The man with palaces in his soul

Whilst running from Eisav, Yaacov reaches Har Hamoriah, The Temple Mount and dreams his famous dream:

י ה מלאכ ה והנ ימ מ יע הש ו מג ה וראש רצ ב א ם מצ ה סל והנו.1 ים ב רד ים וי ים על אלה

And there was a ladder based on the ground and its head reaching heaven, with Godly angels ascending and decending it .

God promises him

I will be with you wherever you go

Yaacov makes an oath that the stone he used as a pillow.. י

Will be God's home

From there he continues his journey

Now Jacob lifted his feet and went to the land of the people of the East.

The lifting of feet is an interesting idiom, but as we know, our holy Torah does not waste words. We already know that he is on his way to Haran, so what does this teach us?

Rashi gives an original explanation ..

His heart lifted his feet, and it became easy to travel

In other words it wasn’t that his legs were not heavy and he didn’t need to be pushed ,Rashi tells us that his heart lifted his feet, and as a result it was it was easy for him to walk.

We can learn an important lesson from the Journey of Yaacov from his holy parents in Be`er Sheva in the Holy Land, to the pits of Haran , that our Rabbi's describe as the place of Godly anger.

In the beginning of our Parsha Yaacov has a vision of angels ascending and decending the ladder, God standing above him, and a vision of our future holy temple. But only a few verses later he arrives at Haran, and meets three shepherds, who were wasting time doing nothing next to a well. He speaks to them as one does to people like this ו...6 ום ל ל ור...

Brothers! Where are you from?... do you know Lava the son if Nachor?... How is he?

The huge shift from the great divine revelation, the founding of our evening prayers for all his descendants in the future, to the mundane situation he finds himself in now is huge. How would we have reacted, after such an uplifting spiritual event, to a meeting with tough and unfriendly local shepherds?

He speaks to them in a friendly way, "Brothers, where are you from" and they give a very terse reply

From Haran

He carries on trying and asks "do you know Lavan the son if Nachor?." And they give a laconic answer

We know him

He doesn't give up, we rolls up his sleeves, lifts the rock covering the well, and feels at home enough to tell them, despite not being asked, that according to the laws of labour

"The day is yet long; it is not the time to take in the livestock. Water the sheep and go, pasture."

He is telling them to continue their destiny and task in the world and that he will help them.

How could Yaacov make the move from divine revelation to Small talk with rough shepherds?

The answer is in the verse ,'והנה אנכי עמך ושמרתיך' "I will look after you wherever you go", that caused יוו ב רגל עק א י יש "his feet to be lifted", without any difficulty. He knows he is beginning twenty challenging years, and another 210 years of exile afterwards. He has no possessions, crossing the Jordan River only with a walking stick, after all his belongings were taken by Eliphaz, sent by his father Eisav to kill him10. He runs from Eisav to Lavan, knowing the difficulties he will face, but still "he lifted his feet" and the mundane reality was something important in his eyes.

Yaacov is described by the Israeli poet Yitzchak Shalev as "the man with palaces in his soul", he does not need a physical palace, a rock serving as a pillow under his head is enough, his feet are light as he knows his direction

A true believer, even when he "falls" from divine revelation to meetings with tough Haran Shepherds, beginning a long process of exile, he knows that God is with him, and "his heart can lift his feet".As is the Chabad minhag to announce after Simchat Torah, to mark the end of the holy festival period and the start of the cold mundane winter - יעקב הולך לדרכו – Yaacov begins his journey".
