New General Manager for UK and Ireland
The economy in the UK is facing difficult
times and as businesses and consumers look
for savings, every company in the process
industry will be exploring ways to increase
efficiency, maximise throughput and control
costs. Emerson can help your company
achieve its business objectives by upgrading
to the latest digital based plant architectures
and software solutions.
As a leading global supplier, Emerson
provides products, services, and solutions
that measure, analyse, control, automate,

Our team offers unmatched capabilities to
improve process and asset performance for
customers in the power, chemical, oil and
gas, pulp and paper, pharmaceutical, food
and beverage, water and wastewater, and
other process-related industries.
Irrespective of the industry you operate
in, energy costs are probably a significant
factor in your company’s operations and in
this volatile market the power generation
industry has to optimise plant performance
to remain competitive.
Emerson has provided the power industry
with revolutionary control solutions for
more than 40 years. We can help you control
critical power generation processes, increase
plant efficiency and megawatt production,
realise long-term O&M savings, and
dramatically decrease the C&I construction
costs of new power plants.
Our systems control thousands of
megawatts of electricity from all types of
power generation facilities and virtually
every manufacturer of heavy equipment.
Emerson delivers the widest array of
advanced instrumentation, control,
and automation technologies available
from any supplier. Powered by Ovation,
our PlantWeb® network of predictive
intelligence lets you detect problems
before they affect your process. PlantWeb

related, Emerson will have a solution that
will make your organisation more profitable.
It is with great pleasure that I introduce
myself as the General Manager for the UK
and Ireland, taking over from Mark Dutton
who I would like to thank for his leadership
and direction during the past three years.
I would also like to congratulate Mark on his
appointment as Vice President & General
Manager, Daniel Measurement & Control
Europe.
I have joined Emerson at a challenging time.
However, I cannot recall a single year in my
thirty plus years in the C&I industry where there
wasn’t a challenge to overcome. Starting in
the UK offshore business back in the 70’s, each
year brought new and exciting opportunities.
Some were tougher than others, but I cannot
ever recall a single “easy” year!
In the 90’s, as I moved into general
management, I experienced my first real
recession. Customer investment strategies
were prolonged to cope with the downturn in
customer demand, and a credit squeeze was
put in place by the banks. Does all this sound
familiar?
The current world economic problems are a
step change away from the early 90’s but I’m
sure the current climate is causing you, our
customers, many issues. My experience is that
by taking care of our customers and providing
great service - whilst
understanding our
customers needs by
being close to them,
will always see us
through.

Emerson’s Smart Wireless technology
is helping E.ON UK to accurately monitor
and measure treated water usage at its
Kingsnorth dual-fired power station.
Using Emerson’s Rosemount® wireless
transmitters, E.ON is now able to collect flow
measurement data from new flowmeters
installed throughout the turbine hall. The
self-organising wireless network delivers the
data for trending in an OSIsoft PI historian
which helps personnel monitor water usage
within the system.
“E.ON is keen to adopt the very latest
technology to help improve productivity,
efficiency and availability, and wireless
technology provides the ideal networking
solution to access the flow measurement
data from the turbine building without
having to install new cabling.“ said Chet
Mistry, Team Leader, E.ON UK.
The turbine hall at Kingsnorth is around
500m long and presents a difficult working
environment for wireless as it houses large
turbines, vast amounts of metal piping and a
number of metal walkways that could interfere
with the wireless signal. Such an environment
would not be suitable for a line of sight wireless
solution, but Emerson’s Smart Wireless
self-organising technology encountered no
problems in terms of routing data back to the
gateway or reliability of connection.
With Emerson’s self-organising technology,
each wireless device can act as a router for
other nearby devices, passing messages
along until they reach their destination.
If there is an obstruction, transmissions are
simply re-routed along the network until a
clear path to the Smart Wireless Gateway
is found. All of this happens automatically,
without any involvement by the user.
Fourteen Rosemount wireless transmitters
are transmitting flow measurement data
every fifteen seconds to an Emerson Smart
Wireless Gateway, situated in the main
administration building on the other side of
the road from the turbine hall. The fourteen
transmitters took around two hours to
configure and then less than six hours to fully
install within the plant. In contrast a wired
solution would have taken between one and
two weeks to complete.
“We were initially a little sceptical of
the claims made for wireless especially
considering the environment we would be
placing it in. But installation was quick and
easy and we just switched them on and they
all worked,” said Simon Lark, C&I engineer,
E.ON UK.

Smart Wireless Technology Enables E.ON to Monitor Treated Water Usage
Emerson’s Smart Wireless technology is helping E.ON UK to accurately monitor and measure treated water usage at its Kingsnorth dual-fired power station on the Medway Estuary in Kent.
The high cost of wiring associated with a conventional cabled solution and a desire to embrace the very latest networking technology, led E.ON to evaluate wireless technologies that could meet their needs.

The EU ETS is a key part of the UK
Government’s long-term policy to reduce
carbon emissions. The purpose of the
scheme is to encourage investment in
energy efficiency and cleaner technology at
the lowest cost. The scheme covers energy
intensive industries, and is based on
a “cap and trade” basis. The UK
Government sets emissions limits
for individual installations, which
are then allocated allowances
equal to that cap for the
particular period.
Emerson has the products,
technologies and
application experience to
help companies, such as
power generators, cement
works, glass works,
refineries, iron and steel
and other energy intensive
industries, minimise their
emissions in the most cost
effective way.
