Last month we said we would have more news on housing and the news broke on 06 May that there’s the possibility of creating a garden town between Lympne and Sellindge which will provide much needed new homes and jobs as well as relieve the pressure for development across the rest of the district. There’s information and maps available on www.shepway.gov.uk/otterpool-park and if you still have unanswered questions or want to comment then email [email protected] council has identified a broad area around Otterpool Manor Farm and developed a set of draft principles that, if approved by Cabinet in June, will form a part of an expression of interest to the government this summer. Earlier this year, the government invited local authorities to identify areas for new garden settlements. The timing has worked well for us as Shepway District Council acquired 357 acres of land in December and if the scheme goes ahead we will be in the best possible position to ensure that the homes are well designed, affordable for local people and that facilities such as a new sewage plant, broadband, schools, health and roads are in place from the start. One of the aspects of this proposal that make it special is that at least 30% of the land will be public parks and accessible green space. The area shown on the map on the website takes in several landholdings that are not in the Council’s ownership such as Folkestone racecourse. At this early stage there have been no decisions taken about acquiring the other land or working in partnership. If the project goes ahead it would be built in stages and it would probably take 20 to 30 years in total to build up to 12,000 homes. There will be opportunities for public engagement at every stage and we will keep you updated. In the meantime the farmland owned by Shepway District Council is being let as farm business tenancies to provide an income to the council. We are both very supportive of the garden town concept as not only do the houses and offices get built but so too does the infrastructure that makes them work. We also believe we can create something special along the lines of other garden settlements such as Letchworth and Welwyn Garden City.We both attended the last Lyminge parish council meeting on 25 April and Susan turned out to watch the first game of this year’s Petanque Community Shield at Etchinghill on 14 May.
A brief extra word from Susan wearing her Kent County Councillor hat. Several people had raised concerns about the Department of Health’s proposals to reduce funding for pharmacies and the effect this would have on the Lyminge pharmacy. I raised the issue at Kent County Council which had not been consulted despite our role in Public Health, Social Care and the Kent Health and Wellbeing Board. KCC believes that over a quarter of Kent’s 280 pharmacies could be adversely affected by the proposals and that whilst there’s clearly a need to deal with over-provision in towns there is a big role for pharmacies to play in relieving pressure on both GPs and A&E and a special need for support in rural areas. The KCC Cabinet Member for Public Health and Adult Social Care has written to the Government on behalf of the County Council to express concerns about the proposal and call for the Department of Health to reconsider its plans. Our speaker in April was Don Wilks who showed us beautiful colour slides of his visit to South Africa where he travelled the Garden route to Cape Town and saw many animals, birds and flowers. The competition - a spring flower arrange-ment - was won by Pat Barnes.
On June 15th we meet at the new time of 2pm at Rhodes Minnis Village Hall when we are holding a tea party for the Queen’s 90th birthday. For further details please contact Diana Bennett on 862134

In May, the talk on Kent’s Living Seas was very good - really informative with some fantastic photos. We planned an additional trip in June and were looking forward to our visit to the Dover Transport Museum and the Café at Langdon Heights.
On 1st June our talk is on the Origins of Choral Singing by Chris Jeffrey, and immediately afterwards we will go for Lunch in Etchinghill Golf Club; on 15th we are going to Pashley Manor Gardens near Ticehurst. On 6th July our speaker is Nicholas Reed on Murder at the Priory and our Annual Garden Party will be on 13th at Fran & Rod’s.
Meeting are 10.30 - 12.30 in the Rigden Room of the Tayne Centre. Entry is currently £2.00 and includes refreshments. We are a friendly social group and welcome new members so just drop into one of our meetings, or, if you’d like to talk to one of us first, please call 863500.

Free admission for all ages and everyone is welcome. Please bring your own picnic and bubbly - tea and coffee supplied. The film is set in 1950’s rural Ireland, where opportunities are scarce, particularly for young women. When given the opportunity to emigrate to New York, Ellis Lacey knows she must go, leaving behind her family and home for the first time. The entrance fee of £5.00 includes admission, refreshments and a lucky draw ticket. Film shows take place the third Monday of every month (with the exception of December). For further information, please visit www.etchinghill.info or ring 01303 863164.
ETCHINGHILL VILLAGE HALLETCHINGHILL VILLAGE MARKET held on Saturday 6th June, starting 10.00 am. Many stalls selling local produce. Refreshments are available. The winner of the raffle prize in May was Graham Barber, who very generously donated the cake to Open House (it was delicious!!)
OPEN HOUSE held every Monday (except Bank Holidays) from 10.00 – 12.00. Come and join us for a chat, activities and refreshments. All are welcome. The speaker this month, on the 20th June is our own Robert Godfrey who will give an informative and humorous presentation on the Nuclear Power Industry.SPEED WATCHEtchinghill is served by a loyal band of volunteers, who often help out the Lyminge and Rhodes Minnis teams. The work of the Speed Watch teams is valuable in endeavouring to remind vehicle drivers that they are driving on a section of the road which has a 30 mph speed limit. Canterbury Road is recognised by Kent Police as a road where too many drivers exceed the speed limit. The aim of the team is to remind and educate irresponsible drivers. We need more volunteers – how about you? For more information contact Colin Manvell [email protected]

Members were welcomed to the resolution meeting by Gill LeCras, vice president and she presented birthday posies to Gladys Harris and Rita Warner. A group of members had enjoyed lunch recently at the Bell Inn, Hythe.Rosemary Piddock read details of two proposals - “appropriate care in hospital for people with dementia” and “avoid food waste and address food poverty”. These resolutions were discussed and voted for unanimously. Our speaker, Kath Westbrook from Age UK spoke about dementia with its different forms of the disease and its effect it has on the person and the carer. She covered a lot of aspects of this condition and we all learned a lot from this very informative talk. The competition winner was Rosemary Piddock. Tea hostesses were Pat Kent, Chris Marshall, June Price and Rosemary Piddock. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 21 at 2.30pm in the village hall when Ian Porter will speak about the Titanic and what happened after the ship sank. OUTDOOR THEATRE THIS SUMMER
Those of you who are fans of The Rude Mechanical Theatre Co will be pleased to hear that they will be returning to Lyminge this summer. It will be a brand new play called ‘Macbyrd’, and is a comedy thriller - and sixteen of the characters are birds! Don’t miss Inspector Seed, a pigeon, as the detective!
It is set in 1940 and is about the changes to a small village in rural Sussex brought about by the threat of invasion and its impact on relationships. Pete Talbot, the writer and director, says, “There are, it has to be admitted, a few echoes of a certain Shakespeare play. Macbyrd is told by the ‘gypsy magpies’ that his time has come, that ‘sleek birds, black against the sky’ will rule. In fact change to the village is because a momentous event is going to happen – and I’m not going to tell you what!” The comedy is partly in the absurdity of the birds’ world, but also in the ways of ‘country folk’. So there’s a bit of Foyle’s War about it and a bit of ‘The Archers’ – plus quite a bit of The Rudes, too.
Sunday 31st July - Tayne Field - 7.30pm. Tickets will be available from Laing Bennett, or Mike Chisnall (01303-862723). Adults £15, Seniors £14, Students £12, Children £8, Families £38. New Clinical Chair chosen for NHS South Kent Coast CCG
Dr Jonathan Bryant is the new Clinical Chair of NHS South Kent Coast Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), replacing Dr Darren Cocker, who previously held the role for more than three years.Since 2010, Dr Bryant has worked as a GP at New Lyminge Surgery. In 2014 he joined the CCG’s governing body and has taken a particular interest in primary care and strategy.Qualifying in medicine from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine in 2005, Dr Bryant subsequently went on to work at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford. His postgraduate training was completed when he spent time working in each of the three acute hospitals in east Kent, and also working as a Canterbury GP.Dr Bryant said: “It’s a great honour to chosen by colleagues to be Clinical Chair, and to continue the great work that the CCG has been involved in – particularly with combining health and social care and giving more support to GPs in primary care. We want to continue to see fewer people staying in hospital, but receiving more care closer to home. And the NHS has to respond to the needs of patients and the challenges that we face today.”Dr Bryant added: “Working as a GP in the area, I know how passionately our patients feel about the NHS and what they want for the area. I also work with colleagues who are equally passionate about the health of the local population, and the services that we deliver.“I’m very proud to be in a position to follow on from the excellent work of my predecessor, Dr Darren Cocker in helping to commission the best healthcare we can for the people of the area.”

Letter to the EditorThank you......... to Matthew - Manager of the BIG LITTLE Bathroom Shop in Etchinghill
After having had a problem with my shower for many months, had it written off by other outfits, I finally got so fed up with it I went along to the Bathroom Shop, which I had seen in Etchinghill. Within a week, Matthew had sourced and fitted the two parts and it was back up and running perfectly. I consider this to be EXCELLENT service, and would heartily recommend Matthew and the BiG Little Bathroom Shop to anyone who needs help either with simple repairs or with much bigger refits. Don’t give up hope!! Consult Matthew!

A good crowd came and enjoyed themselves, on Saturday 7th May at Etchinghill Village Hall, pitting their wits against the questions posed by the Youth
Group members of the Etchinghill Residents’ Association.

Last month’s picture was the electricity transformer on the east side of the road at Yew Tree Cross. The clue in the background was the corner of the village sign !Now, where have you seen this notice ? !

After all the questions were done the final winners were “The Orphans” with a total score of 90 points.
Well done to everyone especially the young people who managed the evening.
