Loving Libraries by Nick Arnold

As storms blow and chills chill what is more joyous than a good book and something warming to drink?

Maybe that’s why something of a warm glow

settles over our local libraries this month. At APPLEDORE LIBRARY Alma reports a successful Appledore Book Festival with the

Library buzzing with new people and a great interest in the Festival authors. The Library offers new books to read this month and a

school visit too. On top of that look out for Facebook groups for Appledore Library and Friends of Appledore Library.

If you’ve got kids or grandkids don’t miss the free Creepy Crafts session from 10.30 am on Thursday 29th October. And whilst noise is

welcome in libraries these days – there’s a two-minute silence at 11 am on Armistice Day - 11th November. Finally if you like wonderful

stories and poems and a glass of happy juice, come to Words and Wine hosted by the Appledore Writers’ Group on Saturday 28th

November at 7.30 pm. Tickets cost £3.00 from the Library and Appledore Newsagents.

Before we move on to NORTHAM LIBRARY - congratulations to the gallant 25 or so of you who overcame the Three Libraries Challenge

and walked to Northam Library for a delicious tea. Lisa reports fantastic events including £220.68 raised by the Macmillan Coffee

Morning. Reading star Fred Cross has won a Book Track Gold Award by reading 100 books and talking of youthful talent, there’s a free Bat

Lantern-making workshop on Wednesday 28th October at 10.30 am and Ghosts and Ghouls Lego to look forward to on the 30th. In

December there’ll be a talk by Tales of the Torridge author Pauline Smith but I’ll tell you more next time.

Over in TORRINGTON LIBRARY the staff must be worn out after welcoming no less than 14 classes from Bluecoats Primary. The magic

of libraries will be celebrated with a free spells workshop with author C.J Busby on Friday 30th October (please book your place at the

Library). And talking of the sheer happiness that libraries bring to our younger readers just look at Inka who won a book token and Megan

who won Exmoor Zoo tickets for her family in

the Reading Challenge. Of course joy is just the start. With more young readers – libraries are winners too and so is Britain.

In BIDEFORD LIBRARY the usual groups

meet at the usual times but I want to highlight two of them. On Wednesdays at 2.30 pm there’s a group called Book Breaks for Carers –

the wonderful and worthwhile idea is to meet fellow carers and listen to stories and poetry. The second group is the Creative Writing Group

hosted by Nikki Brownson on Saturday 14th November at 2 pm. As the Appledore event shows- libraries are more than reading – they’re

about creating the next generation of books.

And there’s more – the Devon Libraries web

page now has free excusive access to FREE MAGAZINES through Zinio. And don’t worry if you don’t do computers – at libraries such as

Appledore there’s a tablet computer for reading the mags. And there’s a friendly librarian to help you and more ways to warm your heart in

the magical glow of books and good cheer. Loving Libraries – what’s not to love?

HONOUR YOUR ANCESTORS Former pupils of Meddon Village School Remembered

Could your ancestor have been a pupil at the school? The school in Meddon became the Village Hall in 1946, after providing education for nearly 70 years. The Meddon Family History Circle (which

meets at the hall, 1st Wednesday of every month) has researched details of the 524 children (including evacuees) who attended Meddon School all those years ago. We are hoping to commemorate every child and staff-member by inscribing their names on the underside of new slates

as we re-roof our hall in October and November 2015. If you would like to donate £2 to ‘sponsor’ a tile naming your ancestor, check the register of scholars for family members, or obtain further details of the Family History Circle, please contact 07414 552 817, email [email protected]

Host Families Needed

SOL is a unique and innovative language school and educational charity that provides exciting English language courses for students from Eastern and Central Europe and beyond.

We are looking for caring host families in the Bideford and Barnstaple areas who would be willing to offer accommodation and some of their time to enable our students to experience family life in North Devon. We need both regular and occasional hosts.

Our students have a full daily programme from Monday to Saturday with Sunday being a day to enjoy with their host families. The courses are from 7 to 10 days in length starting in February through to December.

If you feel you may be interested in being a host family and earning some extra money, please contact us.
