Her favorite class is Education 150.Her dream job would be coordinating the science curriculum for a big city. Her favorite song is Rivers and Roads by the Head and the Heart. She has two cats named Pumpkin and Maxine. She likes to read and play the ukulele. Her favorite book is at the moment Buffering: Unshared Tales of a Life Fully Loaded by Hannah Hart. Her favorite movie is Howl's Moving Castle.

She’s from Valparaiso, IN. She lives with both her parents and her brother. Her favorite UE event was RSA’s Winter Whispers. Her goals for next year include going to Harlaxton and being able to observe how teaching and classroom management is different there. She also wants to be more involved on campus next year. She likes the kayak and canoe. She was a girl scout for 11 years and is a gold award recipient. She plays the clarinet.

“Shelby is a phenomenal person inside and out. She applied to attend GLACURH and went with many people from our university that she did not know. She was completely willing to step outside of her comfort zone to bring back experience to impact the campus in a positive way and grow as a person and as a leader on campus. I see so much potential in her, and I cannot wait to see how she positively influences the campus as well as the people around her.” –Miranda Nelson, RSA President

Shelby has been a great leader in Hall Council this year. She stepped up as President for the Spring semester and has done a great job so far. She helps keep everyone on track during our meetings, and you can tell she really enjoys what she does. I have really appreciated and enjoyed having her on our Hall Council this year. -Hannah Bengtson, Head Resident, Powell Hall

Shelby has recently taken the lead in the Etiquette Dinner Committee through Powell Hall Council. The group has only met once, but she promptly responded with thorough minutes of what happened as well as did the preliminary design for the event’s flyer. I was impressed with her professionalism and the quickness of her action in getting things done. None of the advisors could make it to the meeting, so it was especially important that those things get done when they did. –Jackie Luedtke, Residential Coordinator, Hughes Hall

Early on in the fall semester, Shelby took on theresponsibility of Vice President of Powell HallCouncil. As you can imagine, this came withmany responsibilities, which were intensified bythe fact that Powell Hall is the Honors building,so many residents focus on their academics sointensely, hall council programs are hardly ontheir radar. Additionally, Powell is the leastpopulated building on campus, which makes itdifficult to get students to events. Nevertheless,Shelby worked to research successful hallprograms, plan said programs, and executethem. Shelby spent a significant amount of timewith other residence life leaders and quicklygrasped the concept of programs being aprimary way to build community, which showedin the effort with which she worked on theseevents.

Magic In the Corridors

After attending GLACURH 2016, Shelby caught the res life bug forgood, and stepped up as her Hall Council’s president. In this role, sheleads meetings, oversees all executive functions, and works to providea welcoming, active community in Powell Hall. In Addition, Shelby hasbeen working on trying to be more involved with Resident StudentsAssociation, most specifically through event attendance. She attendedWinter Whispers as well as Hall Council Training, and stayed for theduration of both events. She encourages others to be involved withRSA, and is looking forward to finding more ways to contributeindirectly, since presidents of Hall Councils are not constitutionallyallowed to be active, voting members of RSA. Shelby has also taken thelead on an Etiquette Dinner event that is a collaboration amongPowell, Hale, and Hughes Halls. Collaborations of this size are notcommon at UE, but Shelby has confidently and graciously taken onthe responsibility of leading this group toward hosting a successful, educational event that is surely to be remembered by all those inattendance.

During fall semester, Shelby took a risk and applied to attend GLACURH 2016 as part of

University of Evansville’s delegation. She was the only first year to apply, and was selected to

represent her building. She even stepped up and took lead on all of the spirit pins for the UE

delegation. Though typically Shelby has a more reserved personality, she opened up to her fellow

delegates and met dozens of new people at GLACURH. She let go of any insecurities and contributed to a great role call on the opening

night, attended every program session, and participated in a very active conversation during

banquet about residence life patterns across GLACURH.

Magic Abroad

Upon reflection of her experience at GLACURH 2016, Shelby said she “gained

insight into differing styles of leadership and programming to bring back to life on

campus.” She has done exactly that. Shelby utilizes not only the tips and ideas she

learned from actually attending sessions, but also uses her connections she made within

her own delegation to make residential programming as strong as possible within

her hall. She also had many insightful things to say during the follow-up meeting held at

the very end of the semester.
