Detour, the city’s resident creative festival, will be held at the arts hub this year, bringing over 70 fun design-related events soho-side. what’s more, they’ve partnered up with sweden (yes, the country) to bring a slew of swedish pop-up shops. highlight exhibitions include a photography show by local snapper Jimmy Ming shum themed around “hong Kong girls” for Yahoo hK’s 15th anniversary campaign, and a workshop section dedicated to elaine ng Yan-ling’s investigation in eco-friendly dyes, “Biochromes.”

Wrest Festsushi and sake make a great pairing—add in sumo wrestling and you’ve got one bizarre sports-slash-foodie Japanese fest. Returning for a second year, Sumo Sushi Sake HK features professional sumo wrestlers wakaryusei Keisuke and shoketsu Yoshiaki, both ranked top 10 in the Makushita division in Japan. Also odd ones to watch: the sushi and hot-dog eating contests! The outdoor festival on the west Kowloon waterfront includes food stalls from the likes of Tiger Curry, Mr. Bing, sugo sushi and wagyu Master, plus live music.

“LiFe LiVing LiFe” eXhiBiTion
Last month, photographer Michael sloyer hosted an exhibition featuring work from his new book “Life Living Life.” Taking place at new venue Lightstage Arts and events space, the charity event saw a harp performance by Juliana Beckel, plus wine and canapés from wine shop Asia and Corner Kitchen Café. The event was able to raise $1.6 million for hagar international, which helps women in developing countries who have been victims of human rights abuse.

Tress to Impress After the Mandarin Salon won The List’s Readers’ Choice Award for Best salon in hong Kong, we simply had to give it a go. This salon is the real deal: the stylists are extremely professional, the facilities beautifully maintained, and did we mention the coffee? well, it too is awesome. KS: i never thought i’d enjoy a pedicure that didn’t finish with a fresh splash of paint, but i’ve gotta say that Bastien Gonzalez’s pedicure at the Landmark oriental is something else. Yeah, it’s pricey, and a bit more technical than your average pedi, but the resulting sheen might just inspire you to show off your feet in flip-flops all winter. And Albin, the technician, is pretty dreamy.

SF: i’m a big fan of the Langham Place’s two-story Chuan Spa, which does Asian-inspired treatments in plush, Chinese-style rooms, with amazing views of Kowloon to boot. For the festive season, they’re doing a two-hour festive package, comprising a mulled wine Jacuzzi soak, a ginger and sugar scrub, and a nice and cozy hot stone massage. i can’t wait to get in the festive spirit by checking it out—although with a young baby, i’m mostly looking forward to catching up on some z’s while dad babysits!

SF: if your skin needs some serious TLC, you hAVe to book in to see Justine at The Skin Gym. i had quite possibly the most effective facial i’ve ever had with her, and a fantastic education session to boot. with her prescription facial, she tailored a regimen perfectly suited to my needs, refined my skin surface with a diamond-tipped microdermabrasion device, cleared out my pores big-time, and gently got rid of dead skin build-up with a glyclolic peel. i left the treatment room glowing—not blotchy or shiny—and weeks later my skin is still enjoying the effects.

The steel cleavers have “hong Kong” engraved in Chinese, and cost about $250 per knife. why so? it’s best to illustrate this with a story. it seems like every single place in the world that’s ever been “discovered” has a colonization myth that goes like so:
it has been days, perhaps months, at sea. But at last, the explorer has made landfall on an undiscovered territory. success! with the surf still pooling at his ankles, he falls to the sand, praising his god and his country. A shadow falls over him. he raises his eyes: it is a native of this fair land.
The explorer greets the native, smiling as he shouts in his mother tongue: “hoy! You! You there, native! what do you call this place?”

And so the land of who- the-hell-are-you-and-why-are- you-standing-on-my-fishing-nets is named forevermore, a testament to the world before globalization and the fact that good explorers are not necessarily skilled linguists.
what’s the point of this story, you ask? well, this has happened in hong Kong, too. For the village of Aberdeen was once known as “hong Kong”or “fragrant harbor,” said to be named for the sandalwood incense stored in the area. when westerners arrived in hong Kong they asked the inhabitants of the village what the place was called: “hong Kong,” answered the villagers. The name stuck, and by the time everyone worked out that they were just talking about the village, it was too late. hong Kong is now hong Kong, and Aberdeen has become 香港仔, heung gong zai—“Little hong Kong.”
so the Chinese name “hong Kong” is only used for our city because some westerner came along and got it all wrong. it’s just another way in which this wonderful place is a symbiosis of everyone who’s ever set foot on these shores: without every single one of them, hong Kong wouldn’t be hong Kong. Although Aberdeen village, at least, might have a better name.

Dear Santa,
I have mostly been a good baby this year. I have learned to swat at stuff with my hands, my nappies are aromatic and voluminous, and I have been practicing screeching very diligently. Please read my Christmas list, check it twice, and bring me the good stuff.
This year, I would like…
• A big bonfire that I can burn my bibs on. I HATE BIBS. I hate the snap buttons, and the way they cling around my neck like a predator made of soft cotton. I would much rather drool all over
my clothes. Why can’t I just drool all over my clothes?
• A set of REAL KEYS. Mummy says I can’t have my own set of keys because they are metal and sharp, but c’mon Santa—just a couple will do. I will not tolerate any of those fake plastic keys designed for babies. They don’t jangle right.
• Some clothes that are not pink. I look really cute in pink, but I am a baby feminist at heart,
so I feel like my wardrobe should perhaps be a little more diverse.
• An elf or Christmas pudding costume. Actually I will hate this, but mummy will like it so I will tolerate my dignity being robbed for one day. Or maybe just for 30 seconds so she can get a photo.
To be 5 feet tall. I like to be part of the big-people world, but I think mummy and daddy’s arms and legs are getting tired from constantly standing up to carry. Can you make me taller?
A toupée. All the hair at the back and sides of my head is coming in nicely, but I’m still a little thin on top. The baby mullet thing isn’t really doing
it for me, so if you could bring me a wig, that would be great. I will also accept a hat with animal ears on it.
• As many packs of nappies your reindeers can carry. I am really powering through them, and mummy says she’s going to have to take on a second job to pay for them all.
