Kevin Flanagan writes...

This hot weather is throwing up some very interesting things. As a Rector / Vicar of two very different churches, I go to one and I’m asked why I’m not praying harder for rain, the other one, I have the sun wor-shippers asking me to pray that it continues.

Sometimes you just can’t win!

But there is no doubt that the weather as I write this in August is having a serious effect, and not just on us.

This morning our dog was caught with a baby hedgehog, or hoglet, in its mouth.

Thankfully he was persuaded to drop it before any harm seemed to be done, but we did wonder how such a tiny thing was alone, and in the open, at eight o’clock in the morning?

It seems that lack of water and food, (hard ground can make it difficult for hedgehogs to obtain much of their natural diet of slugs, worms etc.) means that some mothers are forced to abandon their young early.

We managed to put it in a box, and a lady from the Hedgehog rescue society came and took it off our hands.

A few hours later we had a phone call, the hoglet was very young with its eyes just opening, but it seemed to be doing OK, despite its scary experi-ence with the dog.

Being a she they have christened it ‘Geraldine’, what else could you call a hedgehog from a vicarage garden!

They will care for it now until it is able to be released back into the wild.

As Christians we believe that we have a responsibility to look after the world that God has made, when we hear of global warming, the seas full of plastics etc it can all seem just too much.

But we can all do our small part, whether it is rescuing a Geraldine or

simply using less plastic (and kicking up a fuss when our local shop

plastic wraps everything), we can make a difference for our children and

our grandchildren.

NEWS From Wolston Parish Council

At the August Parish Council meeting there was a varied agenda and interesting updates on the progress report.

Some people may not know that sited on Dyers Lane recreation

ground, near the pedestrian entrance, is the Gas House, a

facility which was originally moved from next to the old Derry bus

shelter. Transco paid rent arrears to the Parish Council in 1999,

and a 25-year lease was agreed with rent reviews due every 5

years. The amount paid as rent for having the facility on Parish

Council owned land has increased over the years and Cadent,

who have replaced Transco, have agreed to the Clerk’s request

to review the rent figure to ensure it is in line with current rent

prices.

Following a request for a safety rail near the Baptist Chapel bus

shelter, County Highways at Warwickshire County Council was

approached by the Clerk. Having checked injury accident rec-

ords for this stretch of School Street, WCC have suggested that

it is highly unlikely that they would introduce pedestrian guard

railing as it would restrict the footpath available to pedestrians,

especially parents with children or mobility scooter users.

WCC have agreed to look at the road markings around the

village to ensure that they are still legible - including the zig-zag

lines for the pedestrian crossing, lined parking bays on the

bridge near the chip shop, and markings on Lammas Court.

Although there is an excellent indoor bowls facility provided at

the Village Hall, one afternoon per week, the idea of provision of

an outdoor Bowls area had been put forward as an agenda item.

The Clerk had obtained some details from Dales Sport Services

and, following discussion of possible locations within the village

and potential costs, a working group of Councillors was set up to

come back to the Parish Council with suggestions and ideas for

how it might be possible to take it forward. Residents who would

be interested in outdoor bowls in the village should initially

contact the Clerk,at the Parish Office.

There was positive feedback on the first Summer Holiday Play Scheme event. The Play Ranger had been brilliant not only with the 4-12 year olds but had also got all the parents/grandparents involved as well. A request, from two members of the public, to establish an over-18s football team on the Dyer’s Lane recreation ground, was met with genuine support from Councillors. Another positive issue on the recreation ground is the impact of the new play equipment, which is being well used. The ‘snagging’ work undertaken by Sovereign, has been completed and as usual the new equipment will be included in the annual inspection of the Parish Council’s play facilities. This Health and Safety record will support equipment checks which the Lengthsman regularly does. In advance of the centenary marking the end of the Great War, Boden and Ward will be undertaking the cleaning of the War Memorial in the next few weeks. There will also be a new bench installed to commemorate the centenary and to give villagers the chance to sit and reflect on the sacrifice of those whose names are recorded on the memorial, and their families.

The Wolston Youth Project, based at the Leisure and Community Centre, is open on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 9pm, during term time. The club provides a range of activities such as pool, table tennis, table football, table-top activities such as art and crafts, traditional games, cake and biscuit decoration, plus football on the all-weather pitch. Specific work is completed ad-dressing the needs of the young people to enhance their knowledge and awareness of substance misuse (drugs and alco-hol) with the aim of keeping them safe and enhancing their social skills. Our thanks to Carl, Alan, Louise, Laurence and Isobel, who should be proud of the comments received from young people who have attended the club. “Friends and I heard good things about the club”, “love it”, “love youth club and always will”, “cool” “fantastic staff”, “great”, “awesome”, ”excellent 10/10”, “love it”.

We hope that this brief snapshot will be of interest to you all.

“Rosedale”, (“The Old Doctors’

House” Wolston)

Lived in by generations of Wolston doctors, this house has been lovingly restored over many years by Anne and Ray Williams.

Many interesting items have been found during restoration including “Completely Easy” a book of biblical texts found under the attic floor with the name Sarah and the date 1789 written on it.

This and the architectural features; tall chimneys, the beautifully propor-tioned rooms with their fireplaces, wide and elegant doors and windows suggest the house was built in the Georgian period, in around 1767. The Bell-Push system, by which servants could be summoned to any room, was carefully hidden in walls and under floors, where it remains. Typical of those days, the servants’ working and living quarters were less decorative!

The Herne family resided there from 1767 to the mid 1840’s. The female members were always recorded as the property owners, but the men were landed gentry and described as “Gentlemen “ in documents of the day. The last Herne died in 1844.

The first resident recorded in the Census was William Ashwell, a solicitor, in the 1850s. Followed by Dr Blanchard 1861, Dr Torrance 1871, Dr Thompson 1881, Dr Wilson 1891, Dr Heffernan 1901, (a keen cricketer and amateur dramatic actor), Dr Richardson 1911 who treated Tom Everton (a local carrier from Brandon). Tom was run over by his own cart when his horse had been alarmed by boys, on a visit to Coventry, who had thrown orange peel at it. Dr Richardson was sadly killed at the front line in 1914.

The Equity Lodge of Oddfellows whereby village men (only) could pay for tokens to be redeemed in a medical emergency was set up in early 1900s, prior to the NHS, with the help of the local doctor. People would donate tokens where people in need had none.

The local hunt met here in the yard next to the Coach House.

Local hearsay has it that Churchill once visited Rosedale as one doctor’s guest.

Men’s Breakfast Meeting

Third Saturday of the month at 9.00 am St Margaret’s Church Rooms, Wolston

On the 21st July the Arise Men's Breakfast group met with 20 men coming together for a fine cooked breakfast and to share

each other's company.

Gordon Yates spoke about “Lend With Care” part of CARE International. Lend With

Care enables entrepreneurs in poor countries to obtain “start up” loans for small business enterprises. Lend With Care puts information about the entrepreneurs and their business idea on their website and people who want to support contribute the money through the website, starting at £15, which is then lent to the people in the poor countries to invest in their business. The small donors get their loan repaid over time and are then free to re-invest that loan in a new project or take back the cash. There is no limit to the number of projects you could support in this way and the percentage of successful projects is very high. For more details go to lendwithcare.org Those present were so impressed with the scheme that it could be offered as one of our charities next year.

The next meeting will be on Saturday 15th September at the usual time of 9.00

a.m. when the speaker will be Dr. Renol Koshy, a surgeon from University Hospital

near Wolston who will be talking about his work there. We will be having our usual

full cooked breakfast, with cereal, tea & coffee for £2.50. Everyone is very welcome

to join us for food and friendship. Please contact Peter Bridges on 02476543410 if

you wish to come (so we can get enough food).

Wolston WI News

Analize Jones gave us a very interesting talk about her native Phllipines begin-ning with a few facts about the geography of the islands, their industries which lead to the main part of the talk about how the handbags she was selling were made. She had brought with her a good selection of handbags which of course members enjoyed looking at and buying. It was interesting to see slides of the way the bags are made and how the local people created ways to make the work easier. Even so each stage is done by different people and it can take two weeks to complete a bag. She also showed us a garment made from the leaves of the pineapple plant which looked very delicate, but she said was very durable.

We took advantage of the lovely warm weather and enjoyed a Pimms evening in the garden of the Rose and Crown. We were provided with a lovely supply of fresh fruit to enjoy with our Pimms. The blackberries were especially big and juicy.

A good number of our members joined other members of the County for a trip to Lincoln. We were dropped off at the Cathedral where we were welcomed with a refreshing drink and a locally made shortbread biscuit. It was inspiring to hear nearly 900 ladies singing Jerusalem. We were happy to endorse the thanks given to the various people who had arranged the day especially the people at Johnson’s Coaches who had provided all the coaches and made the arrange-ments at Lincoln. The weather was perfect and there was time to take advantage of the free guided tours of the Cathedral, explore the castle, enjoy a meal and of course the shops.

Unfortunately, the speaker scheduled for our meeting on 13 September had to

cancel but we are very lucky as Paul Rogers has agreed to give us a talk about

taking a good photograph. We are hoping it will inspire members to get snap-

ping for the Photo Competition on 13 October 2018. (Entries accepted at the

Baptist Chapel between 4.00 p.m. and 7 p.m. on 11 October 2018.) Look out

for posters around the village, the village websiste and village facebook for

further details. Why not come along as a visitor it might inspire you to enter the

competition. Wolston W.I. always welcomes visitors.

Friends of Ryton Organic Gardens (FROG) Ryton Gardens are unique, and probably the oldest certified organic gardens in the world. They were offered for sale by private tender by their owner, Garden Organic, in January. A campaign to save the gardens did not make any pro-gress, and there is no information at the time of writing as to what is likely to happen to them. The Friends of Ryton Organic Gardens (FROG) is a group of concerned people, mostly local, who are keen to preserve and support the gardens for public ac-cess and education whoever ends up running them. They are in close commu-nication with Five Acre Farm which it is hoped will also continue. They are also in touch with Garden Organic. The farmland, gardens and agricultural buildings have been declared an Asset of Community Value, although this could be subject to a challenge from Garden Organic. What the designation proves, however, is that Rugby Borough Council has been prepared to value the site for its public and community benefit. FROG meets regularly at the Rose and Crown in Wolston. If you are interested in getting involved, or just keeping in touch please email [email protected] or visit the FROG Facebook page.

five acre community farm A community supported agriculture scheme

Your local community owned farm is continuing to face a challenging year! Regarding the growing season then it’s been a bit of a mixed bag. It was a cold slow start to the year when we thought ti would never be warm and then followed by what seems like a never ending heatwave of a summer when we wondered if it would ever be cool! There has been so little rain that the regular checking of the rain gauge is to remove the spiders and not measure the rain. We have decent sprinklers to water everything but it’s costing us a fair bit more money to keep all of the crops growing than in a normal summer. To help with this we have asked members if they would be able to give us a donation towards the water costs this year. Most of the crops are doing well, the potatoes are going to be a little smaller than usual and the courgettes and squash suffered early on with aphid damage but are recovering thanks to the ladybirds. Our overwintered onions and garlic however loved the weather and are probably the biggest we have ever grown. We are having a BBQ lunch on Saturday 25th August. Come and work in the morning (if you want to) or just come to socialise at the bring and share lunch. This is a good opportunity to visit and see the site and see what vegetables you can look forward to. We are planning to hold an annual members meeting just as soon as we

The village website has now moved to a completely new platform, although the address remains the same as before. The new software is much easier to update and is far more flexible than the previous version, enabling much more scope for village organisations to promote their activities as the pages are much easier to set up and also unlimited in number. A reminder that the costs of the server and technical support for the Wolston Village website are funded by Wolston Parish Council, although all the content is a local volunteer effort. If you want to comment, good or bad, or suggest how things here may be improved, please send an email to the address below. Future plans include a fully searchable list of local businesses and traders and an online calendar of community events.
