The Collect of the Day

The Presider says to the people

The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

PresiderLet us pray.

O God, who before the passion of your only-begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A reading from the second Book of King Reina Smith

When the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here; for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel. The company of prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you?” And he said, “Yes, I know; keep silent.”

Elijah said to him, “Elisha, stay here; for the Lord has sent me to Jericho.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho. The company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you?” And he answered, “Yes, I know; be silent.”

Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here; for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan.

Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground.

When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you.” Elisha said, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.” He responded, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not.” As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha kept watching and crying out, “Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. (2:1-12)

Please join us at home as we say the Psalm in unison

Psalm 50:1-6 Deus deorum Reina Smith

The Lord, the God of gods, has spoken; *he has called the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.

Out of Zion, perfect in its beauty, *God reveals himself in glory.

Our God will come and will not keep silence; *before him there is a consuming flame,and round about him a raging storm.

He calls the heavens and the earth from above *to witness the judgment of his people.

"Gather before me my loyal followers, *those who have made a covenant with meand sealed it with sacrifice."

Let the heavens declare the rightness of his cause; *for God himself is judge.

A reading from Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians Deidre Comey

Even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (4:3-6)

Sequence Hymn, “Muchos Resplandores” (Many are the Light Beams) Jon Stout & Ellen Lentz

Muchos resplandores, solo una luz;

es la luz de Cristo.

Muchos resplandores, solo una luz

que nos hace uno.

Many are the light beams from the one light.

Our one light is Jesus.

Many are the light beams from the one light;

we are one in Christ.

Muchos son los miembros, un cuerpo hay,

ese cuerpo es Cristo.

Muchos son los miembros, un cuerpo hay

y en El somos uno.

Many are the branches, of the one tree;

Our one tree is Jesus.

Many are the branches, of the one tree;

we are one in Christ.

Many are the members, the body is one;

members all of Jesus.

Many are the members, the body is one;

we are one in Christ.

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation,

he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son s/he is worshiped and glorified.

S/He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen

The Prayers of the People Deidre Comey

LeaderGod of Peace: We pray for our country in this time of transition as our new President and Vice President become the leaders of this nation. We ask for an orderly transition of power and wise decisions in the days ahead. Bring healing to our nation Lord, help us listen to one another with respect, always seeking the good in the other. Reconcile families and friends divided. Help us learn to love each other despite our differences and focus on the work before us: the work of truth-telling, forgiveness, reconciliation, and peace. Inspire the people of this nation to speak out against racism, and resist all forms of injustice and oppression, as we strive to form a more perfect union in 2021.

Leader God of Peace:

People Hear our prayers for reconciliation.

Leader God of Freedom: We pray for all who have been recently sworn into office to serve in our national and local government. We pray especially for Joe our President that you would give him wisdom and courage as he takes on the challenge of his first 100 days in office. May he, and all those chosen to carry the burden of office, be given the discernment to know what is right, the compassion to seek the common good, and a spirit of service to this nation.

Leader God of Freedom:

People Hear our prayers for this nation.

Leader God of Grace: We pray for our Presiding Bishop, Michael, our Bishop, Carlye, and all other bishops and ministers. Nurture and refresh them with the water of life, that they may have the strength to carry the weight of office in this difficult and demanding time.

LeaderGod of Grace:

People Hear our prayers for your servants.

Leader God of Compassion: We pray that you keep the merciful face of Christ ever before us as we strive to be more fully your healers of this broken world. We pray for the first-responders, medical personnel, and essential workers on the frontlines of this pandemic. We give thanks for the many scientists around the world who have worked diligently and selflessly to find a vaccine, and we pray that soon everyone throughout the earth will be vaccinated and safe from COVID-19. We pray for those who are lonely, isolated, sick or suffering physically or financially. We pray for the poor, the refugees, the immigrants, and all who are without homes, or food, or meaningful work. We pray especially for those unfairly incarcerated who received no justice or mercy from our court system because of the color of their skin.

Leader God of Compassion:

People Hear our prayers for those who are exhausted, despondent, or suffering in

any way.

LeaderGod of Creation: We pray for the Earth, entrusted to our care: For animals, atmosphere, aquifers, rainforests, oceans, and all parts of your creation struggling with global warming that have no voice of their own.

Throughout the world stir up a spirit that seeks to protect the Earth and all its resources, that we may leave to our children’s children’s children the beauty and abundance you have given us.

LeaderGod of Creation:

People Hear our prayers for the Earth.

Leader God of Mercy: We pray for those who have died, especially those who have died alone from Covid-19. For the faithful in past generations and for the prophets who called us to racial reconciliation, sometimes at the cost of their own lives. We pray that you would continue to bring prophets into our midst who can tell the truth so there could be real healing and justice for the black people of this nation who have been unfairly incarcerated, mistreated and oppressed for centuries. Help us remember the saints of the past that they might inspire us to proclaim your Good News to all people, by our words and actions, and bring us at last into the glorious company of the saints in light.

Today we pray especially for Bernie Ripoll, who died on Wednesday. He was a faithful 8 o’clocker of this parish and husband of Susan Ripoll. May his soul and the souls of all the departed rest in peace.

Leader God of Mercy:

People Hear our prayers for the faithful departed in all generations.

Leader We pray also for the special needs and concerns of this congregation. People may add their own petitions silently or aloud from home. Please remember to unmute yourself, and then mute yourself again when finished.

The Presider adds a concluding Collect

Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of this nation and our newly elected officials as we begin this new year; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Confession & Absolution Church of England BCP

Presider

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

All

Almighty God, source of all that is,

and giver of every good gift.

You create all people in your image

and call us to love one another as you love us.

We confess that we have failed to honor you

in the great diversity of the human family.

We have desired to live in freedom,

while building walls between ourselves and others.

We have longed to be known and accepted for who we are,

while judging others based on the color of their skin,

or cultural differences.

Forgive us, Holy God.

Give us eyes to see you as you are revealed in all people.

Strengthen us for the work of reconciliation rooted in love.

Restore us in your image, to be the Beloved Community,

united in our diversity;

even as you are one with Christ and the Spirit,

Holy and undivided Trinity, now and for ever. Amen.

The Presider says

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Presider then says

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,     hallowed be thy Name,     thy kingdom come,     thy will be done,         on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread.And forgive us our trespasses,     as we forgive those         who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation,     but deliver us from evil.For thine is the kingdom,     and the power, and the glory,     for ever and ever. Amen.

The Blessing

Please join in singing from home one last rousing “Alleluia!” before Lent begins

Closing Hymn, “Alleluia! sing to Jesus!” Iris Prcic

Alleluia! sing to Jesus!

his the scepter, his the throne.

Alleluia! his the triumph,

his the victory alone.

Hark! the songs of peaceful Zion

thunder like a mighty flood.

Jesus out of every nation

hath redeemed us by his blood.

Alleluia! not as orphans

are we left in sorrow now;

Alleluia! He is near us,

faith believes, nor questions how;

Though the cloud from sight received him

when the forty days were o'er

shall our hearts forget his promise,

'I am with you evermore'?

Alleluia! Bread of Heaven,

thou on earth our food, our stay!

Alleluia! here the sinful

flee to thee from day to day.

Intercessor, friend of sinners,

earth's Redeemer, plead for me.

Where the songs of all the sinless

sweep across the crystal sea.

Alleluia! sing to Jesus!

his the scepter, his the throne.

Alleluia! his the triumph,

his the victory alone.

Hark! the songs of peaceful Zion

thunder like a mighty flood.

Jesus out of every nation

hath redeemed us by his blood.

The flowers today are given to the Glory of God

by Susan Ripoll in memory of her husband

‘At peace, resting in God’s light,

and surrounded by everlasting love.’

This Wednesday, February 17th, is Ash Wednesday. Like everything else in this year of pandemic,

the service cannot be what we are used to, but it can still be meaningful—perhaps even moreso

given the difficult time we are in. The Ash Wednesday liturgy is solemn and beautiful in and of

itself, and though we cannot have the Imposition of Ashes, I am planning a different ritual

everyone can participate in from home. For that purpose please have a candle and matches in

front of you when you join us in the online Zoom service at 7:00 p.m. Ash Wednesday marks the

beginning of Lent, and as such is an important moment in our Christian journey. I hope you will

join us on our regular Zoom channel:
