Welcome to Disney’s The Lion King, the fourth production of our 2018/2019 KeyBank Broadway at The Paramount season!

We are so proud to be collaborating with Disney Theatrical Group, Theatre Development Fund, and our sponsors and community partners to offer a sensory-friendly performance of The Lion King on January 5, 2019 at 2 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre.

As STG’s first-ever sensory-friendly performance, this experience will provide a supportive and judgment-free environment for families and friends with children or adults affected by autism and other sensory challenges to enjoy the shared experience of live theatre. Slight adjustments, including altered lighting and reduced sound, will be made to the show and staffed specialists, noise-cancelling headphones, fidget items, and additional support will be available throughout the theatre. Creating and facilitating community alliances is valued very highly at STG. To ensure this value is upheld, STG is constantly working to develop new community programs, as well as expand upon existing programs that have already forged countless alliances throughout our community. One such program, Disney Musicals in Schools, is now in its fifth year in Seattle. The program is an education initiative developed by Disney Theatrical Productions in 2008-2009 to create sustainable theater programs in under-resourced elementary schools. In doing so, the program fosters key skills for students while strengthening school arts programming and an appreciation of the arts within schools, as well as cultivating positive relationships between students, faculty, staff, parents, and the community. STG had been an active partner since 2014, and this year marks the 10th anniversary of the program nationally. In celebration, Seattle Theatre Group has been extended a one-time gift to support our continual funding of this program. Additionally, Disney Theatrical Productions is awarding participating Year 1-3 schools additional financial support for their individual musical theatre arts programs, as well as an offer to match up to $1,000.00 that any participating schools raise through projects on Donor’sChoose.org for their musical theatre program. Participating Year 1 school casts and school team members will also experience Disney’s The Lion King at The Paramount Theatre in December 2018 for free and receive funds for transportation to The Paramount for the show.

Seattle Theatre Group has also been accepted to participate in a pilot expansion, which is a grant to expand Disney Musicals in Schools to Title I elementary schools outside of the immediate surrounding districts previously served. This grant will allow STG to serve 2 additional schools in the 2018-19 program year and 2 additional schools in the 2019-20 program year. For this next program year, we are excited to announce our partnership with Conway Elementary (Conway School District) and View Ridge Elementary (Bremerton School District) as the first 2 schools reached through this expansion initiative. Additional schools joining the 2018-19 program year are Star Lake Elementary (Federal Way School District) and Manchester Elementary (South Kitsap School District). Each school will perform their selected 30-minute Disney KIDS musical at their school and has received a free performance license to the musical; free ShowKit materials including a director’s guide, student scripts, and cross-curricular activities, among other tools; free in-school support from two STG teaching artists; and participation in a Student Share Celebration at The Paramount Theatre on March 18, 2019.

STG in HospitalsSTG is excited to be continuing its partnership with the Melodic Caring Project for the second year of STG in Hospitals. Last year, we teamed up to offer this program in conjunction with Disney’s Aladdin and support from the Broadway League, Disney Theatrical Group and Broadway Across America. This year, this interactive program began weeks leading up to the Paramount’s run of Disney’s The Lion King. During that time, local musicians worked with a group of hospitalized children to teach them several key songs from the show. Music materials and themed merchandise were provided to the children free of charge. While the show is here in Seattle, a live 30-minute interactive backstage tour will be streamed to the selected hospitals. During the tour, children can chat online with the cast members and production personnel, learn about the backstage workings of The Lion King, and get an inside look into the creative process.

After the live stream, selected cast members will pay a visit to Seattle Children’s and Mary Bridge Hospital to sing with the children and provide additional merchandise and one-on-one interaction. The final portion of the program provides 20 tickets for these children and their families to attend a matinee performance of The Lion King and a post-show talk-back. Thank you to all of our patrons and donors for helping us continue to nurture our community alliances while bringing this program, and the music and magic of The Lion King, to kids here in Seattle and beyond!

Student Matinee ProgramIn order to live up to its vision of enriching, inspiring, challenging, and expanding our world through the arts, Seattle Theatre Group is committed to serving as a catalyst for community alliances. We actively work with local schools and organizations to deepen significance of performances, inspire youth and local artists, and provide access initiatives – all through opportunities to engage with the arts. Each season, STG presents and produces a number of daytime matinees for school and community groups at our historic Paramount, Moore, and Neptune Theatres. Sensory-Friendly Performance of Disney’s THE LION KING

With your support, STG, Disney Theatrical Group, TDF, and our community partners will be able to offer our first-ever sensory-friendly performance of Disney’s THE LION KING on January 5, 2019 at 2pm at The Paramount Theatre. Many families forego the opportunity to attend the theatre due to fear of disrupting traditionally quiet audiences or due to financial restraints. This special show will be performed in a supportive and judgment-free environment for children and adults who are affected by autism or facing other sensory issues. STG’s goal is to better serve our community by providing accommodations for a range of sensory needs in an affordable manner.

What is a Sensory-Friendly Performance?

In advance of the performance, STG will provide to attendees a downloadable Social Story with pictures of the theatre and the production in order to help individuals prepare for the show. Additional resources for the performance will be provided, such as a Character Guide with photos and information about cast members and a Guide to Attending the Show with detailed information aimed at reducing anxiety over the unknowns of visiting a new space.

At the theatre, guests will be provided appropriate activity zones, quiet spaces, and helpful tools such as noise-cancelling headphones and fidget items. Slight adjustments will be made to the show including altered lighting and reduced sound. Food and drink will be allowed in seats and audience noise and movement will be embraced. Throughout the lobby, there will be break areas staffed by autism specialists for anyone needing to leave their seat during the show to visit a quiet space or activity zone. All restrooms will be family-friendly.

How Much Will Tickets Cost?

Ticket costs will be significantly reduced to remove barriers so that all interested families are able to attend. Depending on seat location, tickets will be $15, $30, or $50. For those in need, some tickets will be completely underwritten.

Inspired by the success of STG’s recent student matinees and education curriculum for HAMILTON, we are planning to mirror this program for DEAR EVAN HANSEN. Themes from the show that will be highlighted include connection, identity, social media, and living in the digital age. On January 24th, 2019 at 1pm, regional high-school students who attend Title I public schools that qualify for the federal free and reduced lunch program will receive the opportunity to experience a matinee performance of DEAR EVAN HANSEN. Our goal to underwrite this performance will allow close to 3,000 students, who otherwise would not be able, to see this award-winning and relevant production. Included in our fundraising effort will be pre- and post-show curriculum for participating students. We’ve already received an enthusiastic response from schools who are grateful for this opportunity. Tickets will be issued directly through the schools.

What Is STG’s Fundraising Goal and How Can I Help?

THE LION KING: STG’s fundraising goal for the sensory-friendly performance of THE LION KING is $170,000. Together, we can remove barriers to participation and ensure easy access for individuals and families who are affected by autism and other sensory issues. Your contribution will help cover expenses related to the advance communication, support at the theatre, and partially or fully underwritten tickets. We need your help to make the dream of a sensory-friendly performance of THE LION KING a reality.

DEAR EVAN HANSEN: STG’s fundraising goal for the special performance of DEAR EVAN HANSEN and related curriculum is $166,000. We experienced first-hand the positive impact of providing access for underserved students to see HAMILTON inspiring us to renew that commitment by reducing the ticket price for Title I high school students to see DEAR EVAN HANSEN.

In addition to seeing DEAR EVAN HANSEN, students will participate in curricular activities which will further develop collaborative and critical thinking skills while gaining a greater appreciation for the arts. The projects will focus on the responsibility and awareness around social media and growing up in the digital age. The reduced ticket prices, added curriculum, and transportation for the students to attend the performance dramatically increase our expenses. We need your help to make this experience possible for local students from Title I Schools to participate in this thought-provoking program.

Seattle Theatre Group’s Education and Community Programs (ECP) invest in meaningful experiences for our community and future generations of performing artists. Each season, STG offers over 260+ education programs impacting over 56,000 students and community members from diverse ages and backgrounds. These programs deepen significance to performances through opportunities to engage with artists, inspire youth and local artists through training and performance opportunities, and provide exposure to the arts through access initiatives.

Over the years, we’ve seen numerous ECP participants build upon the skills they’ve learned in our sessions to create successful and fulfilling careers. Below is a snapshot of past ECP participants who have done just that!

Multi-Grammy Award winning hip-hop artist Macklemore participated in STG’s first ever More Music @ The Moore program in 2002.

Dancer Aaron Alexander participated in STG’s DANCE This program. He has choreographed and performed hip-hop in Los Angeles and Seattle, and in 2016, was cast in the Chicago production of Hamilton.

Former DANCE This participant Aaron Loux attended Juilliard before dancing with The Metropolitan Opera and

Arc Dance Company. He has danced with Mark Morris Dance Group since 2010.

Pamela Yasutake, from Northwest Tap Connection, is also a DANCE This alum who performed with Savion Glover on the Paramount stage before making her Broadway debut in the 10-time Tony nominated musical Shuffle Along.

Seattle-based hip-hop artist and producer Otieno Terry is a former participant of STG’s More Music @ The Moore program. He was recently featured on Macklemore’s new album Gemini, opened for Macklemore at his Seattle concert last year, and has played Sasquatch! and Bumbershoot.

Acclaimed opera singer J’nai Bridges is a former More Music @ The Moore participant who has performed with the San Francisco Opera, Opera Zürich, Los Angeles Philharmonic, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Opera, and Lyric Opera of Chicago, among others.

One of STG’s core values is to serve as stewards of Seattle’s historic Paramount, Moore, and Neptune Theatres, and part of our commitment to keeping these spaces healthy and vibrant is to welcome a new generation of visitors and patrons to experience their magic firsthand. That’s why STG is proud to offer free Historic Theatres Tours, led by members of our well-versed volunteer staff.

“Over 450,000 patrons pass through the doors of The Paramount each year. These free tours give the public a chance to learn more about this historic Theatre while giving them a glimpse behind the scenes.” - Josh LaBelle, Executive Director of Seattle Theatre Group

Tours of the Paramount Theatre take place on the first Saturday of every month and guests should meet in front of the main entrance, on the corner of 9th and Pine. Tours of the Moore Theatre are the second Saturday of every month and guests should meet in front of the main entrance, on the corner of 2nd and Virginia. Neptune Tours are the third Saturday of every month and guests should meet in front of the main entrance, on the corner of NE 45th St. & Brooklyn Ave. All tours begin at 10 a.m.

Additionally, Seattle Theatre Group is able to schedule tours upon request for student groups ages 7 and up. This is an excellent way for students to experience the technical aspects of the stage, take a behind-the-scenes look at backstage operations, and get an introduction to the history of the building.
