly and turn it over. You now have a cute snow globe!

A Year To Get Over Negative Thinking

By: Lucas B.

Do you need to stop nega-tive thinking and start living a happy life for your new year’s resolution? Here’s the answer to the question you have been asking yourself, this is the year you make it all stop and learn how to control it. Every person has ambition for the life of a cartoon character, always making dreadful events into more satisfying ones, but sometimes reality hits us in the face with negative thoughts or feelings; this can make your stress level rise. “Some people are more prone to negative thoughts than othersR it could either be genetic or from a childhood experiences]” said Judith Beck a psychologist from Bala Cynwyd, Pa. According to a study in 2013 children usually get these thoughts because they are getting bul-lied, experienced extreme trauma, or abuse. Humans are made to build mentally from negative thoughts or events and learn from the positive ones. Scientists have proven a happy life by making a list of all the positive events and accomplishments you have achieved with a list of reasons why and how you accomplished them. If negativity con-tinues, stop and breathe deeply, clear your mind from all your thoughts and surroundings. Should it continue so much that you become anx-ious you may want to see a professional and/or go to the doctor if necessary. Sources of research: https://goo.gl/scz7nm

The Ball Drop

By: Christa N.

The Times Square Ball is a time ball located in New York City's Times Square. Located on the roof of One Times Square, the ball is a prominent part of a New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square commonly referred to as the ball drop, where the ball descends 141 ft. in 1 minute down a specially designed flagpole, beginning at 11:59:00 p.m. and resting at midnight to signal the start of the new year. In recent years, the festivities have been preceded by live entertainment, including performances by musicians. The event was first organized by Adolph Ochs, owner of The New York Times newspaper, as a successor to a series of New Year's Eve fireworks displays he held at the building to promote its status as the new headquarters of the NY Times, while the ball itself was de-signed by Art Kraft Strauss. First held on December 31, 1907 to welcome 1908, the ball drop has been held annually, except in 1942 and 1943 in observance of wartime blackouts. The ball's design has also been updated over the years to reflect improvements in lighting technology. The original design was made from wood and iron and lit with 100 incandescent light bulbs, while its current sta-tus features a computerized LED lighting system and an outer surface consisting of triangle-shaped crystal panels. Since 2009, the current ball has been displayed on top of the building year-round, while the original, smaller version, of the current ball that was used in 2008 is on display at Times Square's visitor center. The event is organized by the Times Square Alliance and Countdown Enter-tainment, a company led by Jeff Strauss, and is among the most notable New Year's celebrations internationally. It is attended by at least 2 million spectators yearly, and is nationally televised as part of New Year's Eve specials broadcast by a number of networks and cable channels. The signifi-cance of the Times Square ball drop has inspired similar drops at other local New Year's Eve events across the country, creating models of the ball drop.
