Edition #2

Last month in the meadow of Runnymede, King John signed the Magna Carta also known as the “Great Charter”. This Magna Carta is an example of one of the first constitutional governments designed to help the local nobles.

The document clearly states the people’s several rights including inheritance, marriages, borrowing money, funding the army, and the justice system. All of these factors are some of the new conditions made by the Magna Carta.

The Magna Carta

John, by the grace of God, king of England … to the archbishops, bishops, abbots, earls, barons, judicial officers, foresters, sheriffs, stewards, servants, and to all his bailiffs and faithful subjects, greeting. Knowing that we, out of our respect for God and for the salvation of our souls and for all our ancestors and heirs, and for the reform of our territory, on the advice of our honored fathers, Stephen, archbishop of Canterbury, the most important cardinal in England, and others, our faithful subjects:

I. In the first place have granted to God , that this charter confirms for us and our heirs forever that the English church shall be free, and shall have its rights without interference.

II. If any of our earls or barons or others owing us service as a knight dies, if his heir be of an adult age shall have his full inheritance…

III. If his heir be underage and a ward, he shall have his full inheritance when he comes of age without paying taxes. That guardian shall take only what is needed to keep the property in good repair from the money the land produces. He shall restore to the heir his land fully stocked with all necessary equipment upon coming of age…

IV. Heirs shall be married without ridicule, but must consider those closest in blood relation before marrying another.

The recently signed Magna Carta outlawed Jewish moneylenders from collecting interest from an heir of debt until they are an adult. This new rule is creating an economic loss for the Jews since previously they could collect interest and therefore more income. One Jewish moneylender said, “It is a great loss of money. I am outright against the Magna Carta and wish that that certain law is erased.” Several Jewish people are now extremely angry

Marriages are Canceled throughout Englandby Robert Eng

Crusader’s Chronicle

Due to the Magna Carta, hundreds of marriages was canceled because of rule six, “Heirs shall be married without ridicule, but must consider those closest in blood relation before marrying another.” This new idea opened possibilities for many to-be couples who did not want to marry someone thirty years older than them. Old Man Jenkins says, “Being an eighty year old man, it just isn’t right marrying a two year old.”

Many more marriages are expected to be canceled this upcoming month and rescheduled with different pairs of people ready to married from different families.

King at a lossby Robert Eng

Crusader’s Chronicle

Every since the Magna Carter, King John has been having a hard time with his finances. Without the Magna Carta, the king would collect great sums of riches from inheritance money he did not inherit. Many heirs of many different families were not getting all if not none of theirinheritance. Because of the Magna Carta, this problem has been fixed with all the clear laws created. King John is now struggling to keep funding his old life where he could use people’s money for foot massages and rubies.
