We are The Makery and we’re a small

independent studio which teaches all

things craft. Established in 2008

with the intention of spreading

the joy of sewing, knitting and the

upcycling of old unloved furniture

and bringing it to the masses.

At The Makery our goal is to

make every class as accessible

as possible, rekindle people’s

imaginations and spark their

creativity again, something that

our growing list of workshops is

certainly proving very popular!

We now offer hen parties, children’s

parties and even baby showers,

not forgetting our drop-in coffee

mornings every Friday. It’s a place

where you can sit back with other

like-minded people and chat, gossip

and sew over a warm brew and a

piece of soft homemade cake.

So whether you’re an absolute

beginner to sewing or even a little

handy with a needle and thread,

there will definitely be something

for you at The Makery!

EthosWe are passionate about our business and what its

built on which is why we have such a strong logical

and sensible ethos. We can’t stand waste of any kind

whether it’s fuel, food, materials or even potential!

It’s just such well, a waste!

And so at The Makery you can come and learn how to

be more resourceful. It’s a place where items are

thought of in terms of their potential, reusing what

would otherwise be thrown away and getting people to

look at objects in a different manner.

So how do we put this ethos into practice? Are we

all talk and no trousers? Hey, we’ve got trousers

alright! (We made

them ourselves).

Armed with the

knowledge that

we can always be

more resourceful,

here at The Makery

we’ve made a

really good start

to what we hope

will be a great

future. Almost all

of our furniture

has been reclaimed

and made to look

beautiful again.

Almost all of

our workshops at

The Makery use

materials that

would otherwise go

to landfill. It

really does make

a lot of sense

to us and we hope

you think so too.

Plus, it’s a whole

lot of fun!

Whats on offer

Quick! What are you waiting for? There are frilly knickers

to be made, furniture to restore and beauty products to be

concocted! Walk this way to find out everything The Makery

has to offer...

From the basics of sewing, to

the more intermediate craftwork

skills, our workshops offer you

everything you will need to start

your own creative adventure!

Whether you start off by creating

cheerful bunting or a reversible

tote bag, patchwork cushions or

even some curtains; we’re sure

you’ll find your creative calling

in life and walk out inspired, and

with a real sense of achievement!

The laid back, friendly

environment of our workshops

means people come in not knowing

anything and leave with a skill

as well as something they’ve

created. The atmosphere makes

it easy to enjoy the experience

and lets you meet like-minded

crafters along the way, builds

your confidence in your craft,

and most importantly lets you

have some fun! So like we’ve said

already, what are you waiting for?

‘We’re sure you’ll find

your creative calling in

life and walk out inspired

and with a real sense of achievement!’

The Makery reckons the foundation of any great

wedding is an awesome hen party and at The

Makery our hen party workshops are going from

strength to strength. We’ve hosted many a

crafty hen-do and we love ’em! If your group of

hens are wanting to do something a little more

civilised than the stereotypical ‘girls on tour’

then step this way!

The Makery’s hen parties

let you spend the afternoon

in a relaxing and fun

environment, one where

champagne flows and

cupcakes tempt even the

staunchest dietarians. It’s

a place where ribbons and

beads spill out of jars

and sequins scatter the

tables around, all vying

for your attention. Before

you know it you are on the

road to becoming a domestic

goddess!

Whether you want to pursue

jewellery making, life

drawing, sewing or making

bath bombs, we’re sure

we’ll have something to

suit every group’s needs.

So bring all the girls

down. We don’t mind how

many of you come through

our door, as long as you

all leave with something

far more from your hen

weekend than a hangover!

Kids’ parties turn The Makery into a magical place. Their faces light up when they walk through the door and notice all of the goodies sprawled out on the table in front of them. From pretty fabric which is waiting to find new life as an outfit, to jars of buttons, piles of ribbon and rolls of lace; The Makery is glitz galore and is waiting for its next party! The children’s workshops are always a real surprise! The children get stuck in immediately, needing little coaxing to come up with ideas or strike upon inspiration. The enthusiasm and excitement of these classes are incredible and the children’s thirst to explore means that what they sometimes create is absolutely brilliant! We believe that nearly all children have

artistic inclinations; some natural, universal compulsion to express themselves with and among their surroundings (how many parents

do you know that haven’t spent afternoon-

hours frowning and scrubbing crayon master-pieces off their hall walls?), and it is this understanding that has lead to the success of

our kids’ parties. Something quite magical

happens when a group of people get together to make things. It brings people closer and delivers enormous

fulfilment.

So if you feel you’re not creative enough to host one yourself, then why not let The Makery do the hard

work for? Let your children make a mess somewhere other than your own home for a change. Least you won’t have to clean up the mess afterwards!

‘Its funny, it seems that once one child in a class has a Makery birthday party, they all want one!’

Up CyclingHere at The Makery we love seeing old things given a new lease of life. Anyone who visits us will see that most of our furniture is pre-loved and was once a little worn out, yet since been revived by us with the use of fabrics and print, most, if not all, have blossomed into some gorgeous new pieces! If you’re like us, we find it really satisfying to use vintage or reclaimed fabrics from all kinds of sources. As well as being an ethical choice, we feel using the older patterns of fabrics and reclaimed materials are just lovely! it’s all about thinking thrifty. People are starting to enjoy the benefits of this approach; whether its saving money, expressing creativity and individuality or just sharing in the enjoyment and pride from

making things themselves.

That’s why we run this workshop on renovating. Renovating has again taken

off in a big way and we’ve

been surprised at the eclectic range of pieces people have brought in to us; it’s been

brilliant! We think it’s great

that old chairs and furniture which have always had a story to tell are feeling loved once

more and we love that we’re

able to add to their story by turning them into contemporary pieces once more. So why don’t you bring in an item yourself

and start your own upcycling journey!

‘we feel using the older

patterns of fabrics and reclaimed

materials are just lovely!’

About Us…Hi, we’re Nigel and Kate and we’ve always

enjoyed the lovely sense of fulfilment

from making things. So, we decided to

give up our comfortable and safe jobs in

London to follow our hearts. We had the

idea for The Makery at the tail end of

2008. What started as a dream of building

a creative hub where people could come and

learn new skills as well as having lots

of fun, all within a relaxed and welcoming

environment. We are committed to helping

anyone who wants to be creative and learn

to live more resourcefully whilst having a

thoroughly good time!

We want to show you how you can save

yourself money and hopefully

be less dependent on big

faceless corporations. If

you can make it yourself:

you won’t need to buy it.

If it’s broken and you can

fix it, you won’t need to

replace it. If it’s old and

you can reinvent it, you

won’t need to update it!

Like the idea? It makes

perfect sense to us!

If you feel the same way

as we do, drop in on us!

It’d be lovely to meet

you and welcome you to

The Makery.
