Week 7: Thanksgiving means ‘the act of giving thanks’. This week

we are going to focus on looking back throughout our year at The Marist. It

is important to give thanks to God for our experiences, friends, education,

family and memories. 1) Open and start by lighting a candle. Sing hymn ’10,000 Reasons’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXDGE_lRI0E or say a

prayer of thanksgiving, for example: Thank you God for all that grows, Thank you for the sky's rainbows, Thank

you for the stars that shine, Thank you for these friends of mine, Thank

you for the moon and sun, Thank you God for all you've done!

2) A psalm is a sacred song or poem which is used during Mass.

Often they are shared together with a response. Look at and

read the different examples of the psalms below. What do

they mean? What words do you think are the most important?

3) Key questions to promote discussion: Why do we need to thank God?

Why is God good?

Why is it important to glorify God’s name?

What does unfailing love mean?

How does God satisfy the thirsty and fill the hungry?

4) Suggested activities: Your teacher would love to see your work

especially as it is an opportunity to look back on your year.

Use the examples of the psalms to write your own thanksgiving

psalm for God. Think about what God does for us and what you

want to thank Him for.

Write a thanksgiving prayer we could use in school as our end of

the day prayer or for the end of the school year. What do you

want to thank God for?

Look back on your year at The Marist. What are your special

memories? What are you thankful for? What was very special? Put

your ideas together in a poem, prayer, poster etc.

Write a letter to God to thank him for the memories, friends,

experiences and learning opportunities you have had this year.

Make a link between the concept of Thanksgiving and The Last

Supper. What are the similarities and differences? Present your

ideas in a table.

5) Go back to the candle you lit at the beginning. Remember the

flame represents the light of the world and that Jesus

shines brightly in your heart.

6) Sing hymn ’10,000 Reasons’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXDGE_lRI0E or say a

prayer of thanksgiving, for example: For each new morning with its light, For rest and shelter of the night,

For health and food, For love and friends, For everything Thy goodness

sends. Amen.

Science: Hoop Glider Let’s get thinking: Which is the odd one out? Why? Can you find more than one answer?

Background science

The three images show how air resistance is used in parachuting, to slow a vehicle and in a hot air balloon.

Air resistance, or drag, is a force. In the parachute and hot air balloon, air resistance is acting against gravity but in the vehicle, the

drag force acts in opposition to the forward motion of the vehicle slowing it down.

What do you notice is similar in all three pictures?

What is the parachute made of?

What is the purpose of parachute in each picture?

Page 23: The Marist Catholic Primary School Home Learning Timetable · You could draw out and design your artefact or you could make it using resources you have at home. To go with your artefact,

Activity big question: How can I make my hoop glider travel the furthest?

Equipment needed: Straw, scissors, tape and paper

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xI1_aSvkNMM (Instructions)

1. Cut two strips of paper (about 2cm wide)

2. Use tape to create two hoops (one large and one small)

3. Attach them to both ends of the straw

Take your hoop glider outside (if possible) and see how far you can make it fly when the bigger hoop is at the back.

Predict whether you think it will make a difference with the hoop at the front or the back

Now see if your prediction is correct.

Choose one of the following investigations to find out how by changing one thing it will affect how far the glider will go.

Does it make a difference how far the hoops are apart?

Does having more than two hoops make it go further?

Does the size of hoop make a difference?

Record your results in a table, testing each glider three time and recording the distance.

Challenge: Use what you have learnt to create the ultimate hoop glider.

What is happening?

A hoop glider is a homemade paper aircraft that uses the four forces of flight to fly, much like a paper airplane. Curved surfaces on top of the glider help

generate lift. An aerodynamic shape reduces drag. Gravity pulls the glider toward the ground and your arm provides thrust!

The two sizes of hoops help to keep the straw balanced as it flies with both producing lift. The larger hoop creates drag which helps keep the straw level

while the smaller hoop in front keeps it from turning off course.
