The Marist Mail Weekly news from The Marist Catholic Primary School For week beginning 23 rd September 2019 Dear Parents, Education Sunday The Holy Father has said “Good education plants seeds when we are young, and these continue to bear fruit throughout life” which is particularly apt given that this has been our first full week as a complete community: our youngest children have joined us full-time and are settling beautifully to school life. Please do join us for Mass in the Parish at 9.15am as we mark Education Sunday. Children should be in full school uniform as they proudly represent our school. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there. Safeguarding Children will sometimes mention that they have accessed material online that we would consider to be inappropriate. Often, the focus can be on the reactive measures rather than the proactive measures, an outline of which follows. In each classroom we have a recognition board. Names are placed onto the board when desired behaviour has been recognised and there is a different behaviour objective each week. This helps us to ‘train’ all the children to work together as a class. Housepoints are given for good work, good ‘Marist Manners’ and exceptionally good behaviour. Children are sometimes asked to show their books or an individual piece of work to me and will get a Headteacher Award sticker. Work of the week and Big Writes are displayed in the hall during Monday worship. When there is something particularly positive to share, teachers may make a phone call home. Please celebrate any recognition of good behaviour with your child – it supports the work we are doing to maintain the great start we have had to term. Communication with Class Teachers As a school, we operate an ‘open door’ policy and teachers are available for quick catch ups with parents at the end of every day. This is generally sufficient to deal with small concerns and minor incidents that may occur. In our experience, a brief face to face conversation is often the quickest way to resolve a problem. Sometimes, parents or teachers may want to instigate a slightly longer chat at the end of the day and you may be invited into the classroom for a more individual conversation. Where this is not possible, for example, if your child attends extended schools, teachers may arrange a convenient time to meet via the school office. On rare occasions it may be necessary to raise a concern over email. When this is the case, please adhere to office hours, Monday to Friday only. Bear in mind that teaching staff are unavailable to email back immediately, as they are in class and often have meetings after school, so please allow a reasonable time for your response. With more complex issues, you may wish to request an appointment, which can be done over email or by contacting the school office. The school office is the main port of call to share information about absences, lateness and changes to pick up routines. I am sure you will appreciate that a teacher’s main job is to teach, and to plan and prepare to teach again the next day so it really is in the interests of all our children that communication between parents and teachers is managed efficiently. Thank you to the vast majority of our parents who adhere to our guidelines, we really appreciate working in partnership with you. Please see Twitter for some lovely photographs of this week at school. https://twitter.com/TheMarist_WB With every blessing, Kate Licence

Dear Parents,

Education Sunday The Holy Father has said “Good education plants seeds when we are young, and these continue to bear fruit throughout life” which is particularly apt given that this has been our first full week as a complete community: our youngest children have joined us full-time and are settling beautifully to school life. Please do join us for Mass in the Parish at 9.15am as we mark Education Sunday. Children should be in full school uniform as they proudly represent our school. The Daily Mile Following the successful launch of The Daily Mile at The Marist School last year, we would like to involve the whole school community in a new Daily Mile initiative beginning next week. The sports team would like to invite you to run or jog around the school field on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 8.30 - 8.40 am. Marist children will be able to earn one house point each time they do this. They can also

earn an extra house point if their parent or carer joins in too! A member of the sports team will be on hand to encourage participants and give out house points. There is no need for any change of clothes or uniform, and the children will be able to access school at the usual time of 8.40am. We look forward to seeing you there!

Come on, give it a go!

PE Sports Uniform:

During the summer months the children should be wearing the blue and gold sports kit which consists of a sports top and shorts with the option of a skort for girls. They should be wearing white ankle socks. Trainers should be plain sports trainers, ideally white, and not 'fashion' trainers to ensure that the children are appropriately supported during their activities. In addition, we ask that they are not black-soled as these shoes mark the hall floor. We ask if the trainers have laces that the children can tie these independently.

When the weather is colder, the children can wear a blue tracksuit, available from Valentino's. This is a blue jumper and blue jogging bottoms. Girls should not wear tights under their kit and should be provided with white ankle socks to wear.

STAFF JOIN IN TOO…. Congratulations Mr Doyle! For coming 147 out of 3148 people in a half marathon... running man!

Appeal for School Shoes

We have been asked to appeal for donations of old school shoes which are needed by children in Haiti. Children there can go to the free school if they have school shoes and many can’t afford them.

If anyone would like to donate any pairs of shoes, please place them under the hall canopy anytime up to end of term.

Many thanks for

News from The Marist Parent Teacher Association PTA

Hopefully you’ve all now got some key dates in the diary following last week’s PTA diary. Quick reminders of MacMillan, new parents and Grandparents coffee morning next Friday 9 -10.30am. All welcome and we’d love donations of cakes please. Quiz and chips night Friday October 11th 7pm start with review of PTA AGM minutes showing how much we’ve made in the last year, and then followed by a fantastic quiz, with fish and chip dinner. £12 per head includes 1 free drink and cash/card bar. Please see your reps Happy Bag collection October 10th - have your clear out and raise money for the school! Talking of raising money, easily (!), we’ve signed up to a few sites allowing you to place orders and make money for us at the same time. Please see the attached posters for Name-it labels, Amazon Smile, and have a look at the following for Kidstart.... Simply set up an account at Kidstart.com and you’ll raise funds for the PTA and save for your children’s own account. Here’s how it works: Set up an account with Kidstart.co.uk * Allocate a percentage of your savings to each of your children and to the Marist * Link your child’s saving account to the site * Start shopping online via the Kidstart website Whenever you make an online purchase, do it via the Kidstart site. There are more than 1500 retailers, each one offering a varying level of commission. The Marist is set up to receive whatever percentage you decide to donate. And that’s all there is to it! An easy way to save and support the school! What’s not to love.

There is an ever increasing number of vehicles on Surrey’s roads bringing congestion, safety

concerns and therefore more parking issues. This is very evident around our school and neighbouring roads.

Illegal and inconsiderate parking causes hazards for all of us and it is clear that this problem is getting

worse. Visually impaired people, wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs with very young children struggle

every day to cross the road safely to school. Of course we want to encourage you to leave the car at home and try an

alternative form of travel to school but we realise for many parents this is not an option due to a number of reasons.

We remind parents every week in the Marist Mail to be considerate when parking at the beginning and at the end of the school day. Most parents conform but sadly some think this doesn’t apply to them and continue to park putting other Marist families at risk. As a school concerned for safety during the school run, we ask that if you see dangerous driving or parking around the school (or anywhere for that matter) please report your concerns directly to Surrey Police at: https://my.surrey.police.uk/reportonline/drivesmart Surrey County Council and Surrey Police are working in partnership to crack down on people who drive and park in a selfish manner. Their campaign known as ‘Drive SMART’ aims to educate drivers on how to keep Surrey’s roads safe; to inform and encourage sensible parking but also to inform motorists about current parking regulations. Park SMART is also part of this campaign, providing web links and contact telephone numbers to facilitate reporting illegal and inconsiderate parking. http://www.drivesmartsurrey.org.uk You can also report incidents to Woking Borough Council 01483 755855 or on their website www.woking.gov.uk as well to Surrey Police. www.surrey.police.uk Our School Travel Plan and Travel Guide which promotes all different modes of travel can be found on the school website under the heading, ‘Parents, Travel Plan’. Now YOU can help to improve the situation by parking SMART in Surrey and by doing so help in improving the safety for all our parents and children. Mrs Duckham - School Travel Plan co-ordinator
