Honors Drama Audition Information Sheet
1. Sign up for an audition time in the drama room (D108). Read all information below:
2. Select and memorize two monologues from the list in this packet. You will be rated on
Vocal Expression (volume, pitch, and characterization), Physical Expression (movements,
gestures, facial expressions) and concentration.
3. Fill out your audition form and bring it with you to your audition. Check in desk will be
outside the drama room (D108). Please arrive 5 minutes early.
4. Wear clothes that you can easily move in; NO short skirts. Do not wear flip-flops.
5. Try to relax and have fun! Be sure to be a good (respectful) audience member while
others in your group audition. Behavior during auditions will impact casting decisions!
6. The honors drama 2019-2020 class list will be posted on the HPMS drama website (Mrs.
McKenna’s teacher site) as soon as we have the lists completed. The website is:

Honors Drama will have a couple of performances throughout the school year. Most rehearsals
will be done in class, however some will be held after school. Those will be scheduled in
advance and you will be expected to attend. The week of the performance there will be
mandatory rehearsals. All mandatory rehearsals and performances will be a grade.

Musical Theater Audition Information Sheet

Code of Conduct for The Little Mermaid JR
Please read through the following information and sign where indicated. THERE ARE NO SMALL PARTS. Everyone is essential to this production. We do not have “stars”. No single student is more important than any other student. We want to create an ensemble as well as a memorable, positive experience for all. We expect parents to model this behavior and encourage their child to create a positive atmosphere. RESPECT OTHERS. It is expected that all students be respectful, polite, humble and truthful to their fellow cast mates, directors, crew and parent volunteers. Negative attitudes, gossip, bullying, defiance, foul language, eye rolling, or other forms of disrespect will not be tolerated. This includes and form of social media (ie Instagram, snapchat, group texts etc.) This is grounds for dismissal from the production. RESPECT FOR OUR SPACE AND MATERIALS. Our rehearsal spaces, dressing rooms, and theatre need to be respected. Please do not leave garbage or your belongings. We are very fortunate to have wonderful costumes and props. Treat them with respect. Costumes are to be hung up or placed in your bin. Do NOT touch anyone else’s props!! **If Cast you may be asked to purchase dance shoes, leotard, and proper undergarments for costume** FOLLOWING DIRECTION. Full participation and attention is required from every actor and crewmember. WE have a limited number of rehearsal time. Lines, songs, and dances must be memorized in a timely manner. Being on time and ready for rehearsal/performance is a must. There are no CELL PHONES allowed in rehearsals or performances. NO FOOD OR GUM is allowed in the theatre or the dressing rooms. All snacks need to be eaten prior to rehearsal. Water bottles are allowed and highly encouraged! REHEARSAL SCHEDULES will be given our and posted on the drama website. Be sure to check them! Missing a MANDATORY practice will result in dismissal from cast or crew. It is your responsibility to tell Mrs. McKenna ahead of time if you will be missing a regular rehearsal. If you miss a rehearsal, remember that you are likely to not be included in the scene or musical number that was blocked. PASSING GRADES are required for participation in cast and crew. Use your off-stage time for homework! MANDATORY REHEARSALS FOR THE LITTLE MERMAID JR are: April 27, 29, 30, and May 1. Production dates are May 2, 3, 4, and 5. Character Descriptions for The Little Mermaid Jr Ariel
Ariel, the heroine of our story, is a little mermaid who longs to be human. She is a strong singer and dynamic performer. Ariel has some beautiful solos but must be able to convey meaning through gesture once she loses her voice. Gender: Female Vocal range top: Eb5 Vocal range bottom: Bb3
Prince Eric
Prince Eric is the adventurous prince who captures Ariel's heart. Look for a charming performer with a sensitive nature. Prince Eric has a few small solos, but a strong actor in needed for this role. Gender: Male Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: B3
Sebastian
Sebastian is the meticulous and anxious crab who tries to keep Ariel safe while getting to lead some of the most memorable songs in the show! Looking for a strong singer who can also handle Sebastian's emotional range. Sebastian can be played by a boy or girl. Gender: Any Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: A3
Flounder
Flounder is Ariel's sincere and sensitive best friend who is loyal to the end. This spunky fish also has a show-stopping solo in "She's in Love." Flounder can be cast with a girl or a boy. Gender: Any Vocal range top: Db5 Vocal range bottom: G3
King Triton
KING TRITON rules the sea and is a force to be reckoned with. This non-singer needs to command the stage as a strong leader but also show the tenderness of a parent. Gender: Male
Mersisters
The Mersisters (Aquata, Andrina, Arista, Atina, Adella, Allana) are Ariel's siblings and full of personality and sass. These are great roles to for talented singers and dancers who can create and play six distinctive characters. Gender: Female Vocal range top: G5 Vocal range bottom: G3

Ursula
Ursula is the manipulative sea witch who tries to overthrow King Triton. She is cunning and devious and will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Looking for a performer who can bring out this villain's humor while finding texture in Ursula's complexity. Ursula's songs can be challenging, so this actor needs to be very comfortable with solos! Gender: Female Vocal range top: C#5 Vocal range bottom: F3
Ursula’s Dark Sea Creature Chorus
The dark sea creatures are extensions of Ursula, perhaps the poor unfortunate souls who are now trapped in her lair. Looking for a small group who work well together and can move as a unit. Gender: Any Vocal range top: C#5 Vocal range bottom: C4
Flotsam/Jetsam
Flotsam and Jetsam are Ursula's slippery spies. These electric eels are sinister and sneaky, so these actors need to be underhanded and devious while still being heard on stage. Flotsam and Jetsam can be played by boys or girls.
Gender: Any Vocal range top: C#5 Vocal range bottom: C4
Scuttle
Scuttle is the know-it-all seagull who serves as Ariel's expert on humans. He is funny and off-beat. While a good singer will rock "Human Stuff," this song can easily be spoken in rhythm. Looking for an actor with good comedic timing who is willing to have fun with Scuttle's eccentricities. Gender: Any Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: B3
Gulls
The Gulls are Scuttle's flock of zany "back-up singers" who help explain human stuff to Ariel. These gulls will have a great feature role in the show! Gender: Any Vocal range top: G5 Vocal range bottom: B3
Grimsby
Grimsby is Prince Eric's prim and proper valet. He is rigid in personality and constantly trying to guide Prince Eric towards the throne. While Grimsby does have some singing to do, strong acting trumps singing ability for this role. Gender: Male Vocal range top: C5 Vocal range bottom: E4
Chef Louis
Chef Louis is the over-the-top head chef in the palace. He is always wild and frenetic. This is an excellent featured role for a comedic performer. Gender: Any Vocal range top: C5 Vocal range bottom: A3

Chefs
The Chefs are Chef Louis's assistants. Gender: Any
Carlotta
Carlotta is the headmistress in Prince Eric's palace and Ariel's greatest human ally. This non-singing role needs to be warm and maternal to make Ariel feel welcome. Gender: Female
Princesses
The six Princesses try everything they can to win the heart of Prince Eric. Since none of them possesses the voice Prince Eric is searching for, actresses who can create an exaggerated and comedic personality through song are a must! Gender: Female Vocal range top: G5 Vocal range bottom: E4
Pilot
The Pilot is the head sailor on Prince Eric's ship. This nautical expert entertains the sailors with wild tales of the sea. The Pilot has a few speaking lines, but his singing voice is most important. Gender: Any Vocal range top: C5 Vocal range bottom: Bb3
Sailors
The Sailors are the crew of Prince Eric's ship. They are eager for adventure and ready to tackle a storm. The Sailors can be played by boys or girls. Gender: Any
Seahorse
The Seahorse is the court herald for King Triton. This non-singing part is a good role for a young performer with a clear speaking voice. Gender: Any
Sea Creatures
The Sea Creatures are the ensemble under water animals in King Triton's court. They can include as few or as many performers as your production permits. There are several moments to showcase both dancers and singers in "Under the Sea." Gender: Any
Lagoon Animals
The Lagoon Animals try to convince Prince Eric to kiss Ariel. This ensemble can double as the Sea Creatures. Gender: Any

Monologues for Auditions; Please choose one monologue to memorize. You
may choose two if you want to be considered for two different kinds of roles
(i.e. Ursula VS Sebastian or Ariel VS Scuttle). If you are auditioning for Honors
Drama or Musical Theater you must choose two monologues for two characters.
King Triton **Need to show his change from first lines to the next ones** (Addressing merfolk) Benevolent merfolk.. welcome! It’s wonderful to see all of you here. (beat, more serious) Ever since the Sea Witch robbed us of your dear queen, celebrations like these have lifted my spirits. Thank you. (Scolding Ariel for going up to the surface) You could’ve been seen by one of those barbarians! They’re dangerous- nets, harpoons! You’re my youngest—As long as you live under my reef, you’ll obey my rules!
Scuttle
(Ariel shows him something she found, he thinks he is an expert on human
things, but often mispronounces words **These are not typos!)
More human stuff, eh? Lemme see… (he takes the prop) Wow! This is special.
This is very, very unusual. It’s a dinglehopper! Oh, these babies are fantabulous…
absolutely indispensary. When it comes to dinglehoppers, I’m a regular
encyclopoodia!
Jetsam/Flotsam
(Trying to get Ariel to go to Ursula)
Poor, sssweet, misssunderstood child. She has a very ssserious problem, hasn’t
she? Who will ease her woes and worries? Who will help her get her man?
Perhaps the Sea Witch can! She’s been dying to help you!
Flounder
(Finds Ariel up at the surface of the ocean)
Hey, Ariel! There you are! (Changes tone) I’m not sure we ought to be up here…
(Ariel calls him a guppy) A guppy?!? I’m as brave as you are! I’m not afraid of
anything—(Ariel asks him about sharks) Sharks?!? Where?!?

Sebastian
(Talking to Ariel after he almost got eaten by the chef)
Out of the frying pan, into the fire! The things I do for you, young lady! Now, I
should march you right back home to your father—(Ariel’s eyes grow wide, and
she shakes her head “no”)—so you can be miserable the rest of your life… (sighs
heavily, shakes head, gives in) It’s true. I got no backbone… All right child. I’m in.
But we got to get that boy to kiss you before it’s too late! You gotta bat your
eyes, like this… Then you gotta pucker your lips, like this… (Sebastian
demonstrates, Ariel copies) Oh, that’s good!
Ariel **Need to show his change from first lines to the next ones**
(Inspecting a telescope that she found after the storm/saving Prince Eric)
And now let me see… what did Scuttle call this one? It is a ditty-whumper? A
thumb-doodle? Whatever it is… Prince Eric held it in his own strong, beautiful
human hands. If only I could make my father understand. I just don’t see how a
world that makes such wonderful things could be so bad.
(King Triton is scolding her for going up to the surface and having human stuff)
Daddy, they’re not barbarians! I’m old enough to look after myself and if you
would just listen to me for once—(he cuts her off) You’re so unfair!
Prince Eric
(Talking to Grimsby about finding a girl)
Did you ever try to take a princess sailing? It’s a joke! Their dresses get caught in
the rigging. And most of ‘em can’t even swim. Where am I gonna find her
Grimsby? A girl who’s as carefree and alive as the sea itself. Where? It’s too
much to hope for, isn’t it? Somewhere, out there… a girl who’s a match for a guy
like me?

Ursula **Need to show his change from first lines to the next ones**
(Talking to Ariel about her problem with her father and that King Triton doesn’t
understand her)
We’re so very alike, you and I—gals with ambition! Now tell me absolutely
everything! (Ariel tells her she’s in love with a human) A prince, I hear. Quite a
catch! Well, the answer is simple: You’ve got to become human yourself! (Ariel
asks if she can do that) My dear, sweet child—it’s what I live for: to help
unfortunate merfolk like yourself. Poor souls with no one else to turn to.
(Ariel realizes that Ursula killed her mother and King Triton was right about
Ursula all along)
Yes, father was right! And you’ll soon see just how insignificant the merfolk
become when Ursula’s in charge! With trident in hand, I shall unleash the power
of Poseidon to destroy you all!

Music Selections: Please choose one song to sing. You must memorize and
prepare the song choice. “Under the Sea” is a 5th grade choice ONLY—6th-8th
graders CANNOT choose this song. 5th Graders, you do not have to choose
“Under the Sea” but you are able to choose this song if you wish. Music Tracks
are available on the drama website.
