Kudos to Mines Little Theater

My husband, Dick Collins ’61, ’74, is a proud graduate of Mines and upon beingadvised that opening night of Guys and Dolls was on tap for alumni, we drove down fromGeorgetown to check it out. I was surprised to learn there even was a drama or musicaldepartment at Mines. We were pleased and delighted with the wonderful job done byeveryone involved. The orchestra held its own and the set was most inventive. The actorswere very, very good. The accents were accurately rendered; the action and dancing wereplayed exceptionally well and each of the characters personified his or her role accurately andwith real enthusiasm.

Please convey our congratulations to one and all. We hope we’ll be seeing more ofthese multi-talented folks!

I find Dr. Nummedal’s proposed research on capturing anthropogenic CO2 for usein extracting more petroleum interesting and worthwhile. I wish him well on the project.

I am, however, disturbed by the apparent method of marketing the idea. The articlecontains this sentence: “Finally, the direct linkage between increases in global temperatureand industrial production of CO2 has now been demonstrated beyond any reasonablescientific doubt.” This statement is untrue. Also, as apparent justification, you show a graphof temperature change over time, but that’s all it shows. It does not show any correlation withCO2 concentration. There has been some short-term apparent correlation of CO2

concentration with temperature in the last half of the previous century. But, such short-termcorrelation does not prove cause and effect.

In fact, the geologic record shows there is no correlation between surfacetemperature and CO2 concentration. For instance, in considering the glacial-interglacialtransitions of the last half million years, we see that increases or decreases of CO2 did notprecede temperature changes, but followed them. Also there were long periods of time whenCO2 remained stable but temperatures dropped, as well as times when CO2 concentrationsdropped but temperature remained stable or even rose.

It seems to me that if Dr. Nummedal wants to say something sweeping like “thedirect linkage between increases in global temperature and industrial production of CO2 hasnow been demonstrated beyond any reasonable scientific doubt,” he needs to use somethingmore meaningful than Figure 1 as proof. All I see is a warming trend that begins somewherebefore the graph starts until about 1100, then a cooling trend that lasts from 1100 until 1600,then a warming trend from 1600 until now. I doubt if industrial CO2 production evenentered the picture in a meaningful way until 1900. Is there some evidence that industrialCO2 production has contributed significantly to our current warming trend, or is itcompletely anecdotal? Doug Brandon BSc Geol ’79

28 Years at Mines

President John U. Trefny hasnotified the Colorado School ofMines Board of Trustees that hewill retire July 31, 2006. BoardPresident Michael S. Nyikossaid, “President Trefny has ledColorado School of Mines withgreat vision, and he has appliedhis extraordinary leadershipskills to making that visionbecome reality. He has led withintegrity and a clearcommitment to excellence in allthat Mines represents — nowand in the future. I personallyadmire President Trefny as acolleague, friend and

outstanding chief executive. The Board is proud of his impressive list ofaccomplishments.”

Trefny has been president for five years, including one year as both interimpresident and vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty. He hasserved the School continuously for 28 years—longer than any president in theSchool’s history—beginning as an assistant professor of physics.

“I am not retiring immediately,” said Trefny. “There is still much to beaccomplished as I work with the Board to set forth goals and objectives for myfinal year in office. My wife, Sharon, and I will do everything possible toachieve a successful transition and the continuation of important, ongoinginitiatives at this School, which will always be our professional home.”

Deeply committed to the students Mines serves, Trefny often speaks ofproviding “an education that works.” From K-12 to undergraduate, graduateand professional outreach programs, “it’s all about teaching—working withstudents,” Trefny told a reporter recently. He has won several teachingexcellence awards, including the James R. Wailes Award by the ColoradoAlliance for Science in 1997 and the Excellence in Science Teaching Award in1992 from the Colorado Association of Science Teachers.

Throughout his presidency Trefny has also emphasized the important roleresearch plays in the advancement of humankind and in the cultivation of adynamic and rigorous intellectual learning community.

Mrs. Trefny has fulfilled her many duties with skill and grace, taking a specialinterest in Mines’ humanitarian engineering efforts by serving on the boardsof Engineers Without Borders, the Namlo Foundation and the InternationalCenter for Appropriate and Sustainable Technology. She has also served theGolden community through board memberships with the Jefferson SymphonyOrchestra and the Foothills Art Center.

“Under President Trefny’s watch, Mines has made great strides in education,research and public service, and has gained considerable prestige around theworld,” said CSM Alumni Association President Alan Mencin ’79.

Trefny came to Mines in 1977 after holding facultypositions at Cornell and Wesleyan universities.Beginning as an assistant professor in the Departmentof Physics, he was promoted to associate professor andlater professor. He became head of the department in1990, and served in that capacity until 1995 when hebecame vice president for academic affairs and dean offaculty. Trefny was named the School’s 15th presidentAugust 1, 2001, after serving as interim president thepreceding year.

A respected scholar, Trefny has authored technicalpublications on such topics as quantum mechanics,the thermal properties of organic materials, supercon-ductivity, acoustics and direct energy conversion.Active in community service, he has served onnumerous boards and councils, including Sigma Xi,the scientific research society, the National RenewableEnergy Laboratory, Red Rocks Community College,the Midwest Research Institute, the Colorado Oil andGas Association, the Rocky Mountain Regional Centerof the Institute of International Education, theJefferson Symphony Orchestra and the LutheranMedical Center Community Foundation. He holds aB.S. in physics from Fordham University and a Ph.D.in physics from Rutgers University.

The same is true as to the amount of recoverablehydrocarbons left to be found in the world. Ever since 1870,naysayers have been predicting the demise of the petroleumproduction business. Long before there’s any scarcity of naturallyoccurring oil and gas in the world, new technologies will lead tothe forced decline of oil and gas production on account of pricecompetition, engendered by the capitalistic system.

Parts of your recent Peak Oil and Global Warmingarticle were good, but I object to the statement “...direct linkagebetween increases in global temperature and industrialproduction of CO2 has now been demonstrated beyond anyreasonable scientific doubt.” I have tried to keep current as toclimate change and spend considerable time reviewing technicalinformation as it becomes available. I still have considerable doubtthat man has materially altered climate changes. The climate inshort term may be slightly warmer. There has been a measuredincrease in CO2 in our atmosphere. I do not know if more CO2 isgood or bad, as we know it has been significantly higher in thepast. There is no smoking gun connecting the burning of carbonand possible overall warming with certainty.

As to the CO2 injection into certain reservoirs toenhance recovery of liquids, it works great in some types of oil.We use CO2 from local areas of “cooked” carbonates as oursource. I cannot imagine the energy costs involved in CO2

extraction from flue gas or other sources. Most of our energycomes from fossil fuels, so using that source is currently not goingto be a net viable methodology. I would have preferred that yourarticle contain a few “we believe” or “possibly” thrown in insteadof such a definitive position on a current theory to explainpossible global warming on a long-term scale.

I found the article on peak oil and global warminginteresting. It reminded me of another use of CO2 fromindustrial operations: the recovery and sale of food-grade CO2

from refinery flue gas streams. This CO2 ends up in carbonatedbeverages. Unfortunately it is a temporary storage of CO2 withmost of it eventually returning to the biosphere. Same result maybe true for using CO2 in EOR or IOR since mixing liquid CO2

and oil will result in CO2 release as the oil is processed.I am surprised by the narrow view of the oil and global

warming espoused by CERI. They make no mention of reducingthe use of fossil fuels by means of alternative forms of electricalgeneration that do not depend on burning carbonaceousmaterials, forms such as wind, solar and nuclear. The latter is usedin France for over 70 percent of the electrical energy. The U.S.makes almost 20 percent of its electrical energy from nuclearpower. Doubling that amount in the U.S. would significantlylower the release of CO2. Even China recognizes this fact as theyare embarking on a major program of development of nuclearpower plants.

Using CO2 for EOR may be a good idea from aneconomic viewpoint for old oil fields, but I remain unconvincedthat it will provide significant help in reducing CO2 levelsworldwide. Alternative energy, especially nuclear energy, clearlywill.

Dag Nummedal responds:The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change)

report from 2001 documents very well how the CO2 concentrationexplains the long-term global warming trend since the industrialrevolution. Also, a series of other papers over the past 10 years havepresented CO2 data from ice cores, which document a closecorrelation with the temperature curves that I used as illustration inFigure 1, which was compiled by Richard A. Kerr, newscorrespondent for Science Magazine, based on a series ofindependently derived global temperature histories. The most recentstudy on atmospheric CO2 variations over the past 1000 years isbased on pore-space density in needles of hemlock trees from the U.S.Pacific Northwest. The data demonstrate a close correlation to theglobal temperature histories and demonstrate that the majortemperature changes lag the changes in CO2 by several decades.

The IPCC report also documents how variations in solarluminosity and volcanic aerosols explain the high-frequency (decadaltime scale) changes in global temperature and how these signalscause such transient cooling episodes as the one we experienced fromabout 1950 to 1970.

On the longest time scale of interest – the last severalglacial periods – the data from the Vostok ice core demonstrate thatpresent-day atmospheric CO2 concentrations are about 30 percenthigher than those during any of the previous four interglacials.During these 450,000 years, the atmospheric CO2 concentrationshave ranged from about 280 – 290 ppm during the interglacials toabout 200 ppm during the glacials (including the last ice age).During the past 1000 years, the concentration of atmospheric CO2averaged about 280 ppm and then began a rapid rise to the presentlevel of about 370 ppm about 200 years ago. This rapid rise ofatmospheric CO2 coincides with the period of global industrialization.

The many factors affecting the global system make itimpossible to say with absolute certainty what the relative impacthas been of natural vs. man-made factors in the climate history ofour planet, but the data do show rapid global warming over the past 200 years. The physics behind the greenhouse effect is wellunderstood. The geological record of CO2 concentrations is consistentwith published historical temperature trends. Therefore, I concludethat taking corrective action now to reduce global warming is theprudent way to manage the risk of major and costly dislocations ofnatural resource-based industries across the globe.

As a final note, in mid-June 2005, the National Academiesof Science of all eight nations in the G8, plus many others, submitteda joint note in preparation for the upcoming G8 summit in Britain,in which they declared that the science behind global warming is unassailable.

Dust, a mundane irritation tomany of our terrestrial activities,

represents one of the most significantchallenges to NASA as it seeks to send manned

missions back to the moon and later to Mars. Intheir bid to overcome these problems, NASA has

awarded a $14.6 million contract to a research teamheaded by CSM Mining Engineering ProfessorMasami Nakagawa.

The team is charged with developing design guidelines andrecommendations to mitigate a wide range of dust-relatedproblems that a manned mission to the moon willencounter. The group includes NASA, a researchpartnership named Institute for Space Resources, severalcommercial partners, and faculty and students from Minesand other universities.

There is a great deal of dust on the moon. In fact, the entiresurface is blanketed with the stuff. Referred to as“regolith,” this material is the result of billions of years ofbombardment from micrometeorites, cosmic rays andparticles of solar wind which have broken down surfacerocks. While this powdery substance allowed NeilArmstrong’s historic “one small step” to be so vividlycaptured on film, it was in every other regard a majorproblem for the six Apollo missions that landed.

Lunar dust bears little resemblance to the substance wewipe from our TV screens and dashboards: it’s finer and agreat deal more abrasive. Erosion from wind, water andother dynamic forces on Earth smooth the edges of our

finest particles—not so on the moon. Philip Metzger, aphysicist at NASA Kennedy Space Center says, “[Lunar dustis] almost like fragments of glass or coral—odd shapesthat are very sharp and interlocking.” In addition, theytend to be elongated with jagged arms protruding thatadhere, Velcro-like, to all but the smoothest surfaces.

After only short moon walks, Apollo 17 astronauts founddust particles had jammed the joints of their spacesuitsand, in some cases, dust penetrated spacesuit seals andcaused several to leak. “Maintaining effective seals isobviously crucial to survival on the moon,” Nakagawapoints out, “but it’s extremely hard in the presence of somuch dust. During the Apollo program, we transportedmany canisters of lunar soil and rock back to Earth incontainers designed to maintain the near-perfect vacuumof the lunar environment. Every single one leaked becausedust compromised those seals.”

“Dust is the number one environmental problem on themoon,” said Apollo 17 astronaut Harrison Schmitt, whoexperienced an alarming allergic reaction to lunar dustduring his 1972 mission. Without adequate cleaningsystems in the airlock, a lot of dust was tracked back intothe lunar module where it became airborne, particularlyunder zero gravity on the return journey.

Thankfully, neitherSchmitt nor anyApollo astronautexperienced long-termhealth problems linkedto inhaling lunar dust,but their exposure wasrelatively short comparedto the missions currentlybeing planned. There isspeculation that astronautsmay be at risk for developingsilicosis—a condition

identified after hundreds of West Virginian miners died inthe 1930s half a decade after they had been exposed to veryfine silica dust. The minute particles became embedded inthe miners’ lungs and stayed there because they were toosmall for the body to expel. Although lunar dust particlestend to be a little larger than the silica that causes silicosis,they are more jagged and may be equally hard for the bodyto remove. With these concerns in mind, research oneffective air filtration is going to be a major research focusfor Nakagawa’s group.

While the project will be focused on problems associatedwith moon dust, Nakagawa says that NASA’s sights are seton Mars. While there are many differences between theMartian environment and the moon, they are both verydusty. Successful mitigation strategies for lunar missionsare likely to work on Mars too.

Although the scope of the project is very broad, Nakagawahas clear objectives: “We have to minimize attracting dustin the first place, we need to remove dust without damagingthe surface we are cleaning (brushes are out); we have to beable to make perfect seals in a dusty environment; and weneed to be able to efficiently filter the air.” AlthoughNakagawa and his team won’t be providing NASA with anyspecific products, they will be providing detailed designspecifications and recommendations.

For much of his research, Nakagawa will be working closelywith Dr. Gary Olhoeft in the Department of Geophysics,whose lab includes a unique vacuum chamber left overfrom the Apollo era. The drum-shaped chamber, six feet indiameter and seven feet long, was designed to simulateconditions on the lunar surface. It has a temperature rangeof -150 degrees to 100 degrees Celsius, and can achieve avacuum even greater than on the surface of the moon.

Although Nakagawa is the lead investigator for the four-year project, many parties will be participating from acrossthe country, including three NASA centers, five universities

and nine industrial partners. Involvement from the CSMcampus will include the Mining Engineering Department,the Geophysics Department and the NASA-funded Institutefor Space Resources.

Awarding a contract like this is unusual for the spaceagency. “It is a new paradigm for them. NASA has neverfunded a large university-led project like this. In the past,they have coordinated almost all of their own research,awarding smaller grants to universities for much morespecific projects. We have been awarded considerableresources to study a very open-ended problem,” saysNakagawa.

Finding solutions soon is going to be important—NASA isplanning an extended manned mission to the moon for2020. By making significant progress in dust mitigationover the next four years, Nakagawa and his team willprovide valuable information for this historic return to themoon. And by helping to make possible this relatively smallstep back to the moon, he and his team may well makecritical contributions toward the very much larger leap outto Mars.

The professional practice of engineering isintrinsically, and increasingly, multinational and

global in scope. Technical leaders work in aworld arena that includes the rapid integrationof markets and a borderless financial structure,the growth and spread of knowledge assets innew economies, international trends andregional requirements in environmentalprotection and sustainable development, as wellas areas of unrest stemming from ethnic, culturaland religious conflict. While the consequences ofglobalization have many technical implications,engineering executives in multinational enterprises muststeer their work and decisions within the context of these differingeconomies and political and cultural environments. This isespecially relevant in the resources, energy and environmentalsectors, where the overlay of people and their politics, localeconomics, development and the geography of nations are notnecessarily aligned to the world’s distribution of natural resources.

Mines, with its unique mission in energy, mineral and materialscience and engineering, and associated engineering fields, has aresponsibility to address the impact of globalization and theinfluence of varying national political economies on the practice

of engineeringin themultinationalresourceindustries. Tothis end, theSchoolbelieves that anew degree,entitledMaster ofInternationalPoliticalEconomy of

Resources (MIPER), would be appropriate, timely and attractive.This non-thesis degree would be configured to meet the needs oftoday’s and especially tomorrow’s professionals in a wide range offor-profit ventures related to engineering, applied sciences andtechnology that are linked to the industries served by Mines. Inaddition, professionals who work for non-profit entities such asU.S. governmental agencies and other nations, regional alliancesand non-governmental organizations whose missions areresource-oriented can also benefit from this degree. The degreewould also serve students who are simultaneously pursuing abachelor of science in engineering or applied science and theMIPER at Mines, as well as technically qualified graduate studentsfrom the United States and abroad who seek to earn an advanceddegree to further their academic and professional career goals.

Although the motivations that call for the MIPERdegree are escalating, they are not entirely new.

Indeed, Mines began responding to thesephenomena some 15 years ago when itestablished an undergraduate minor programin international political economy. Then, fouryears ago, with rising student demand andcomplementary recommendations from our

corporate, industry and government advisers,Mines established a graduate certificate in

international political economy. This evolutionaryand proven track heralds the concept of the new

MIPER degree.

The MIPER degree would incorporate the traditional empiricaland analytical approaches to political studies, economics, history,sociology and resource development with the addition of thecritical perspectives of culture, geography and interdisciplinaryenvironmental studies, as well as a segment of science andengineering analysis that would set it apart as a Mines degree. Thegoal is to provide students with a full understanding of theoperational dimensions of increasingly globalized interstate-market relations that are defined and shaped by the rapid,dynamic and complex integration of trade, finances, technology,politics, societal and environmental constraints and treatyobligations, especially as these relate to the resource industries. Todo so requires that students be educated in the interconnectionsof institutional, cultural, geographic and environmental factors,and the political risks inherent in engaging in commercialcrossborder activities in the global economy.

We know of no peer programs elsewhere in the world with aninternational political economy of resources approach. At severalother universities – such as Harvard’s Kennedy School ofGovernment, Thunderbird, Emory University, the University ofPuget Sound and Johns Hopkins’ School for AdvancedInternational Studies – international political economy is offeredas a concentration field within traditional departments of politicalscience or international relations. But they do not place anemphasis on resources or specificallytarget the professional engineering andapplied science communities.Furthermore, none of these programsadd MIPER’s proposed dimensions ofculture and environment to thetraditional state-market perspective ofinternational political economy.

A Mines MIPER degree would bestructured on the School’s institution-wide 36 credit-hour curriculum modelfor non-thesis master’s degrees. Theintegrative degree would build uponthe existing international political

economy Graduate Certificate, which has beenavailable since 1999. The difference between thecertificate and the master’s degree is that thedegree would include examination of the role ofresources in global trade, finance, development,and the environment, with a clear orientation toengineering and quantitative decision-making.

It would also include the basics of the certificate, which requiresinternational political economy foundation courses: theories andmethods relevant to international political economy, internationalpolitical economy of a region (Latin America, Asia Pacific, theMiddle East, Sub-Saharan Africa or Europe), economic or politicalgeography, global environmental politics and policy, andinternational political risk assessment and mitigation.

The field of international political economy has a broader andbetter known history internationally than it does in the UnitedStates. Programs exist at various universities in the UnitedKingdom (e.g., Kent, Newcastle, Warwick and Hull), while coursesin international political economy are offered as part ofinternational studies or international relations at Manchester, theLondon School of Economics, Leeds and Wales. Programs alsoexist in Canada (York University and Carlton), Malaysia (NationalUniversity), Australia (National University) and the InternationalUniversity of Japan, but, again, none focuses on resources. Wewish to build on the strengths and reputation of Mines’ mission-related areas and its focus on engineering and the applied sciencesto develop the MIPER degree as a niche specialty.

The School’s prediction of student enrollment in such a degree isguided by recent trends in the Graduate Certificate program andby an assessment of potential interest among our undergraduatestudents. A total of 485 undergraduate students were surveyedduring spring 2002 to establish a sense of the local campus marketfor a MIPER-type degree. Of those who responded, more than 85percent expressed enthusiasm for the proposed program orexpressed the intention of entering it. Contacts with post-1990Mines graduates, including international students who tookcourses in the undergraduate international political economy

minor while at Mines, stress that theproposed program would enhance theability of our graduates to work moresuccessfully in the internationalengineering environment.

Most importantly, however, is therepeated feedback from prospectivestudents as well as those who are in or have completed the GraduateCertificate: what really matters most tothem and to future employers is thecredibility carried in a master’s degree.Recent nationwide surveys indicatethat many high school students now

enter college intending to obtain a master’s degree. And among theprofessional engineering societies, it has long been argued, andincreasingly demonstrated, that the four-year engineering degree isonly marginally sufficient as an entry-qualification into theprofession. Therefore, we are confident that demand for a MIPERdegree would be significant and long-term among current andprospective students and advantageous among our recruiters andindustry constituents.

We expect that students who complete such a degree would haveenhanced capabilities beyond the necessary high quality technicaleducation ofengineers andappliedscientists.Thoseenhancedcapabilitieswill becontextualizedin technologyand theresourcesarenagermane tothe Mines’mission. Over the past three years, the Graduate Certificateprogram has been successful in placing its international politicaleconomy certificate holders in global resources industries. Thedemand for such individuals has been recognized by Mines’external Visiting Committee for the Division of Liberal Arts andInternational Studies and by a committee of CSM-relevant CEOsand industry leaders that was created to provide guidance andsupport to international political economy of resources programs.

The concept of the MIPER degree has been discussed vigorouslyand supportively on the Mines campus and with the Board ofTrustees. Thus far, the Colorado Commission on HigherEducation has been hesitant to support it because of its perceivedincompatibility with Mines’ statutory role and mission, andprogrammatic details are presently under consideration in anattempt to resolve this matter.

The effects of the Dec. 26, 2004 great tsunami were wideranging and long lasting. In addition to burying their dead

and rebuilding their homes and communities, survivors alsoface the serious problem of groundwater contamination. Thetsunami contaminated more than 20,000 wells along the coast ofSri Lanka and many now contain water with levels of salinitytoo high to drink. In addition, cropland along the coastal zonesremains polluted with seawater that has been slow to dissipatebecause of seepage, poor drainage due to blocked channels and ahard pan below the plough depth.

In an effort to address these water problems, the U.S. NationalScience Foundation sponsored a fact-finding mission to SriLanka that was headed by CSM’s AMAX DistinguishedProfessor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, TissaIllangasekare, a Sri Lanka native. During the trip in February tothe tsunami-affected regions, Illangasekare, Charles Harveyfrom MIT and Jayantha Obesysekera from the South FloridaWater Management District surveyed some of the affected watersupply wells and assessed the damage to the infrastructures.

The residents in the coastal communities in tsunami-affectedareas depend on either pipe-borne municipal utilities or dugwells for water supply for domestic use. Although Sri Lanka’sNational Water Supply and Drainage Board recently increasedcoverage of pipe-borne water supply in many areas of the coast,the primary source of domestic water is still the private wells intheir own backyards. Even if residents receive water frommunicipal utilities, they still maintain and use dug wells forwashing, bathing and other uses. The most common source formunicipal water supply on the island is the surface water fromrivers and streams. However, in areas where surface water is notavailable or scarce, deep tube wells are the primary source formunicipal water utility systems.

The tsunami caused physical destruction of some infrastructureassociated with a few of the municipal water supply schemes inthe coastal belt. However, a bigger concern is the destruction ofdug wells near the coast and the contamination of the privatewells of residents who depend on them for their domestic water supply.

Most of the private wells still appear to be contaminated withsalt water. Many governmental and non-governmentalorganizations have attempted to clean thousands of privatewells by pumping salty water from the wells, often multiple

times. In many cases, the complete dewatering of the well hasresulted in wall collapse making the well unusable. Also, itappears that the water pumped out of the well into the adjacentlands may have simply re-percolated through the sandy soilsresulting in reintroduction of salty water into the wells.

Illangasekare and his colleagues observed several wells withconcrete casings that were tilted, destroying the well. This waspresumably caused by the shear force of tsunami wavestraveling onshore and collapsing the soil foundation. Based ontheir observations, it appears that salinity in private wells hasbeen reduced significantly but is still above 1-2 ppt (parts pertrillion) and is not suitable for drinking, although residents usethe water for washing and bathing. It is unknown how long itwill take for the wells to be cleaned by natural recharge of freshwater during the rainy season.

The density of population in the coastal belt of Sri Lanka is highwith little land in between houses. Typically, each house has adug well and a septic tank located not very far from each other.This caused concerns of cross contamination even before thetsunami. A carefully planned monitoring effort is needed toinvestigate this cross contamination issue, particularly in view of proposed plans for relocating coastal residents. Thegovernment has proposed a ban on building along a 100-meterbuffer zone on the coast, but residents are quickly rebuilding inthose areas before a new law is passed.

If the dug wells in the coastal regions continue to be unusablefor some time, it may impose significant pressure on pipe-bornewater supplied by surface water resources in the region. There isvery little technical information about groundwater resourcesin the coastal area affected by the tsunami. Although a generalmap of the geology of these regions exists, little usefulinformation regarding the local geology and the aquifercharacteristics exist. The water level data is scarce and there is no national network for monitoring groundwater levels and quality.

Although much of the road-side debris has been cleared, muchremains in areas away from the highways. This debris maycontain harmful substances, which can further contaminategroundwater supplies.

Another groundwater problem caused by the tsunami was thedestruction of croplands. Many of the paddy fields located in

eastern and southern Sri Lanka were severely impacted by thetsunami waves. Paddy fields near the coast and vegetable grovesin the adjacent highlands were destroyed by the waves movinginland. The waves also created soil erosion and deposited debrisin the croplands. Prolonged inundation of crop lands with saltwater has increased the soil salinity. A recent study of electricalconductivity of the affected paddy lands found 20 to 200 timeshigher percentages than normal, even after heavy rains. The soilsalinities may remain for a prolonged period of time due topoor drainage and high evaporation.

The natural coastal vegetation also was affected. Except for thesalt tolerant coconut palms, many other trees appear to bedying. However, there are indications that heavy rains thatfollowed the tsunami appear to have helped recover some of thedying trees. In other areas, it is not clear if the trees continue tobe affected by the contaminated groundwater.

The NSF-funded team was not in Sri Lanka long enough to beable to do more than a preliminary assessment. They suggestedthat more study is necessary to obtain an in-depthunderstanding of all the issues and to identify all scienceand engineering needs of groundwater related problemsassociated with the tsunami. However, the group’spreliminary findings suggest that the generalproblems of adequate water supply in Sri Lankaare not limited to science and technologyissues but are also related to otherinefficiencies in planning and managementand lack of research infrastructure, both in the localuniversities and in water agencies. Long-termsolutions to Sri Lanka’s water problems need to besought.

Illangasekare and the NSF team suggestcollaboration between the United States and SriLankan scientists is needed. Their proposedoptions include: sharing data andinformation through workshops andconferences that focus on tsunami effects onagricultural land, vegetation and water; ateam of U.S. water scientists and engineerswith relevant background to travel to Sri Lankafor first-hand assessment of the situation; jointpreparation of research proposals to addressboth basic and applied scientific problems; local

training courses and workshops on specific topics (e.g.,modeling, integrated water management, field monitoring,groundwater exploration and well drilling, etc.); training andworkshops on special science and technology topics to be heldat U.S. universities and water agencies for participants from SriLanka and other tsunami-affected countries; faculty exchangeprograms jointly sponsored by the United States and localuniversities; student exchange programs through summerinternships and undergraduate research opportunitiesprograms; and graduate student exchange programscoordinated through funded research projects.

Illangasekare is currently collaborating with Obesysekaera andSri Lankan NSF coordinator Ananada Gunatillaka to organizetwo information exchange workshops and conferences to beheld this fall. In addition, 14 other groups including threeuniversities, the International Water Management Institute andall leading water agencies in Sri Lanka will participate.Illangasekare will chair the U.S. expert panel.

By Maureen KellerLisa Ferrerio BSc Eng ’97 worked for several software companies beforedeciding to open her own business. As so many Mines alumni do, she knew shecould make it on her own. What’s different about her business, though, is that ithas little to do with engineering. Ferrerio runs a dog hotel and day care, TheDog and I, in Westminster, Colo.

“I love working with dogs,” says Ferrerio, who attended Mines with her servicedog, Kosmo. Ferrerio was born with brittle bone disease and gets around by

wheelchair. “Kosmo lived in thedorm with me. He was not only myarms and legs but he was myconstant companion and bestfriend. I hold a very deep love foranimals and I truly understand theprofound effect they can have onpeople, not only for physicalreasons, but emotionally as well.”

In addition to hanging out withdogs all day, Ferrerio gets to spendmore time with her family than shedid when she was an engineer. Her

mother, stepfather and father are all involved in the business, as well as her bestfriend, Stacey Hunvald BSc Eng ’98, who is an engineer by day and a dog loverby night.

Ferrerio averages 30 to 35 dogs a day at her 5,500-square-foot facility, which caters tothe pampered pooches of mostly young professionals. She offers a 10 percent discountto Mines alumni and one of the kennel rooms for overnight stays is decorated withCSM memorabilia.

Visiting dogs are grouped in large pens by size and temperament. A typical dayincludes playtime, naptime and lots of interaction with other dogs. “Dogs are social

animals,” notes Ferrerio. “They like to interact witheach other.” As we speak, an old golden

retriever watches impassively as two youngboxers wrestle with each other in a

neighboring pen. Ferrerio knows thedogs enjoy their days with her

because she can look through herfront windows and watch them

dragging their owners in fromthe parking lot.

It’s a happy lifesurrounded by adoring

animals and familymembers.

CSM has decreased thenumber of hours required for some degrees – by 12 credits in thecase of geological engineering – but still requires a minimum of135.5 credits for graduation. The CCHE had asked for a six-creditacross-the-board reduction, but has reached a compromise withthe School.

The 10th Athletics Hall of Fame Classhas been announced and includes

four individuals and two teams. Enteringas individuals will be diver JudyAbrahams BSc Eng ’98, football playerTim Baer BSc Eng ’91, wrestler RoyDillow BSc Met ’98 and soccer playerReine Huber BSc Eng ’97. Huber’s olderbrother, Danny BSc Eng ’96, MSc Eng &Tech Mgmt ’03, was enshrined into theCSM Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.

In addition, the 1961 and 1964 CSMwrestling teams will be inducted into theHall of Fame. Both squads finished asnational runners-up. The 2005 Hall ofFame banquet, dinner and inductionceremony will take place Friday, Sept. 10in the Ben Parker Student Center. Theinductees will also be honored athalftime of CSM’s football game againstWestern State at Brooks Field Sept. 11.

Abrahams, a four-year letter winner, isarguably the best female diver to competeat Mines. She won the conference championship in the 3-meterher first three years and captured the conference championship inthe 1-meter as a junior. Abrahams broke her own IntermountainSwimming and Diving League record on the 1-meter (351.60 – 10dives) and her own ISL record on the 3-meter (386.55 – 11 dives)at the conference championships her junior year. She holds theSchool records in the 1- and 3-meter boards.

Baer was the football team’s punter from 1986-89 and earned fourletters. The Outstanding CSM Freshman in 1986, Baer garneredFirst Team All-RMAC as a freshman and sophomore, NAIA FirstTeam All-District honors in 1986 and 1987, KODAK First TeamAll-American accolades in 1986 and NAIA First Team All-American honors in 1986-87.He led all of NCAA II andNAIA Division I with 44.9-yard punting average in 1986,served as a team captain andwon team MVP honors duringhis senior season. Baer’s 89-yard punt is a School record.

Dillow wrestled at 177 poundsas sophomore and junior, 167

pounds as a senior. During that time, heposted a 52-20 mark and captured theNational Championship at 167 poundshis senior season to help Mines finishseventh in the nation as a team. Dillowdefeated four seeded wrestlers to earnthe national title in what was his firsttrip to nationals. He ended senior year at18-5 overall after going 14-7 as asophomore and 20-8 as a junior. Dillowis one of eight CSM wrestlers to win anational title.

Huber, the Outstanding CSM athlete as asenior, played on three conferencechampionship teams in three years. Heled the RMAC in scoring (34 points) as asenior as he finished second in RMAC inboth goals (13) and assists (8). Huberwas named the RMAC Player of the Yearin 1996 and was a First Team All FarWest Region selection. He was named tothe RMAC All-Academic Team in 1995

and 1996 and won the All-AmericanScholar Collegiate Award in 1996. He

finished seventh in the Colorado Athletic Conference in scoring(23 points) as a junior and led the league with nine assists enroute to Second Team All-CAC in 1995. Huber garnered FirstTeam All-RMISL in 1994 when he tallied 27 points on nine goalsand nine assists.

The 1961 and 1964 wrestling teams are being inducted after eachplaced second at the NAIA National Championships. The 1961championships were contested on the campus at CSM.

The 1961 squad had five place winners, including Don MeyersMet E ’63 who was national runner-up, Tom Tisone Met E ’62and Glen Hasse Met E ’62 who each placed third, and Dan Fix

Met E ’64 and Bill Seery Met E’61 who were each fourth.

The 1964 had four placewinners and two nationalchampions. Dave Linder andRich Hickman PRE ’65 eachwon national titles, while Fixand Dewayne Schroeder wereboth national runners-ups.

CSM’s Department of Athletics hosted close to 300 people for theThird Annual Spring Fundraiser Dinner and Auction May 20 inthe Ben Parker Student Center. The evening kicked off at 5 p.m.with a silent auction in the new Slate Cafe. Items up for bidincluded a signed John Elway football, signed balls from the CSMfootball team and men’s and women’s basketball teams, weekendgetaways and gift baskets. Following dinner and a talk fromDenver Nuggets General Manager Kiki Vandeweghe, the guests

were treated to a liveauction with items thatincluded golf trips, fishing trips, a signed Carmelo Anthony jersey,Denver Bronco sideline passes, a day at Bronco Training Camp, anight with the Nuggets and the “Kiki Special,” which included atrip with the Nuggets on their charter plane to any road game,meals with the team and a room in the team hotel.

Friehauf, the record-setting quarterback, inked a deal with thehometown Denver Broncos, while Leger, the School record holder

Each player earned First Team All-American honors in 2004, whileFriehauf was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic ConferenceOffensive Player of the Year and won the Harlon Hill Trophy asthe top player in Division II.

People are surprised when I tell them thatI teach fiction writing at Mines. Somewill remember that Michael Crichtonand Peter Matheson were science majors

in school, but they also tend to assume that the fiction thestudents produce is escapist or science fiction with lots oftechnological bells and whistles.

Sometimes that’s true. Much, but by no means all,of what my students read is escapist fiction, lots of kiss-kiss-bang-bang plot, but not much character development oremotional substance beyond excitement or horror. What apleasant surprise to find that their writing is very differentfrom their leisure reading. It is often profound, emotionaland character driven.

Many of the students love the outdoors and theirfiction isn’t shy when talking about the beauty they see when they hike or go camping. As for their subjects, thescope is as wide as euthanasia, the deaths of grandparents,love, marriage, arson, hunting, environmentalism, hardhoneymoons and the occasional vampire, monster and space alien.

Yet, even there, in outer space, I’m gratified thattheir productions concentrate on character over technology.

The class begins with a selection of stories that Iread to the students – my pick is as wide and deep as I canmake it, showing what the form is capable of producing –funny, sad, tragic, bizarre. I read because I believe that theverbal story long preceded the written. The students readtheir own stories and exercises and, hearing them, are able todiscern bad dialogue and overblown style.

The exercises are open-ended: “Mary Ann didwhat?” “The facts are this but the truth is…?” There are alsodialogue exercises acted out by the class. The open-endedquality elicits a great range of variations in tone, content and

style. I never ask what the theme is in a piece of writing. Thequestion has a “find the peanut and we can all go home”quality I hate. I do give a list of ways by which a piece may bejudged and there are also hilarious examples of bad writing.It’s easier to see what’s to be avoided in bad than goodwriting, which is often highly individualistic.

The question remains: apart from theentertainment value, why have a fiction class at anengineering school?

First: Fiction writing frees the imagination, aventure salutary in its essence.

Second: Fiction writing frees the style of the writer.A good fiction writer will eschew bafflegab, legalese,engineerese and other clumsiness of expression.

Third: The world is waiting for the explication oftechnology in a readable way. Fiction writing is expressiveand tries for conciseness and clarity. A look at thecontributions of good writers to the scientific discourse willprove the point.

Fourth: Fiction writing, always a fine hobby foranyone even into old age when the knees won’t ski and thehips won’t climb, might, done well, provide a second career. Irecommend this with reservations because the money hasnever been good in writing. but as a lagniappe, that littleextra, the delight of having a story published is not to besniffed at and it doesn’t even take a teen-age wind or limb. Itmight also buy a good bottle of champagne.

A deepened writing will eventually deepen reading.That’s good for all of us.

It was the beginning of February and it was

really cold, but not freezing, since the lake was

not completely frozen, though there was an

eggshell-thin sheet of ice covering the surface

and putting any pressure on the ice would break

it, so it really wasn’t that cold; however the wind

was blowing, which made it seem colder, but you

would have been fine with a jacket or thick

sweater, unless the wind picked up, in which case

you would have needed a parka and some thick

insulating boots which you could have purchased

at Sears on sale, but the conditions were just too

cold to be scamperin’ into town when you could

have stayed inside next to the fire, which is hot

enough to melt marshmallows but not hot

enough to melt your hand, although it is a little

dangerous, so it was probably safer to be outside

on a cold day like this, when it wasn’t so cold that

you’d catch a cold so long as you had a jacket or

sweater on. Joe stepped outside and said, “Damn

it’s cold. Where’s my parka?”

How does spending spring break in Mexico in a fishingvillage on the Pacific Ocean sound? Pretty good. Get

academic credit for it to boot? Sounds even better. Anystrings attached? Yup. Mix concrete by hand, dig holes,carry 50-pound bags of mortar, get to know the locals.These are just a few of the tasks our team of 18 (11 of whomwere Mines students) did as part of a spring break HabitatFor Humanity (HFH) Global Village build in Las Varas,Nayarit, Mexico.

The project is an example of service learning inwhich students get off campus, get involved in a communityproject, learn a lot about the people and their communityand the value of service to others, and receive academiccredit for it. While not in the traditional definition of auniversity academic course, service learning has beenaround awhile and is widespread throughout the UnitedStates. If you Google “service learning,” you’ll come up withsome 2,940,000 Internet Web sites containing the phrase.One university promotes its service learning program witha quote from the 19th century British playwright andessayist, George Bernard Shaw:

“This is the true joy of life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead ofa feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.”

Closer to home, President Trefny has emphasizedthat Mines is a “connected learning community.” Servicelearning philosophy would argue that this connectednessextends well beyond the core university family of students,staff, faculty and alumni. Indeed, our project is not the onlyMines service-learning effort. A minor in humanitarianengineering is evolving as a collaboration, headed byProfessors Joan Gosink and Dave Muñoz in the Division ofEngineering and Juan Lucena in the Liberal Arts andInternational Studies Division. Muñoz and ProfessorCathy Skokan BSc Geop ’70 take senior design students allover the world, as well as close to home, in community-development projects.

Our project grew out of a prior HFH build in thesame two Mexican towns. In February 2004, we and Richand Cynthia Bauman went to Mexico as members ofteams sponsored by a consortium of Denver-area churches.The experience was so amazing that the four of us decidedto create an additional team in 2005 that included Mines students.

Las Varas and Chacala are about an hour’s drivenorth of the upscale Pacific Ocean resort Puerto Vallartabut light years away economically. A typical annual wage isless than $1,000. Las Varas has a population of about16,000, close to the size of Golden. The main highwaythrough town is about the only paved road. Travel is by

foot, bicycle, motor scooter and truck. HFH has targetedLas Varas for 90 new simple but comfortable houses. Thecost of materials and local labor – about $6,000 per home –is supplied by Habitat, which in turn accepts donationsfrom the U.S. teams and their sponsors. The homeownersrepay Habitat through a 30-year 0 percent interestmortgage, about $17 per month. Habitat invests theincoming mortgage payments into new homes. In addition,the homeowners contribute 500 hours of sweat equity into their home and other Habitat homes in theirneighborhood. Unlike the Peace Corps or the U.S. Agencyfor International Development (USAID), Habitat’s globalvillage projects do not import U.S. home-building materialsand technology, but rather help the local homeowners andlaborers with their designs and construction techniquesbased on locally supplied materials.

This year, our team was fourth of four teams, the firststarting with bare ground. Our team included 11 studentsfrom Mines: Steve Biles, Roger Brown, Patrick Doyle, BeauWinters, Alisson Waltmann, Lisa Mauger, Eirik Pyhtila,April Worley, Josh Gallon, John Smith and Mike Iwata; twostudents from University of Colorado Boulder: Amy Kirk

To earn one credit of service learning engineering,in addition to the trip to Mexico, the students attendedpresentations on the health and safety dimensions of theproject, researched the demographics and economics of thearea, took a one-evening crash course in conversationalSpanish and submitted a paper on their reactions to theexperience. Some of the thoughts expressed in these final

papers confirmed our hopes that the experience would havea deep impact on the students:

Eirik Pyhtila: This trip served as a reminder thatit’s still possible (even as an engineering student) to enjoyan entire week without a calculator, computer, cell phone,television, or even a calculus book.

You might consider a warm morning shower to berefreshing. Well, you might be surprised to learn thatspending time with people who have not had warm,pressurized showers (and sometimes no shower at all) isalso refreshing. There is a certain spiritual cleansing thatgoes on when you catch people beyond the superficialmasks of their daily lives. During that week, I met 17 peopledirectly at their core, when they were human in every way.And those 17 people only include the group I traveled with.I also met numerous Mexican families who worked forevery penny they earned and took every shower as it came.

When my first shower in Mexico stopped 20 seconds after I put on shampoo, it signified I was on vacation. But for the families I met, that wouldn’t have been anything specialor out of the ordinary. It’s always the small things we takefor granted.

Even something as simple as a spoken language istaken for granted. When I was staring at Mexican twinswhile they tried to explain kickball to me, I realized howmuch work it is to convey thoughts and ideas with bodylanguage and crude attempts at sign language. But all thework made it that much sweeter when I figured out whatthey were explaining.

Roger Brown: This was the first trip from which Ireturned with an optimistic attitude. I felt a camaraderieand partnership with the locals. Whatever service I donatedto the families in Las Varas was more than compensated forby the opportunity to experience the day-to-day life inMexico. I will always remember to experience things formyself and not let textbooks govern my perception ofthe world.

John Smith: The most distressing aspect of thearea in which we stayed was the stark level of wealthdisparity. Million-dollar boats from California mooredwithin swimming distance of shore while skeletal dogsrummaged through garbage and locals burned trash attheir doorsteps. Yet despite such conditions, the people werefriendly and welcoming. My visit to Mexico opened my eyesto the problems of poverty in the world.

[Holy Week] probably put significant strain on many of thetown’s regular residents.

Getting used to the lack of city infrastructure wasa big part of understanding how life was different inMexico. Chacala’s sewer system and water supply hadobvious limitations. The roads that our four-wheel-drivetaxis used gave me an appreciation for how much thegovernment is needed to contribute to the improvement ofthe area. Improving the cities for its residents seemed to below on the government’s priority list, or perhaps beyond itsmeans. The same was evident when we drove by the localdump every afternoon on the way back from work andwitnessed the towering smokestack from burning garbage.

Our adventure in Mexico also helped meappreciate events in life that aren’t school or work. The hardlabor and stress-free afternoons were refreshing comparedto my normal schedule. There was a totally different feelingjust spending time in a country that doesn’t have the same24-hour-a-day, always-on-the-move mentality as the United States.

This trip has shown me the value of service inlearning about other areas. I don’t think I could have hadthe same experience without stacking bricks and movingdirt. It was fascinating to watch the way these beautifulhouses went up without the use of many of the technologiesthat we usually associate with construction of that sort.This trip has made me want to pursue other build projects

in the future. I hope to keep volunteering projects like thisas a regular fixture in my life.”

April Worley: I was presented with one of the mostrewarding opportunities and experiences of my life duringthis last spring break. As the last team, we helped constructroofs and lay floors and patios. We worked closely withmasons in laying brick for the ceilings and placing themortar, which we mixed, between the bricks. When we left,there was only minimal masonry work left to complete thehouses. We also worked closely with the families that willoccupy the houses. We helped entertain the children andworked with the adults and really got to know them. By theend of the week, their families felt like our families. Thiswas one of the most eye-opening experiences I couldimagine. We got to see and experience Mexico’s standard ofliving, which put things in a new perspective and made meappreciate what we have here. In some respects, I thinkMexicans are luckier than we are. Most have a lot of familynearby and also have a lot of friends who are like family.They are all about helping each other. I noticed thateveryone was nice and caring, even to us, completestrangers. If everyone here followed the examples of thepeople with whom we spent an incredible week, thiscountry would be a much better place in which to live.

The Mexican families were incredibly appreciative.It didn’t seem that we did that much, but to them it meantthe world. These were the first homes these families willown. The people were so welcoming; they took us in andtreated us like family. I was touched by their generosity andappreciation. I wished I could have done much more.

The trip was hard work, fun times and we bonded withthe others on our team. By day, we worked side by sidebuilding the houses and every night we did something newincluding clubbing at discos, playing soccer and rugby onthe beach, creating a bonfire, walking the beach andenjoying the ocean. This trip was only a week of my life, butit changed me for a lifetime.

It was gratifying to us as team leaders to see theresponsiveness and appreciation the students showed to thepeople in Las Varas and Chacala. Given the poverty andeconomic disparities that were evident all around us, wethink the students came away with a sense of realcontribution and accomplishment. We are reminded of thequote by Eleanor Roosevelt: “It is better to light a singlecandle than to curse the darkness.”

In summer 2004, I vowed to put a greater efforttoward community service and volunteering. Helping withHabitat for Humanity in Mexico was a unique experience inthat the efforts I put forward had a direct influence on thewell being of the less fortunate. The team’s efforts helped in the formation of something tangible, somethingsignificant, and our progress was easily visible from day to day.

It was eye-opening to step outside the research laband into an area where priorities lay not so much inscientific discovery, but simply survival. I often foundmyself contemplating the root causes of poverty in theseparts of Mexico. Immigration to the U.S. has been describedas Mexico’s most severe problem and this became clear afterhearing numerous accounts of family members and othersseeking refuge across the border.

As part of a team, I’ve never felt more like familywith another group of people. On our first day, the projectsupervisor referred to us as brothers and sisters. We workedside by side and shared the great experience of Mexicotogether; I think “brothers and sisters” is a fittingdescription. It seemed as though each of us had somethingto offer Mexico and Mexico treated us well for it.

Alisson Waltmann: When I left for Mexico I hadan idea of what I wanted to do with my life. You know, theusual: finish school, get a job, start a family and then maybego back to school. Since the trip to Mexico, all that haschanged. Now I feel that there is so much more I could doto help people less fortunate. Now I'm considering the PeaceCorps or something else that really makes a difference. I wantto help people.

Going to Mexico, I knew that we were going tohelp those who are less fortunate, but I still had no idea.Working on the houses and seeing how the familiesresponded to us made me feel overwhelmingly good. I felt

that I made a difference, not only in their lives, but in mine,too. There were times that I wished that I could have donemore, but because of the type of work and theunavailability of tools and supplies, it wasn’t possible. AfterI began talking to people, I realized that volunteering ourtime to help meant more to them than they could express.

Following the trip, many things in my life havechanged. I am more appreciative of what I have and thingsthat used to seem important now no longer mean much.There is a lot of pressure for Americans to get more, workmore, and have more, more of everything. After working inMexico, it just seems ridiculous. Family to me has alwaysbeen important, but this trip re-enforced the importance. Isaw how much the people of Las Varas have, which isn’t alot, yet they are still happy. I think it’s because theysurround themselves with families and friends.

Lisa Mauger: One of my greatest accomplishmentsthat week came in the form of an adjusted world view.Getting to know Chacala was important for me. It was anamazingly beautiful little fishing village, but also a thrivingvacation spot. It was easy to understand why this placewould be a wonderful vacation spot, but it was alsoapparent that the influx of visitors took a toll on the littletown. By the end of the week, the beach was decorated withtrash and tourists were moving around at all hours of theday and night. While the city was a great vacation for all ofits campers, ourselves included, that week of celebration

The Senior Design Trade Fair held inApril highlighted innovative and

ambitious projects completed by seniorstudents enrolled in the Division ofEngineering’s capstone design course. Theprojects featured a variety of engineeringsolutions, including alternative energysystems, biomechanical devices andstructural designs, among others. Workingwith a wide range of clients, the studentsdemonstrated the far-reaching impact oftheir education at Mines. In addition tosolving an authentic engineering problem,the teams demonstrated their versatility asthey dealt with real-worldissues such as budgeting,fundraising, projectmanagement and clientcommunications.

Earning final scores withintwo points of each other, thetop four teams in thecompetition faced a tight race.So tight, in fact, that the toptwo teams – the CentennialElementary School and JewelCave Geohazard projects – tiedfor first place with each team earning a 90percent rating. Cathy Skokan BSc Geop’70, MSc Geop ’72, PhD Geop ’75, facultyadviser for both of these winning teams,noted that successful design teams shareimportant characteristics. They conductthorough research, evaluate multiplealternatives, and arrive at optimal choicesby considering both cost and functionality.

The senior design judges indicated thatanother quality, clear and consistentcommunication, was also a key factor inthe top teams’ success.

One first-place Senior Design teampartnered with fourth-grade teacher IngridDaniel at Centennial Elementary School inColorado Springs to engage her students

in science. The team was challenged notonly with creating hands-on scienceprojects that were educational, but alsowith managing a large group of excitable9-year-olds. By sharing their enthusiasmfor science with children frompredominantly low-income families, theMines team, whom the fourth-gradersrefer to as their “science friends,” inspiredthe students to enjoy the study of scienceand perhaps consider it as a future career.Daniel notes that since the Mines teambecame involved in her classroom, herstudents now often ask her, “How can you

prove that?”— a question that proves theyare learning to think like scientists.

Mines alumnus Phil Cloues EM ’66,MSc Min Ec ’71, of the National ParkService, presented the other first-placeteam with a unique engineering problem.South Dakota’s Jewel Cave, thesecond longest cave in the world,requires a new structure toprevent pieces of the cave ceilingfrom falling onto visitors as theyexit the elevator shaft in thedepths of the cave. The existingwooden structure feeds invasivebacteria within the cave and isnot ideally suited for anenvironment with 100 percenthumidity. The Jewel CaveGeohazard Project team testednumerous materials for theunusual conditions and deviseda free-standing stainless steelstructure topped with a geo-net.Their design minimizes impact on thenatural structure of the cave and has thepotential to last at least 50 years andperhaps indefinitely. Pending budgetapproval, the National Park Service plans

to implement key components of theteam’s design.

CSM’s Mini Baja team placed second inthe competition, just one point behind theJewel Cave andCentennialElementaryteams. Theteam designedan all-terrainvehicle forentry into theSociety ofAutomotiveEngineers(SAE) MiniBaja 100competition, which consists of staticevents – presentations on cost and design– along with events that test the vehicle’sacceleration, maneuverability, enduranceand ability to handle extreme terrain. Atthe competition, held in June in Arizona,the team placed 14th out of 131 in thestatic events, and finished the four-dayengineering design challenge in arespectable 53rd place.

Over the past three years, under theguidance of Engineering Professor JulieVanLaanen, Senior Design teams havedeveloped and implemented solar-powered lighting and water-pumpingsystems for remote villages in Belize. This

year’s teamfinished third forits work indesigningenhancements tothe systems andinstalling acharging stationfor the villagersto power-uptheir cell phones– their onlymeans of real-timecommunicationwith distant

cities. Additionally,the team taught villagers the basics ofworking with electricity. With thisknowledge, the villagers will be able totroubleshoot and make repairs to theirsolar electrical system.

When Holcim Inc., one of theworld’s leading suppliers of

cement, aggregates and concrete, wantedto develop an alternative fuel systemdesign for the coal-fired rotary cementkiln at their plant in Florence, Colo., thecompany looked to Mines to get the jobdone. Mines might not have been such anobvious choice if it weren’t for DaveMuñoz, Division of Engineering interimdirector. Muñoz approached Holcimrepresentatives at a career fair in the fall of2003. In keeping with Mines’ commitmentto maintaining a meaningful connectionbetween engineering education, industrypractice and research needs, he askedoutright, “What can Mines do for you?”

Seeing the strategic advantage of havingthe research power and innovative energyof a university at its service, Holcim tookMuñoz up on the offer. Ralf Osswald, vicepresident for manufacturing, and RobDavies, manager of Holcim’s Portlandplant in Florence, conceived a project thatwould process and convey packagingwaste from large operations like DenverInternational Airport to partially replacecoal in the Portland plant’s rotary kiln.Osswald saw the partnership as a way tofurther Holcim’s commitment tosustainable development, benefit from thefresh ideas generated by forward-thinkingengineers, and provide students with anopportunity to work within theorganizational and budgetary parametersthey would face in the business world.

The alternative fuels project has beenmore than an academic exercise. In early2004, Holcim entered into a fee-for-service contract with Mines, just as if ithad hired an independent engineeringfirm. Twenty-two students worked on theproject in multidisciplinary teamscomprising civil, electrical and mechanicalspecialists assigned to specific engineeringtasks. An integration team composed ofleaders of each functional team metweekly during the process developmentphase to review each subteam’s progressand to ensure that their designs meshed.The entire alternative fuels team metdirectly with Holcim executives to presentproject updates and finalrecommendations.

Mines’ design team surpassed theexpectations of Holcim’s executive panel.According to the team’s faculty adviser,DickBurczyk,Holcimanticipatedthat thestudentswouldpresent ageneral,conceptualplan, andwas pleasantly surprised when it foundthat the students actually went muchfurther, providing specifications suitablefor presenting to subcontractors as theywent on to solicit design-build bids for theproject. The alternative fuels project is ahigh priority for Holcim, which plans toconstruct the system according to thestudents’ design.

The alternative fuels project that beganin 2004 was the first of its kind betweenHolcim and Mines, and the partnershipcontinues with three new projects in theworks. Students will design a magnesiumchloride spill containment system, a fossilfuel blending system and a metering andconveying system for feeding chipped tiresto the kiln preheater tower. Each of theseprojects involves expense reimbursementto the School, plus an incentive based onthe cost savings that result from thestudents’ designs.

Since 1998, 14 Mines graduates havegone on to careers with Holcim. As TeresaLow, Holcim’s university relationsmanager, puts it, “Our involvement withkey engineering schools on projects likethe rotary kiln conversion helps us tobuild our ‘bench strength’ – to build thefuture of our organization.” Osswald adds,“These partnerships create value for bothColorado School of Mines and Holcim.We provide meaningful work experiencesfor students and Mines provides us with new paradigms for solving ourengineering problems. We are confident inhiring Mines graduates because we knowthey are unmatched in their honesty andintegrity and, of course, the tremendoustechnical competencies they bring to our company.”

Seniors Put Engineering Ingenuity to Work Holcim Inc. Teams with CSM Senior Design

Team member Kelly Rhoades noted thevillagers’ excitement about learning newtechniques for improving their quality oflife. Since the water pump was introduced,

young girls can go to school instead ofhaving to haul water for their families’households, and the solar-powered lighting

allows children to complete theirhomework after dark. Teammate PaulaSchmitz remarked that the experience ofimplementing engineering solutions in thedeveloping world has shown her that “evenwhat we consider the smallest and simplestdevices can make a great difference” inpeople’s lives.

Colorado School of Mines extends aworld of thanks to Bob Vickery PE ’62 whocontributed $10,000 to the BelizeHumanitarian Engineering Project. Bob’sgift funded the team’s travel to Belize tomake repairs, install a charging station andeducate villagers about electricity andirrigation technologies.

difference. The Iraqis have a tough road ahead. Their personalstories of struggle, even imprisonment for political beliefs, evokecompassion and humility. As I listened to President Trefny talkabout Mines’ noble purpose, it was evident to me that Mines livesup to that noble purpose of helping to better the world. And onthis day in April, as it does every other day, Mines continues toprove that it has a big heart, and I am thrilled to now be a part of it.

As I write this, commencement and reunion have just taken place.It was a thrill to have so many of you here on campus and it is mysincere hope that more of you will return in the future. We triedto offer something for everyone: various department open housesand tours; a fabulous presentation by Bob Hedlund ’75 on trans-formational development in Central Asia, which focused on hisNGO’s humanitarian engineering efforts; Professor Emeritus BobWeimer led a tour along the campus’s Geology Trail, nowdesignated an Earthcache site (an adventure game for GPS users);Eric May ’99 discussed investing in today’s markets; a meet-the-students panel discussion; a joint faculty symposium by Dr. DavidWald, Understanding the Dec. 26, 2004 Great Sumatra Earthquakeand Tsunami, and Dr. Tissa Illangasekare, Tsunami Impact andScientific and Engineering Challenges for Recovery – Case of SriLanka; an “Inside the Boardroom" panel discussion with membersof the Board of Trustees and Foundation board, David Wagner,John Coors ’77, Terrance Tschatschula, and Marshall Crouch ’67;capping off with a reception with members of the CSMAA board.

In my travels I have visited with CSMAA sections in GrandJunction, Colo., Midland, Texas, Salt Lake City, Bone Valley, Fla.,and Houston. I hope to visit San Franciso, Calgary, Tulsa,Houston, Phoenix, Southern California, Dallas and other areasover the next few months. I hope to meet you at one of our events,either in your region, at a conference, or here on campus.

While I am working on several endeavors to strengthen theAlumni Association, I also want to incorporate your thoughts andideas into the planning efforts. Stay tuned for a survey or series ofsurveys, the results of which will help me to chart our collectivecourse. In the meantime, if you haven’t renewed your membershipor have never joined the Alumni Association, now is an ideal timeto lend me your support so that we have adequate resources tofulfill and strengthen our service to you.

CSM Alumni Association No ordinary day at the officeDear Alumni and Friends,

Five months into my tenure as the new director of alumni relations and I have discoveredthat no two days in the office are alike. Each day brings new opportunities and new faces;some opportunities are more serendipitous than others.

The day was February 22. Ed Crabtree EM ’60, president of the CSM Alumni Associationfrom 2000-01, called with a request for help. I had first met Ed the week before when Ihad invited the Past-Presidents Advisory Committee to share experiences with me overlunch. Previously, Ed had called to weigh in on what he considers my most difficulthurdle: growth of the Alumni Association membership base (more on that later).

With the Alumni Association and the School more closely tied for the benefit of bothorganizations, it seemed a natural request for Ed to ask if I could arrange for a group ofIraqi delegates to visit Mines in lateApril. Through Joe Rice, formermayor of Glendale, Colo., who hadcompleted a tour of duty in Iraq, Edlearned of the Baghdad-DenverRegion Partnership. It began in June2004 when First Lady Laura Bushannounced at the G8 Summit thatthrough Sister Cities International, sixcities in Iraq and the United Stateswould be paired as international partners. Sister Cities International, according to its pressrelease, “promotes peace through mutual respect, understanding and cooperation – oneindividual, one community at a time.” The Denver Regional Council of Governments(DRCOG) was linked with the provincial and city councils of Baghdad, Iraq, forhumanitarian assistance projects. According to DRCOG, “The purpose of the Baghdad-Denver partnership is to promote the exchange of ideas and understanding betweengovernment officials, citizens, college faculty and students, businesses and nonprofitorganizations. The primary benefit to Baghdad is exposure to the systems of government,education, business and nonprofits in a democratic society. This assistance is muchneeded after more than 35 years of repression and isolation by the dictatorship of SaddamHussein and the Ba’ath Party. The primary benefit to the Denver area is increasedunderstanding of the culture and history of Iraq and the Middle East.”

After attending a DRCOG meeting with Bill Engel Met E ’60, I learned that a group of 20delegates would be in the Denver area for two weeks in April to visit with severalorganizations and government officials. Some of those delegates also expressed interest invisiting Mines to discuss education and to learn about GIS (geographic informationsystems). President Trefny spent the better part of a morning talking with the delegatesand Craig Van Kirk graciously gave a presentation on the Petroleum EngineeringDepartment that he heads. Keith Turner, professor emeritus of the Geology andGeological Engineering Department, gave a presentation on GIS and Jim Whitfield BScMath ’85 of Hi Country Wire and Telephone was on hand to field questions relevant totelecommunications. CSM Registrar Lara Medley put us in touch with our one Iraqistudent, who enthusiastically agreed to join us for lunch. Through a collaborative effort,Mines extended the hand of generosity and showed its willingness to help make a

WILLIAM K.BOWIE EM ’55died March 31,2004 at age 77.He served inthe U.S. Armyduring WorldWar II. Hemarried CarolHailey in 1946.Bowie wasemployed as a mining engineer working atthe Allen Mine until his retirement in 1993.He enjoyed gardening and was an avidreader. He is survived by his widow,children Kit, Bruce and William, sevengrandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

CHARLES O.CLARK

PE ’49 ofLittleton, Colo.,died Feb. 25 atage 84. Born inNess County,Kan., Clarkgraduated fromhigh schoolthere in 1938.When WorldWar II broke out he went to work atDouglas Aircraft in California. In 1942 heenlisted in the Army Air Corps, where heflew 35 missions in the European theater asco-pilot on a B-17. He was awarded the AirMedal and several Oak Leaf Clusters for hisservice with the 95th bomb group stationedin Horham, England. After the war, Clarkattended Mines. After graduation, he wasemployed by Standard Oil of Californiaand worked in various locations andpositions in the West, retiring in 1977 after27 years. He then was an engineeringconsultant with Helton Engineering fortwo years. Clark was married to BettyMarhofer and in July 2004 they celebrated60 years of marriage. His widow, twodaughters, two grandchildren and fivegreat-grandchildren survive him.

HENRY A.“HANK”EMERY JR. PE’56 died earlierthis year after amassive heartattack. He was79. Emeryearned hisdegree fromMines aftergraduatingfrom University of Maine. He was apioneer in the field of geographicinformation systems (GIS), analysis andcomputer modeling of infrastructure andrelated financial systems, especially for theutilities industry. He coined the now-popular term AM/FM (automatedmapping/ facilities management) that is acornerstone of current GIS technology andapplications. Emery was also a well-knownauthor and consultant.

DALE DAVID KERSTETTER GEOL E ’39 diedof congestive heart failure Aug. 29 at hisdaughter’s home in Germantown, Md. Hewas 86. While at Mines, he was a memberof Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Gamma Epsilon,Alpha Tau Omega and the “M” club. Aretired geophysical engineer, Kerstetterworked for the Standard Oil Company ofVenezuela exploring for oil from 1939 to1943. He returned to the United States in1943 to work for the U.S. Navy. After WorldWar II, he remained in the Washington,D.C., area working for the Naval OrdnanceLaboratory in various capacities, retiring in1976. During that time, he received twoMeritorious Civilian Service awards andthe Navy Superior Civilian Service award.Kerstetter also is listed in the Who’s Who inEngineering and American Men of Science.After retiring, Kerstetter worked part-timeas an engineering consultant with SystemsResearch Corp. He was president of theWoodmoor Citizens Association andpresident of the Manor Village HomesAssociation. He was a long-time member ofSt. Bernadette’s Catholic Church and St.

Patrick’s Catholic Church. He was adedicated traveler and golfer and was amember of Manor Country Club.Kerstetter is survived by three daughters,seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

DALE D.KOEPKE PE’45 died Dec.11, 2002, inVictorville,Calif. He was81. Aftergraduation,Koepke workedin Colorado,married, andhad two

children. He then moved to California towork for Union Oil Company designingrefinery equipment and supervisinginstrument installations, operation andmaintenance. In 1957, he moved toBeckman Instruments Inc. to do sales,training and engineering. He divorced thatsame year and to keep busy, spent the nextthree years learning Hebrew and the GreekNew Testament. In 1962, Koepke marriedYvonne Dean, who had two girls, and was awonderful father to them. In 1966 hejoined Kingmann White Inc. and didmarketing, product forecasting, evaluationsand market research. He was also aninstrument-rated pilot. In 1972, Koepke,with the help of his accountant wife,started his own business, D-SystemControls. In 1973, he joined U.S. Borax andremained with them until retirement in1986. He loved that job in which he trainedmen who wanted to get ahead and out ofthe labor pool. His instruction combinedclassroom math and job field experience,resulting in first-class electrician ratings forthose who finished. Koepke is survived byhis widow, a son, a daughter, sixgrandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was a62-year member of the American Institute of Mining andMetallurgical Engineers and was active in the Grand Junction chapter.He was a major benefactor of the School, a member of the Sun CityCountry Club and a charter member of the Bookcliff Country Club.Woodard is survived by his widow, two sons and a grandson.

GEORGE E. HULPIAU PRE ’49 died May 3in Sun City West, Ariz. He was 85. Hulpiauwas born in Buffalo, N.Y., and spent hischildhood there. He was a bombardier inthe Air Force during World War II and wasstationed in England and North Africa. Healso was stationed in Bengasi andparticipated in the low-level bombing ofthe Ploesti refineries. After he wasdischarged, Hulpiau married Marion Norman, whom he’d metwhile stationed in Casper, Wyo. He entered CSM in January 1946.Hulpiau, his wife and daughter were one of the first families tooccupy a trailer in the field house. Later, they lived in ProspectPark and George was voted the first mayor. After graduation,Hulpiau’s first job was with Sinclair Oil Company in Wyoming. In1968 they transferred him to Venezuela to manager the El ChaureRefinery in Puerto la Cruz. Later, he was transferred to Houstonwhere he worked in the Pasadena, Texas, refinery. Hulpiau retiredin 1980 and worked for a short time for the Strategic Oil Reservein Texas and Louisiana. He enjoyed all sports, especially golf, andhe loved to travel. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marion,four daughters, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

BHP Billiton Creates Indigenous StudentsScholarship Fund

BHP Billiton Limited, the world’s largest diversified naturalresource company, has given $300,000 to CSM to establish anIndigenous Students Scholarship Fund. The company wishes toencourage scholars of indigenous heritage from the communitiesin which it operates to pursue careers in the mining industry. Inaddition to scholarship funds, recipients will also have theopportunity to intern at one of BHP Billiton’s operations in the Americas.

“BHP Billiton’s generous gift will put a university educationwithin reach for many talented indigenous students,” saysPresident John U. Trefny. “The creation of this scholarshipdemonstrates our shared commitment to increasing theparticipation of under-represented minorities in engineering andthe applied sciences.”

Over the past 15 years, the minority student population at Mines has nearly doubled, growing from 7.5 percent of theundergraduate population in 1990 to 14 percent for the currentacademic year. The BHP Billiton Indigenous Students ScholarshipFund will enhance the School’s ability to attract scholars fromindigenous communities and help ensure their academic success.

“We hope that this scholarship program will encourage manyindigenous students, over time, to pursue rewarding andchallenging careers within the mining industry,” says MarcusRandolph BSc Min ’77, president of diamonds and specialtyproducts for BHP Billiton, who is a distinguished graduate of theSchool. “By also providing scholarship recipients with a corporateinternship, we will help strengthen the company’s ties with thelocal communities that support our operations.”

’80 died Feb.9 in Houstonafter a long,courageousbattle withcancer. AtMines, Leewas a memberof Blue Key and Sigma Phi Epsilon. He alsowas business manager of the Oredigger andin 1975 was E-Day chairman. Aftergraduation, Lee served in the U.S. ArmyCorps of Engineers until 1980, when hewas discharged as a first lieutenant. Leethen began a 24-year career as anexploration geophysicist with Chevron(later ChevronTexaco). He worked inColorado, California, Scotland, Australia,New Guinea, Venezuela and Texas. He wasactive in the American Association ofPetroleum Geologists, the Society ofExploration Geophysicists, the RockyMountain Association of Geologists andthe Houston Geophysical Society. He alsowas a licensed Professional Geologist inWyoming. Lee was an avid modelrailroader and railroad historian. Hebelonged to railroad clubs in Colorado,California, Australia and was a sustainingmember of the Union Pacific HistoricalAssociation and a lifetime member of theColorado Railroad Museum. Lee is survivedby his wife of 28 years, Kay BSc Phy ’75, ason and a sister.

KENNETH R. PETERSEN BSC CPR ’83 diedDec. 23 of injuries received in an autoaccident. He was 44. Petersen was theowner and operator of Thai Kitchen inTemecula, Calif., and in his spare timeenjoyed gardening. He is survived by hiswife of four years, Jariya, his parents and a sister.

JAMES E. SCHMUCK MET E ’42 died March11 at home in Windsor, Colo. He was 85.When he was a small child, Schmuck’s

family moved from Illinois to Denverwhere he grew up. In 1941 he marriedElizabeth Loos, a grade school companionand neighbor. After graduation fromMines, Schmuck served in the U.S. ArmyCorps of Engineers in the Philippinesduring World War II. Afterwards, heworked for Rotary Steel Foundry in Denveruntil 1955, when he moved his family toLongmont, Colo., to establish a newfoundry. In 1967, Schmuck and his wiferelocated to Chicago to work for GriffinWheel, then to Hibbing, Minn. Having hadenough of the cold weather, the Schmucksthen moved to Arizona where Jim workedfor Capitol Castings for the next 15 years.He retired in 1985. In 1995, Schmuckreturned to Colorado to be near hischildren and grandchildren. He loved totravel, was a silversmith and woodcarver,cheered the Broncos and Avs, followedpolitics and loved model trains. He had aloving family and devoted friends.Schmuck is survived by his widow, a son, adaughter, four grandsons and seven great-grandchildren.

DAVID B. SCHULZ PE ’49, of Wichita Falls,Texas, died June 10,2004 at age 83. Hewas a retiredpetroleum engineer.Schulz served in theU.S. Army Air Corpsduring World War IIand was a formerPOW. His wife,Betty, and a daughterpreceded him death.He is survived by

three sons, three daughters, a brother andnumerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

DAVID R. WILSON PRE ’53 died Aug. 13,2004 at age 74. He was killed instantly in anautomobile accident in which he was struckby a drunk driver. Wilson was born andraised in Denver and attended North HighSchool where he lettered in wrestling.When Dave and his twin brother Bob

PRE ’52 were very young, their motherknew they would attend Mines and thatdecision was never questioned. While atMines, Wilsonwas a memberof KappaSigma andTheta Tau. Healso wrestledand lettered inbaseball. Heenjoyed hisyears at Minesand alwaysattended hisreunions.After graduation, Wilson worked forHumble Oil and Refining Company inTexas, but soon left to join the Navy. Heattained the rank of lieutenant junior gradeand was stationed in Nevada and Japan.After retiring in 1957, Wilson went to workfor Union Carbide in Texas. In 1969 hejoined the Upjohn Company and DowChemical. After retiring in 1993, hecontinued to consult in energyconservation. Wilson enjoyed playing golfand played some famous courses inScotland. He also sang with communitychoirs, an interest he shared with hisdaughter. Wilson is survived by his widow,Sandra, two sons, a daughter, a stepson, astepdaughter, six grandchildren and sixstep-grandchildren.

CHARLES VERNON WOODARD MET E ’44died April 11 at his home in GrandJunction, Colo., at age 82. After graduationfrom Mines, Woodward, a nativeColoradan, became a millingsuperintendent for Bunker Hill andSullivan in Metaline Falls, Wash. He laterjoined forces with his brother, Frank Met E’42, in a gold mining venture in Telluride.He was an independent uranium mineoperator on Beaver Mesa from 1948-1985.In 1951, Woodard married ShirleyHammond in Denver. They lived in a logcabin in Beaver Mesa during the earlyyears, raised two sons and were happilymarried for 53 years. Woodard enjoyed
