Main Line BusinessMonthly Newsletter for Members of The Main Line Chamber of Commerce

Communications is our business debuting a redesigned newsletter

During my nearly three decade career as a journalist, my fellow reporters and editors occasionally would say “communications is our business” -- usually as part of a joke after we had a complete misunderstanding relating to putting out a newspaper or producing a website.

The phrase comes to mind today as we distribute this redesigned issue of Main Line Business monthly newsletter to about 2,500 member email addresses. Communications really is our business and we see this new look as leading the way to attractively displayed and fact-filled content about Main Line Chamber of Commerce activities and developments related to our members.

The importance of clear communication has rung true to me particularly in the nearly eight years since I left my first career to become CEO of this Chamber of Commerce.

I’ve concluded that we can create the best content, but if we don’t get the word out and develop effective distribution methods – whether through publications or promotions for events – no one will see that content or particularly care. Marketing, which is so essential to business success, is comprised of several forms of communication.

I’ve always invested time, and was fortunate to have my employers invest money, in professional and leadership development programs. If I had to boil down the

keys to success, the importance of clear, and preferably inspiring, communication in effective leadership is second only to authenticity. But even if your heart is in the right place and you are passionate about making a positive difference in the world, caring for your employees and deeply committed to achieving goals, you must be able to communicate for it to truly count.

One aspect of our communications that I think we have always gotten right is the fact that so many of our messages are not about the Chamber itself, but rather about our members. Supplementing this newsletter, the revolution in social media has given us new tools to provide exposure to developments and initiatives relating to our members, keeping them top of mind in front of current and prospective clients.

As we launch our new look for Main Line Business today, please seek action steps within these pages.

Special thanks to Hollister Creative, which is led by current Chamber Board Chair Kim Landry, and her Vice President Georgette Klotz, who conducted this redesign project. They were great to work with. Thanks also to the Chamber staff for their input into this design.

As always, we welcome your feedback about all we do. We would not exist without our members. Come to think of it, I’m not sure I communicate that often enough or well enough. Maybe this redesigned newsletter will help with that too.

Have an energizing and profitable day, President & CEO,

Save The Date - Celebration of Hometown Heroes

The Main Line Chamber Foundation will host the 8th Annual “Celebration of Hometown Heroes” on Tuesday, June 12th at 6:30pm in the Board Room of the Lower Merion Township Administration Building, 75 E. Lancaster Avenue in Ardmore, PA. The public is encouraged to attend as scholarships are awarded through the program to men and women who serve their communities.

With these latest awards The Main Line Chamber Foundation will have given out more than $440,000 in scholarships to area students, the vast majority of which attend local colleges and universities. The Celebration of Hometown Heroes event was created to draw attention to and show appreciation for the service of the volunteer firefighters and EMTs who selflessly serve the entire Main Line area.

“The citizens who receive these scholarships are among the first responders, day or night, when emergencies occur throughout the Main Line area,” said John Durso, chairman of The Main Line Chamber Foundation Board of Directors. “Residents of the Main Line often don’t realize what an important role these volunteers play in our communities, saving taxpayers millions of dollars that might otherwise go to fund professional emergency responders. We believe it is important to celebrate their service and distribute the scholarship awards at a public ceremony that can shine a light on their invaluable contributions.”
