Featured Artist: Elaine DAVIS

Elaine Davis was born in Irvine in Scotland. She completed an ONC in Art and Design at

Cardonald College, Glasgow, in 1992.

Elaine lives in a small village in the heart of

Ayrshire on the West Coast of Scotland.

She works mainly with oils and acrylic oncanvas and draws inspiration for her

paintings from the Scottish countryside.

There is a wonderful sense of light and

colour in Elaine’s work and her paintings

evoke memories of long summer walksalong wooded pathways. She takes the

viewer through shaded areas of woodland

and into illuminated open spaces which canbe common and familiar to the surroundings

in which we live in.

Elaine says: ”The vast array of textures andthe endless variety of colours to be found in

the natural world are the things that

fascinate me. Whether it be woodland, rockpool or ripples in a river – or the way the

changing light of the different seasons can

completely transform a scene from a gamut

of gold and yellows to a profusion of violetand blues”.

Mark Hickman was born in Wordsley, West

Midlands in 1979. He gained a BA Honours in

Fine Art at Leeds Metropolitan University in2001 and completed a Postgraduate Diploma

in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, London in

2005.

Artist Statement: ”After spending a decade

producing concept based paintings, I decidedupon a radical change and in 2011, embarked

upon producing a series of paintings exploring

a different set of values.

After studying and living in London the beauty

of the city became obvious and although I nowlive in the West Midlands, I frequently return

to visit, sketch and photograph the city through

its landmarks. I have gradually become

interested in atmosphere, natural and artificiallight. Most recently I have become concerned

with attempting to capture a sense of

temperature”.

Carrick SIDDELL

Carrick Siddell was born in Sutton Coldfield,

West Midlands and travelled extensively as a

child – spending many years growing upbetween America and Spain. He studied Fine

Art at the University of Wolverhampton

graduating with a BA Honours Degree in 2002,

followed by a PGCE in Art and Design fromManchester Metropolitan University in 2005.

Carrick’s passion is painting. He has recently

produced a series of city scapes influenced by

his travels in the UK and Europe. His

preferred medium is predominantly oil, but healso uses acrylic and digital media.

Artist Statement: “The themes in my paintings

have changed with time, but the one thing that

interests me the most is light. Shadows

become almost as solid as the objects theyare cast onto. I like to look out for the

overlooked aspects in a city scape and I find

that painting from intuition and instinct is morerewarding than relying on technical

knowledge.

Cornish jeweller Lawrence Gibson undertook a

one year Art and Design Foundation Course at

Falmouth School of Art and gained a NationalDiploma in 1991. He subsequently pursued a

three-year degree course in Industrial Design

and gained a First Class Degree with Honoursfrom Cardiff Institute of Higher Education in

1994.

Upon returning to Cornwall Lawrence took up

a position at a local model-making business

where he learnt new techniques andprocesses. During his four-year employment,

and needing an outlet for his creativity,

Lawrence realised that he could utilise hisknowledge and skills to produce forms based

on an ongoing collection of sketches. These

forms were inspired by the Cornish coastline

with its beautiful coves, beaches and fishingharbours were stepping stones to the creation

of Lawrence’s unique range of “ocean

jewellery”.

Each piece of jewellery is handmade using a

base metal of high quality pewter, which iscompletely lead and nickel-free. The pewter is

sourced in Cornwall and most of Lawrence's

jewellery designs incorporate coloured resindetail. Several pieces also feature beads,

which are carefully selected and ethically

sourced from fair trade suppliers.

Lesley Alexandra FREWLesley Alexandra Frew is a designer-maker

based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Shegraduated from the University of Ulster in 2007

with a BA (hons) in Fine and Applied Art,

having specialised in Textiles.

Lesley creates contemporary jewellery using

discarded plastic bags. Her interest lies inethical and sustainable making and by

selecting raw materials that would normally be

destined for landfill, she transforms and givesthe materials a second life.

Lesley says, “I enjoy confronting people’sexpectations by taking a discarded material,

giving it a new value and revealing it’s capacity

for beauty. The plastic goes through anumber of processes that include layering,

heat bonding, cutting, folding and hand

stitching. The bags are transformed into a

versatile material that is colourful, soft, lightweight and durable and the jewellery

created is innovative and contemporary”.
